Young carers support family members affected by disability or a health condition. The Young Carer Bursary Program aims to support young carers' education. This paper analysed data from consenting bursary applicants (2017–2019) to investigate relationships between wellbeing, educational attendance, home study and other factors. Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis determined significant issues, relationships and influential factors related to young carer (N = 1,443) wellbeing and education. Sixty‐eight percent were aged between 13 and 18 years and attended secondary school. One third of the sample reported that they were the main carer in their family and 29% reported receiving no support. Female applicants from single parent households who were the main carer attended educational settings less often. Eighteen percent (n = 267) rated their wellbeing as poor/very poor. Better wellbeing was associated with increased educational attendance (rs = 0.33, p < 0.001) and home study (rs = 0.34, p < 0.001). Wellbeing was associated with main carer status, caring for a parent, having a disability, being older and having few supports. Educational attendance was associated with main carer status, higher care load and fewer supports. Home study was associated with having a disability, caring for a sibling, caring for more than 11 hr per week and having fewer supports. Important factors about the age, life situation and challenges experienced by young carers identified in this paper indicate that further research into preferred supports and effectiveness of the bursary in improving educational engagement is warranted. Aims: Peat is used as a major ingredient of growing media in horticulture. Peat extracted from bogs can be acidic and low in nutrient availability and is therefore mixed with liming agents, nutrients, surfactants, perlite and so on. This study aims to estimate the rates at which raw peat and the modified peat (‘growing media’) decompose to release carbon dioxide (CO2), to estimate the release of carbon (C) from liming agents and to estimate how peat biogeochemistry is changed.We obtained 28 and 24 samples of raw peat and 24 growing media from four peat extraction companies in Canada. Growing media were treated with horticultural additives. [Display omitted] • Eocene lamprophyre magmatism is found in South Kalimantan, Borneo. • The lamprophyre has a Priabonian 40Ar/39Ar age of 37.45 ± 0.01 Ma, indistinguishable from the sediments into which it intrudes. • Present day South Kalimantan lithosphere is 50–75% thinner than what is expected for lamprophyre petrogenesis indicating substantial lithospheric thinning since the Priabonian. • Magmatic rocks with well characterised petrogenetic pathways, such as lamprophyres, can be used as paleo-lithospheric thickness indicators. The petrogenetic history of well characterised magmatic rocks may contain invaluable information of paleo-lithospheric thickness and structure that can inform on tectonic evolution. Petrographically distinctive rocks, such as lamprophyres, provide temporal and spatial constraints to build, assess, and verify tectonic models. An alkaline lamprophyre dyke that intrudes the rift-related sediments of the Eocene Tanjung Formation of the Senakin Peninsula in South Kalimantan, Indonesia has been investigated using petrology, whole rock geochemistry and Ar-Ar geochronology. The Senakin lamprophyre dyke is mostly geochemically homogenous but petrographically stratified with vesicle free monchiquite alkaline lamprophyre mineralogy at the base and an amygdale bearing kaersutite phenocryst free upper zone. The major and trace element chemistry is consistent with an intra-plate Ocean Island Basalt like affinity. 40Ar/39Ar dating of hornblende and groundmass aliquots indicates an emplacement age of 37.45 ± 0.10 Ma (2σ), which is consistent with the Late Eocene age of the Tanjung Formation derived from microfossil analysis. The petrology and geochemistry of the Senakin lamprophyre dyke is consistent with magma genesis at > 2GPa beneath a thick lithosphere followed by fractional crystallisation at Moho depths equivalent to 0.5–0.8 GPa. This indicates a much thicker southeastern Kalimantan paleo-lithosphere. Lamprophyre magmatism was initiated by lithospheric extension associated with the opening of the Makassar Strait and also regional thermal upwelling. Limited attention has been given to what motivates and informs children and young people's decision to participate (or not) in social research, especially about sensitive issues. This paper reports the findings from focus group interviews with children and young people aged 9–16 years, undertaken as part of a larger study that explored what constitutes a sensitive issue in social research and the factors considered when deciding to participate. Participants articulated a range of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations: benefiting others, getting something out of it, getting things 'off your chest' and the role of incentives and trusted adults. While similar to findings about medical research, the data from this study provides deeper insight into how children and young people make decisions to participate in social research. The critical role that accessible information plays in supporting children's considered decision-making is highlighted, along with rich insights into why research might matter for themselves and others. Domestic violence is a significant issue experienced by many children that can have a detrimental impact on their health, development, and well-being. This article reports on the findings of a meta-synthesis that examined the nature and extent of qualitative studies conducted with children about their experience of domestic violence. Studies were identified by a search of electronic databases and included gray literature. Studies were included for review if they were published between 1996 and 2016, were from countries considered as comparable Western nations to Australia and available in the English language, and reported on qualitative studies that directly engaged with children under the age of 18 years on their experiences of intimate partner violence involving one or more of their parents/carers. Forty peer-reviewed publications that reported on 32 studies were included for the review. This study was unique in that it included child participation measures to assess the quality of available studies. This article explores the contribution that research with children has made to our understandings of, and responses to, domestic violence, and provides a critique of the limitations and gaps evident in the extant qualitative research with children on the issue of domestic violence. The article considers implications for future research, policy, and practice and in particular focuses our attention on the need to engage more children more fully in participatory research in the field of domestic violence. The restoration and construction of wetlands offer opportunities to rewet soils, inhibit decomposition, and enhance nutrient retention in decomposing litters. Here, we report the decomposition rates and nutrient dynamics of macrophyte litters in intact, restored, and constructed wetlands. A 2.1‐year litterbag experiment of four common freshwater macrophytes (Phalaris arundinacea, Phragmites australis, Scirpus cyperinus, and Typha latifolia) was conducted in eight freshwater marshes (three intact, four restored, and one constructed) within three sites in Manitoba and Ontario, Canada, which varied in restoration age, inundation periods, and surrounding land uses. Litter mass loss and N and P dynamics were measured. Litter decomposition rates (k) followed the order of P. arundinacea (0.42 ± 0.03 year−1) > T. latifolia (0.31 ± 0.03 year−1) > P. australis (0.19 ± 0.01 year−1) > S. cyperinus (0.13 ± 0.01 year−1) in most wetlands and were positively correlated to the initial litter N concentration. Litters decomposed fastest under seasonally inundated conditions rather than permanent inundation. N and P retention in litters were significantly affected by both initial litter N and P concentration and wetland surrounding land uses. After 2.1 years of decomposition, the N:P ratio of all litters converged to 20 to 28:1, regardless of the initial litter N:P ratio or N or P concentrations. The effectiveness of wetland restoration in slowing decomposition and enhancing nutrient accumulation depends on the quality of the input litters and wetland characteristics, including inundated periods and surrounding anthropogenic disturbances. The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (the Royal Commission) examined child sexual abuse within a wide range of institutions that provide services to children, this included residential facilities. The current study (funded by the Royal Commission) considers young people's perception of safety in residential care; specifically, the current study attended to the voices of young people who spoke about sexual harassment and assault in qualitative interviews. Interviews were conducted with young people aged between 13 and 21 years who were or had recently been in residential care. Participants were asked for their perceptions of situations in a series of vignettes describing various levels and types of sexual assault and harassment. During these interviews, the young people in this study voluntarily reported known incidences of sexual assault and harassment in varying levels, perpetrated by workers, individuals outside of residential care, and peers within residential care. Sexual assault and harassment was discussed in heteronormative and gendered ways with young men seen as perpetrators and protectors, and young women seen as being vulnerable. