To probe the distribution and physical characteristics of interstellar gas at temperatures T ~ 3e5 K in the disk of the Milky Way, we have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to observe absorption lines of OVI toward 148 early-type stars situated at distances 1 kpc. After subtracting off a mild excess of OVI arising from the Local Bubble, combining our new results with earlier surveys of OVI, and eliminating stars that show conspicuous localized X-ray emission, we find an average OVI mid-plane density n_0 = 1.3e-8 cm^-3. The density decreases away from the plane of the Galaxy in a way that is consistent with an exponential scale height of 3.2 kpc at negative latitudes or 4.6 kpc at positive latitudes. Average volume densities of OVI along different sight lines exhibit a dispersion of about 0.26 dex, irrespective of the distances to the target stars. This indicates that OVI does not arise in randomly situated clouds of a fixed size and density, but instead is distributed in regions that have a very broad range of column densities, with the more strongly absorbing clouds having a lower space density. Line widths and centroid velocities are much larger than those expected from differential Galactic rotation, but they are nevertheless correlated with distance and N(OVI), which reinforces our picture of a diverse population of hot plasma regions that are ubiquitous over the entire Galactic disk. The velocity extremes of the OVI profiles show a loose correlation with those of very strong lines of less ionized species, supporting a picture of a turbulent, multiphase medium churned by shock-heated gas from multiple supernova explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. Analyses of spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite, together with spectra from the Copernicus and IMAPS instruments, reveal an unexplained very wide range in the observed deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratios for interstellar gas in the Galactic disk beyond the Local Bubble. We argue that spatial variations in the depletion of deuterium onto dust grains can explain these local variations in the observed gas-phase D/H ratios. We present a variable deuterium depletion model that naturally explains the constant measured values of D/H inside the Local Bubble, the wide range of gas-phase D/H ratios observed in the intermediate regime (log N(H I} = 19.2-20.7), and the low gas-phase D/H ratios observed at larger hydrogen column densities. We consider empirical tests of the deuterium depletion hypothesis: (i) correlations of gas-phase D/H ratios with depletions of the refractory metals iron and silicon, and (ii) correlation with the molecular hydrogen rotational temperature. Both of these tests are consistent with deuterium depletion from the gas phase in cold, not recently shocked, regions of the ISM, and high gas-phase D/H ratios in gas that has been shocked or otherwise heated recently. We argue that the most representative value for the total (gas plus dust) D/H ratio within 1 kpc of the Sun is >=23.1 +/- 2.4 (1 sigma) parts per million (ppm). This ratio constrains Galactic chemical evolution models to have a very small deuterium astration factor, the ratio of primordial to total (D/H) ratio in the local region of the Galactic disk, which we estimate to be f_d <= 1.19 +/-0.16 (1 sigma) or <= 1.12 +/- 0.14 (1 sigma) depending on the adopted light element nuclear reaction rates., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We present the far-UV spectrum of the quasar HS1700+6416 taken with FUSE. This QSO provides the second line of sight with the HeII absorption resolved into a Ly alpha forest structure. Since HS1700+6416 is slightly less redshifted (z=2.72) than HE2347-4342, we only probe the post-reionization phase of HeII, seen in the evolution of the HeII opacity, which is consistent with a simple power law. The HeII/HI ratio eta is estimated using a line profile-fitting procedure and an apparent optical depth approach, respectively. The expected metal line absorption in the far-UV is taken into account as well as molecular absorption of galactic H_2. About 27% of the eta values are affected by metal line absorption. In order to investigate the applicability of the analysis methods, we create simple artificial spectra based on the statistical properties of the HI Ly alpha forest. The analysis of the artificial data demonstrates that the apparent optical depth method as well as the line profile-fitting procedure lead to confident results for restricted data samples only (12.0 < log N(HI) < 13.0). The reasons are saturation in the case of the apparent optical depth and thermal line widths in the case of the profile fits. Furthermore, applying the methods to the unrestricted data set may mimic a correlation between eta and the strength of the HI absorption. For the restricted data samples a scatter of 10 - 15% in eta would be expected even if the underlying value is constant. The observed scatter is significantly larger than expected, indicating that the intergalactic radiation background is indeed fluctuating. In the redshift range 2.58 < z < 2.72, where the data quality is best, we find eta ~ 100, suggesting a contribution of soft sources like galaxies to the UV background., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a study of the deuterium abundance along the extended sight line (2.7kpc) toward HD 90087 with FUSE. Both in terms of distance and column densities, HD 90087 has the longest and densest sight line observed in the Galactic disk for which a deuterium abundance has been measured from UV absorption lines. Because many interstellar clouds are probed along this sight line, possible variations in the properties of individual clouds should be averaged out. This would yield a deuterium abundance which is characteristic of the interstellar medium on scales larger than the Local Bubble. We report D/O=(1.7+/-0.7)e-2 and D/H=(9.8+/-3.8)e-6 (2 sigma). Our new results confirm that the gas-phase deuterium abundance in the distant interstellar medium is significantly lower than the one measured within the Local Bubble. We supplement our study with a revision of the oxygen abundance toward the moderately distant star Feige 110 (~200 pc). Excluding saturated lines from the fits of the FUSE spectra is critical; this led us to derive