Abstract

The influence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been widely spread over the last years, establishing new public and privat policies. Education has also been experiencing this change by aligning with the previous goals. In this chapter, we briefly summarize the main activities conducted under the Grant APS22.2003 'Service-based learning of the SDGs related to a responsible production and consumption (A-BASE-DE-PROS)', which uses the SDG 12 as a guide line to raise the awareness of the importance of the 2030 Agenda among undergraduate and secondary-school students. In general, the service-based learning has increased the knowledge of the SDGs among the students. 3. Predictive Control with Learning-Based Terminal Costs Using Approximate Value Iteration

Abstract

Stability under model predictive control (MPC) schemes is frequently ensured by terminal ingredients. Employing a (control) Lyapunov function as the terminal cost constitutes a common choice. Learning-based methods may be used to construct the terminal cost by relating it to, for instance, an infinite-horizon optimal control problem in which the optimal cost is a Lyapunov function. Value iteration, an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) approach, refers to one particular cost approximation technique. In this work, we merge the results of terminally unconstrained predictive control and approximate value iteration to draw benefits from both fields. A prediction horizon is derived in dependence on different factors such as approximation-related errors to render the closed-loop asymptotically stable further allowing a suboptimality estimate in comparison to an infinite horizon optimal cost. The result extends recent studies on predictive control with ADP-based terminal costs, not requiring a local initial stabilizing controller. We compare this controller in simulation with other terminal cost options to show that the proposed approach leads to a shorter minimal horizon in comparison to previous results.

Abstract

Data capturing multiple axes of tree size and shape, such as a tree's stem diameter, height and crown size, underpin a wide range of ecological research-from developing and testing theory on forest structure and dynamics, to estimating forest carbon stocks and their uncertainties, and integrating remote sensing imagery into forest monitoring programmes. However, these data can be surprisingly hard to come by, particularly for certain regions of the world and for specific taxonomic groups, posing a real barrier to progress in these fields. To overcome this challenge, we developed the Tallo database, a collection of 498,838 georeferenced and taxonomically standardized records of individual trees for which stem diameter, height and/or crown radius have been measured. These data were collected at 61,856 globally distributed sites, spanning all major forested and non-forested biomes. The majority of trees in the database are identified to species (88%), and collectively Tallo includes data for 5163 species distributed across 1453 genera and 187 plant families. The database is publicly archived under a CC-BY 4.0 licence and can be access from: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6637599. To demonstrate its value, here we present three case studies that highlight how the Tallo database can be used to address a range of theoretical and applied questions in ecology-from testing the predictions of metabolic scaling theory, to exploring the limits of tree allometric plasticity along environmental gradients and modelling global variation in maximum attainable tree height. In doing so, we provide a key resource for field ecologists, remote sensing researchers and the modelling community working together to better understand the role that trees play in regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Abstract

Forests that regrow naturally on abandoned fields are important for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, but can they also preserve the distinct regional tree floras? Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability. Hence, there is large continental-scale variation in the species composition of early successional forests, which is mainly associated with biogeographic and environmental factors but not with human disturbance indicators. This floristic distinctiveness is partially driven by regionally restricted species belonging to widespread genera. Early secondary forests contribute therefore to restoring and conserving the distinctiveness of bioregions across the Neotropical realm, and forest restoration initiatives should use local species to assure that these distinct floras are maintained.

8. Performance bounds of adaptive MPC with bounded parameter uncertainties

Abstract

Model predictive control is a control approach that minimizes a stage cost over a predicted system trajectory based on a model of the system and is capable of handling state and input constraints. For uncertain models, robust or adaptive methods can be used. Because the system model is used to calculate the control law, the closed-loop behavior of the system and thus its performance, measured by the sum of the stage costs, are related to the model used. If it is adapted online, a performance bound is difficult to obtain and thus the impact of model adaptation is mostly unknown. This work provides a (worst-case) performance bound for a linear adaptive predictive control scheme with a specific model parameter estimation. The proposed bound is expressed in terms of quantities such as the initial system parameter error and the constraint set, among others and can be calculated a priori. The results are discussed in a numerical example.

