Abstract

This paper pursues the insight that language models naturally enable an intelligent variation operator similar in spirit to evolutionary crossover. In particular, language models of sufficient scale demonstrate in-context learning, i.e. they can learn from associations between a small number of input patterns to generate outputs incorporating such associations (also called few-shot prompting). This ability can be leveraged to form a simple but powerful variation operator, i.e. to prompt a language model with a few text-based genotypes (such as code, plain-text sentences, or equations), and to parse its corresponding output as those genotypes' offspring. The promise of such language model crossover (which is simple to implement and can leverage many different open-source language models) is that it enables a simple mechanism to evolve semantically-rich text representations (with few domain-specific tweaks), and naturally benefits from current progress in language models. Experiments in this paper highlight the versatility of language-model crossover, through evolving binary bit-strings, sentences, equations, text-to-image prompts, and Python code. The conclusion is that language model crossover is a promising method for evolving genomes representable as text.

Abstract

This article examines the dimensions and rationale for Turkey’s focus on Asia during the Erdoğan era. It argues that Turkey’s shift toward Asia is influenced by two key motivations: the emergence of Asia in the transitional international order and the success of Asian political and economic governance models as a development paradigm. The research findings indicate that Asia’s rise as a power axis in the global order attracts Turkey, a middle power, for its own security and economic interests. Additionally, the success of Asian models of economic and political governance in the development path encourages the ruling AKP in Turkey to strengthen its domestic power by aligning with these models, thus moving toward structural and value-based ties with Asia. Furthermore, by representing Asia as an alternative for modernization and good governance in the contemporary world, Turkey seeks to engage in the reproduction of its Asian identity. Abstract

Since the Islamic revolution, Iran has experienced deep identity changes in its foreign policy. The Islamic Republic redefined the way to interact with the world based on the Shi’ite ideas and the historical memory of Iranians. With the growing tensions between Iran and the West, conflicts can be seen between Iran’s defined identity and its foreign policy actions, to the extent that in cases such as Iran’s policy towards Russia and the path of Iran–China relations, the principles of Iran’s identity have been ignored. This article considers why there is a conflict between the positions and actions of Iran and the identity that this country represents, focusing on the period after the withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Using the descriptive-explanatory method, this article tests the hypothesis that although the intensification of sanctions has strengthened the narrative of anti-Westernism in Iran, the transformation of anti-Westernism into a dominant identity discourse has caused other layers of identity to be marginalised and even ignored in some cases. Abstract

Adjustable-speed drives (ASDs) generate current harmonics due to their nonlinear characteristic and switching function. These current harmonics could pass through a network and deteriorate the power quality, create resonances, and increase network power loss. Higher order 2-9 kHz harmonics, among them, have become a new challenge for drive manufacturers, as these harmonics will be covered in the forthcoming IEC standards (standardization committee SC77A). To address the existing gaps, this article explores 2-9 kHz current harmonics for a common ASD type that has a diode-bridge rectifier (DR) and a dc-link filter. Through the analytical study and experimental results presented in this article, it is shown that the main source of 2-9 kHz current harmonics at the grid side of this type of ASD is its front-end DR. Moreover, it is found out that the amplitude of these current harmonics can be significantly affected by the operation power of the other ASDs in the network. Furthermore, it is analyzed that these interactions increase the 2-9 kHz current harmonics at an ASD when the other ASDs operate at different load values.

26. A Precise Model of DC-Link Current in Adjustable Speed Drives for the Harmonic Analysis of Electrical Networks

Abstract

Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs) deteriorate the power quality in distribution networks by increasing the harmonic distortions. These harmonics can also cause serious electromagnetic interference-related issues in the network, as they have a high value above 2 kHz. To prevent these issues, the harmonics above 2 kHz have been considered in recent decades by different standardization committees. Therefore, manufacturers seek precise models to analyze ASD harmonics for complying with the forthcoming standards, and network operators need analytical models to estimate these harmonics in networks that include multiple ASDs. In this paper, a new mathematical model is developed for estimating the inverter-side current harmonics that flow through the DC-link in an ASD. The proposed model is found by considering a precise model of voltage ripples across DC-link for calculating the current harmonics at the load side of the ASD. Then, a mathematical approach is used to find the current harmonics that pass through DC-link according to the load side currents. This model demonstrates a higher accuracy to find an ASD's harmonics over the existing methods due to modeling the effects of voltage ripple across DC-link and the load-side harmonics. The proposed model and the conclusions from the analysis are validated by experimental and simulation results.

27. Detailed Estimation of Grid-Side Current and Its Oscillations Caused by Adjustable Speed Drive Systems

Abstract

The current oscillations (ringings) associated with the voltage notches at the point of common coupling, caused by the function of diode rectifiers in adjustable speed drives (ASDs), can impair the power quality and make electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. Considering these transients, this article proposes an analytical approach to estimate the time-domain behavior of ASD systems with the focus on the operation of their DR. With the aim of simplifying the derivation of equations that govern the time-domain response of the ASD system, a new set of approximations are introduced. These approximations are carried out to find the contributing factors (parameters) in the formation of the undesirable current ringings occurring in the grid-side of the ASD system. As power converters with a similar topology are used for different applications, such as in renewable energies, these new approximations and the derived equations can be applied in other fields (and other similar systems). The investigations suggest more design limitations for the passive components of the ASD system, such as the EMI filters. To prove the validity of the proposed approach, the obtained numerical results are verified by the simulation and experimental results.

