Abstract

Generation of quasi-monoenergetic ion pulse by laser-driven acceleration is one of the hot topics in laser plasma physics. In this study, we present a new method for the \textit{In-situ} deposition of an ultra-thin D$_2$O layer on the surface of an aluminum foil target utilizing a spherical D$_2$O capsule. Employing a 10$^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ laser, we achieve the acceleration of 10.8 MeV deuterons with an energy spread of $\Delta$E/E = 4.6% in the most favorable shot. The energy spread depends on the exposure time of the D$_2$O capsule in the vacuum chamber. This method has the potential to extend its applicability to other ion species.

Abstract

Recent progress of laser science provides laser-driven neutron source (LDNS), which has remarkable features such as the short pulse width. One of the key techniques to be developed for more efficient use of the LDNS is neutron collimation tubes to increase the number of neutrons arriving at a detector in the time-of-flight method. However, when a tube with a thick wall is used as a collimator the neutron collection efficiency at the detector increases but the time resolution becomes wider because of multiple scattering inside of the tube. In the present study, we have developed a collimation tube made of Ni-0, which is optimized for the increased neutron collection efficiency and a reasonable time resolution. Abstract

The temperature measurement of material inside of an object is one of the key technologies for control of dynamical processes. For this purpose, various techniques such as laser-based thermography and phase-contrast imaging thermography have been studied. However, it is, in principle, impossible to measure the temperature of an element inside of an object using these techniques. One of the possible solutions is measurements of Doppler brooding effect in neutron resonance absorption (NRA). Here we present a method to measure the temperature of an element or an isotope inside of an object using NRA with a single neutron pulse of approximately 100 ns width provided from a high-power laser. We demonstrate temperature measurements of a tantalum (Ta) metallic foil heated from the room temperature up to 617 K. Although the neutron energy resolution is fluctuated from shot to shot, we obtain exactly the temperature using a reference of a silver (Ag) foil kept to the room temperature. A free gas model well reproduces the results. This method enables element(isotope)-sensitive thermometry to detect the instantaneous temperature rise in dynamical processes.

5. Identification of electrostatic two-stream instabilities associated with a laser-driven collisionless shock in a multicomponent plasma

Abstract

Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a non-oscillating component of the electrostatic field in the upstream region of the shock, and generation of up- and down-shifted velocity components within the expanding-ion components. A linear analysis of the instabilities for a C2H3Cl plasma using the one-dimensional electrostatic plasma dispersion function, which includes electron and ion temperature effects, shows that the most unstable mode is the electrostatic ion-beam two-stream instability (IBTI), which is weakly dependent on the existence of electrons. The IBTI is excited by velocity differences between the expanding protons and carbon-ion populations. There is an electrostatic electron-ion two-stream instability with a much smaller growth rate associated with a population of protons reflecting at the shock. The excitation of the fast-growing IBTI associated with laser-driven collisionless shock increases the brightness of a quasi-monoenergetic ion beam.

Abstract

Intense laser-plasma interactions are an essential tool for the laboratory study of ion acceleration at a collisionless shock. With two-dimensional particle-in-cell calculations of a multicomponent plasma we observe two electrostatic collisionless shocks at two distinct longitudinal positions when driven with a linearly-polarized laser at normalized laser vector potential a0 that exceeds 10. Moreover, these shocks, associated with protons and carbon ions, show a power-law dependence on a0 and accelerate ions to different velocities in an expanding upstream with higher flux than in a single-component hydrogen or carbon plasma. This results from an electrostatic ion two-stream instability caused by differences in the charge-to-mass ratio of different ions. Particle acceleration in collisionless shocks in multicomponent plasma are ubiquitous in space and astrophysics, and these calculations identify the possibility for studying these complex processes in the laboratory.

Abstract

Fast isochoric laser heating is a scheme to heat a matter with relativistic-intensity ($>$ 10$^{18}$ W/cm$^2$) laser pulse or X-ray free electron laser pulse. The fast isochoric laser heating has been studied for creating efficiently ultra-high-energy-density (UHED) state. We demonstrate an fast isochoric heating of an imploded dense plasma using a multi-picosecond kJ-class petawatt laser with an assistance of externally applied kilo-tesla magnetic fields for guiding fast electrons to the dense plasma.The UHED state with 2.2 Peta-Pascal is achieved experimentally with 4.6 kJ of total laser energy that is one order of magnitude lower than the energy used in the conventional implosion scheme. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation reveals that diffusive heating from a laser-plasma interaction zone to the dense plasma plays an essential role to the efficient creation of the UHED state., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The dependence of the mean kinetic energy of laser-accelerated electrons on the laser intensity, so-called ponderomotive scaling, was derived theoretically with consideration of the motion of a single electron in oscillating laser fields. This scaling explains well the experimental results obtained with high-intensity pulses and durations shorter than a picosecond; however, this scaling is no longer applicable to the multi-picosecond (multi-ps) facility experiments. Here, we experimentally clarified the generation of the super-ponderomotive-relativistic electrons (SP-REs) through multi-ps relativistic laser-plasma interactions using prepulse-free LFEX laser pulses that were realized using a plasma mirror (PM). The SP-REs are produced with direct laser acceleration assisted by the self-generated quasi-static electric field and with loop-injected direct acceleration by the self- generated quasi-static magnetic field, which grow in a blowout plasma heated by a multi-ps laser pulse. Finally, we theoretically derive the threshold pulse duration to boost the acceleration of REs, which provides an important insight into the determination of laser pulse duration at kilojoule- petawatt laser facilities.