an OI column density about two times larger than the one previously reported for Feige 110. The corresponding updated D/O ratio on this sight line is D/O=(2.6+/-1.0)e-2 (2 sigma), which is lower than the one measured within the Local Bubble. The dataset available now outside the Local Bubble shows a contrast between the constancy of D/O and the variability of D/H. As oxygen is considered to be a good proxy for hydrogen within the interstellar medium, this discrepancy is puzzling. (abstract abridged), Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We determine the D/H ratio in the interstellar medium toward the DO white dwarf PG0038+199 using spectra from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), with ground-based support from Keck HIRES. We employ curve of growth, apparent optical depth and profile fitting techniques to measure column densities and limits of many other species (H2, NaI, CI, CII, CIII, NI, NII, OI, SiII, PII, SIII, ArI and FeII) which allow us to determine related ratios such as D/O, D/N and the H2 fraction. Our efforts are concentrated on measuring gas-phase D/H, which is key to understanding Galactic chemical evolution and comparing it to predictions from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We find column densities log N(HI) = 20.41+-0.08, log N(DI)=15.75+-0.08 and log N(H2) = 19.33+-0.04, yielding a molecular hydrogen fraction of 0.14+-0.02 (2 sigma errors), with an excitation temperature of 143+-5K. The high HI column density implies that PG0038+199 lies outside of the Local Bubble; we estimate its distance to be 297 (+164,-104)pc (1 sigma). D/[HI+2H2] toward PG0038+199 is 1.91(+0.52,-0.42) e-5 (2 sigma). There is no evidence of component structure on the scale of Delta v > 8 km/s based on NaI, but there is marginal evidence for structure on smaller scales. The D/H value is high compared to the majority of recent D/H measurements, but consistent with the values for two other measurements at similar distances. D/O is in agreement with other distant measurements. We obtained high-resolution VLT and FUSE spectra of the quasar HE2347-4342 to study the properties of the intergalactic medium between redshifts z=2.0-2.9. The high-quality optical spectrum allows us to identify approximately 850 HeII absorption components with column densities between N~5X10^11 and $ 10^18 cm^-2. The reprocessed FUSE spectrum extends the wavelength coverage of the HeII absorption down to an observed wavelength of 920 A. Approximately 1400 HeII absorption components are identified, including 917 HeII Ly-alpha systems and some of their HeII Ly-beta, Ly-gamma, and Ly-delta counterparts. The ionization structure of HeII is complex, with approximately 90 components that are not detected in the hydrogen spectrum. These components may represent the effect of soft ionizing sources. The ratio Eta=N(HeII)/N(HI) varies approximately from unity to more than a thousand, with a median value of 62 and a distribution consistent with the intrinsic spectral indices of quasars. This suggests that the dominant ionizing field is from the accumulated quasar radiation, with contributions from other soft sources such as star-forming regions and obscured AGN, which do not ionize helium. We find an evolution in Eta toward smaller values at lower redshift, with the gradual disappearance of soft components. At redshifts z>2.7, the large but finite increase in the HeII opacity, Tau=5+/-1, suggests that we are viewing the end stages of a reionization process that began at an earlier epoch. Fits of the absorption profiles of unblended lines indicate comparable velocities between hydrogen and He^+ ions. Using Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the QSO PG1259+593, we detect D I Lyman-series absorption in high velocity cloud Complex C, a low-metallicity gas cloud falling onto the Milky Way. This is the first detection of atomic deuterium in the local universe in a location other than the nearby regions of the Galactic disk. A new Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) interferometer map of the H I 21 cm emission toward PG1259+593 indicates that the sight line passes through a compact concentration of neutral gas in Complex C. We find D/H = (2.2+/-0.7)x10^-5, O/H = (8.0+/-2.5)x10^-5, and D/O = 0.28+/-0.12. The metallicity of Complex C gas toward PG1259+593 is approximately 1/6 solar, as inferred from the oxygen abundance [O/H] = -0.79 (+0.12, -0.16). While we cannot rule out a value of D/H similar to that found for the local ISM, we can confidently exclude values as low as those determined recently for extended sight lines in the Galactic disk. Combined with the sub-solar metallicity estimate and the low nitrogen abundance, this conclusion lends support to the hypothesis that Complex C is located outside the Milky Way, rather than inside in material recirculated between the Galactic disk and halo. The value of D/H for Complex C is consistent with the primordial abundance of deuterium inferred from recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations of the cosmic microwave background and simple chemical evolution models that predict the amount of deuterium astration as a function of metallicity. We present FUSE observations of the interstellar gas toward 30 white dwarf and 1 subdwarf (SdO) stars. These sightlines probe the Local Bubble (LB) and the local interstellar medium (LISM) near the LB. Our survey detected only diffuse H_2 molecular clouds along six sightlines. There is no evidence from this study that H_2 exists well inside the perimeter of the LB. The kinematical temperature for H_2 is less than the usual temperature observed in the local interstellar clouds, implying different gas phases in the LISM. The relative abundance ratios of Si II, P II, and Fe II give insight about the dust content. These ratios vary, but are similar to the depletion patterns observed in warm and halo diffuse clouds in more distant sightlines in the Galaxy. The N I/O I and Ar I/O I ratios are significantly subsolar within the LB. Outside the LB a larger scatter is observed from subsolar to solar. Because Ar and N are only weakly depleted into dust grains if at all, the deficiencies of their neutral forms are likely due to photoionization. The evidence for significant ionization of N (and hence Ar) is strengthened by the detection and measurement of