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of drainage on peat properties, porewater chemistry, and peat decomposition proxies in an ombrogenous peatland in the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL). We anticipated that drainage would change peatland hydrology, vegetation, and biogeochemistry, leading to an increase in peat decomposition. As indicators of peat biogeochemical change and potential proxies for peat decomposition, we compared peat porewater chemistry and in situ nutrient availability of different microforms in a pristine ombrogenous bog, with a bog that has been subject to gradual lowering of the water table by 20 to 80 cm for approximately 7 years prior to, and during, our study. We also examined the chemical composition of peat and peat leachates (organic matter) from Sphagnum and lichen-covered hummocks at each site. Nutrient availability was greater in pools at the drained bog, indicating mineralisation of the dry and bare peat surface. However, our results did not show evidence of significant peat biogeochemical change or advanced decomposition in hummocks at the drained bog, with no difference in nutrient availabilities, peat porewater chemistry, or peat leachate chemistry at the drained and pristine bog. We also found no significant difference in enzyme activity (phenol oxidases) in hummocks at each site, proposed to be an important factor for C loss from peatland ecosystems in drier conditions. Overall, the effects of drainage on peat properties, porewater chemistry, and peat chemical composition at our sites were small and varied for different vegetation-microform types. Although decomposition in drained peatlands is likely constrained by cool temperatures in the HBL, our results suggest that ecohydrological feedbacks at the microform scale may also be important in slowing decomposition in these peatlands. International research has shown that young people in residential care experience challenges and are often exposed to risks that compromise their physical and emotional safety. In particular, the literature has begun to account for the interpersonal difficulties that children and young people have with their peers: concerns about bullying, harassment, peer sexual and physical violence and exploitation. This paper builds on this literature, drawing from a study for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse where 27 children and young people living in residential care discussed their experiences of safety. Although they reported abuse and harm (including exposure to peer violence and bullying and exploitation from outsiders) and how their peers' experiences affected their sense of safety, our study also uncovered ways that young people supported each other and provided them relationships that were protective. The implications for policy and practice, including the need to strengthen peer relationships and foster positive peer cultures are explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Syn-sedimentary mafic volcanism has been identified within a rift setting (Eocene Tanjung Formation) in the Senakin Peninsula, southeast Kalimantan. Fine-grained, dark-grey basalt lava occurs and has prominent vertically oriented columnar jointing. Petrographically, the basalt is composed of small euhedral pyroxene, olivine, and lath-shaped plagioclase phenocrysts within a very fine-grained dark coloured groundmass. A volcaniclastic unit also occurs and in outcrop has sharp contacts with underlying and overlying sedimentary mudstone. The unit is composed of cm-scale clasts of fine-grained to glassy textured basalt with vesicles of varying size and abundance. Euhedral pyroxene phenocrysts are observed within the clasts, although some with overprinting alteration. Palagonite alteration on the margins of some clasts is noted and is indicative of mafic composition volcanic material that has come into contact with sea water. Presence of bivalve and coral fragments in sandstone and mudstone underlying the volcaniclastic unit indicates emplacement into a marine environment. Core description from 33 locations over an 18 km transect length show that both the basalt and volcaniclastic sediments are extensive throughout the east Senakin area. Lithological relationships and compositional similarities between the basalt and volcaniclastic sediment suggest they are related and were contemporaneous with sedimentation within the Tanjung Formation. It is proposed that the basalt unit is designated the Tanah Rata Basalt Member of the Tanjung Formation. If a wider distribution occurs for the volcaniclastic unit it is proposed that it is termed the Gumbil Volcaniclastic Member of the Tanjung Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Domestic and family violence is a significant issue experienced by many children that can have severe detrimental impacts to their health, development, and well‐being. Despite the significance of this issue, it is only recently that children have been included in research that seeks to understand the impacts that domestic and family violence may have on their lives. This paper reports on the findings of a meta‐synthesis, which explored qualitative research about children's experiences of domestic and family violence. Thirty‐two studies, including from the United Kingdom, North America, and Australia were included for review. The meta‐synthesis found that children describe domestic violence as being a complex, isolating, and enduring experience that often results in disruption, losses, and challenges to their significant relationships. Children's common feelings of fear, worry, powerlessness, and sadness were also uncovered, in addition to the strategies they employed to try and facilitate the safety and emotional well‐being of themselves and their family. Children's wants and needs are also highlighted. The findings demonstrate that despite the increasing interest in children's experiences of domestic and family violence, qualitative research remains limited, with many gaps evident. We examined the concentration of nitrogen (N) and δ15N in vegetation and peat in the Mer Bleue bog, Ontario, Canada. Compared with other ecosystems, N concentration in bog plant foliage is low (generally < 1.2%), with more N stored belowground than in foliar tissues. The natural abundance of 15N varies by plant functional type, indicating different strategies for nutrient acquisition. δ15N values of evergreen shrubs and trees are lower (~− 5 to ~− 9‰) than sedges and herbs (~+ 1 to ~− 1‰), likely the result of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi, which retain 15N in fungal biomass, with preferential transfer of 14N to the host plant. Results suggest that N in Sphagnum moss capitula is derived from uptake of N from decomposing peat and litter, with δ15N values of − 8 to − 2‰, rather than from N2 fixation. Soil δ15N varies with depth, related to degree of decomposition and dominant plant species litter. Foliar N plays a critical role in influencing the rate of photosynthesis and CO2 exchange. Despite paucity of available inorganic N in the system, most bog plants (that is, evergreen shrubs) have adapted with conservative growth strategies. Owing to slow decomposition, N is stored in this system tightly bound with organic matter, with C:N ratios in deep peat ranging from 33:1 to 23:1 and small fluxes into, out of and within the system. An increase in N availability, through atmospheric N deposition or water table lowering, could jeopardize the C sink function of bogs by stimulating microbial decomposition of organic matter. In the long term, an increase in N cycling would shift plant community composition from Sphagnum and evergreen dominated to deciduous species, fundamentally altering bog ecosystem function. Abstract Peat accumulation makes nutrient-limited ombrotrophic bogs important carbon sinks, while enhanced atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition threatens this capacity. Here we show that the stoichiometry of peat and porewater, a control of plant growth and decomposition, has been altered in response to long-term N, phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilization at Mer Bleue ombrotrophic bog in eastern Ontario, Canada. In N-fertilized peat, receiving up to an additional 6.4 g N m−2 y−1 above ambient deposition, we found N significantly (p < 0.05) greater, P both significantly greater and smaller dependent on treatment concentration, calcium (Ca) and K concentrations significantly lower, relative to control plots. In NPK-fertilized peat, P was greater than control while Ca was significantly smaller. In the porewater of N- and NPK-fertilized peat, we observed significantly more ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic nitrogen, phosphate, and dissolved organic phosphorus than in the controls. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis demonstrated that fertilization in all treatments increased decomposition, as indicated by residual enrichment of refractory moieties such as aromatics, carboxylates, and lignin, albeit only in the uppermost depths. Changes in peat quality may, however, not only relate to advanced decomposition but also to changes in litter input, as predominant vascular vegetation in the fertilized plots shared several features in FTIR spectra with samples of uppermost peat layers. Our results demonstrate that the peat in this ombrotrophic bog has responded to long-term fertilization with loss of Sphagnum moss and its filter function, increased shrub cover and enhanced decomposition. Aims: Peatland porewaters frequently contain large concentrations of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), but small concentrations of inorganic N (NH4+ and NO3−). Our aim was to test whether peatland plants, with low tissue N concentrations (0.7 to 1.7%), have the ability to take up organic forms of N, specifically glycine.Methods: We applied dual-labeled (13C and 15N) glycine to two peatlands: an ombrotrophic bog in eastern Canada and a New Zealand restiad bog undergoing restoration. We compared the δ13C and δ15N values of control and treated above and below-ground plant tissues to establish whether the glycine had been taken up.Results: At the Canadian bog, the moss, shrub and sedge species treated with glycine showed significant increases in δ15N, above and below-ground, and there was evidence of a significant change in δ13C in shrub roots. At the New Zealand peatland, above- and below-ground tissues of the two restiad species and the roots of the sedge species showed significantly increased δ15N, while only the sedge roots showed a significant increase in δ13C.Conclusions: All but one of the nine plant species examined showed significant uptake of 15N in foliage and all roots showed increases in 15N. Variations in uptake appear to be partially related to the plant type and root characteristics. The fruticose lichens Cladina stellaris and Cladina rangiferina, form thick mats that can cover large areas of northern peatlands (above c. 50° latitude), including the extensive peatlands of the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL) in Canada, where lichens may cover up to 50% of the landscape. Despite the abundance of lichens in northern peatlands, our understanding of their role within peatland ecosystems, and peat accumulation in particular, is limited.We investigate the potential effect of these mat‐forming lichens on peat production and decomposition processes, using field data from an ombrogenous bog in the HBL and laboratory analyses. We hypothesize that (a) production in lichen‐shrub hummocks is less than in Sphagnum‐shrub hummocks; (b) the decay of lichen litter is faster than that of Sphagnum moss, so the mass litter input to the peat profile is reduced; and (c) faster decomposition of the underlying peat is stimulated by lichen leachates, resulting in greater mass loss.We found that thick lichen mats alter vegetation composition in peatlands, reducing Sphagnum cover and inhibiting the growth of small shrubs. Coupled with low lichen productivity that is constrained by moisture conditions, production for lichen‐shrub hummocks is significantly smaller than for Sphagnum‐shrub hummocks, confirming hypothesis (a). Our data also support hypothesis (b), with chemical analyses of lichen mats and leachates from lichen mats indicating faster decay of lichens compared to Sphagnum moss, and therefore reduced mass litter input to the peat profile in lichen‐dominated hummocks. Although we found no evidence to suggest leachates from lichens enhance decomposition processes in peatlands (hypothesis c), larger dry bulk densities for peat under lichen mats indicate a loss of structural integrity and potential collapse of the peat column.Synthesis. As production of new material added to the peat column is less in lichen‐dominated hummocks, local peat accumulation slows or ceases, representing a potential temporary limit to peat growth. Our results highlight the importance of lichens as a vegetation feedback in peatland development, with thick mats probably constraining or reducing hummock height relative to adjacent, lichen‐free hollows. Nutrient availability is an important control on the vegetation distribution, productivity and functioning of peatland ecosystems and we examined spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient availability through ion exchange at Mer Bleue bog, southeast Ontario, Canada. We installed ion exchange probes at 5–15 cm for 4 weeks and determined nutrient sorption at undisturbed sites as well as those affected by nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) fertilization and drainage. Under undisturbed conditions, the bog had very small amount of available nutrients, especially N (ammonium > nitrate) and P, and exhibited small variations in nutrient availability during the growing season (May to October). The increase in NPK availability upon fertilization was short-lived over the season and the stoichiometry of available NPK captured by the probes was mismatched with the vegetation. The increase in nutrient availability with drainage was confounded by substantial changes in vegetation. We compare these results with data from other Canadian bogs and fens to provide baseline data on nutrient availability in peatlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China produced 17.1 billion cubic meters (BCM) of methane sourced from coal seams in 2015, of which 4.43 BCM is from wells drilled from the surface. This level of production is a clear indicator that China has gone into early stage large-scale coalbed methane (CBM) development. CBM resources in China have been extensively investigated since the 1980s. Research has focused on the geological controls of reservoir character. There have been significant advances over the last 37 years that have aided China’s CBM industry. CBM resources less than 2000 m in depth in China are estimated to be 36.81 trillion cubic meters, of which more than 84% occur in nine large-scale basins, such as the Qinshui, Ordos, Junggar, Qianxi, Erenhot, and Hailar. CBM accumulation and coal reservoir characteristics are controlled by the deposition, structure, coal rank, hydrology as well as other geological factors. Each basin has its own unique geological controls that influence the character of CBM reservoirs in both subtle and obvious ways. Coal reservoir geology in some basins or regions in China are still not well understood because of the complexity of the geological settings. At present, large-scale CBM production in China only occurs within the Qinshui and Ordos basins, mostly sourced from middle-to-high rank coal reservoirs. The CBM geology in other basins needs further investigation in order to achieve large-scale commercial production. To this end, the geological research in the paper should address issues such as how to stimulate economic gas flow from deep low permeability reservoirs and how best to efficiently produce from multiple horizons simultaneously. Background and aims: We examined changes in soil organic matter arising from conversion of a 45-year old pasture to a 10 yr. old native tree plantation in Panamá, to evaluate the effect of monoculture and mixtures.Methods: We intensively sampled the soil 0-10 cm depth in the pasture in 2001 and in 22 plantation plots in 2011, ranging from 5 monocultures to 3- and 6-species treatments; samples were also taken from an undisturbed forest site. Soil analyses included organic carbon (SOC) and δ13C.Results: Conversion of the pasture to tree plantation resulted in an overall loss of SOC of 0.6 kg m−2 (18%) in the top 10 cm, but neither tree species nor diversity had a significant effect. End-member δ13C values suggested that the contribution of C3 plants to SOC was increased from 26% in the pasture to 55% after 10 years of plantation and SOC turnover times were calculated to be 21-36 yr.Conclusions: The magnitude of the loss in soil SOC is smaller than the increases in tree biomass (~3 kg C m−2) and litter (~0.3 kg C m−2) in the plantation, but still a significant part of the ecosystem C balance. Informed consent is critical in research with children. Although much has been written about the need to see consent as an ongoing process, less has considered how to do it in practice. This article reflects on the authors’ experiences of conducting a piece of research focusing on children’s experiences of safety from abuse within institutional contexts. It draws on feedback provided by participants and the guidance of three Children’s Reference Groups. The importance of presenting information in accessible and