11. An Assessment Using Rubrics and the Rasch Model of 14/15-Year-Old Students' Difficulties in Arguing about Bottled Water Consumption

Abstract

The development of students' argumentation competence is one of the major aims of science education and everyday problems, such as decisions on the consumption of tap water or bottled water, which may be suitable contexts to encourage it. Citizens consider of interest certain controversies associated with the bottled water consumption as an alternative to tap water, which has a significant effect on several aspects of their daily lives. Deciding whether or not to drink bottled water can be used as an interesting context for science teaching activities. To make appropriate decisions on this issue, students must know how to argue with scientific rigour. This paper presents an assessment of the degree of performance of 14/15-year-old students in scientific argumentation within this context. A specific rubric has been designed for each of the assessment activities used, and the Rasch model has been applied to analyse the degree of difficulty that each of the essential elements of an argument (evidence, justification, and conclusion) has for the students. Thus, evidence is generally shown to be the most difficult element of the argument for students followed by justifications and finally conclusions. The analysis procedure used can help to establish a sequence of argumentation activities within a particular context. Finally, the results obtained can be used in teaching to prepare the appropriate assistance according to the argumentation activity at hand.

Abstract

Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition. Secondary forests take a median time of five decades to recover the species richness of old-growth forest (80% recovery after 20 years) based on rarefaction analysis. Full recovery of species composition takes centuries (only 34% recovery after 20 years). A dual strategy that maintains both old-growth forests and species-rich secondary forests is therefore crucial for biodiversity conservation in human-modified tropical landscapes.

Abstract

Intestinal failure (IF) is a debilitating condition characterized by the insufficient function of the gastrointestinal tract to absorb nutrients and fluids essential for life. This review consolidates recent advancements and challenges in managing IF among adult and pediatric populations, highlighting differences in etiology, management, and outcomes. Over the recent years, significant strides have been made in the nutritional and medical management of IF, significantly reducing mortality rates and improving the quality of life for patients. Key advancements include the development and availability of glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analogs, improved formulations of parenteral nutrition, and the establishment of specialized interdisciplinary centers. Short bowel syndrome (SBS) remains the predominant cause of IF globally. The pediatric segment is increasingly surviving into adulthood, presenting unique long-term management challenges that differ from adult-onset IF. These include the need for tailored nutritional support, management of IF-associated liver disease, and addressing growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes. The therapeutic landscape for IF continues to evolve with the development of new treatment modalities and better understanding of the condition's pathophysiology. However, disparities in treatment outcomes between children and adults suggest the need for age-specific management strategies. The nutrient demands of regrowing tropical forests are partly satisfied by nitrogen-fixing legume trees, but our understanding of the abundance of those species is biased towards wet tropical regions. Here we show how the abundance of Leguminosae is affected by both recovery from disturbance and large-scale rainfall gradients through a synthesis of forest inventory plots from a network of 42 Neotropical forest chronosequences. During the first three decades of natural forest regeneration, legume basal area is twice as high in dry compared with wet secondary forests. The tremendous ecological success of legumes in recently disturbed, water-limited forests is likely to be related to both their reduced leaflet size and ability to fix N2, which together enhance legume drought tolerance and water-use efficiency. Earth system models should incorporate these large-scale successional and climatic patterns of legume dominance to provide more accurate estimates of the maximum potential for natural nitrogen fixation across tropical forests.

Abstract

Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world's tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world's tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.

Abstract

NEXT-100 is currently being constructed at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees and will search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with 100 kg of xenon. Charge amplification is carried out via electroluminescence (EL) which is the process of accelerating electrons in a high electric field region causing secondary scintillation of the medium proportional to the initial charge. The NEXT-100 EL and cathode regions are made from tensioned hexagonal meshes of 1 m diameter. This paper describes the design, characterization, and installation of these parts for NEXT-100. Simulations of the electric field are performed to model the drift and amplification of ionization electrons produced in the detector under various EL region alignments and rotations. Measurements of the electrostatic breakdown voltage in air characterize performance under high voltage conditions and identify breakdown points. The electrostatic deflection of the mesh is quantified and fit to a first-principles mechanical model. Measurements were performed with both a standalone test EL region and with the NEXT-100 EL region before its installation in the detector. Finally, we describe the parts as installed in NEXT-100, following their deployment in Summer 2023.