N II, which is a dominant ion for this element toward many sightlines. These observations imply that photoionization is the main ionization mechanism in the LISM and do not support the existence of a highly ionized condition in the past. In view of the variations observed in the different atomic and ionic ratios, the photoionization conditions vary significantly in the LB and the LISM. We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O {\small I} column densities from {\it HST}/STIS observations of the weak 1355 \AA intersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] using {\it HST}/STIS observations of \lya and {\it FUSE} observations of molecular hydrogen. The molecular hydrogen content of these sight lines ranges from f(H$_2$) = 2N(H$_2$)/[N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] = 0.03 to 0.47. The average $$ of 6.3$\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ mag$^{-1}$ with a standard deviation of 15% is consistent with previous surveys. The mean oxygen abundance along these sight lines, which probe a wide range of galactic environments in the distant ISM, is 10$^6$ \oh = $408 \pm 13$ (1 $\sigma$ in the mean). %$({\rm O/H})_{gas} = 408 \pm 14$(1 $\sigma$). We see no evidence for decreasing gas-phase oxygen abundance with increasing molecular hydrogen fraction and the relative constancy of \oh suggests that the component of dust containing the oxygen is not readily destroyed. We estimate that, if 60% of the dust grains are resilient against destruction by shocks, the distant interstellar total oxygen abundance can be reconciliated with the solar value derived from the most recent measurements %by Holweger and by Allende Prieto, Lambert & Asplund: of 10$^6$ \oh$_\odot$ = 517 $\pm$ 58 (1 $\sigma$). We note that the smaller oxygen abundances derived for the interstellar gas within 500 pc %by Meyer, Cardelli & Jura or from nearby B star surveys are consistent with a local elemental deficit., Comment: 9 figures, 37 pages

FUSE spectra of 100 extragalactic objects are analyzed to obtain measures of O VI absorption along paths through the Milky Way thick disk/halo. Strong O VI absorption over the approximate velocity range from -100 to 100 km/s reveals a widespread but highly irregular distribution of thick disk O VI, implying the existence of substantial amounts of hot gas with T ~ 3x10^5 K in the Milky Way halo. Large irregularities in the distribution of the absorbing gas are found to be similar over angular scales extending from less than one to 180 degrees, indicating a considerable amount of small and large scale structure in the gas. The overall distribution of Galactic O VI is not well described by a symmetrical plane-parallel layer of patchy O VI absorption. The simplest departure from such a model that provides a reasonable fit to the observations is a plane-parallel patchy absorbing layer with a scale height of 2.3 kpc, and a 0.25 dex excess of O VI in the northern Galactic polar region. The O VI absorption has a Doppler parameter b = 30 to 99 km/s, with an average value of 60 km/s . Thermal broadening alone cannot explain the large observed profile widths. The average O VI absorption velocities toward high latitude objects range from -46 to 82 km/s, with a sample average of 0 km/s and a standard deviation of 21 km/s. O VI associated with the thick disk moves both toward and away from the plane with roughly equal frequency. A combination of models involving the radiative cooling of hot fountain gas, the cooling of supernova bubbles in the halo, and the turbulent mixing of warm and hot halo gases is required to explain the presence of O VI and other highly ionized atoms found in the halo. We present FUSE observations of OVI absorption in a sample of 100 extragalactic targets and 2 distant halo stars. We describe the details of the calibration, alignment in velocity, continuum fitting, and manner in which contaminants were removed (Galactic H2, absorption intrinsic to the background target and intergalactic Ly-beta lines). We searched for OVI absorption in the velocity range -1200 to 1200 km/s. With a few exceptions, we only find OVI between -400 and 400 km/s; the exceptions may be intergalactic OVI. We discuss the separation of the observed OVI absorption into components associated with the Galactic halo and components at high-velocity, which are probably located in the neighborhood of the Galaxy. We describe the measurements of equivalent width and column density, and we analyze the different contributions to the errors. We conclude that low-velocity Galactic OVI absorption occurs along all sightlines - the few non-detections only occur in noisy spectra. We further show that high-velocity OVI is very common, having equivalent width >65 mAA in 50% of the sightlines and >30 mAA in 70% of the high-quality sightlines. The high-velocity OVI absorption has velocities relative to the LSR of +/-(100--330) km/s; there is no correlation between velocity and absorption strength. We present 50 km/s wide OVI channel maps. These show evidence for the imprint of Galactic rotation. They also highlight two known HI high-velocity clouds (complex~C and the Magellanic Stream). We report the results of an extensive FUSE study of high velocity OVI absorption along 102 complete sight lines through the Galactic halo. The high velocity OVI traces a variety of phenomena, including tidal interactions with the Magellanic Clouds, accretion of gas, outflow from the Galactic disk, warm/hot gas interactions in a highly extended Galactic corona, and intergalactic gas in the Local Group. We identify 85 high velocity OVI features at velocities of -500 < v(LSR) < +500 km/s along 59 of the 102 sight lines. Approximately 60% of the sky (and perhaps as much as 85%) is covered by high velocity H+ associated with the high velocity OVI. Some of the OVI is associated with known high velocity HI structures (e.g., the Magellanic Stream, Complexes A and C), while some OVI features have no counterpart in HI 21cm emission. The smaller dispersion in the OVI velocities in the GSR and LGSR reference frames compared to the LSR is necessary (but not conclusive) evidence that some of the clouds are extragalactic. Most of the OVI cannot be produced by photoionization, even if the gas is irradiated by extragalactic background radiation. Collisions in hot gas are the primary