appropriate ways, of providing opportunities for participants to negotiate their participation and for in-the-moment challenges be dealt with collaboratively and reflexively are stressed. Both historical and contemporary residential care for children have been found to present risks to their safety and security. Views about the characteristics of workers that helped them to feel safe in the placement were obtained from 27 children and young people who were placed in residential care in Australia. Competent and trustworthy staff were considered essential. These workers were characterised as caring, proactive, tenacious in building relationships, and available. Importantly, they listened and ensured young people had a voice. The study affirms the central role of the worker-client alliance in ensuring residential care is a positive and safe experience for children and young people, and identifies structural factors that children and young people believe are barriers to them feeling safe. The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has set in motion a number of systemic and organizational approaches to identify and respond to child sexual abuse. These include increased child abuse awareness, developing and enhancing child-safe organizational cultures and policies and more thorough screening and supervision of staff in child and youth serving organizations. Although these advances should be applauded, many of the concerns that children and young people have raised about interpersonal safety have not been fully addressed. There is therefore a risk that children’s physical, relational, generational, and organizational powerlessness are reinforced through child-safe practices that restrict their meaningful participation, ignore their agency and capacity and fail to respond to their felt safety needs or wishes. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative research project conducted with 121 Australian children and young people and presents their perspectives on issues of vulnerability and the ways that they would like adults and institutions to respond to their safety concerns. The value of adult-child alliances, of formal mechanisms that are child-friendly and accessible and having external agencies monitor and review institutional strategies to preventing harm are discussed. Young people who live in residential care are at greater risk of experiencing sexual abuse and other forms of abuse than those living in other out of home care placements. To better understand how young people perceive and experience safety in residential care, and the things that they most need to be and feel safe, a qualitative study was conducted with 27 Australian children and young people for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. This paper describes young people's perspectives on what makes residential care safe: supportive relationships, stability and predictability, fair rules, and having some control over their environment. Young people said that safety could be improved with: better appreciation of the risks in residential care; better matching, staffing and oversight; and better-designed responses that involve young people themselves. The findings provide critical insights from young people themselves and argue that adults and institutions need to appreciate their views of safety so as to adequately respond. Determining the plant traits that best predict carbon (C) storage is increasingly important as global change drivers will affect plant species composition and ecosystem C cycling. Despite the critical role of peatlands in the global C cycle, trait-flux relationships in peatlands are relatively unknown., We assessed the ability of four non-destructive plant traits to predict carbon dioxide ( CO2) and methane ( CH4) fluxes over two growing seasons in a temperate peatland in Ontario, Canada. We examined relationships between C-fluxes and leaf area, leaf persistence (deciduous, evergreen), growth form (woody, herbaceous) and aerenchyma tissue. To explore potential inconsistencies between different scales of data aggregation, traits were analysed at the level of plots, species and microsites., CO2 fluxes showed a positive relationship with leaf area and leaf persistence, and a negative relationship with proportion of woody species. CH4 fluxes showed a positive relationship with aerenchyma and leaf area. The significance of trait-flux relationships differed based on whether data were averaged at the level of plot, species or microsite., We recommend applying leaf area as a non-destructive trait to other systems where it is not ideal to measure traits destructively. A better understanding of the relationships between above and below-ground traits is likely needed to further explain variation in ecosystem respiration and CH4 fluxes from plant traits., A is available for this article. • Parenting aspirations of young people who have experienced adversity are overlooked. • Young people would like to be parents but had other goals to achieve first. • Goals included addressing enjoying their youth, addressing personal difficulties. • Aspirations were influence by childhood experiences and current circumstances. Only a limited number of studies have sought to examine the parenting attitudes and aspirations of young people who have experienced abuse, neglect, and childhood adversity and who are not yet pregnant or parenting. Given the dearth of literature on this topic, this study explores the attitudes and aspirations relating to pregnancy and parenthood among South Australian young people who have experienced abuse, neglect, or childhood adversity. A total of fifteen young people (8 male and 7 female) were recruited from a variety of services that may be serving young people with experiences of abuse, neglect, or early adversity. Young people took part in a semi-structured interview exploring their attitudes and aspirations regarding relationships, pregnancy, and parenthood. Young people discussed whether they would like to be parents, and some of the goals and aspirations that they would like to achieve beforehand. The reasons why young people wanted to be parents later in life and achieve these goals first were categories into three interrelated groups: they wanted to enjoy their youth and succeed in education or employment, they wanted to address their own personal difficulties and challenges first or they wanted to be prepared and be in the best position possible to meet the needs of their future children. While most of the sample were not planning on becoming parents before they turned 25, all aspired to have children at some point. Young people's aspirations towards younger parenthood were varied and often shaped by their childhood experiences and current circumstances. Implications for policy and practice are discussed. Purpose: The perspectives of children and young people with disability who experience domestic and family violence are under-researched, impeding the development of approaches that meet their needs. Knowledge gaps stem from the layered discursive positioning of disability, childhood/youth, or domestic and family violence in addition to the methodological, ethical and pragmatic complexity of research needed to understand their priorities and be attuned to their lived experience. This article explores methodological, ethical and practical challenges to centring their voices in research about domestic and family violence. Method: A conceptual framework of feminist disability theory and intersectionality informed our co-designed research, across three phases: (1) quantitative large-scale data linkage and case file analysis; (2) qualitative research with children and young people, their families and service providers and (3) stakeholder engagement workshops. Results: We reflect on how our research was able to prioritise the contextual agency of children and young people with disability, ways it could not, and other constraints. Conclusion: Children and young people with disability experiencing domestic and family violence hold an expert and unique vantage point on what happens to them. Amplifying their priorities for directing policy and organisational change requires more of researchers in terms of methods, but also more flexibility in how projects are funded to enable creativity and innovation. We call for collective attention to frameworks for supported decision-making and child ethics to progress inclusive research which recognises the importance of participation for children and young people with disability. Background and aims: The litter-bag technique has become common in the estimation of the rates of decomposition, but in many cases the bags are incubated for only a short period, raising the issue of the extent to which short-term incubations represent long-term litter decomposition. We addressed this using 12 years of data from the CIDET study. Methods: The CIDET study involved placement of 10 foliar litters on the soil surface and wood blocks on the soil surface and buried across temperate to subarctic Canada. Bags were retrieved 10 times over 12 years at 19 sites and the