Abstract

Amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition throughout the neuroaxis is a classical hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases, most notably Alzheimer's disease (AD). Aβ peptides of varied length and diverse structural conformations are deposited within the parenchyma and vasculature in the brains of individuals with AD. Neuropathologically, Aβ pathology can be assessed using antibodies to label and characterize their features, which in turn leads to a more extensive understanding of the pathological process. In the present study, we generated a novel monoclonal antibody, which we found to be specific for the N-terminal region of Aβ. This antibody reacted to amyloid precursor protein expressed in cultured cells and labels Aβ plaques and cerebral amyloid angiopathy in brain tissue from a mouse model of amyloidosis as well as post-mortem brain tissue from patients diagnosed with AD. This highly specific novel antibody will serve as a unique tool for future studies investigating Aβ deposition in novel mouse models and cross-sectional studies using post-mortem human tissue. 35. Improving the Parenting Skills of Young Teen Mothers in Grades 9th--12th through Parenting Classes, Training, and Mentoring.

Abstract

This paper discusses a practicum designed to address young teen mothers' lack of knowledge, experience, and skills needed to appropriately care for their infants. It documents that increased knowledge, enhanced interpersonal relationships, and augmented parenting skills made a difference in the teen mothers' approach to parenting. Parenting classes and/or training sessions were implemented, home visitations were conducted and mentors were assigned to accomplish these goals. Analysis of the data revealed that: (1) there was an increase in the teen mothers' knowledge about basic daily care and the developmental milestones and changes that occurred in their infants; (2) the teen mothers became more sensitive to their infants; (3) the teen mothers felt more supported by significant others; (4) the teen mothers reflected an increase in knowledge about child development and interactional skills of parents. Abstract

Sexual trauma (ST), which includes both sexual harassment and sexual assault, is associated with a variety of adverse mental and physical health outcomes in military and civilian populations. However, little is known about whether certain individual or military attributes or prior experiences may modify the relationship between recent ST and mental or physical health outcomes. Data from a longitudinal cohort study of current and former military members were used to examine whether individual and military factors modify the association between recent ST and health outcomes (posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, multiple somatic symptoms, and insomnia). Results indicated that demographic (sex, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity) and military factors (service branch, service component, military separation) generally did not modify the main effect of ST on the outcomes examined. On the other hand, factors known to be protective (spirituality, social support) and risk factors (childhood trauma, combat deployment, and mental health status) did modify the effect of ST on multiple outcomes examined; notably, protective effects were diminished among those who experienced recent ST. Protective factors were associated with the lowest risk of adverse outcomes among those with no ST, while risk reduction was less among survivors of ST. Diminished impacts also were found for cumulative risk factors, with the influence of multiple individual risk factors associated with increased risk but in a subadditive manner. We conclude that the effect of recent ST on the outcomes examined was persistent in the presence of potential protective factors, but that it may be impacted by ceiling effects in combination with other risk factors. 46. Writing inside the Box: Writing Instructors' Perspectives on E-Portfolio Assessment

Abstract

Higher education institutions concerned with authenticity and accountability have begun to take part in a movement towards implementing e-portfolios, also known as electronic and digital portfolios, to assess student-writing skills in various courses. As a result, writing instructors are increasingly being required to learn the technology of e-portfolios and gain proficiency in using them to teach and support their students. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand how writing instructors perceive the use of e-portfolios in their courses as a tool for student assessment and learning. The study also sought to understand if instructors think their prior experience with creating their own e-portfolio through training and professional development has influenced their ability to facilitate and support students with creating e-portfolio for writing courses. The findings in this study indicated a positive perception by writing instructors regarding the use of e-portfolios in their writing courses. 47. Compassion Fatigue among Social Work Students in Field Placements

Abstract

This pilot study, conducted with BSW and MSW field students at a public university in Southwestern United States, explored the psychological effect of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction on social work students in field placements. Results from the Professional Quality of Life Scale's compassion satisfaction and fatigue subscales indicated that social work students appear to be motivated and committed to the profession and have higher scores of compassion satisfaction than the instrument average. Students' scores on their risk for burnout were slightly higher than those of other helping professionals and their risk for compassion fatigue during their field experience was similar to more experienced helping professionals.