OVI ionization mechanism. We favor production of some of the OVI at the boundaries between warm clouds and a highly extended [R > 70 kpc], hot [T > 10^6 K], low-density [n < 10^-4 cm^-3] Galactic corona or Local Group medium. A hot Galactic corona or Local Group medium and the prevalence of high velocity OVI are consistent with predictions of galaxy formation scenarios. Distinguishing between the various phenomena producing high velocity OVI will require continuing studies of the distances, kinematics, elemental abundances, and physical states of the different types of high velocity OVI features found in this study. We present an analysis of interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the nearby white dwarf star HZ43A. The distance to this star is 68+/-13 pc, and the line of sight extends toward the north Galactic pole. Column densities of OI, NI, and NII were derived from spectra obtained by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the column density of DI was derived from a combination of our FUSE spectra and an archival HST GHRS spectrum, and the column density of HI was derived from a combination of the GHRS spectrum and values derived from EUVE data obtained from the literature. We find the following abundance ratios (with 2-sigma uncertainties): DI/HI = (1.66 +/- 0.28) x 10^-5, OI/HI = (3.63 +/- 0.84) x 10^-4, and NI/HI = (3.80 +/- 0.74) x 10^-5. The NII column density was slightly greater than that of NI, indicating that ionization corrections are important when deriving nitrogen abundances. Other interstellar species detected along the line of sight were CII, CIII, OVI, SiII, ArI, MgII, and FeII; an upper limit was determined for NIII. High resolution far-ultraviolet spectra of the O-type subdwarf BD +28 4211 were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to measure the interstellar deuterium, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances in this direction. The interstellar D I transitions are analyzed down to Lyman iota at 920.7 A. The star was observed several times at different target offsets in the direction of spectral dispersion. The aligned and coadded spectra have high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N =50-100). D I, N I, and O I transitions were analyzed with curve-of-growth and profile fitting techniques. A model of interstellar molecular hydrogen on the line of sight was derived from H2 lines in the FUSE spectra and used to help analyze some features where blending with H2 was significant. The H I column density was determined from high resolution HST/STIS spectra of Lyman alpha to be log(N HI) = 19.846+/-0.035 (2 sigma), which is higher than is typical for sight lines in the local ISM studied for D/H. We found that D/H =(1.39+/-0.21) E-5 (2 sigma) and O/H = (2.37+/-0.55) E-4 (2 sigma). Observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) have been used to determine the column densities of D I, O I, and N I along seven sight lines that probe the local interstellar medium (LISM) at distances from 37 pc to 179 pc. Five of the sight lines are within the Local Bubble and two penetrate the surrounding H I wall. Reliable values of N(H I) were determined for five of the sight lines from HST data, IUE data, and published EUVE measurements. The weighted mean of D I/H I for these five sight lines is (1.52 +/- 0.08) x10-5 (1 sigma uncertainty in the mean). It is likely that the D I/H I ratio in the Local Bubble has a single value. The D I/O I ratio for the five sight lines within the Local Bubble is (3.76 +/- 0.20) x10-2. It is likely that the O I column densities can serve as a proxy for H I in the Local Bubble. The weighted mean for O I/H I for the seven FUSE sight lines is (3.03 +/-0.21) x10-4, comparable to the weighted mean (3.43 +/- 0.15) x10-4 reported for 13 sight lines probing larger distances and higher column densities (Meyer et al. 1998, Meyer 2001). The FUSE weighted mean of N I/H I for the five sight lines is half that reported by Meyer et al. (1997) for seven sight lines with larger distances and higher column densities. This result combined with the variability of O I/N I (six sight lines) indicates that at the low column densities found in the LISM, nitrogen ionization balance is important. Thus, unlike O I, N I cannot be used as a proxy for H I or as a metallicity indicator in the LISM. We use Far Ultraviolet Spectrocopic Explorer (FUSE) observations to study interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the white dwarf WD1634-573 (d=37.1+/-2.6 pc). Combining our measurement of D I with a measurement of H I from Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer data, we find a D/H ratio toward WD1634-573 of D/H=(1.6+/-0.5)e-5. In contrast, multiplying our measurements of D I/O I=0.035+/-0.006 and D I/N I=0.27+/-0.05 with published mean Galactic ISM gas phase O/H and N/H ratios yields D/H(O)=(1.2+/-0.2)e-5 and D/H(N)=(2.0+/-0.4)e-5, respectively. Note that all uncertainties quoted above are 2 sigma. The inconsistency between D/H(O) and D/H(N) suggests that either the O I/H I and/or the N I/H I ratio toward WD1634-573 must be different from the previously measured average ISM O/H and N/H values. High-resolution spectra of the hot white dwarf G191-B2B, covering the wavelength region 905-1187A, were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). This data was used in conjunction with existing high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations to evaluate the total HI, DI, OI and NI column densities along the line of sight. Previous determinations of N(DI) based upon GHRS and STIS observations were controversial due to the saturated strength of the DI Lyman-alpha line. In the present analysis the column density of DI has been measured using only the unsaturated Lyman-beta and Lyman-gamma lines observed by FUSE. A careful inspection of possible systematic uncertainties tied to the modeling of the stellar continuum or to the uncertainties in the FUSE instrumental characteristics has been performed. The column densities derived are: log N(DI) = 13.40 +/-0.07, log N(OI) = 14.86 +/-0.07, and log N(NI) = 13.87 +/-0.07 quoted with 2-sigma uncertainties. The measurement of the HI column density by profile fitting of the Lyman-alpha line has been found to be unsecure. If additional weak hot interstellar components are added to the three detected