residual litter mass determined. Results: A literature search revealed that 84% of published litter-bag studies in temperate-boreal-subarctic regions were of 3 years duration or less. The strength of the relationship between the mass loss after 1 year and later years at each CIDET site, expressed as the coefficient of determination ( R ) among the 12 litters, decreased with length of incubation, reaching an average of only 0.4 after 12 years. The R value was inversely related to mean annual temperature. The single exponential model of mass remaining ( k) declined with length of incubation, and the rate of decline varied among litter types and sites. For 3 litters at 19 sites, the 3- and 12-year k values were strongly related. Conclusions: These results show that caution should be exercised when extrapolating short-term litter-bag studies (e.g. < 3 years), particularly in temperate climates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2012, the Australian Government announced the establishment of a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The aim of the Royal Commission is to understand how and why sexual abuse occurred within Australian institutions and to provide guidance as to how future abuse might be prevented. The Royal Commission commissioned a mixed methods study to explore what children need to be safe and to feel safe, to explore how they determine their level of safety, and their observations about how institutions act to prevent and respond to safety issues. This article reports on the findings from the first phase of the study that involved focus groups carried out with children aged 4-17 years from different types of institutions. The discussion focused particularly on how children conceptualise safety and how they make judgments about their levels of safety. Children and young people's conceptualisation of safety had multiple dimensions, which include the idea that being safe and feeling safe are two distinct, interrelated but sometimes non-concurrent experiences; that safety is identified and experienced as a set of feelings; trusting relationships are the foundation of safety; familiarity helps children feel safe; and safe environments are those that are ordered and orderly. We assess the importance of publisher conduct and journal quality in determining the price and cost-effectiveness of journals in geography. Drawing on a database of 136 journals in which geographers publish, we examine the price of journals, publishers' market share, the determinants of journal prices, and the cost-effectiveness of journals. We find that commercial presses charge 2.3 times more for journals than society and university presses and 50 percent more for journals published on behalf of universities and societies. Journals in physical geography are almost twice as expensive as those in human geography and 43 percent of them can be considered “overpriced.” Four commercial presses hold 72 percent of the titles and 93 percent of the value of subscriptions, enabling them to exercise oligopolistic market power over pricing. Our multivariate analysis shows that the price of journals, of articles, and of citations in geography is driven by publisher conduct rather than journal quality as measured by citations accrued to articles. Geographers can further the transition underway in scientific publishing by self-archiving their published work, disseminating their findings through social networks, and paying closer attention to journal cost-effectiveness in choosing where to publish and review. Recent developments in higher education have seen a strong emphasis placed on making graduates ‘job ready’ for their work in the professions. A driver of this agenda has been the many mass-scale surveys conducted with business and industry about the abilities and general employability of graduates. This Australian-based study is focused on perceptions and attitudes around one such ability – professional writing skills. ‘Discourse-based interviews' were conducted with managers and supervisors from a range of professional areas. Their responses were most interesting, and served, among other things, to challenge some of the emerging ideas about ‘job readiness’ in current debates about the directions of higher education. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays a key role in the peatland carbon balance and serves numerous ecological and chemical functions including acting as a microbial substrate. In this study, we quantify the concentration, biodegradability, and intrinsic properties of DOC obtained from peat, fresh material, and litter from nine species of ombrotrophic bog vegetation. Potential biodegradability was assessed by incubating vegetation extracts for 28 days in the dark and measuring percent DOC loss as the fraction of biodegradable DOC (%BDOC) while DOC properties were characterized using UV-Vis absorbance and fluorescence measurements. The mean initial DOC concentration extracted differed significantly among species ( P < 0.05) and was significantly higher in fresh material, 217 ± 259 mg DOC l, than either litter or peat extracts with mean concentrations of 82.1 ± 117 mg DOC l and 12.7 ± 1.0 mg DOC l, respectively ( P < 0.05). %BDOC also differed significantly among species ( P < 0.05) and ranged from 52 to 73% in fresh cuttings with the greatest fraction observed in S. magellanicum; 22-46% in litter; and 24% in peat. The majority of variability (82.5%) in BDOC was explained by initial absorbance at 254 nm and total dissolved nitrogen concentration which was further resolved into significant non-linear relationships between %BDOC and both humic-like and protein-like DOC fractions ( P < 0.05). Our results highlight the extremely heterogeneous nature of the surface vegetation-derived DOC input in peatlands and stress the importance of vegetation species in peatland ecosystem function. Southeast Asia is replete with Cenozoic sedimentary coal-bearing basins. These basins can be grouped into five regions: northern Sundaland, southern Sundaland, the Philippine archipelago, western Myanmar and eastern Indonesia. Only the first three are discussed in this paper. Each of the three areas has unique coal basin properties as a result of differing tectonic, palaeogeographic, palaeoclimatic and depositional histories. The most significant coal deposits of SE Asia formed in large sedimentary basins within the Neogene in southern Sundaland (the islands of Borneo and Sumatra) over extensive coastal plains, in a regressive setting, and multiple seams of > 5 m thickness are widespread. Locally much thicker seams have developed. Typically, the coal deposits have low ash yield and sulphur contents. In contrast the interior coal deposits of northern Sundaland formed within small disconnected grabens and half grabens, with continental fill, and were not influenced by marine base level changes. The coal deposits are areally restricted. Coal thickness is variable, with one or two main seams, up to 6 to 20 m when well developed, but there are locally much thicker coal-dominated stratigraphic intervals. The ash yields are usually moderate to high and sulphur contents are variable, often high. Coal within the basins of the Philippine archipelago typically has similar coal quality to the coal deposits of southern Sundaland with variable coal rank but the deposits are not extensive, being limited by basin size and structural complexity. Southern Sundaland has had the least change palaeogeographically, residing mainly within ± 10° of the equator. Its palaeoclimate has remained conducive to ever-wet conditions, the climate most favourable for peat formation, throughout the Cenozoic. Northern Sundaland (i.e. SE Asian continental) has consistently resided > 10° north of the equator throughout all of the Cenozoic. The palaeoclimate was therefore tropical but probably monsoonal with significant annual dry periods. These conditions are not the most conducive to peat formation. In contrast to the Sundaland basins, the Philippine archipelago had less tectonic stability and has a complex palaeogeographic history with some regions passing through equatorial areas (and climates) while others were always north of the equator. The tectonic and depositional histories of the three regions are unique and contributed to the character of the resultant coal. Basins in northern Sundaland were most affected by the collision of India with the Asian continent during the Palaeogene. Syn -rift basins formed within continental crust resulting in small, mainly disconnected basins which were filled with coarse but generally fining up sequences containing coal seams and sediments of freshwater lacustrine and fluvial origin. The basins did not develop beyond the syn -rift phase, being constrained by the intra-continental setting and probably the stresses from the India-Eurasia collision. The southern margin of Sundaland also was affected by Palaeogene extension resulting in the development of small syn -rift basins containing a similar initial sequence to northern Sundaland. However, after the initial rifting much larger wider basins formed. This