10. Establishment and characterization of two novel patient-derived lines from canine high-grade glioma.

Abstract

High-grade glioma is an aggressive cancer that occurs naturally in pet dogs. Canine high-grade glioma (cHGG) is treated with radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, but has no curative treatment. Within the past eight years, there have been advances in our imaging and histopathology standards as well as genetic charactereization of cHGG. However, there are only three cHGG cell lines publicly available, all of which were derived from astrocytoma and established using methods involving expansion of tumour cells in vitro on plastic dishes. In order to provide more clinically relevant cell lines for studying cHGG in vitro, the goal of this study was to establish cHGG patient-derived lines, whereby cancer cells are expanded in vivo by injecting cells into immunocompromized laboratory mice. The cells are then harvested from mice and used for in vitro studies. This method is the standard in the human field and has been shown to minimize the acquisition of genetic alterations and gene expression changes from the original tumour. Through a multi-institutional collaboration, we describe our methods for establishing two novel cHGG patient-derived lines, Boo-HA and Mo-HO, from a high-grade astrocytoma and a high-grade oligodendroglioma, respectively. We compare our novel lines to G06-A, J3T-Bg, and SDT-3G (traditional cHGG cell lines) in terms of proliferation and sensitivity to radiation. We also perform whole genome sequencing and identify an NF1 truncating mutation in Mo-HO. We report the characterization and availability of these novel patient-derived lines for use by the veterinary community.

24. Does Faculty-Led Short-Term Study Abroad Improve Students' Global Competence? Findings from a Systematic Review and Evidence Gap Map

Abstract

As a high-impact pedagogical practice, study abroad is frequently utilized as an internationalization strategy to build post-secondary students' global competence, but the impact of faculty-led short-term study abroad may vary widely across outcomes of interest. An understanding of student learning outcomes is especially needed now as COVID-19 begins to shift from pandemic to endemic and universities restart international initiatives. This systematic review synthesized and mapped evidence on global competence outcomes of short-term study abroad for undergraduate and graduate students. Studies (n=92) reported a total of 215 outcomes representing the three global competence domains of knowledge (41.4% of all outcomes), attitudes (38.1%), and skills (20.5%). Data sources used to assess global competence outcomes included self-administered surveys (40.1% of assessments), student journals (24.9%), and qualitative interviews (13.6%). While findings from this sample of studies offer evidence of positive impact of short-term study abroad on students' global competence, the substantive and methodological evidence gaps identified can help to build conceptual clarity and guide design of future assessment approaches.

25. The Effects of Instructional and Administrative Text Messages on Academic Achievement and Student Perception of Learning in a High School Food, Nutrition, and Wellness Classroom

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of instructional and administrative text messages on student academic achievement and sense of learning. Ninety-eight Food, Nutrition, and Wellness students in grades 9th through 12th were involved in this study. In this quasi-experimental study, there was an experimental group and a comparison group. Students in the experimental group received instructional and administrative text messages three times a week for a total of nine weeks. A one-way ANCOVA and independent samples t-test were used for data analyses. The study found a statistically significant difference in academic achievement and sense of learning with students in the experimental group scoring higher as compared to students in the control group. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference with females in the treatment group scoring higher than males in the treatment group.

Abstract

BackgroundGuidelines recommend measuring blood pressure (BP) in both arms, adopting the higher arm readings for diagnosis and management. Data to support this recommendation are lacking. We evaluated associations of higher and lower arm systolic BPs with diagnostic and treatment thresholds, and prognosis in hypertension, using data from the Inter-arm Blood Pressure Difference-Individual Participant Data Collaboration.MethodsOne-stage multivariable Cox regression models, stratified by study, were used to examine associations of higher or lower reading arm BPs with cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular events, in individual participant data meta-analyses pooled from 23 cohorts. Cardiovascular events were modelled for Framingham and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk scores. Model fit was compared throughout using Akaike information criteria.
