Abstract

This contribution will report on the experimental work on the level structure of 168Dy. The experimental data have been taken as part of the EURICA decay spectroscopy campaign at RIBF, RIKEN in November 2014. In the experiment, a 238U primary beam is accelerated up to 345 MeV/u with an average intensity of 12 pnA. The nuclei of interest are produced by in-flight fission of 238U impinging on Be target with a thickness of 5 mm. The excited states of 168Dy have been populated through the decay from a newly identified isomeric state and via the β decay from 168Tb. In this contribution, scientific motivations, experimental procedure and some preliminary results for this study are presented.

Abstract

Neutron-rich 160,161,162Sm isotopes have been populated at the RIBF, RIKEN via β first time. β-coincident γ rays were observed in all three isotopes including γ rays from the isomeric decay of 160Sm and 162Sm. The isomers in 160Sm and 162Sm have previously been observed but have been populated via β decay for the first time. The isomeric state in 162Sm is assigned a 4−v72+[ 633 ]⊗v12−[ 521 ]${4^ - }v{{7 \over 2}^ + }\left[ {633} \right] \otimes v{{1 \over 2}^ - }\left[ {521} \right]$ configuration based on the decay pattern. The level schemes of 160Sm and 162Sm are presented. The ground states in the parent nuclei 160Pm and 162Pm are both assigned a 6−v72+[633]⊗π52−[532]${6^ - }v{{7 \over 2}^ + }\left[ {633} \right] \otimes \pi {{5 \over 2}^ - }\left[ {532} \right]$ configuration based on the population of states in the daughter nuclei. Blocked BCS calculations were performed to further investigate the spin-parities of the ground states in 160Pm, 161Pm, and 162Pm, and the isomeric state in 162Sm

Abstract

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

Abstract

This paper covers the design and programming of a hybrid (digital/analog) neural network to function as an artificial retina with the ability to perform a spatial discrete cosine transform. We describe the structure of the circuit, which uses an analog cell that is interlinked using a programmable digital array. The paper is broken into three main parts. First, we present the results of a Matlab simulation. Then we show the circuit simulation in Spice. This is followed by a demonstration of the practical device. This system has intentionally separated components with the specialty analog circuits being separated from the readily available digital field programmable gate array (FPGA) components. Further development includes the use of rapid manufacture-able organic electronics used for the analog components. The planned uses for this platform include crowd development of software that uses the underlying pulse based processing. The development package will include simulators in the form of Matlab and Spice type software platforms., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

We study for the first time the internal structure of 140Te through the beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of 140Sb. The very neutron-rich 140Sb, Z = 51 and N = 89, ions were produced by the in-flight fission of 238U beam on a 9Be target at 345 MeV per nucleon at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory, RIKEN. The half-life and spin-parity of 140Sb are reported as 124(30) ms and (4-), respectively. In addition to the excited states of 140Te produced by the beta-decay branch, the beta-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron emission branches were also established. By identifying the first 2+ and 4+ excited states of 140Te, we found that Te isotopes persist their vibrator character with E(4+)/E(2+) = 2. We discuss the distinctive features manifest in this region, such as valence neutron symmetry and asymmetry, revealed in pairs of isotopes with the same neutron holes and particles with respect to N = 82., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, EURICA campaign

Abstract

International audience; The β decay of Te90142 to I89142 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a U238 beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a Be9 target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in I142 were established by β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. The observed (1+) states in I142 could be interpreted to be predominantly the ν0h9/2⊗π0h11/2 configuration formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Additional features of the (1+) states are discussed by comparing with neighboring heavier isotones, such as Cs144 and La146. In the context of deformed shell-model calculations, the (11+) state is closely related to the ν[5,3,2]3/2⊗π[5,5,0]1/2 configuration, which may be related to the weak Gamow-Teller transition strength.