probably reflects major differences in the fundamental crustal architecture and lithosphere between northern and southern Sundaland. The initial syn -rift (and early post-rift) rock units were eventually transgressed by marine sediments. Later basin inversion and mountain uplift in the hinterland provided a sediment source for the deposition of widespread fluvial-deltaic and coastal plain sediments. Areally extensive peat mires then formed, within a regressive sedimentary sequence. The tectonic development of the Philippine archipelago is extremely complex. The archipelago is composed of modern and ancient island arcs and merged continental fragments. Various rifting and amalgamation of micro continental fragments had resulted in a plethora of small coal-bearing basins most of which are dissected and structurally disturbed. Southern Sundaland (i.e. the islands of Sumatra and Borneo) has the most extensive coal deposits in SE Asia. During the Cenozoic the region had the right sequence of tectonic events, palaeogeography, and palaeoclimate. Laterally extensive coal seams developed during the Eocene in southeast and central Kalimantan (Borneo) in an early post-rift setting under conditions of relative marine transgression. By the Middle Miocene the basins of southern Sundaland were experiencing a depositional setting with palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic conditions that were conducive for the development of widespread and thick ombrogenous peat mires, which resulted in the formation of vitrinite-rich coals with low ash yields and low sulphur contents. The combination of large basins that quickly infilled to base level, an ever-wet climate, and a depositional setting where peat mires could form and be preserved resulted in the formation of areally extensive and thick coal deposits from the Middle Miocene through to the Pliocene. Although there are locally significant coal deposits in northern Sundaland, the depositional setting was within small continental-fill syn -rift grabens, many with a lacustrine environment, in a seasonally drier palaeoclimate than southern Sundaland. Development of peat mires was not areally extensive, and the coal seams have higher ash yields and sulphur contents, and a locally higher content of liptinite macerals. Coal deposits in the Philippine archipelago developed under broadly similar palaeoclimates to southern Sundaland, with a similar range of coal qualities. Ombrotrophic bogs are nutrient-poor systems and important carbon (C) sinks yet there remains a dearth of information on the belowground stoichiometry of C, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), important determinants of substrate quality for microorganisms, in these systems. In this study, we quantified the C, N, P, and K concentrations of both hummock peat and dissolved matter as well as microbial extracellular enzyme activity from 0 to 10 cm depth in the long-term NPK fertilization plots at Mer Bleue bog. Greater N-loading resulted in significantly reduced C:N and greater C:P and C:K ( p < 0.05) while the addition of NPK resulted in significantly lower C:P and C:K ( p < 0.05) and lower C:N relative to N-only treatments but the difference in C:N was not significant ( p > 0.05). Hydrolase enzyme activity followed resource allocation models with significantly suppressed N-acetyl- β- d-glucosaminidase and phosphatase activity ( p < 0.05) and enhanced β- d-glucosidase activity with greater N- and P-availability. The concentration of inhibitory phenolics was significantly greater with N-loading ( p < 0.05), due in part to shifts in surface vegetation, while phenol oxidase activity was significantly suppressed by N ( p < 0.05) with results suggesting greater suppression by NH than NO . Taken together, these results suggest that higher levels of nutrients impact both microbial substrate quality as well as the activity of microbial enzymes that are key to the decomposition process that may ultimately decrease carbon sequestration in bogs. The large accumulation of carbon in peatlands arises from slow organic matter decomposition where microorganisms and their enzyme activities play a critical role. However, there is a dearth of studies on the natural patterns of peatland microbial enzyme activity and inhibitory phenolic compounds over seasons, and across a range of depths and biogeochemically different peatland types. We report the spatiotemporal patterns for phenol oxidases, phenolics, and a suite of five key hydrolase enzymes at two depths in two ombrotrophic bogs, mineral poor and rich fens, and a forested basin swamp over the growing season. Results obtained using linear fixed and mixed effect models suggest that phenol oxidase activity varies significantly with temperature and, to a lesser extent pH, leading to a breakdown of inhibitory phenolics and increased hydrolase enzyme activity across all peatland types. Overall, enzyme activity decreased significantly with depth and showed significant variation over the course of the growing season with a minimum in the spring and a maximum in the summer and fall. Enzyme activities were generally greatest in the rich fen and lowest in the forested basin swamp with no significant difference between bogs and poor fens. Site-specific factors such as nutrient availability explain deviations from these patterns. Our results illustrate the widespread but conditional applicability of the enzyme-latch mechanism to peatlands and the vulnerability of the peatland soil organic carbon stock to climate warming. Stratified sampling of coal beds for petrographic analysis using block samples is a viable alternative to standard methods of channel sampling and particulate pellet mounts. Although petrographic analysis of particulate pellets is employed widely, it is both time consuming and does not allow variation within sampling units to be assessed - an important measure in any study whether it be for paleoenvironmental reconstruction or in obtaining estimates of industrial attributes. Also, samples taken as intact blocks provide additional information, such as texture and botanical affinity that cannot be gained using particulate pellets. Analysis of variance tests (ANOVA) on stratified samples from an Eocene coal bed in Kalimantan, Indonesia showed that the largest amount of microscopic variation occurs between coal types indicating they are petrographically dissimilar. The ANOVA tests also indicated that only a maximum of 125 point counts are needed to make precise estimates of block composition. Confidence limits of estimates from stratified sampling were calculated to be comparable to what would have been obtained using standard crushed particulate pellets. This means less work is needed for the same accuracy of estimates using a stratified sampling method over that of crushed particulate pellets for coal beds. Macroscopic point counting of vitrain bands can accurately account for those particles >1 mm within a coal interval. This point counting method is conducted using something as simple as string on a coal face with marked intervals greater than the largest particle expected to be encountered (although new technologies are being developed to capture this type of information digitally). Comparative analyses of particulate pellets and blocks on the same interval show less than 6% variation between the two sample types when blocks are recalculated to include macroscopic counts of vitrain. The use of reference groups made up of members of the population being researched has been encouraged within the qualitative research literature. This paper describes the use of reference groups made up of children and young people and promotes them as a space within which co-reflexive activities can help researchers reconsider their research approaches and assumptions, their methodologies and methods and the new knowledge created. To examine where Canadian geographers publish their research, we used data on article publication compiled from the annual Directory of the Canadian Association of Geographers for 1981-82, 1991-92, 2001-02, and 2011-12. We find a very wide range of journals (1238) is used, but many of them are rarely used. Papers published from 1981 to 2012 increased 3.7-fold with a similar increase in the number of journals used. Commercial presses have come to dominate publishing, society presses and university presses are fewer today but open access journals have become more common. Only about one quarter of the journals used have a Thompson Reuter Impact Factor (IF) but the median IF of IF-rated journals used rose from 1.56 (1981-82) to 2.23 (2011-12). The Canadian Geographer is the most frequently used journal, but over time flagship geography journals have been replaced by interdisciplinary and thematic journals. Papers published per faculty rose from an average of 0.5 yr−1 in 1981-82 to 1.7 yr−1 in 2011-12, with a large variation in publication rates per faculty across departments, reflecting the research versus teaching focus. Canadian geographers are publishing well beyond the field, engaging with much larger audiences, and reaching top journals, to