Abstract

Power converters generate current harmonics due to their nonlinear characteristic and switching function. Among these harmonics, 2-9kHz current harmonics have not been covered in the existing standards, so regulations are being developed by IEC standardisation committee SC77A, WG1. This paper explores the current harmonics generated by converters in the frequency range of 2-9kHz in a multi-converter distribution network. So, the impacts of different converter components such as a rectifier and an inverter switching function are analysed on 2-9kHz current harmonics using experimental and simulation data. Next, analytical equations for estimating 2-9kHz current harmonics in the multi-converter condition are developed. Moreover, the harmonic cancellation in the range of 2-9kHz is studied at the system level considering different operating power and load power factors for the converters. The outcome of these investigations can be utilised to estimate the current harmonic emissions in the frequency range of2-9 kHz in a multi-converter network. This paper also provides valuable information for compatibility development in 2-9 kHz frequency range concerning IEC SC 77A standardisation committee at a system level.

Abstract

Predicting current harmonics in distribution networks is essential to find harmonic losses and power quality indices. In order to predict the current harmonics, the effect of grid impedance and voltage distortions on grid-connected power converters need to be considered. The effects of these parameters on current harmonics can be nonlinear, which complicates the system analysis. Consequently, this paper investigates the impacts of background voltage harmonics, grid impedance, and multi-parallel grid-connected converters on current harmonics at a point of common coupling. Moreover, a novel method called combined least squares and kriging (CLSK) is proposed to predict the current harmonics after evaluating the level of system nonlinearity. In the proposed CLSK method, the prediction model is developed by measured voltage and current harmonics at the point of common coupling to identify and predict the current harmonics. This analysis shows that using the proposed CLSK method, the accuracy of the current harmonic prediction is increased compared to the existing methods. The accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed CLSK method are verified by lab experimental results and field measurement data.

Abstract

The unbalanced condition of typical loads in industrial networks could affect the current harmonics across the dc-link in Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs). These current harmonics could pass through the dc-link and create new current harmonics at the grid side. Thus, the effect of unbalanced-load condition on the current harmonics across the dc-link needs to be considered in the design process. Moreover, new compatibility levels and emission limits will be developed for the 2-9 kHz current harmonics, so drives need to meet these new requirements in future. These current harmonics could also be significantly affected by the load power factor at the unbalanced-load condition. Due to these reasons, analysing the effect of unbalanced-load and load power factor on the current harmonics between 0 to 9 kHz across the dc-link is vital. Thus, this paper presents an analytical approach for estimating the current harmonics of the inverter at the dc side considering unbalanced-load currents. The proposed mathematical equations are then validated with experimental results. These analyses reveal that the negative-sequence current generates new harmonics across the dc-link. Additionally, the relationship between unbalanced currents at the load side and dc-link are found as a function of positive-and negative-sequence currents.

Abstract

J. M. Coetzee's Age of Iron depicts the apocalyptic years of racial rage and violence in South Africa. In this paper, an attempt is made to delineate Elizabeth Curren's difficult 'journey' back to her ethical self by using Homi Bhabha's theory of the nation and Emanuel Levinas's ethical philosophy. First, it is discussed how the apartheid regime has pedagogically inculcated the white population of South Africa with the ideas of superiority and indifference over the black population. Then, Curren's arduous journey back to her ethical self is discussed showing how by acting in a performative manner her ethical self learns not to pass judgements on the other becoming once again capable of sympathizing and empathizing with as well as loving the other. Coetzee speaks about and refers to the apartheid obliquely and indirectly since having done otherwise would have strengthened the apartheid regime by 'reflecting' and 'supplementing' history. Alluding to several other literary works enables Coetzee not only to depict the hellish conditions of South Africa indirectly but also to offer the possibility of some kind of redemption for his protagonists. Abstract

Background: The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in the biological systems play an important role in pathological conditions and specific normal cellular processes, such as signaling pathways and drug sensitivity. Methods: Intracellular ROS was determined using (2'-7'dichlorofluorescin diacetate) DCFH-DA fluorimetric probe, malondialdehyde as lipid peroxidation index detected by the Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances method. Cells' protein carbonyl contents were assessed with 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivatization spectrophotometrically at 360-385 nm. Results: The oxidative stress induces ROS (p=0.05), MDA (Malondialdehyde) (p=0.05), and protein carbonylation (p=0.01) was significantly higher in HER2- positive BT-474, SK-BR-3, and MDA-MB-453 compared to the HER2-negative MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cell lines. Conclusion: We hypothesized that increased oxidative stress in HER2-positive cell lines is due to the oncogenic function of the HER2 and PI3K/Akt signaling activation, resulting in glycolysis induction. It is assumed that HER2-positive cell lines with high ROS levels are more vulnerable to further damage by increased ROS levels induced by pro-oxidant anticancer agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