Abstract

Structure of the neutron-rich N=86 isotope 140Xe, located northeast of a doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn, is investigated by β−γ spectroscopy. Two β-decay isomers in 140I are newly found in the study of two different β decays of 140I which were produced by two reactions (i) direct in-flight fission at a primary target and (ii) β decay of 140Te at an active stopper. Half-lives of the β decays of the ground state, the low-spin isomer, and the high-spin isomer are determined to be 0.38(2), 0.91(5), and 0.47(4) s, respectively. Decay schemes of the β decay of the high-spin isomer and of the mixed β decays of the ground state and the low-spin isomer in 140I to 140Xe are constructed using the information on γ-ray coincidence relation and γ-ray intensity. Nuclear structures of the low-lying states in 140Xe and 140I are discussed by comparing the experimental results to two theoretical calculations based on a large-scale shell model and the deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation. Possible candidates for (quasi-)γ-band members of 2+ and 4+ states and the octupole collective 1− state are proposed in 140Xe. Increase of quadrupole, triaxial, and octupole collectivities is discussed with the increase of neutron and proton numbers.

This 1+ state can be interpreted as being associated with the π0h11/2⊗ν0h9/2 partner orbital configuration populated by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Details of the structure of I138 are discussed in terms of the proton-neutron interactions and Gamow-Teller transition strength within the theoretical context of shell-model calculations.

From the β decay of 138Te, the level scheme of 138I was supplemented with new spin and parity assignments, such as the low-lying negative-parity states and a positive-parity 1+ state. This 1+ state can be interpreted as being associated with the π0h11/2⊗ν0h9/2 partner orbital configuration populated by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Details of the structure of 138I are discussed in terms of the proton-neutron interactions and Gamow-Teller transition strength within the theoretical context of shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The change of the shell structure in atomic nuclei, so-called nuclear shell evolution, occurs due to changes of major configurations through particle-hole excitations inside one nucleus, as well as due to variation of the number of constituent protons or neutrons. We have investigated how the shell evolution affects Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions that dominate the beta decay in the region below Sn-132 using the newly obtained experimental data on a long-lived isomer in Ag-127. The T-1/2 = 67.5(9) ms isomer has been identified with a spin and parity of (27/2(+)) at an excitation energy of 1942(-20)(+14) keV, and found to decay via an internal transition of an E3 character, which competes with the dominant beta-decay branches towards the high-spin states in Cd-127. The underlying mechanism of a strong GT transition from the Ag-127 isomer is discussed in terms of configuration-dependent optimization of the effective single-particle energies in the framework of a shell-model approach. Abstract

Newly observed decay schemes of the nuclei Sb-137 and Sb-138 are reported. The neutron-rich Sb isotopes were produced by the in-flight fragmentation of a U-238 primary beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. Several new excited states of Te-137 with tentatively assigned spin-parities of (5/2(-)), (9/2(-)), and (7/2) have been established which play an important role in the evolution of neutron levels beyond N = 82. The study of the beta decay of Sb-138 led to a considerable extension of the level scheme of Te-138 including the identification of several nonyrast states. The structure of Te-137 and Te-138 is discussed on the basis of large-scale shell-model calculations performed using two different effective interactions.

Abstract

The neutron-rich dysprosium isotopes ¹⁶⁸Dy₁₀₂ and ¹⁶⁹Dy₁₀₃ have been investigated using the EURICA γ-ray spectrometer, following production via in-flight fission of a high-intensity uranium beam in conjunction with isotope separation through the BigRIPS separator at RIBF in RIKEN Nishina Center. For ¹⁶⁸Dy, a previously unreported isomer with a half-life of 0.57(7) μs has been identified at an excitation energy of 1378 keV, and its presence affirmed independently using γ-γ-γ coincidence data taken with Gammasphere via two-proton transfer from an enriched ¹⁷⁰Er target performed at Argonne National Laboratory. This isomer is assigned Jπ = Kπ = (4⁻) based on the measured transition strengths, decay patterns, and the energy systematics for two-quasiparticle states in N = 102 isotones. The underlying mechanism of two-quasiparticle excitations in the doubly midshell region is discussed in comparison with the deformed QRPA and multi-quasiparticle calculations. In ¹⁶⁹Dy, the B(E2) value for the transition de-exciting the previously unreported Kπ = (1/2⁻) isomeric state at 166 keV to the Kπ = (5/2⁻) ground state is approximately two orders of magnitude larger than the E2 strength for the corresponding isomeric-decay transition in the N = 103 isotone ¹⁷³Yb, suggesting the presence of a significant γ-vibrational admixture with a dominant neutron one-quasiparticle component in the isomeric state.

