Abstract

Understanding the nature and identity of dark matter is a key goal in the physics community. In the case that TeV-scale dark matter particles decay or annihilate into standard model particles, very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays (greater than 100 GeV) will be present in the final state. The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array that can indirectly detect VHE gamma rays in an energy range of 100 GeV to > 30 TeV. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are ideal candidates in the search for dark matter due to their high dark matter content, high mass-to-light ratios, and their low gamma-ray fluxes from astrophysical processes. This study uses a legacy data set of 638 hours collected on 17 dSphs, built over 11 years with an observing strategy optimized according to the dark matter content of the targets. The study addresses a broad dark matter particle mass range, extending from 200 GeV to 30 PeV. Abstract

In February 2017, the blazar OJ~287 underwent a period of intense multiwavelength activity. It reached a new historic peak in the soft X-ray (0.3-10 keV) band, as measured by Swift-XRT. This event coincides with a very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray outburst that led VERITAS to detect emission above 100 GeV, with a detection significance of $10\sigma$ (from 2016 December 9 to 2017 March 31). The time-averaged VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum was consistent with a soft power law ($\Gamma = -3.81 \pm 0.26$) and an integral flux corresponding to $\sim2.4\%$ that of the Crab Nebula above the same energy. Contemporaneous data from multiple instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum reveal complex flaring behavior, primarily in the soft X-ray and VHE bands. To investigate the possible origin of such an event, our study focuses on three distinct activity states: before, during, and after the February 2017 peak. The spectral energy distributions during these periods suggest the presence of at least two non-thermal emission zones, with the more compact one responsible for the observed flare. Abstract

G106.3$+$2.7, commonly considered a composite supernova remnant (SNR), is characterized by a boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and two distinct ("head" & "tail") regions in the radio band. A discovery of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission ($E_\gamma > 100$ GeV) followed by the recent detection of ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray emission ($E_\gamma > 100$ TeV) from the tail region suggests that G106.3$+$2.7 is a PeVatron candidate. We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the Boomerang PWN (100" around PSR J2229+6114) using archival radio and Chandra data obtained from two decades ago, a new NuSTAR X-ray observation from 2020, and upper limits on gamma-ray fluxes obtained by Fermi and VERITAS observatories. The NuSTAR observation allowed us to detect a 51.67 ms spin period from the pulsar PSR J2229+6114 and the PWN emission characterized by a power-law model with $\Gamma = 1.52\pm0.06$ up to 20 keV. Contrary to the previous radio study by Kothes et al. 2006, we prefer a much lower PWN B-field ($B\sim3$ $\mu$G) and larger distance ($d \sim 8$ kpc) based on (1) the non-varying X-ray flux over the last two decades, (2) the energy-dependent X-ray PWN size resulting from synchrotron burn-off and (3) the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) data. Our SED model suggests that the PWN is currently re-expanding after being compressed by the SNR reverse shock $\sim 1000$ years ago. In this case, the head region should be formed by GeV--TeV electrons injected earlier by the pulsar propagating into the low density environment.

Abstract

We report on multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar PKS 0735+178, located 2.2$^\circ$ away from the best-fit position of the IceCube neutrino event IceCube-211208A detected on December 8, 2021. The source was in a high-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and GeV gamma-ray bands around the time of the neutrino event, exhibiting daily variability in the soft X-ray flux. The X-ray data from Swift-XRT and NuSTAR characterize the transition between the low-energy and high-energy components of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), and the gamma-ray data from Fermi -LAT, VERITAS, and H.E.S.S. require a spectral cut-off near 100 GeV. Both X-ray and gamma-ray measurements provide strong constraints on the leptonic and hadronic models. We analytically explore a synchrotron self-Compton model, an external Compton model, and a lepto-hadronic model. Models that are entirely based on internal photon fields face serious difficulties in matching the observed SED. The existence of an external photon field in the source would instead explain the observed gamma-ray spectral cut-off in both leptonic and lepto-hadronic models and allow a proton jet power that marginally agrees with the Eddington limit in the lepto-hadronic model. We show a numerical lepto-hadronic model with external target photons that reproduces the observed SED and is reasonably consistent with the neutrino event despite requiring a high jet power., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