Abstract

The generation of a great volume of harmful wastes causes many environmental issues, such as AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) generation or metals release, concerning mining and metallurgical activity. Also, several valuable metals are lost in these tailings. However, the reprocessing of these wastes presents several troubles due to the content of pyrite that hinders the process feasibility, nonetheless, the recovery of iron and sulphur from pyrite could increase the incomes of tailings reprocessing. In this work, the bioleaching of mining wastes followed by two precipitation steps and a mineral carbonation step was proposed to recover metals, Fe and S, whilst the main environmental issues are mitigated. Non-ferrous metals were dissolved through bioleaching and brine leaching. Also, bioleaching enabled the dissolution of FeS2 and S0, obtaining an acidic ferric ion liquor with a low metal concentration. After this step, Fe and S were removed through the addition of limestone at pH 3.5 while non-ferrous metals were precipitated later by lime addition at pH 9.5. Cu-Zn-Co hydroxides were used to generate rich liquor by an acidic dissolution enabling the use of conventional purification techniques with a low treatment volume. Mineral carbonation of the Fe/S precipitate was used for the recovery of S as a concentrated sulphate ion solution, while the resulting solid containing Fe(OH)3 and CaCO3 was recirculated to the Fe/S precipitation step as the alkali compound, generating a solid with a higher Fe content after each recirculation step. Some impurities, such as As, P, S, and Cu, were also accumulated during the iron precipitate recirculation. Cu and P were satisfactorily removed through a bioleaching step at low ORP and the modification of basal salts composition, respectively. However, the removal of As and S required further steps, sulphur was easily removed by thermal treatment (pelletising of fine particles). Abstract

The presence of skin bacteria capable of forming biofilm, exhibiting antibiotic resistance, and displaying virulence represents a significant challenge in the field of transfusion medicine. This underscores the necessity of enhancing the microbiological safety of blood and blood components against pathogens with virulent characteristics. The aim of this work was to demonstrate bacterial inactivation in plasma by using a photoinactivation method against virulent bacteria and to evaluate coagulation factors before and after treatment. Logarithmic loads of biofilm-producing, antibiotic-resistant, and virulent bacteria isolated from skin (Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella ozaenae, and Staphylococcus epidermidis) were used in artificial contamination assays of fresh frozen plasma bags and subjected to photoreduction. FVIII and FI activity were evaluated before and after photoinactivation. The photoinactivation of plasma was demonstrated to be an effective method for the elimination of these bacteria. However, the efficiency of this method was found to be dependent on the bacterial load and the type of test microorganism. Conversely, decay of coagulation factors was observed with net residual activities of 61 and 69% for FVIII and FI, respectively. The photoinactivation system could have a bias in its effectiveness that is dependent on the test pathogen. These findings highlight the importance of employing technologies that increase the safety of the recipient of blood and/or blood components, especially against virulent bacteria, and show the relevance of the role of photoinactivation systems as an option in transfusion practice. 42. Online Content for Low-Income and Underserved Americans: The Digital Divide's New Frontier. A Strategic Audit of Activities and Opportunities.

Abstract

This report analyzes the "digital divide" between those who have access to online information and opportunities and those who do not. The research included discussion groups with more than 100 low-income Internet users, interviews with nearly 100 community technology leaders and other experts, analysis of 1,000 Web sites, and a review of the literature and promising activities across the United States. The analysis shows that, although many underserved communities are gaining access to the Internet, many are not benefiting fully because of barriers they face related to content. The most far-reaching barrier is the scarcity of information regarding user's local communities. Other barriers include literacy limitations, language barriers, and the lack of cultural diversity in Internet content. A conservative estimate is that at least 50 million U.S. residents, roughly 20%, face 1 or more content-related barriers that leave them underserved. Focus groups have defined the things that adult and younger users want, and these wants have been used to develop three strategies to promote a positive information society: (1) start with what can be done immediately; (2) put in place a new national strategy that leads and supports communities as they use the new online tools to tackle real community concerns and ensure that no Americans are left out; and (3) carry out the research and development needed for the knowledge base that ensures effective community and national efforts. Six appendixes contain a list of people interviewed for the analysis, content categories used, a list of online resources analyzed, the content criteria used, examples of online content for the underserved, and a list of information resources used.