Abstract

The neutron-rich isotopes of palladium have attracted considerable interest in terms of the evolution of the N = 82 neutron shell closure and its influence on the r-process nucleosynthesis. In this Letter, we present the first spectroscopic information on the excited states in Pd-125(79) and Pd-127(81) studied using the EURICA gamma-ray spectrometer, following production via in-flight fission of a high-intensity U-238 beam at the RIBF facility. New isomeric states with half-lives of 144(4) ns and 39(6) mu s have been assigned spins and parities of (23/2(+)) and (19/2(+)) in Pd-125 and Pd-127, respectively. The observed level properties are compared to a shell-model calculation, suggesting the competition between proton excitations and neutron excitations in the proton-hole and neutron-hole systems in the vicinity of the doubly magic nucleus Sn-132. Abstract

Excited states have been studied in \iso{159}{Sm}, \iso{161}{Sm}, \iso{162}{Sm} (Z~=~62), \iso{163}{Eu} (Z~=~63), and \iso{164}{Gd} (Z~=~64), populated by isomeric decay following 238U projectile fission at RIBF, RIKEN. The isomer half-lives range from 50 ns to 2.6 \mus. In comparison with other published data, revised interpretations are proposed for \iso{159}{Sm} and \iso{163}{Eu}. The first data for excited states in \iso{161}{Sm} are presented, where a 2.6 \mus isomer is assigned a three-quasiparticle, K^\pi = 17/2^- structure. The interpretation is supported by multi-quasiparticle Nilsson-BCS calculations, including the blocking of pairing correlations. A consistent set of reduced E1 hindrance factors is obtained. Limited evidence is also reported for isomeric decay in 163Sm, 164Eu and 165Eu.

Abstract

White light-emitting devices based on a donor-acceptor structure were fabricated in order to investigate the dependence of the optical properties of white light emission on the thickness variance (15, 20, 25, and 30 nm) of the emissive layer. The emissive layer has a donor-acceptor system with the host 4,4′,4′′-tris(carbasol-l-nyl)triphenylamine molecule doped with 4,4′-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazovinylene)-1,1′-biphenyl (BCzVBi) and 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphtacene (Rubrene) molecules for blue and yellowish-green light activators, respectively. The characteristics of current density were analyzed by using a power function of applied field, J=σlEl+1 and the characteristic exponential function, J=J0(e(V-Vd)/V0-1). Through spectroscopic analysis, we obtained three physical quantities governing the device performance: 1) an effective conductivity, 2) a threshold potential, and 3) a characteristic potential barrier, which are associated with the trap-charge limited concentration in the bulk layer, the energy gap of the organic materials, and the barrier energy at the contact of electrodes, respectively. The electroluminescent spectra were studied quantitatively using a multi-peak fit with a Gaussian distribution for each electromagnetic transition. By this approach, we deduced the energy levels of the BCzVBi and Rubrene molecules that give leading information on the light emission mechanism and the energy transfer in the host-dopant system. Abstract

Blue organic light-emitting devices were fabricated with an activator of 4,4′-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazovinylene)-1,1′-biphenyl doped into the various host materials such as N,N′-bis-(1-naphtyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-1,1-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine; 4,4′-bis(2,2′-diphenylyinyl)-1,1′-biphenyl; 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl) anthracene; and 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene to investigate optical properties of blue light emission in the host-dopant system. By spectroscopic analysis based on multi-peak fits to the emission spectra, we found that energy transfer between the host and dopant molecules have a strong correlation with key features; current density, luminous efficiency, and color index for the devices. Among the present dopant-host systems, the TPBi molecule was found to be the best molecule as a host material for our devices. In contrast, the DPVBi host induced a complex excimer (electromer) leading to a shoulder spectrum with a longer wavelength emission. The -decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei 144−151Cs, 146−154Ba, 148−156La, 150−158Ce, 153−160Pr, 156−162Nd, 159−163Pm, 160−166Sm, 161−168Eu, 165−170Gd, 166−172Tb, 169−173Dy, 172−175Ho and two isomeric states 174mEr, 172mDy were measured at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF), providing a new experimental basis to test theoretical models. Striking, large drops of -decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N = 97 for 58Ce, 59Pr, 60Nd, 62Sm, and N = 105 for 63Eu, 64Gd, 65Tb, 66Dy. Features in the data mirror the interplay between pairing effects and microscopic structure. r-Process network calculations performed for a range of mass models and astrophysical conditions show that the 57 half-lives measured for the first time play an important role in shaping the abundance pattern of rare-earth elements in the solar system.