Abstract

The ground-based gamma-ray observatory VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is sensitive to photons of astrophysical origin with energies in the range between $\approx 85$ GeV to $\approx 30$ TeV. The instrument consists of four 12-m diameter imaging Cherenkov telescopes operating at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) in southern Arizona. VERITAS started four-telescope operations in 2007 and collects about 1100 hours of good-weather data per year. The VERITAS collaboration has published over 100 journal articles since 2008 reporting on gamma-ray observations of a large variety of objects: Galactic sources like supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and binary systems; extragalactic sources like star forming galaxies, dwarf-spheroidal galaxies, and highly-variable active galactic nuclei. There are no studies on objective performance metrics following medial meniscus repair in these athletes.Purpose: Examine the impact of MMT treated with surgical repair on performance metrics and career longevity in Major League Soccer (MLS) players.Methods: MLS players who sustained an MMT between 1993 and 2019 were identified via publicly available databases. These players were each matched to 2 uninjured controls by debut date, experience, position, race, ethnicity, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Demographic data and performance metrics were then collected for both groups. Matches, minutes, goals, assists, shots, shots on target, duels, and duel percentage won are collectively referred to as performance metrics. Statistical analysis compared demographic distributions and performance metrics between the MMT and control groups.Results: Thirty-three MLS players who had undergone medial meniscus repair were identified and matched to 66 controls. All performance metrics decreased in the MMT group when compared to their controls in the first year after injury. This difference remained significant even when the performance metrics were normalized with respect to time, indicating that the injured players both played less and were not as productive. At 2 years after injury, performance metrics returned to pre-injury levels and were equivalent to those of the healthy controls. Career length was found to be significantly different between the two groups at 8.81 ± 3.9 years for the MMT group and 12.63 ± 3.51 years for the control group (P < 0.001).Conclusion: MLS players undergoing medial meniscus repair had decreased performance metrics in the first year after injury but returned to baseline levels of play at the second year after injury. Abstract

In this article, we investigate magic type labelings of zero-divisor graphs. In particular, we turn our attention to semi-magic, magic, and supermagic labelings. We are able to construct infinitely many rings which admit these magic type labelings as well as infinitely many rings which do not have these magic type labeling. We further proceed to classify the magic type labeling properties for all of the rings which have zero-divisor graphs with up to 14 vertices. We then conclude with some conjectures about how these patterns may extend for larger zero-divisor graphs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Spectroscopy and dynamics of fluorescent protein chromophore anions

Abstract

Gas-phase photoelectron imaging spectroscopy has been combined with electrospray ionisation to examine the electronic structure and dynamics of a variety of biologically relevant chromophores. Both nanosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy techniques have been employed and many of these experimental measurements have been complimented by ab initio calculations. The photodetachment spectra of model chromophore anions of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and Cyan Fluorescent Protein (CFP) along with their constituent moieties, phenol and indole, have been recorded at 269 nm and 330 nm. This study provided measurements of the vertical and adiabatic detachment energies of the ground and first excited state radicals of all four molecules. A detailed nanosecond photoelectron spectroscopy study of the GFP model chromophore anion was then undertaken using a range of wavelengths between 315 nm and 328 nm. This has revealed the interplay between direct and indirect detachment processes and their influence on the photoelectron spectra. A femtosecond time-resolved study of the model GFP chromophore anion was also performed along with ab initio calculations to identify key molecular structures. This study revealed that the ultrafast decay dynamics of the gas-phase model anion have similar timescales as those measured in solution. In another study, photodetachment spectra of chemically modified GFP model chromophore anions were measured at 350 nm. The addition of strongly electron donating or withdrawing groups on the phenoxide moiety of the chromophore demonstrates how chemistry can be exploited to tune the electron emission properties the chromophore. Finally, a study of model chromophore anions of Photoactive Yellow Protein (PYP) was undertaken. This work examined the photoelectron spectra of three isomers of the PYP model chromophore at a wide variety of wavelengths between 315 nm and 364 nm. The vibrationally resolved spectra allow us to identify the predominate anion isomer produced by electrospray ionisation and highlights the importance of direct and indirect photodetachment pathways in anion spectroscopy.