clouds along the line of sight, the HI column density can be reduced quite significantly, even though the signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution at Lyman-alpha are excellent. The new estimate of N(HI) toward G191-B2B reads: log N(HI) = 18.18 +/-0.18 (2-sigma uncertainty), so that the average (D/H) ratio on the line of sight is: (D/H) = 1.66 (+0.9/-0.6) *10^-5 (2-sigma uncertainty)., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211-495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observations with different slits. We excluded all saturated lines in order to reduce possible systematic errors on the column density measurements. We report the determination of the average interstellar D/O and D/N ratios along this line of sight at the 95% confidence level: D/O = 4.0 +/-1.2 *10^-2; D/N = 4.4 +/-1.3 *10^-1. In conjunction with FUSE observations of other nearby sight lines, the results of this study will allow a deeper understanding of the present-day abundance of deuterium in the local interstellar medium and its evolution with time., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations are presented for WD0621-376, a DA white dwarf star in the local interstellar medium (LISM) at a distance of about 78 pc. The data have a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20-40 per 20 km/s resolution element and cover the wavelength range 905-1187 \AA. LISM absorption is detected in the lines of D I, C II, C II*, C III, N I, N II, N III, O I, Ar I, and Fe II. This sight line is partially ionized, with an ionized nitrogen fraction of > 0.23. We determine the ratio $D/O = (3.9 \pm ^{1.3}_{1.0})\times 10^{-2}$ (2$\sigma$). Assuming a standard interstellar oxygen abundance, we derive ${\rm D/H} \approx 1. 3 \times 10^{-5}$. Using the value of N(H I) derived from EUVE data gives a similar D/H ratio. The D I/N I ratio is $(3.3 \pm ^{1.0}_{0.8})\times 10^{-1}$ (2$\sigma$)., Comment: accepted for publication in the ApJS

We present measurements of the column densities of interstellar DI and OI made with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), and of HI made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) toward the sdOB star Feige 110 [(l,b) = (74.09, -59.07); d = 179 +265 -67 pc; z = -154 +57 -227 pc]. Our determination of the DI column density made use of curve of growth fitting and profile fitting analyses, while our OI column density determination used only curve of growth techniques. The HI column density was estimated by fitting the damping wings of the interstellar Ly alpha profile. We find log N(DI) = 15.47 +/- 0.06, log N(OI) = 16.73 +/- 0.10, and log N(HI) = 20.14 +0.13 -0.20 (all errors 2 sigma). This implies D/H = (2.14 +/- 0.82) x 10^-5, D/O = (5.50 +1.64 -1.33) x 10^-2, and O/H = (3.89 +/- 1.67) x 10^-4. Taken with the FUSE results reported in companion papers (Moos et al. 2001) and previous measurements of the local interstellar medium, this suggests the possibility of spatial variability in D/H for sight lines exceeding ~100 pc. This result may constrain models which characterize the mixing time and length scales of material in the local interstellar medium., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures. We present the first observations of the circumstellar (CS) disk system 51 Ophiuchi with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. We detect several absorption lines arising from the unusual metastable atomic species NI (2D), NI (2P), and SII (2D). These levels lie 1.8 - 3.6 eV above the ground level and have radiative decay lifetimes of 2 days or less, indicating that the lines arise from warm CS gas. The high S/N FUSE spectra, obtained six days apart, also show time-variable absorption features arising from NI, NII, OI (1D), and FeIII, which are redshifted with respect to the stellar velocity. The resolved redshifted absorption extends over many tens of km/s (40 for NI, 100 for NII, 65 for OI, and 84 for FeIII). We calculate column densities for all the variable infalling CS gasses, using the apparent optical depth method. The FeIII and NII infalling gasses must be produced through collisional ionization, and the ionization fraction of nitrogen suggests a gas temperature between 20000 and 34000 K. The infalling gas shows a peculiar, non-solar composition, with nitrogen and iron more abundant than carbon. We also set upper limits on the line-of-sight column densities of molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These observations strengthen the connection between 51 Oph and the older debris-disk system Beta Pictoris, and indicate that there may be infalling planetesimals in the 51 Oph system., Comment: 11 pages, 4 color figures, LaTex2e, accepted for publication in ApJ

The neutral hydrogen and the ionized helium absorption in the spectra of quasars are unique probes of structure in the early universe. We present Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the line of sight to the quasar HE2347-4342 in the 1000-1187 A band at a resolving power of 15,000. We resolve the He II Ly alpha absorption as a discrete forest of absorption lines in the redshift range 2.3 to 2.7. About 50 percent of these features have H I counterparts with column densities log N(HI) > 12.3 that account for most of the observed opacity in He II Ly alpha. The He II to H I column density ratio ranges from 1 to >1000 with an average of ~80. Ratios of <100 are consistent with photoionization of the absorbing gas by a hard ionizing spectrum resulting from the integrated light of quasars, but ratios of >100 in many locations indicate additional contributions from starburst galaxies or heavily filtered quasar radiation. The presence of He II Ly alpha absorbers with no H I counterparts indicates that structure is present even in low-density regions, consistent with theoretical predictions of structure formation through gravitational instability., Comment: 8 pages, 4 PostScript figures, uses aaspp4.sty. We report the first Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) measurements of diffuse O VI (lambda,lambda 1032,1038) emission from the general diffuse interstellar medium outside of supernova remnants or superbubbles. We observed a 30arcsec x 30arcsec region of the sky centered at l = 315 and b = -41. From the observed intensities (2930+/-290(random)+/-410(systematic) and 