2. Learning to Teach in the Field: Five Professors Tell How Running an Overseas Study Tour Improved Their Classroom Teaching

Abstract

This article examines the positive impact of overseas study tours on the teaching philosophies and classroom strategies used by the professors running the tours. While education scholars have identified long-term benefits of overseas study tours for students, less attention has been paid to flow-on benefits for teachers. This article aims to address this gap in the literature by having five Australian professors describe how their international study tour experiences changed and improved their teaching in the classroom. The article shows that in the process of developing a successful overseas study tour, professors can learn lessons about teaching that they can use productively in the classroom.

Abstract

Four polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to assess biological parentage of 453 offspring from 15 pregnant males from a natural population of the Western Australian seahorse Hippocampus angustus. Microsatellite genotypes in the progeny arrays were consistent with a monogamous mating system in which both females and males had a single mate during a male brooding period. Multilocus genotypes implicated four females in the adult population sample as contributors of eggs to the broods of collected males, but there was no evidence for multiple mating by females. Based on genotypic data from the progeny arrays, two loci were linked tightly and the recombination rate appeared to be approximately 10-fold higher in females than in males. The utility of linked loci for parentage analyses is discussed.

Abstract

Biodiversity conservation and management requires surveillance that captures the full spectrum of taxa. Here, we showcase the potential for a portfolio of visual, extractive, and molecular methods for detecting previously hidden components of tropical fish biodiversity in an economically and culturally valuable marine site that spans a tropical‐temperate ecotone—the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area. With scale and practicality in mind, we demonstrate how environmental DNA (eDNA) methods deployed in a stratified sampling design can yield a more comprehensive monitoring program for species presence than current alternatives (e.g., extractive sampling via anesthetic). eDNA from filtered water samples detected up to six times as many cryptobenthic fish species per site than samples collected with anesthetic, indicating it is a potentially powerful tool for assessing biodiversity of tropical fishes. However, there were also species that were only found when using anesthetic and the contribution of cryptobenthic species to overall diversity of the fish assemblage was unexpectedly low, suggesting not all cryptobenthic fish species have been detected with eDNA. There were also distinct differences in cryptobenthic assemblages both among sites and sample depths (2–3 m) when using eDNA from filtered water, suggesting this technique may be able to identify fine scale spatial differences in cryptobenthic fish assemblage. eDNA collected from water detects the most cryptobenthic species and is therefore an efficient tool for rapidly assessing biodiversity, but extractive techniques may still be required for biological and monitoring studies, and when combined with eDNA sampling provides the most comprehensive assessment of cryptobenthic fishes. 37. The Interrelationship of School District Expenditures and Student Academic Achievement in Oklahoma Public Elementary School Districts

Abstract

Purpose and Method of Study. The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze the relationship between school district expenditures and student academic achievement in 102 public elementary school districts in the state of Oklahoma. The secondary purpose was to investigate the relationship between school district expenditures and school district assessed valuation in those same school districts. Four research hypotheses, addressing both the primary and secondary purposes in this study, were postulated and tested utilizing a stepwise multiple regression analysis. Average school district expenditures by function from the 2005-2006 through 2009-2010 school years served as the independent variables for this study. Academic Performance Index (API) from the 2009-2010 school year and average assessed valuation per student from the 2005-2006 through 2009-2010 school years served as the dependent variables for this study. Findings and Conclusions. Administrative expenditures showed a negative relationship with API and demonstrated a positive relationship with assessed valuation per student when analyzing data from both the General Fund and All Funds. Operations and maintenance of plant services expenditures from the General Fund displayed a negative relationship with assessed valuation per student. Facilities acquisition and construction services expenditures from All Funds exhibited a positive relationship with API. Debt services expenditures from All Funds demonstrated a positive relationship with assessed valuation per student. Several conclusions were derived from the findings. The finding that administration expenditures showed a negative relationship with API suggested that elementary school district administrators and boards of education should review resource allocation decisions that might increase expenditures on administration. The finding that some General Fund expenditures by function correlated with assessed valuation per student suggested that increased revenue received outside the General Fund due to higher assessed valuations per student may impact the way school districts expend money within the General Fund. The finding that debt services expenditures showed a positive relationship with assessed valuation per student indicated that school districts with higher assessed valuations per student are more likely to pass bond issues and incur principal and interest payments on said bonds.
