We have studied the diluted Heisenberg spin glass model in a 3-component random field for the commonly-used one-dimensional long-range model where the probability that two spins separated by a distance $r$ interact with one another falls as $1/r^{2 \sigma}$, for two values of $\sigma$, $0.75$ and $0.85$. No de Almeida-Thouless line is expected at these $\sigma$ values. The spin glass correlation length $\xi_{\text{SG}}$ varies with the random field as expected from the Imry-Ma argument and the droplet scaling picture of spin glasses. However, when $\xi_{\text{SG}}$ becomes comparable to the system size $L$, there are departures which we attribute to the features deriving from the TNT picture of spin glasses. For the case $\sigma =0.85$ these features go away for system sizes with $L >L^*$, where $L^*$ is large ($\approx 4000-8000$ lattice spacings). In the case of $\sigma = 0.75$ we have been unable to study large enough systems to determine its value of $L^*$. We sketch a renormalization group scenario to explain how these features could arise. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. Using the low background environment and segmented geometry of CUORE, we establish the sensitivity of tonne-scale sub-Kelvin detectors to diverse signatures of new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg$^{-1}$ and 0.1 nBq cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

One of the key predictions of Parisi's broken replica symmetry theory of spin glasses is the existence of a phase transition in an applied field to a state with broken replica symmetry. This transition takes place at the de Almeida-Thouless (AT) line in the $h-T$ plane. We have studied this line in the power-law diluted Heisenberg spin glass in which the probability that two spins separated by a distance $r$ interact with each other falls as $1/r^{2\sigma}$. In the presence of a random vector-field of variance $h_r^2$ the phase transition is in the universality class of the Ising spin glass in a field. Tuning $\sigma$ is equivalent to changing the dimension $d$ of the short-range system, with the relation being $d =2/(2\sigma -1)$ for $\sigma < 2/3$. We have found by numerical simulations that $h_{\text{AT}}^2 \sim (2/3 -\sigma)$ implying that the AT line does not exist below $6$ dimensions and that the Parisi scheme is not appropriate for spin glasses in three dimensions., Comment: 20 pages, 2+2 tables, 12+2+6 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2301.03615

We have studied in detail the $M$-$p$ balanced spin glass model, especially the case $p=4$. These types of model have relevance to structural glasses. The models possess two kinds of broken replica states; those with one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and those with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB). To determine which arises requires studying the Landau expansion to quintic order. There are 9 quintic order coefficients, and 5 quartic order coefficients, whose values we determine for this model. We show that it is only for $2 \leq M < 2.4714 \cdots$ that the transition at mean-field level is to a state with FRSB, while for larger $M$ values there is either a continuous transition to a state with 1RSB (when $ M \leq 3$) or a discontinuous transition for $M > 3$. The Gardner transition from a 1RSB state at low temperatures to a state with FRSB also requires the Landau expansion to be taken to quintic order. Our result for the form of FRSB in the Gardner phase is similar to that found when $2 \leq M < 2.4714\cdots$, but differs from that given in the early paper of Gross et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 304 (1985)]. Finally we discuss the effects of fluctuations on our mean-field solutions using the scheme of H\"{o}ller and Read [Phys. Rev. E 101, 042114 (2020)}] and argue that such fluctuations will remove both the continuous 1RSB transition and discontinuous 1RSB transitions when $8 >d \geq 6$ leaving just the FRSB continuous transition. We study the AT line in the one-dimensional power-law diluted XY spin glass model, in which the probability that two spins separated by a distance $r$ interact with each other, decays as $1/r^{2\sigma}$. We develop a heat bath algorithm to equilibrate XY spins; using this in conjunction with the standard parallel tempering and overrelaxation sweeps, we carry out large scale Monte Carlo simulations. For $\sigma=0.6$ which is in the mean-field regime, we find clear evidence for an AT line. For $\sigma = 0.75$, there is evidence from finite size scaling studies for an AT transition but for $\sigma = 0.85$, the evidence for a transition is non-existent. We have also studied these systems at fixed temperature varying the field and discovered that at both $\sigma = 0.75$ and at $\sigma =0.85$ there is evidence of an AT transition! Confusingly, the correlation length and spin glass susceptibility as a function of the field are both entirely consistent with the predictions of the droplet picture and hence the non-existence of an AT line. The evidence from our simulations points to the complete absence of the AT line in dimensions outside the mean-field region and to the correctness of the droplet picture. Previous simulations which suggested there was an AT line can be attributed to the consequences of studying systems which are just too small. The collapse of our data to the droplet scaling form is poor for $\sigma = 0.75$ and to some extent also for $\sigma = 0.85$, when the correlation length becomes of the order of the length of the system, due to the existence of excitations which only cost a free energy of $O(1)$, just as envisaged in the TNT picture of the ordered state of spin glasses. However, for the case of $\sigma = 0.85$ we can provide evidence that for larger system sizes, droplet scaling will prevail even when the correlation length is comparable to the system size., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

