The student teaching experience is often an important capstone experience of teacher preparatory programs. Student teaching is designed to provide college students who are preparing to be educators with experience in an actual classroom while supervised by a certified teacher. The purpose of this study was to determine preservice teachers' perceptions of important elements of the student teaching experience both before and after the student teaching experience. The preservice teachers perceived the most important element of the student teaching experience was the cooperating teacher/student teacher relationship. Additionally, there was a negative change in the perceived level of importance for all students to have an SAE requirement, with accurate record books and diversity within the students' SAEs from much importance to medium importance. When placing preservice teachers for the student teaching internship, teacher educators might consider placing a higher emphasis on the cooperating teacher/student teacher relationships. Secondly, when placing preservice teachers for the student teaching internship, teacher educators could choose internship sites that emphasize SAE programs and have diverse facilities. Finally, we recommend future research could be conducted to further explore the role of the cooperating teacher and the important aspects of the cooperating teacher/student teacher relationship.

Introduction: This paper explores the potential influence of a single nucleotide variant in the ANK-2 gene on COVID-19 myocarditis-related ventricular tachycardia. Case Description: A 53-year-old female with a history of Crohn's disease and asthma developed COVID-19. Shortly after infection, she experienced symptoms of chest pressure, palpitations, and shortness of breath, leading to the eventual diagnosis of myocarditis complicated by recurrent ventricular tachycardia. Treatment with mechanistically driven anti-arrhythmic therapy and beta-blockers suppressed this highly symptomatic ventricular tachycardia. Genetic testing to further risk stratify and influence long term care identified a single nucleotide variant in the ANK-2 gene, which is known to be associated with arrhythmic risk. Discussion: This case study highlights the use of rationally selected anti-arrhythmic therapy, mexiletine, in the management of ventricular tachycardia associated with COVID-19 myocarditis and the presence of a single nucleotide variant in ANK-2, raising the possibility of its contribution to VT susceptibility and severity. Our patient demonstrated significant improvement with administered therapeutics, including the resolution of myocarditis and ventricular tachycardia. The normalization of the QT interval during the resolution phase further supports the potential influence of the genetic variant in ANK-2 on potassium channel activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Keratoconus is a bilateral ocular condition characterized by irregularities and the thinning of the cornea. Decreased central corneal thickness is a hallmark of the condition, and numerous genes have played a role in altering corneal thickness and the subsequent development of keratoconus. Variants in the structural and regulatory genes of the extracellular matrix have been highly associated with keratoconus, as well as with pectus excavatum, a chest wall deformity commonly seen in connective tissue disorders. This report describes a patient with a c.1720-11T>A intronic variant in the collagen-encoding gene, COL5A1, who was diagnosed with early-onset keratoconus and demonstrated a significant pectus excavatum. This report associates a COL5A1 variant with these seemingly unrelated phenotypic associations, further advancing the literature on the topic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allopurinol lowers urate production through the inhibition of xanthine oxidase. It is oxidatively hydroxylated to oxypurinol and is the most prescribed medication for gout treatment. Although it has a beneficial effect in the treatment of this common disease, like many medications, it is also known for having numerous adverse effects. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), diseases that exist on a spectrum, are two of the most dangerous adverse effects associated with allopurinol use. These immune-mediated disease processes involve almost every organ system. They are essential to recognize as early as possible, as they could potentially be deadly, requiring cessation of the medication with initial signs of rash or other early manifestations of SJS/TEN. One major consideration in the increased risk of allopurinol-mediated or modulated SJS/TEN is the need to have a lower dose in the setting of renal disease.