Abstract

We compare existing high spectral resolution (R=40,000) CaII K observations towards 88 mainly B-type stars, and new observations at R=10,000 towards 3 stars, with 21-cm HI emission-line profiles, in order to search for optical absorption towards known intermediate and high velocity cloud complexes. Given certain assumptions, limits to the gas phase abundance of CaII are estimated for the cloud components. We use the data to derive the following distances from the Galactic plane (z); 1) Tentative lower z-height limits of 2800 pc and 4100 pc towards Complex C using lack of absorption in the spectra of HD 341617 and PG 0855+294. 2) A weak lower z-height of 1400 pc towards Complex WA-WB using lack of absorption in EC 09470-1433 and weak lower limit of 2470 pc with EC 09452-1403. 3) An upper z-height of 2470 pc towards a southern intermediate velocity cloud (IVC) with v_LSR=-55 km/s using PG 2351+198. 4) Detection of a possible IVC in CaK absorption at v_LSR=+52 km/s using EC 20104-2944. No associated HI in emission is detected. At this position, normal Galactic rotation predicts velocities of up to +25 km/s. The detection puts an upper z-height of 1860 pc to the cloud. 5) Tentative HI and CaK detections towards an IVC at +70 km/s in the direction of HVC Complex WE, sightline EC 06387-8045, indicating that the IVC may be at a z-height lower than 1770 pc. 6) Detection of CaK absorption in the spectrum of PG 0855+294 in the direction of IV20, indicating that this IVC has a z-height smaller than 4100 pc. 7) A weak lower z-height of 4300 pc towards a small HVC with v_LSR=+115 km/s at l,b=200,+52, using lack of absorption in the CaK spectrum of PG 0955+291., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The astrophysical journal / 1 950(2), 152 (2023). doi:10.3847/1538-4357/acd2d0, We report the detection of very high energy gamma-ray emission from the blazar S3 1227+25 (VER J1230+253) with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). VERITAS observations of the source were triggered by the detection of a hard-spectrum GeV flare on 2015 May 15 with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT). A combined 5 hr VERITAS exposure on May 16 and 18 resulted in a strong 13σ detection with a differential photon spectral index, Γ = 3.8 ± 0.4, and a flux level at 9% of the Crab Nebula above 120 GeV. This also triggered target-of-opportunity observations with Swift, optical photometry, polarimetry, and radio measurements, also presented in this work, in addition to the VERITAS and Fermi-LAT data. A temporal analysis of the gamma-ray flux during this period finds evidence of a shortest variability timescale of τ$_{obs}$ = 6.2 ± 0.9 hr, indicating emission from compact regions within the jet, and the combined gamma-ray spectrum shows no strong evidence of a spectral cutoff. An investigation into correlations between the multiwavelength observations found evidence of optical and gamma-ray correlations, suggesting a single-zone model of emission. Abstract

Antenatal screening/testing of pregnant women should be carried out according to the guidelines of the National Health Service (NHS) Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme. Newborn screening and, when necessary, follow-up testing and referral, should be carried out according to the guidelines of the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme. All babies under 1 year of age arriving in the United Kingdom should be offered screening for sickle cell disease (SCD). Preoperative screening for SCD should be carried out in patients from ethnic groups in which there is a significant prevalence of the condition. Emergency screening with a sickle solubility test must always be followed by definitive analysis. Laboratories performing antenatal screening should utilise methods that are capable of detecting significant variants and are capable of quantitating haemoglobins A2 and F at the cut-off points required by the national antenatal screening programme. The laboratory must ensure a provisional report is available for antenatal patients within three working days from sample receipt.

36. Predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in fetuses with isolated mild ventriculomegaly

Abstract

Background: Fetal ventriculomegaly is the the most common intracranial abnormality detected antenatally. When ventriculomegaly is mild and the only, isolated, abnormality detected (isolated mild ventriculomegaly (IMVM)) the prognosis is generally considered to be good. We aim to determine if there are features on in utero MRI (iuMRI) that can identify fetuses with IMVM who have lower risks of abnormal neurodevelopment outcome.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods: We studied cases recruited into the MRI to enhance the diagnosis of fetal developmental brain abnormalities in utero (MERIDIAN) study, specifically those with: confirmed IMVM, 3D volume imaging of the fetal brain and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 3 years. We explored the influence of sex of the fetus, laterality of the ventriculomegaly and intracranial compartmental volumes in relation to neurodevelopmental outcome.\ud \ud \ud \ud Findings: Forty-two fetuses met the criteria (33 male and 9 female). There was no obvious correlation between fetal sex and the risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcome. Unilateral IMVM was present in 23 fetuses and bilateral IMVM in 19 fetuses. All fetuses with unilateral IMVM had normal neurodevelopmental outcomes, while only 12/19 with bilateral IMVM had normal neurodevelopmental outcomes. There was no obvious correlation between measure of intracranial volumes and risk of abnormal developmental outcomes.\ud \ud \ud \ud Interpretation: The most important finding is the very high chance of a good neurodevelopmental outcome observed in fetuses with unilateral IMVM, which is a potentially important finding for antenatal counselling. There does not appear to be a link between the volume of the ventricular system or brain volume and the risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcome.

39. Antenatal and delivery practices and neonatal mortality amongst women with institutional and non-institutional deliveries in rural Zimbabwe: observational data from a cluster randomized trial

BACKGROUND: Despite achieving relatively high rates of antenatal care, institutional delivery, and HIV antiretroviral therapy for women during pregnancy, neonatal mortality has remained stubbornly high in Zimbabwe. Clearer understanding of causal pathways is required to inform effective interventions. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data from the Sanitation Hygiene Infant Nutrition Efficacy (SHINE) trial, a cluster-randomized community-based trial among pregnant women and their infants, to examine care during institutional and non-institutional deliveries in rural Zimbabwe and associated birth outcomes. RESULTS: Among 4423 pregnant women, 529 (11.9%) delivered outside a health institution; hygiene practices were poorer and interventions to minimise neonatal hypothermia less commonly utilised for these deliveries compared to institutional deliveries. Among 3441 infants born in institutions, 592 (17.2%) were preterm (< 37 weeks gestation), while 175/462 (37.9%) infants born outside health institutions were preterm (RR: 2.20 (1.92, 2.53). Similarly, rates of stillbirth [1.2% compared to 3.0% (RR:2.38, 1.36, 4.15)] and neonatal mortality [2.4% compared to 4.8% (RR: 2.01 1.31, 3.10)] were higher among infants born outside institutions. Among mothers delivering at home who reported their reason for having a home delivery, 221/293 (75%) reported that precipitous labor was the primary reason for not having an institutional delivery while 32 (11%), 34 (12%), and 9 (3%), respectively, reported distance to the clinic, financial constraints, and religious/personal preference. CONCLUSIONS: Preterm birth is common among all infants in rural Zimbabwe, and extremely high among infants born outside health institutions. Our findings indicate that premature onset of labor, rather than maternal choice, may be the reason for many non-institutional deliveries in low-resource settings, initiating a cascade of events resulting in a two-fold higher risk of stillbirth and neo

The laboratory diagnosis of malaria depends on skilled examination of well-stained thick and thin blood films. Rapid diagnostic tests are a useful supplement and the use of nucleic acid-based testing in diagnostic laboratories should also be considered. These British Society for Haematology guidelines update the 2003 guidelines for malaria diagnosis. Training, quality control, incidental diagnosis, differential diagnosis and reference laboratory referral are considered.