The search for a dark photon holds considerable interest in the physics community. Such a force carrier would begin to illuminate the dark sector. Many experiments have searched for such a particle, but so far it has proven elusive. In recent years the concept of a low mass dark photon has gained popularity in the physics community. Of particular recent interest is the $^8$Be and $^4$He anomaly, which could be explained by a new fifth force carrier with a mass of 17 MeV/$c^2$. The proposed DarkLight experiment would search for this potential low mass force carrier at ARIEL in the 10-20 MeV e$^+$e$^-$ invariant mass range. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate as to whether collaboration in coworking spaces contributes to firm innovativeness and impacts the business models of organizations in a positive manner. Methodology: This paper includes primary data from 75 organizations in 17 coworking spaces and uses quantitative research methods. The methodology includes multiple statistical methods, such as principal component analysis, correlation analysis as well as linear and binary regression analysis. Results: The results show a positive interrelation between collaboration and innovation, indicating that coworkers are able to improve their innovative capabilities by making use of strategic partnerships in coworking spaces. Further, this study shows that business models are significantly affected by the level of collaboration in coworking spaces, which suggests that coworking is a promoting force for business model development or business model innovation. Contributions: The paper contributes to management literature and represents the first empirical investigations which focuses on the effects of collaboration on a firm-level in coworking spaces. Practical implications: The results indicate that organizations in coworking spaces should embrace a collaborative mindset and should actively seek out collaborative alliances and partnerships, as doing such is shown to increase their innovativeness and/or develop their business model. Future Research: Future research should focus on the antecedents of collaboration or could investigate the effects of collaboration in coworking spaces on a community level.

The free energy landscape of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrik (SK) Ising spin glass is simple in the framework of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) equations as each solution (which are minima of the free energy) has associated with it a nearby index-one saddle point. The free energy barrier to escape the minimum is just the difference between the saddle point free energy and that at its associated minimum. This difference is calculated for the states with free energies $f > f_c$. It is very small for these states, decreasing as $1/N^2$, where $N$ is the number of spins in the system. These states are not marginally stable. We argue that such small barriers are why numerical studies never find these states when $N$ is large. Instead the states which are found are those which have marginal stability. For them the barriers are at least of $O(1)$. $f_c$ is the free energy per spin below which the states develop broken replica-symmetry like overlaps with each other. In the regime $f < f_c$ we can only offer some possibilities based around scaling arguments. One of these suggest that the barriers might become as large as $N^{1/3}$. That might be consistent with recent numerical studies on the Viana-Bray model, which were at variance with the expectations of Cugliandolo and Kurchan for the SK model., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

