Abstract

Introduction: Due to the very high prevalence of mental pathology in early life (up to 20%), correct diagnosis and immediate treatment in early life is a global health priority. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of validity of the diagnoses of ADHD and ASD made in Primary Health Care Services (PHCS), comparing them with definitive diagnoses issued in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Units (CAMHU). Methodology: 183 patients were included in this study, being referred from Primary Health Care (PHC) to Vecindario's CAMHU, in Gran Canaria, Spain. Evaluation was retrospective and included the following variables: age, sex, perinatal history, adopted minor, family psychiatric history, referring physician's diagnosis of suspicion, definitive diagnosis in the CAMHU, subsequent follow-up and psychopharmacological treatment. To analyze the degree of quality of the referrals, we calculated the percentage of cases that matched the suspected diagnosis of the referring physicians (pediatricians or general practitioners (GP)) and the definitive confirmation diagnosis (issued by the child and adolescent psychiatrist). Results: 75.4% of the sample were males, with a mean age of 8.22 years, 7.7% had a perinatal history, and 17.5% had a family psychiatric history. 65.6% of them were referred with a suspected diagnosis of ADHD, 62.7% were confirmed and 26.27% were rejected. 31.7% were referred to the CAMHU with a suspected diagnosis of ASD. This entity was confirmed in 75.8% and rejected in 10.3%; 5.1% of them were finally diagnosed with ADHD. Only 2.7% were referred for a combined suspicion of ADHD and ASD, but 9.8% of children were finally diagnosed with both diagnoses (ADHD and ASD) concomitantly. Conclusion: The validity of the diagnostic suspicions made in the PHCS was very high: 62.7% for ADHD and 75.8% for ASD; obtaining notably higher percentages than in previous studies. 40. Rethinking motor region role in verb processing: Insights from a neurolinguistic study of noun-verb dissociation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Abstract

Motor regions atrophy has been traditionally assumed to account for selective deficits of verb (V) vs. noun (N) processing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients via action semantic impairment (Embodied Cognition Theory, ECT). Nonetheless, accounts pertaining to both motor region sensitivity to the morpho-phonological structure of Vs and executive functioning (EF) contribution (task difficulty) have not been evenly endorsed. This study aimed at assessing neurocognitive underpinnings of N and V processing in ALS patients. ALS patients were compared to healthy participants (HPs) on tasks evaluating N and V semantic and post-semantic processing. Effects of semantic motor content (actionality) of Ns and Vs and of argument structure complexity of Vs were assessed. EF measures were put into relation to language tasks in patients. Both groups performed worse in V than in N lexical retrieval. Patients had difficulties in retrieving low-actionality Vs, being also sensitive to both transitive Vs and those with 2 and 3 arguments. Patients differed form HPs on both object- and action-semantic measures. EF measures were highly related to patients’ V-retrieval performance. ECT-framed explanations for N > V discrepancies in ALS patients are inconsistent with the present results. Indeed, ALS patients showed semantic deficits that are not limited to the action domain and retrieved more easily high-actionality Vs. N > V discrepancies in ALS patients would thus reflect a magnification of a differential processing demand for Vs and Ns, which is likely intrinsic to the neurocognitive system. Nonetheless, ALS patients being sensitive to argument structure complexity of Vs might imply motor regions involvement in V post-semantic processing, possibly at the lemma level.

Abstract

We consider the Renormalization Group Equations (RGE) for the couplings of the Standard Model and its extensions. Using the hierarchy of the quark masses and of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix our argument is that a consistent approximation for the RGE should be based on the parameter $\lambda= |\hat{V}_{ud}| \approx0.22$. We consider the RGE in the approximation where we neglect all the relative terms of the order $\sim\lambda^{4}$ and higher. Within this approximation we find the exact solution of the evolution equations of the quark Yukawa couplings and of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. Then we derive the evolution of the observables: quark masses, CKM matrix, Jarlskog invariant, Wolfenstein parameters of the CKM matrix and the unitarity triangle. We show that the angles of the unitarity triangle remain constant.