the benefit of the discipline. Previous studies have shown that atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is detrimental to sphagna, which are a group of mosses that are important for carbon cycling in northern peatlands. Little is known about species interactions, such as relative responses of tall moss Polytrichum strictum Menzies ex Brid. and sphagna. We studied the effects of N deposition on growth, abundance, and CO2 exchange of the moss species Sphagnum capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw. and Polytrichum strictum in an experiment at a temperate bog. Sphagnum growth and cover decreased significantly with high-dose N treatment (6.4 g N·m−2·year−1) in years 4 and 5 of treatment, whereas the same parameters increased for Polytrichum compared with the control. Net CO2 exchange, gross photosynthesis ( Pg), and dark respiration ( R) in the intact moss cores, which were measured in year 5 of treatment, were elevated in the cores that had been treated with the high-dose of N, compared with the control, and this was associated with increased abundance of Polytrichum. The moss cores where Polytrichum was removed, however, had increased mass-based R with the high-dose N treatment. Our results showed that S. capillifolium at Mer Bleue may be close to N saturation, as 5 years of high-dose N loading (6.4 g N·m−2·year−1 + background) was harmful to this species, possibly as a result of increased respiratory cost. Polytrichum strictum had a competitive advantage, at least in the short-term, through allocating excess N to growth. This change in moss layer composition deserves further attention, as a shift to more easily decomposable litter, without corresponding increases in plant production, could reduce the carbon sequestration of the bog. Petrographic, geochemical and carbon isotopic determinations were conducted on five samples from four seams within the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene of the Guaduas Formation in Colombia. The individual coal seams are thin, ranging from 0.59 to 1.2 m, and occur over a 157 m interval. The average weighted ash yield is 13.7% (dry basis), although one sample presented values >35%. Vitrinite reflectance increases from 1.33% in the stratigraphically uppermost seam (La Cuarta) to 1.44% in the lower most coal seam (Cisquera), indicating their rank to be medium volatile bituminous. The studied sequence of the Guaduas Formation represents a peat environment influenced by shifting depositional settings, particularly in relation to the proximity of marine/brackish water environments as indicated by Sr/Ba values, sulfur, pyrite, δ 13C and the proportion of telinite. A decrease in inertinite indicates that the peat mires were becoming relatively 'wetter' stratigraphically upwards. This trend, unlike that of Sr/Ba and telinite, may be driven by climatic shifts rather than only changes in depositional environment. Both trace and rare earth elements, plus yttrium (REY) are related to the inorganic fraction of the coal. All rare earth elements are depleted relative to average worldwide hard coals (for trace elements) and average upper continental crust (for REY) with the notable exception of Li and Sb for the high ash yield sample (the La Cuarta lower coal seam). The abundance of some REY elements (i.e. Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) may be more influenced by the presence of illite rather than just the quantity of total ash yield. Based on the relationship between SiO 2 and Nb/Y, the provenance of the inorganics changed from a rhyolitic source at the lowest seam (Cisquera) to a dacite source in the middle layer (El Tesoro) to an andesite source in the stratigraphically uppermost seams (La Gemela and La Cuarta). The link between early school leaving and criminal behaviour has been well established within the literature. However, little is known about how young people understand and experience difficulties at school, reflect on their problem behaviours and ways that the broad welfare and education systems might better support them. This article reports on a qualitative research project conducted with young people engaged in the youth justice system in the Australian Capital Territory, in which participants reflected on their lives and the factors that led to their early school leaving and criminality. The Balikpapan Formation (Miocene age) in Sangatta, East Kalimantan is thick (> 1500 m) containing abundant coal seams that range in thickness from less than a meter to over 5 m. Coal seams are distributed throughout the section and may represent 5 to 7% of the total formation thickness. Measured gas contents range from < 1 to 13 m 3 /t (as received basis). The variation is both stratigraphically and geographically controlled. In samples from three drill cores, trends of vitrinite reflectance, calorific value, and moisture content indicate that rank increases down hole. Measured gas content also increases down hole in each core locations. However the rate of change down hole for all of those parameters increases with proximity to the southwestern corner of a geological feature known locally as the Pinang Dome. The Sangatta area has a higher geothermal gradient (50 °C/km) than most other parts of East Kalimantan (25–40 °C/km). It is well documented that the southwest part of the Pinang Dome has elevated organic maturation levels. It is concluded that there is higher heat flow in this area and thus coal beds in proximity have been thermally altered. This is evident not just in the increased rank and measured gas contents but also in the higher CO 2 and C2 + gas composition found adjacent to the southwest corner of the Pinang Dome. It is hypothesized that the gas origin in the higher rank area could be thermogenic while gas isotopes from the well furthest from the Pinang Dome, with the lowest rank coals, indicate biogenic origins. Ombrotrophic bog peatlands are nutrient-deficient systems and important carbon (C) sinks yet the stoichiometry of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), essential for plant growth and decomposition, has rarely been studied. We investigated the seasonal variation in C, N, P, and K concentrations and their stoichiometric ratios in photosynthetically active tissues of 14 species belonging to five plant functional types (PFTs) (mosses, deciduous trees/shrubs, evergreen shrubs, graminoids, and forb) at Mer Bleue bog, an ombrotrophic peatland in eastern Ontario, Canada. Although we observed variations in stoichiometry among PFTs at peak growing season, there was convergence of C:N:P:K to an average mass ratio of 445:14:1:9, indicating N and P co-limitation. Nitrogen, P, and K concentrations and stoichiometric ratios showed little seasonal variation in mosses, evergreens, and graminoids, but in forb and deciduous species were the largest in spring and decreased throughout the growing season. Variations in nutrient concentrations and stoichiometric ratios among PFTs were greater than seasonal variation within PFTs. Plants exhibit N and P co-limitation and adapt to extremely low nutrient availability by maintaining small nutrient concentrations in photosynthetically active tissues, especially for evergreen shrubs and Sphagnum mosses. Despite strong seasonal variations in nutrient availabilities, few species show strong seasonal variation in nutrient concentrations, suggesting a strong stoichiometric homeostasis at Mer Bleue bog. A 5-year litterbag study examined decomposition rates at four sites representing restiad peatland succession in Waikato, New Zealand. Early successional sites were dominated by Baumea rubiginosa, or Leptospermum scoparium, mid-successional by Empodisma robustum, and late successional by Sporadanthus ferrugineus. Leaf/culm materials from these species were placed on the surface, and roots of Empodisma and Sporadanthus buried at depths of 5, 25, and 55 cm to test the influence of succession on species and site decomposition rates. Typha latifolia leaves from a Canadian bog were placed at the surface and three depths to allow comparisons with northern peatlands. Litterbags were retrieved after 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years, and mass remaining characterized by an exponential model k value. Surface litter k values (0.12-0.80 y) decreased from early to late successional species; however, decomposition was slower at more waterlogged early successional sites. Buried litter k values (0.04-0.24 y) decreased with depth and increased from early to late successional sites, with Empodisma roots having the slowest rates. Few strong relationships existed between litter quality and decomposition rates. In contrast, water table regime strongly influenced decomposition rates; k values for the 'standard' Typha litter decreased exponentially as period of saturation increased, irrespective of site successional status, nutrients, or other factors. Lower water tables in the more aerated later successional sites have led to faster decomposition rates. Ongoing drainage combined with the potential impacts of climate change may increase organic matter