Simulational studies of spin glasses in the last decade have focussed on the so-called replicon exponent $\alpha$ as a means of determining whether the low-temperature phase of spin glasses is described by the replica symmetry breaking picture of Parisi or by the droplet-scaling picture. On the latter picture, it should be zero, but we shall argue that it will only be zero for systems of linear dimension $L > L^*$. The crossover length $L^*$ may be of the order of hundreds of lattice spacings in three dimensions and approach infinity in 6 dimensions. We use the droplet-scaling picture to show that the apparent non-zero value of $\alpha$ when $L < L^*$ should be $2 \theta$, where $\theta$ is the domain wall energy scaling exponent, This formula is in reasonable agreement with the reported values of $\alpha$., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. We have studied a class of marginally jammed states in a system of hard disks confined in a narrow channel---a quasi-one-dimensional system---whose exponents are not those predicted by theories valid in the infinite dimensional limit. The exponent $\gamma$ which describes the distribution of small gaps takes the value $1$ rather than the infinite dimensional value $0.41269\dots$. Our work shows that there exist jammed states not found within the tiling approach of Ashwin and Bowles. The Gardner length scale $\xi$ is the correlation length in the vicinity of the Gardner transition, which is an avoided transition in glasses where the phase space of the glassy phase fractures into smaller sub-basins on experimental time scales. We argue that $\xi$ grows like $ \sim \sqrt{B_{\infty}/G_{\infty}}$, where $B_{\infty}$ is the bulk modulus and $G_{\infty}$ is the shear modulus, both measured in the high-frequency limit of the glassy state. We suggest that $\xi$ might be inferred from stress-stress correlation functions, which is more practical for experimental investigation than studying two copies of the system, which can only be done in numerical simulations. Recent laboratory experiments of Bolles et al. (2019) demonstrate that an abrupt change in bottom topography can trigger anomalous statistics in randomized surface waves. Motivated by these observations, Majda et al. (2019) developed a theoretical framework, based on deterministic and statistical analysis of the truncated Korteweg-de Vries (TKdV) system, that successfully captures key qualitative features of the experiments, including the robust emergence of anomalous statistics and heightened skewness in the outgoing wavefield. Here, we extend these parallel experimental and modeling efforts with several new findings that have resulted from a synergetic interaction between the two. By precisely relating model parameters to physical ones, we calibrate the model inverse temperature to the specific conditions present in the experiments, thereby permitting a quantitative comparison. We find theoretically predicted distributions of surface displacement to match the experimental measurements with surprising detail. Prompted by the presence of surface slope in the TKdV Hamiltonian, we present new experimental measurements on surface slope statistics and compare them to model predictions. Analysis of some deterministic trajectories of TKdV elucidates the experimental length and time scales required for the statistical transition to a skewed state. Finally, the theory predicts a peculiar relationship between the outgoing displacement skewness and the change in slope variance, specifically how their ratio depends on the wave amplitude and depth ratio. New experimental measurements confirm this prediction in spectacular fashion.

The fully-connected Ising $p$-spin model has for $p >2$ a discontinuous phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a stable state with one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB). However, simulations in three dimension do not look like these mean-field results and have features more like those which would arise with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB). To help understand how this might come about we have studied in the fully connected $p$-spin model the state of two-step replica symmetry breaking (2RSB). It has a free energy degenerate with that of 1RSB, but the weight of the additional peak in $P(q)$ vanishes. We expect that the state with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) is also degenerate with that of 1RSB. We suggest that finite size effects will give a non-vanishing weight to the FRSB features, as also will fluctuations about the mean-field solution. Transport of viscous fluid through porous media is a direct consequence of the pore structure. Here we investigate transport through a specific class of two-dimensional porous geometries, namely those formed by fluid-mechanical erosion. We investigate the tortuosity and dispersion by analyzing the first two statistical moments of tracer trajectories. For most initial configurations, tortuosity decreases in time as a result of erosion increasing the porosity. However, we find that tortuosity can also increase transiently in certain cases. The porosity-tortuosity relationships that result from our simulations are compared with models available in the literature. Asymptotic dispersion rates are also strongly affected by the erosion process, as well as by the number and distribution of the eroding bodies. Finally, we analyze the pore size distribution of an eroding geometry. The simulations are performed by combining a high-fidelity boundary integral equation solver for the fluid equations, a second-order stable time stepping method to simulate erosion, and new numerical methods to stably and accurately resolve nearly-touching eroded bodies and particle trajectories near the eroding bodies.