1790+/-260(random)+/-250(systematic) photons/cm/cm/s/sr in the 1032 and 1038 Angstrom emission lines, respectively), derived equations, and assumptions about the source location, we calculate the intrinsic intensity, electron density, thermal pressure, and emitting depth. The intensities are too large for the emission to originate solely in the Local Bubble. Thus, we conclude that the Galactic thick disk and lower halo also contribute. High velocity clouds are ruled out because there are none near the pointing direction. The calculated emitting depth is small, indicating that the O VI-bearing gas fills a small volume. The observations can also be used to estimate the cooling rate of the hot interstellar medium and constrain models. The data also yield the first intensity measurement of the C II 3s2 S1/2 to 2p2 P3/2 emission line at 1037 Angstroms and place upper limits on the intensities of ultraviolet line emission from C I, C III, Si II, S III, S IV, S VI, and Fe III., Comment: 30 pages including 5 figures and 5 tables; submitted to ApJ, October 2000; accepted by ApJ, May 2001

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer FUSE observations of the bright binary system Capella (Alpha Aurigae; G1 III + G8 III) reveal a rich emission line spectrum containing neutral and ionic species, among them H I, O I, C III, O VI, S VI, Ne V and Ne VI. In addition the Fe XVIII 974.85 A line, formed at temperatures of approx. 6 x 10^6 K, is detected. Whereas the chromospheric and transition region emission is dominated by that from the G1 giant, consistent with results from previous ultraviolet observations, Fe XVIII is formed largely in the G8 giant atmosphere. Line ratios from C III suggest densities of 2-8 x 10^10 cm^-3, although anomalous line profiles of the 1176 transition may signal optical depth effects. We discuss the interstellar absorption lines found in FUSE spectra of the Wolf-Rayet binary Sk 108, located in the northeastern part of the main ``bar'' of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra cover the wavelength range 988-1187 Angstroms, at a resolution of about 12,000 and S/N of 20--40. We use detailed component information from higher resolution near-UV and optical spectra to model the far-UV lines of similarly distributed species. Both the Galactic and SMC gas toward Sk 108 seem to be predominantly neutral, though a significant fraction of the SMC gas is ionized. The column densities of P II, S II, and Ar I are consistent with essentially solar ratios, relative to N(Zn II), in both the Galactic and SMC gas; the column density of N I remains somewhat uncertain. Molecular hydrogen is present in the Galactic gas, with properties similar to those found in low mean density Galactic lines of sight and in the Galactic gas toward several other LMC and SMC stars. We report a tentative detection of H_2 in the SMC gas for J = 1 and 3, with rotational level populations consistent with an excitation temperature of order 1000 K -- similar to the H_2 found in diffuse Galactic gas toward zeta Pup. Strong absorption from N III, S III, and Fe III has revealed a significant ionized component, particularly in the SMC; O VI is present, but relatively weak, especially in the Galactic gas. The N(C IV)/N(O VI) ratio varies somewhat within the SMC --- suggesting that several processes may contribute to the observed high ion abundances., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to ApJ

We present an abundance analysis of the far-ultraviolet (905--1187 A) spectrum of the subdwarf B star PG0749+658, obtained by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The data have a resolution of about R = lambda / Delta lambda = 12000--15000 (20--25 km/s). We determine C, N, Si, P, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni abundances, and upper limits on the abundance of Cl and V, using a grid of synthetic spectra based on a LTE stellar atmosphere model. He, C, N, Si, and Cl are depleted by a factor of >~10 with respect to solar, while P, S, and Fe are diminished by less than a factor of 10. We measure a solar abundance of Cr, Mn, and Co and a Ni enhancement of ~0.6 dex. We compare these values to predictions based on radiative levitation theory. The metal deficient starburst galaxy IZw18 has been observed with FUSE in a search for H2 molecules. The spectrum obtained with an aperture covering the full galaxy shows no absorption lines of diffuse H2 at the radial velocity of the galaxy. The upper limit for the diffuse H2 column density is found to be very low: N(H2) <~ 10^15 cm-2 (10 sigma), unlike our Galaxy where H2 is generally present for even low HI column densities. Although the HI column density is here as high as N(HI) ~ 2.10^21 cm-2, we observe 2N(H2)/N(HI)<< 10^-6. We cannot exclude the possibility that some H2 could be in very dense, small and discrete clumps which cannot be detected with the present observation. However, the remarkable absence of diffuse H2 in this metal-poor galaxy can be explained by the low abundance of dust grains (needed to form this molecule from H-atoms), the high ultraviolet flux and the low density of the HI cloud surrounding the star-forming regions. Thus having eliminated diffuse H2 as a significant contributor to the total mass, it appears that the gas of the galaxy is dominated by HI, and that the high dynamical mass is not composed of cold and diffuse baryonic dark matter., Comment: To appear in FUSE special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. 4 pages + 3 figures