Abstract

The quest for the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition is a grand challenge, as exemplified by extraordinary large laser facilities. Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in ICF ignition sparks. This avoids the ignition quench caused by the hot spark mixing with the surrounding cold fuel, which is the crucial problem of the currently pursued ignition scheme. High-intensity lasers efficiently produce relativistic electron beams (REB). A part of the REB kinetic energy is deposited in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core because of its large divergence. Here we have demonstrated enhanced laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a kilo-tesla-level magnetic field that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation point to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. 7.7 $\pm$ 1.3 % of the maximum coupling was achieved even with a relatively small radial area density core ($\rho R$ $\sim$ 0.1 g/cm$^2$). The guided REB transport was clearly visualized in a pre-compressed core by using Cu-$K_\alpha$ imaging technique. A simplified model coupled with the comprehensive diagnostics yields 6.2\% of the coupling that agrees fairly with the measured coupling. This model also reveals that an ignition-scale areal density core ($\rho R$ $\sim$ 0.4 g/cm$^2$) leads to much higher laser-to-core coupling ($>$ 15%), this is much higher than that achieved by the current scheme.

Abstract

Laser ion acceleration has been intensively inves- tigated after the development of chirped pulse am- plification (CPA) technique. The accelerated ions are applicable for cancer therapy, radioisotope pro- duction, and fast ignition for inertial confinement fusion. To achieve higher ion energies, target thick- ness should be reduced. However, thinner targets can be easily broken by the pedestal or prepulse be- fore the main pulse arrival. We have developed a large-area suspend graphene (LSG) target, which is a single to multiple layered freestanding graphene sheet[3]. Graphene is the thinnest and the strongest material, hence LSG has the potential to be the best targets of laser ion acceleration. We have conducted several experiments with LFEX laser in Osaka University and J-KAREN-P laser in Kansai Photon Science Institute, National Institutes of Quantum Science and Technology. The LFEX laser irradiates on LSG targets with target normal angle. The maximum intensity is ∼ 4 × 10^18 W/cm^2. The J-KAREN-P laser is focused on LSG targets with 45 degree of incident angle at the intensity of ∼ 5 × 10^21 W/cm^2. We have tested the irradiation of non-relativistic laser inten- sity, < 10^18 W/cm^2, by putting the targets at defocusing positions of J-KAREN-P. Thomson parabola spectrometer and CR-39 stack are used to diagnose the accelerated ions. In the all experiments, no plasma mirrors are used. We have observed energetic ions with relativistic laser intensities, a0 ∼ 48 of J-KAREN-P best focus shots and a0 ∼ 1.8 of LFEX. Furthermore, MeV energy ions are also observed with non-relativistic laser intensity, a0 < 1, in defocused experiments of J-KAREN-P. 高エネルギー/高強度レーザーとプラズマの相互作用の理解はHigh Energy Density Physicsにおける重要な課題である。特にレーザーを固体へ照射する場合、固体表面においては、プラズマ加熱、プラズマ振動、界面不安定性、粒子加速、電磁場生成、といった多彩な物理が発現する。これらの詳細な実験的研究は、計測手法の時間/空間的な分解能によって制限されていた。X-ray Free-Electron Laser(XFEL)の登場により、高輝度な短パルスのX線源が利用できるようになったことで、これらの問題に突破口が開かれ、単発現象であるレーザープラズマ実験においても、高精度な計測が可能になった。 我々は、固体界面におけるプラズマ超高速ダイナミクスを調べるために、日本が誇るXFELのSACLAを用いたポンプ・プローブ実験を実施した。ポンプ光としては500TW高強度短パルスレーザー、ターゲットとしてはメゾスケールロッド集合体（直径500nm、間隔1000nm、長さ13μm、シリコン基板上で規則的配列30×15）、計測手法はメゾスケールに対応するためX線小角散乱を用いた。本来、小角散乱に おいて高強度な原点信号に対してその外側に現れる微弱な散乱光を計測するために ビームストップが使用される。今回はプラズマ化することでロッド群が作る回折パターンの時間発展をより長く（原点周りの低次の信号）追うために、散乱信号が低次から高次までX線CCDカメラのダイナミックレンジに収まるように調整した。具体的には、低次が厚くなるようにアルミ板を積層したステップ式アテニュエーターをビームストップの代用とし、原点を含めた全ての散乱パターンを計測した。, 第62回高圧討論会