We formulate a model for the dynamic growth of a membrane developing in a flow as the result of a precipitation reaction, a situation inspired by recent microfluidic experiments. The precipitating solid introduces additional forces on the fluid and eventually forms a membrane that is fixed in the flow due to adhesion with a substrate. A key challenge is that the location of the immobile membrane is unknown $\textit{a priori}$. To model this situation, we use a multiphase framework with fluid and membrane phases; the aqueous chemicals exist as scalar fields that react within the fluid to induce phase change. To verify that the model exhibits desired fluid-structure behaviors, we make a few simplifying assumptions to obtain a reduced form of the equations that is amenable to exact solution. This analysis demonstrates no-slip behavior on the developing membrane without $\textit{a priori}$ assumptions on its location. The model has applications towards precipitate reactions where the precipitate greatly affects the surrounding flow, a situation appearing in many laboratory and geophysical contexts including the hydrothermal vent theory for the origin of life. More generally, this model can be used to address fluid-structure interaction problems that feature the dynamic generation of structures.

We show that the only solutions of the TAP equations for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of Ising spin glasses which can be found by iteration are those whose free energy lies on the border between replica symmetric and broken replica symmetric states, when the number of spins $N$ is large. Convergence to this same borderline also happens in quenches from a high temperature initial state to a locally stable state where each spin is parallel to its local field; both are examples of self-organized criticality. At this borderline the band of eigenvalues of the Hessian associated with a solution extends to zero, so the states reached have marginal stability. We have also investigated the factors which determine the free energy difference between a stationary solution corresponding to a saddle point and its associated minimum, which is the barrier which has to be surmounted to escape from the vicinity of a TAP minimum or pure state., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, modified text and figures, references added

The leading term for the average height of the barriers which could separate pure states in Ising spin glasses is calculated using instanton methods. It is finite in dimensions $d < 6$. Replica symmetry breaking requires that the barriers between pure states are infinite in the thermodynamic limit, as finite barriers allow thermal mixing of pure states. As a consequence, a replica symmetry broken phase cannot survive when $d < 6$. However, for $d > 6$ no similar instanton solution exists., Comment: 5 pages, one figure. Further details added

We perform linear and nonlinear stability analysis for thermal convection in a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium. We use a coupled system, with the Navier-Stokes equations and Darcy's equation governing the free-flow and the porous regions respectively. Incorporating a dynamic pressure term in the Lions interface condition (which specifies the normal force balance across the fluid-medium interface) permits an energy bound on the typically uncooperative nonlinear advection term, enabling new nonlinear stability results. Within certain regimes, the nonlinear stability thresholds agree closely with the linear ones, and we quantify the differences that exist. We then compare stability thresholds produced by several common variants of the tangential interface conditions, using both numerics and asymptotics in the small Darcy number limit. Finally, we investigate the transition between full convection and fluid-dominated convection using both numerics and a heuristic theory. This heuristic theory is based on comparing the ratio of the Rayleigh number in each domain to its corresponding critical value, and it is shown to agree reasonably well with the numerics regarding how the transition depends on the depth ratio, the Darcy number, and the thermal-diffusivity ratio.

A regular-grid volume-integration algorithm is developed for the non-homogeneous 3D Stokes equation. Based upon the observation that the Stokeslet ${\mathcal U}$ is the Laplacian of a function ${\mathcal H}$, the volume integral is reformulated as a simple boundary integral, plus a remainder domain integral. The modified source term in this remainder integral is everywhere zero on the boundary and can therefore be continuously extended as zero to a regular grid covering the domain. The volume integral can then be evaluated on the grid. Applying this method to the Navier-Stokes equations will require obtaining velocity gradients, and thus an efficient algorithm for post-processing these derivatives is also discussed. To validate the numerical implementation, test results employing a linear element Galerkin approximation are presented.