The Lyman and Werner band systems of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) occur in the far UV range below 1200 A. The high sensitivity of the FUSE mission can give access, at moderate resolution, to hot stars shining through translucent clouds, in the hope of observing molecular cores in which deuterium is essentially in the form of HD. Thus, the measurement of the HD/H2 ratio may become a new powerful tool to evaluate the deuterium abundance, D/H, in the interstellar medium. We report here on the detection of HD toward the high extinction star HD 73882 [E(B-V)=0.72]. A preliminary analysis is presented., Comment: 4 pages + 4 .ps figures. Launch of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has been followed by an extensive period of calibration and characterization as part of the preparation for normal satellite operations. Major tasks carried out during this period include initial coalignment, focusing and characterization of the four instrument channels, and a preliminary measurement of the resolution and throughput performance of the instrument. We describe the results from this test program, and present preliminary estimates of the on-orbit performance of the FUSE satellite based on a combination of this data and prelaunch laboratory measurements., Comment: 8 pages, including 3 figures. The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observes light in the far-ultraviolet spectral region, 905 - 1187 A with high spectral resolution. The instrument consists of four coaligned prime-focus telescopes and Rowland spectrographs with microchannel plate detectors. Two of the telescope channels use Al:LiF coatings for optimum reflectivity from approximately 1000 to 1187 A and the other two use SiC coatings for optimized throughput between 905 and 1105 A. The gratings are holographically ruled to largely correct for astigmatism and to minimize scattered light. The microchannel plate detectors have KBr photocathodes and use photon counting to achieve good quantum efficiency with low background signal. The sensitivity is sufficient to examine reddened lines of sight within the Milky Way as well as active galactic nuclei and QSOs for absorption line studies of both Milky Way and extra-galactic gas clouds. We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the sightline toward the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 876, which passes through high velocity cloud (HVC) complex C. This sight line demonstrates the ability of FUSE to measure ionic absorption lines in Galactic HVCs. High velocity absorption is clearly seen in both members of the O VI doublet. This is the first detection of O VI in a neutral hydrogen HVC. One component of HVC complex C is resolved in multiple Fe II lines from which we derive N(Fe II)/N(H I)=0.48 (Fe/H)_solar. This value of N(Fe II)/N(H I) implies that the metallicity of complex C along this sightline may be higher than that along the Mrk 290 sightline (0.1 solar) found by Wakker et al. (1999). On the other hand, if the metallicity of complex C is also 0.1 solar along this line of sight, the observed value of N(Fe II)/(N(H I) suggests there may be a significan t amount of H+ along the line of sight. In any case, little, if any, iron can be depleted into dust grains if the intrinsic metallicity of complex C is subsolar. Absorption from complex C is also seen in C II, N I, and N II, and upper limits based on non-detections can be determined for Ar I, P II, and Fe III. Although molecular hydrogen in the Milky Way is obvious in the FUSE data, no H_2 absorption is seen in the high velocity cloud to a limit N(H_2)<2.0x10^14 cm^-2. Future FUSE observations of extragalactic objects behind Galactic high velocity clouds will allow us to better constrain models of HVC origins., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in the FUSE Special Issue of ApJ Letters

We report the results of initial FUSE observations of molecular hydrogen (H2) in translucent clouds. These clouds have greater optical depth than any of the diffuse clouds previously observed for far-UV H2 absorption, and provide new insights into the physics and chemistry of such regions. Our initial results involve observations of HD 73882, a well-studied southern hemisphere star lying behind substantial interstellar material (E(B-V) = 0.72; A_V = 2.44). We find a total H2 column density, N(H2) = 1.2 x 10^{21} cm^{-2}, about three times larger than the values for diffuse clouds previously measured in the far-UV. The gas kinetic temperature indicated by the ratio N(J=1)/N(J=0) is 58 +/- 10 K. With the aid of ground-based data to calculate an appropriate multi-component curve of growth, we have determined column densities for all rotational levels up to J = 7. The J >= 2 states can be reasonably fitted with a rotational excitation temperature of 307 +/- 23 K. Both the kinetic and rotational temperatures are similar to those found in previous investigations of diffuse clouds. The ratios of carbonaceous molecules to hydrogen molecules are also similar to ratios in diffuse clouds, suggesting a similar chemistry for this line of sight., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, to appear in ApJ Letters (FUSE first-results issue)

Far-ultraviolet spectra of 11 AGNs observed by FUSE are analyzed to obtain measures of O VI 1031.93 A absorption occurring over very long paths through Milky Way halo gas. Strong O VI absorption is detected along 10 of 11 sight lines. Values of log [N(O VI) sin|b|] range from 13.80 to 14.64 with a median value of 14.21. The observations reveal the existence of a widespread but irregular distribution of O VI in the Milky Way halo. Combined with estimates of the O VI mid-plane density, n0 = 2x10^(-8) cm^(-3), from the Copernicus satellite, the FUSE observations imply an O VI exponential scale height of 2.7+/-0.4 kpc. We find that N(C IV)/N(O VI) ranges from 0.15 in the disk to 0.6 along four extragalactic sight lines. The changing ionization state of the gas from the disk to the halo is consistent with a systematic decrease in the scale heights of Si IV, C IV, N V, to O VI from ~5.1 to ~2.7 kpc. While conductive heating models can account for the highly ionized atoms at low |z|, a combination of models (and processes) appears to be required to explain the highly ionized atoms found in the halo. The greater scale heights of Si IV and C IV compared to O VI suggest that some of the Si IV and C IV in the halo is produced in turbulent mixing layers or by photoionization by hot halo stars or the extragalactic background., Comment: 8 pages, AASTeX preprint format. We describe a moderate-resolution FUSE mini-survey of H2 in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, using four hot stars and four AGN as background sources. FUSE spectra of nearly every stellar and extragalactic source exhibit numerous absorption lines from the H2 Lyman and Werner bands between 912 and 1120 A. One extragalactic sightline, PKS 2155-304, with low N(HI) shows no detectable H2 and could be the "Lockman Hole" of molecular gas, of importance for QSO absorption-line studies. We measure H2 column densities in low rotational states (J = 0 and 1) to derive rotational and/or kinetic