Objective.Electroencephalography (EEG) is a key tool for non-invasive recording of brain activity and the diagnosis of epilepsy. EEG monitoring is also widely employed in rodent models to track epilepsy development and evaluate experimental therapies and interventions. Whereas automated seizure detection algorithms have been developed for clinical EEG, preclinical versions face challenges of inter-model differences and lack of EEG standardization, leaving researchers relying on time-consuming visual annotation of signals.Approach.In this study, a machine learning-based seizure detection approach, 'Epi-AI', which can semi-automate EEG analysis in multiple mouse models of epilepsy was developed. Twenty-six mice with a total EEG recording duration of 6451 h were used to develop and test the Epi-AI approach. EEG recordings were obtained from two mouse models of kainic acid-induced epilepsy (Models I and III), a genetic model of Dravet syndrome (Model II) and a pilocarpine mouse model of epilepsy (Model IV). The Epi-AI algorithm was compared against two threshold-based approaches for seizure detection, a local Teager-Kaiser energy operator (TKEO) approach and a global Teager-Kaiser energy operator-discrete wavelet transform (TKEO-DWT) combination approach.Main results.Epi-AI demonstrated a superior sensitivity, 91.4%–98.8%, and specificity, 93.1%–98.8%, in Models I–III, to both of the threshold-based approaches which performed well on individual mouse models but did not generalise well across models. The performance of the TKEO approach in Models I–III ranged from 66.9%–91.3% sensitivity and 60.8%–97.5% specificity to detect spontaneous seizures when compared with expert annotations. The sensitivity and specificity of the TKEO-DWT approach were marginally better than the TKEO approach in Models I–III at 73.2%–80.1% and 75.8%–98.1%, respectively. When tested on EEG from Model IV which was not used in developing the Epi-AI approach, Epi-AI was able to identify seizures with 76.3% sensitivity and 98.1% specificity.Significance.Epi-AI has the potential to provide fast, objective and reproducible semi-automated analysis of multiple types of seizure in long-duration EEG recordings in rodents.

47. Bereaved families' experiences of end-of-life decision making for general medicine patients.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Family involvement in decision making for hospitalised patients is associated with improved end-of-life care. Yet, these discussions can be challenging for physicians and families and associated with distress, confusion and conflict. There is a need to understand how best to support families involved in decisions regarding the transition from active to palliative treatment in hospital settings. AIM: To explore bereaved families' experiences of end-of-life decision making for general medicine patients. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory study framed by social constructionism using semistructured interviews and thematic analysis. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The general medicine units of one large public hospital in Melbourne, Australia. We recruited 28 bereaved family members of patients who had received end-of-life care. FINDINGS: Patients and families depended on physicians to explain clinical complexity and treatment beneficence; however, trust in medical judgement was mediated by participant's own interpretations of clinical progress. Families sought to be respected as advocates and experienced distress if physicians disregarded their perspectives and insight concerning patient preferences. Ideally, families supported patients to express their preferences to physicians. Otherwise, families contextualised treatment decisions through their knowledge of patient's values and quality of life. Families often felt burdened by or excluded from medical decision making and experienced distress and confusion regarding their rights to request or refuse treatment. CONCLUSION(S): Our study highlights how families contribute to decision making to ensure end-of-life care treatments reflect patient preferences. Physicians can ease families' distress around treatment withdrawal by providing a meaningful explanation of complex clinical issues, clarifying decision-making roles and acknowledge families' desire to protect and advocate for their loved one.Copyright © Author(s)