宇宙線の起源として有力視されているのが、宇宙で生じる無衝突衝撃波である。特に、宇宙ジェットなどの超高速プラズマ中では、自己生成磁場を起因とする無衝突ワイベル衝撃波が生成されると考えられている。我々は高出力・高強度レーザーを用いて、高温、高エネルギー密度、超高速プラズマを生成することで、実験室に無衝突衝撃波を擬似的に再現し、その素過程を研究している（レーザー宇宙物理学）。無衝突ワイベル衝撃波の生成過程では、特有な電流フィラメントが生成される事が予想され、アメリカの大型ナノ秒レーザーOMEGAやNIFを用いた実験では、このフィラメント構造のプロトンバックライトによる計測や電子加速[2]が報告された。しかし、上述の実験ではショット数や時間・空間分解能の制限からワイベルフィラメントの詳細な時間・空間発展は得られていない。そこで我々は、播磨にあるX線自由電子レーザーSACLAと併設の高強度レーザー（最大出力500 TW）を用いたワイベルフィラメント計測実験を提案する。本提案ではサブピコ秒、数十nmでフィラメント構造を可視化する必要があり、SACLAによるX線小角散乱を計測する。その予備実験として、今回、ワイベルフィラメントを模擬したシリコンロッド集合体ターゲット（ロッド直径500 nmの円柱が1000 nm間隔に多数配置されたターゲット）に高強度レーザーを照射し、その時間発展をX線小角散乱によって計測した。, 日本物理学会 2020年秋季大会

44. STUDY OF FAST ELECTRON TRANSPORT AND ENERGETIC PROTON GENERATION AT HIGH LASER INTENSITY AND APPLICATION TO FAST IGNITION

Abstract

Fast Ignition is a very promising, alternative way to achieve energy gain in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) research. It is based on the decoupling of the compression and heating stages of an equi-molar Deuterium-Tritium (DT) plasma, allowing to loose the very tight constraints of the classic central hot spot (CHS) ignition concept, and attaining higher energy gain. The compression of the DT capsule is performed by symmetrically focusing an array of energetic, long (ns) laser pulses on the capsule, inducing its implosion by ablation pressure driven convergent shocks. The heating of the compressed DT plasma is produced by energetic particle beams (electrons or protons), generated by an energetic, ultra-intense (I approx 10^20 W/cm2) short (approx 20 ps) laser pulse, focused at the instant of DT peak compression. The study of generation and transport of laser produced fast electrons and protons is therefore fundamental for the achievement of Fast Ignition ICF. In this work I present the experimental as well as modeling study of fast electron transport and proton beam generation, with application to Fast Ignition. In particular in this work I studied the fast electron transport in rapidly changing plasma density and temperature gradients, conditions expected in a full scale Fast Ignition experiment. In the second part of this work I demonstrated a method to improve the laser-to-proton energy conversion efficiency in a way very suitable for Fast Ignition as well as for medical application.

Abstract

We studied the induced plasma heating in three different kind of targets: mass limited, foam targets and large mass targets. The experiment was performed at Alise laser facility of CEA/CESTA. The laser system emitted a ∼1‐ps pulse with ∼10 J energy at a wavelength of ∼1 μm. Mass limited targets had three layers with thickness 10 μm C8H8, 1 μm C8H7Cl, 10 μm C8H8 with size 100 μm×100 μm. Detailed spectroscopic analysis of X‐rays emitted from the Cl tracer showed that it was possible to heat up the plasma mass limited targets to a temperature ∼250 eV with density ∼1021 cm−3. The plasma heating is only produced by fast electron transport in the target, being the 10 μm C8H8 overcoating thick enough to prevent any possible direct irradiation of the tracer layer even taking into account mass‐ablation due to the pre‐pulse. These results demonstrate that with mass limited targets is possible to generate a plasma heated up to several hundreds eV. It is also very important for research concerning high energy density...

Abstract

In fast ignition research, the transport dynamics of fast electrons is one of critical issues. Fast electrons are generated through collective processes with an intense laser pulse, and become highly anisotropic. Isotropic cold bulk electrons form a return current to compensate fast electron current, and are heated via an ohmic process. To gain insight into the anisotropy of the velocity distribution of fast electrons, polarized x-ray spectroscopy has been proposed. At a laser intensity of about 10^17^ W/cm^2^, the polarization spectroscopy of Cl Heα radiation was carried out, and has been demonstrated a useful diagnostic tool [1,2]. A new time-dependent atomic population kinetics code has been developed for the study of polarized Cl Heα radiation. The calculation code predicts that the polarization arises only in low density region, and no polarization is found in such dense region as solid [3,4]. Additional x-ray polarization measurement was done at 10^17-18^ W/cm^2^ (~10 J in ~1 ps) from Alisé facility at CEA/CESTA. Chlorinated triple-layer targets were used. Polarization was measured as a function of the overcoat thickness of the target. The polarization is negative at the shallow region from the target surface, and becomes near zero at the higher laser intensity. At the lower laser intensity, the polarization varies from negative to positive, and finally zero along with the overcoat thickness.