temperatures of diffuse interstellar gas. The higher-J abundances can constrain models of the UV radiation fields and gas densities. In three optically thick clouds toward extragalactic sources, we find n(H) ~ 30-50 cm(-3) and cloud thicknesses of 2-3 pc. The rotational temperatures for H2 at high Galactic latitude, = 107 +/- 17 K (seven sightlines) and 120 +/- 13 K (three optically thick clouds), are higher than those in the Copernicus sample composed primarily of targets in the disk. We find no evidence for great differences in the abundance or state of excitation of H2 between sight lines in the Galaxy and those in the SMC and LMC. We have used moderate-resolution (FWHM ~ 25 km/sec) spectra of AGNs and QSOs observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to make the first definitive measurements of absorption by hot gas in high velocity clouds (HVCs) at large distances from the Galactic plane. Seven of the 11 sight lines studied exhibit high velocity (|V(LSR)| > 100 km/sec) O VI 1031.93 A absorption with log N(O VI) = 13.79-14.62. High velocity O VI absorption is detected in the distant gas of H I HVC Complex C, the Magellanic Stream, several HVCs believed to be in the Local Group, and the outer Galaxy. The fraction of O VI in HVCs along the seven sight lines containing high velocity O VI averages about 30 percent, with a full range of 10-70 percent. The O VI detections imply that hot (log T(K) = 5-6) collisionally-ionized gas is an important constituent of the HVCs since O VI is difficult to produce by photoionization unless the path lengths over which the absorption occurs are very large (>100 kpc). The association of O VI with H I HVCs in many cases suggests that the O VI may be produced at interfaces or mixing layers between the H I clouds and hot, low density gas in the Galactic corona or Local Group. We describe a moderate-resolution (20-25 km/s) FUSE study of the low-redshift intergalactic medium. We report on studies of 7 extragalactic sightlines and 12 Ly-beta absorbers that correspond to Ly-alpha lines detected by HST/GHRS and STIS. These absorbers appear to contain a significant fraction of the low-z baryons and were a major discovery of the HST spectrographs. Using FUSE data, with 40 mA (4-sigma) Lyb detection limits, we have employed the equivalent width ratio of Lyb/Lya and occasionally higher Lyman lines, to determine the doppler parameter, b, and accurate column densities, N(HI), for moderately saturated lines. We detect Lyb absorption corresponding to all Lya lines with EW > 200 mA. The Lyb/Lya ratios yield a preliminary distribution function of doppler parameters, with mean = 31.4 +/- 7.4 km/s and median b = 28 km/s, comparable to values at redshifts z = 2.0-2.5. If thermal, these b-values correspond to T(HI) ~ 50,000 K, although the inferred doppler parameters are considerably less than the widths derived from Lya profile fitting, = 0.52. The typical increase in column density over that derived from profile fitting is Delta[log N(HI)] = 0.3, but ranges up to 1.0 dex. Our data suggest that the low-z Lya absorbers contain sizable non-thermal motions or velocity components in the line profile, perhaps arising from cosmological expansion and infall., Comment: To appear in ApJL (FUSE first-results issue), 4 pages + 3 figures (.ps)

The first study of the local interstellar medium (LISM) toward Puppis-Vela (l = 245\degr to 275\degr, b = -15\degr to +5\degr, d < 200 pc) is presented in this paper. A study of the locations, sizes, and physical characteristics of local interstellar gas, i.e. ``astronephography,'' is included, and relies upon the improved distance measurements provided by Hipparcos parallax measurements. All spectra of more distant sight lines contain absorption features due to intervening local gas, and more distant structures can only be studied accurately if components due to the LISM have been isolated. Towards this end, high resolution (R ~ 95,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N ~ 110 to 250) Na I spectra of 11 nearby stars in the direction of Puppis-Vela have been obtained. Toward Puppis-Vela, absorption due to the LIC was not observed, but components at three distinct velocities were found, and the extent of the local gas producing the features was estimated. The conclusions regarding the UV spectrum of gamma^2 Vel presented by Fitzpatrick & Spitzer (1994) were re-examined in light of this new LISM data, and the ambiguity in their conclusions about several absorption components is resolved. The stars in Puppis-Vela flank the region of the apparent extension of the Local Bubble (or Cavity) known as the beta CMa tunnel,and measurements of the Na I column density towards the sample stars have been used to modify existing estimates of the extent of the tunnel. A compilation of all existing Na I observations of < 200 pc sight lines around the tunnel reveal that low column densities have been exclusively detected within l ~ 210\degr to 250\degr,and b ~ -21\degr to -9\degr. Near the Galactic plane,at latitudes -10\degr < b < 0\degr and d ~< 150 pc, the tunnel is confined to l < 270\degr, a lower longitude than was previously reported., Comment: 18 pages plus 7 figures and 9 tables. Visual and ultraviolet spatially resolved (~ 0."1) spectra of SN 1987A obtained on days 3715 and 3743 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope show that the high-velocity SN debris is colliding with circumstellar gas. Very broad Ly-alpha emission with velocities extending to ~ +/- 20,000 km/s originates inside the inner circumstellar ring and appears to fill most of the surface area within 0."67 +/- 0."03 (0.14 pc at a distance of 50 kpc) of the ring's center. The observed Ly-alpha flux from the shocked ejecta is (1.85 +/- 0.53) 10^{-13} erg/cm2/s and (1.25 +/- 0.51) 10^{-12} erg/cm2/s after correcting for extinction. A spatially unresolved blue-shifted emission feature was discovered in H-alpha (and other lines) on the inner ring at p.a. 31 +/- 8 degree. The H-alpha emission extends to -250 km/s with no corresponding red-shifted emission. This highly localized interaction appears to be the initial contact of the supernova blast wave with an inward protrusion of the inner ring. The broad Ly-alpha emission and the `hot spot' are separate interaction phemonena associated with the reverse and forward shocks, respectively.