decomposition and accelerate carbon release into the atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young people who transition from youth detention to the community may encounter difficulties related to their family relationships, mental and physical wellbeing, education, and employment. How to best to support young people once they leave youth detention has been left relatively unexplored-particularly in regard to the way that young people are approached and assisted to access support. This paper reports on an 18-month qualitative study carried out in Canberra, Australia, with a group of young people who had been in juvenile detention. Hearing from young people directly, the paper reports on what these young people said they needed to make positive changes and effectively transition back into the outside world. The young people who participated in this study recognised that they require assistance to sustain and develop relationships; to maintain links with critical institutions such as work, school, and informal support; to resolve the effects of detention; and to access support to live successfully in the community. A common problem faced by geography departments, particularly during times of fiscal compression and mounting pressure for accountability, is how to compare themselves and their faculty with others. The recent revolution in bibliometrics provides a growing volume of data that can be used in benchmarking exercises. In this article, we assess the production and citation of journal articles and books by tenure-track and tenured faculty in selected U.S. and Canadian geography departments (n = 17) according to a set of readily derived and transparent performance indicators derived from publicly available data. Scopus was used to assess article production and citation; Google Scholar was used for book citation. Results point to significant heterogeneity in department characteristics, productivity, and citation of published work. The number of publications, citations, and h-Index scores among scholars in the sample (n = 369) is related strongly to academic age and subfield of enquiry (i.e., physical or human geography) but not—despite apparently marked differences in output and citations—to gender. The article reports a study that investigated ideas about critical thinking as held by academics working in three disciplines: history, philosophy and cultural studies. At least seven definitional strands were identified in the informants’ commentaries, namely critical thinking: (i) as judgement; (ii) as skepticism; (iii) as a simple originality; (iv) as sensitive readings; (v) as rationality; (vi) as an activist engagement with knowledge; and (vii) as self-reflexivity. This multiplicity of meanings is thought to have important implications for university teaching and learning. Uncertainty in emission inventories remains a critical limitation of air quality modeling and management. Using eddy covariance, we measured surface-atmosphere exchange fluxes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the neighborhood scale at 13 sites in the Norfolk, Virginia area to estimate emissions, to evaluate official inventories, and to quantify relationships between emissions and land use. Average daytime fluxes ranged from 0.4 μg m-2 s-1 at a site near open water to 9.5 μg m-2 s-1 at a site dominated by vehicle traffic. NOx fluxes were correlated with both road density and medium-plus high-intensity development, confirming that both motor vehicles and sources associated with development are responsible for NOx emissions in urban areas. Spatially averaged NOx fluxes measured by eddy covariance agreed to within 3% with the National Emission Inventory (NEI) but were 2.8 times higher than those in the corresponding grid cell of an emission inventory developed for air quality modeling. These average fluxes were 4.6, 4.5, and 1.7 μg m-2 s-1, respectively. Uncertainty in the inventories appears to be dominated by the nonroad mobile source category. It is especially important to know NOx emissions accurately because in certain photochemical regimes, reducing NOx emissions can exacerbate secondary pollutant formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The commercial extraction of methane from coal beds is now well established in a number of countries throughout the world, including the USA, Australia, China, India and Canada. Because coal is almost pure carbon, its reservoir character is fundamentally different to conventional gas plays. Coalbed methane (CBM) forms as either biogenically- or thermogenically-derived gas. The former occurs in ‘under mature’ (<0.5% vitrinite reflectance) coals and is the result of bacterial conversion of coal into CO2 or acetate, which is then transformed by archaea into CH4. Thermogenic gas is formed as part of the coalification process and is purely a chemical devolatilization that releases CH4. Methane is primarily stored in coal through adsorption onto the coal surface; thus it is pore surface area that determines the maximum gas holding potential of a reservoir (as opposed to pore volume in a conventional reservoir). Although macro-, meso-, and micropores are present in the coal matrix, it is thought that the micropores are where most methane adsorption occurs. In many of the micropores, the methane molecule may actually stretch, minutely, the pore and thus with de-gassing of the reservoir, could result in matrix shrinkage, allowing opening of the fracture (cleat) system in the coal and thus enhancing permeability. The organic composition of the coal is paramount in determining porosity and permeability character and thus maximum gas holding capacity. In general, the higher the vitrinite content the higher the gas holding potential (and ultimately the amount of desorbed gas) and permeability (all other factors being the same). There are other organic component/gas property relationships but these seem to be specific to individual basins, or even seams. Characterising a CBM reservoir during an exploration programme is a challenge but the two most vital measures to determine are permeability and % gas saturation. Permeability will largely determine gas (and water) flow rate, dictating how commercial a prospect might be. Gas saturation, determined from desorption and adsorption measurements, also influences gas rate and the ultimate recoverability of gas from a reservoir. Modelling of gas flow from the reservoir is highly dependent on knowledge of these parameters. Certification of resources and reserves, which is also very important to CBM companies as they explore and develop their permits, depends heavily on accurate estimates of reservoir character; primarily seam continuity, % gas saturation and permeability. Children who experience homelessness are at risk of poor health and well-being, and negative social outcomes. They are often exposed to stressful life events, such as domestic violence, parental mental health difficulties and family breakdown. Although many experience difficulties in remaining engaged in school, children report that schools can provide them with a sense of belonging and can help them and their families to link with supports to assist them through their homeless experience. This article reports on a study with children who had experienced homelessness with their families and discusses their thoughts on homelessness and school. The Mer Bleue peatland is a large ombrotrophic bog with hummock-lawn microtopography, poor fen sections and beaver ponds at the margin. Average growing-season (May-October) fluxes of methane (CH) measured in 2002-2003 across the bog ranged from less than 5 mg m d in hummocks, to greater than 100 mg m d in lawns and ponds. The average position of the water table explained about half of the variation in the season average CH fluxes, similar to that observed in many other peatlands in Canada and elsewhere. The flux varied most when the water table position ranged between −15 and −40 cm. To better establish the factors that influence this variability, we measured CH flux at approximately weekly intervals from May to November for 5 years (2004-2008) at 12 collars representing the water table and vegetation variations typical of the peatland. Over the snow-free season, peat temperature is the dominant correlate and the difference among the collars' seasonal average CH flux is partially dependent on water table position. A third important correlate on CH flux is vegetation, particularly the presence of Eriophorum vaginatum, which increases CH flux, as well as differences in the potential of the peat profile to produce and consume CH under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The combination of peat temperature and water table position with vegetation cover was able to explain approximately 44% of the variation in daily CH flux, based on 1097 individual measurements. There was considerable inter-annual variation in fluxes, associated with varying peat thermal and water table regimes in response to variations in weather, but also by variations in the water level in peripheral ponds, associated with beaver dam activity.
