The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze how communities of faith can overcome key barriers and fulfill their responsibility to respond to the moral injury of military veterans and military families. Moral injury is a concept within the broader discourse concerning traumatic experiences and responses that pertains particularly to experiences that overwhelm a person's internalized moral covenant within their social relational world. Communities of faith offer unique resources for many veterans and military families in the process of transitioning into civilian life. However, limited understanding of military experiences and culture and discomfort with moral anguish, including intense forms of guilt, shame, disgust, and contempt as well as traumatic experiences more broadly, too often diminish the efficacy of such ministries with veterans and military families. This article explores the powerful influence that trauma can have on individuals and the ways in which this influence might be addressed in the development of adult religious education. It asks how we can facilitate deepening a person's relationship with God and others when trauma has damaged a person's capacity to relate. Suggestions are made for future work by integrating trauma analysis from Judith Herman and Bessel van der Kolk with theological insight from Mary Elizabeth Moore and Rebecca Chopp. Five qualities of a trauma-informed approach to adult religious education are proposed. Topics discussed include the maximum potential intensity (MPI) solution can attained hurricane under a thermodynamic condition, Lorenz's model generalization for the predictability of flows with many scales of motion and predictability of a flow which possesses many scales of motion.

Herein, we present the initial application of the NOAA-EPA Atmosphere-Chemistry Coupler (NACC) in the cloud ("NACC-Cloud", version 1), which processes NOAA's operational Global Forecast System version 16 (GFSv16) meteorology on-demand and produces model-ready meteorological files needed to drive U.S. EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. NACC is adapted from the U.S. EPA's Meteorology-Chemistry Interface Processor version 5 (MCIPv5) and is used as the primary model coupler in the current operational NWS/NOAA air quality forecasting model. The development and use of NACC-Cloud in this work are critical to provide the scientific community streamlined access to NOAA's operational GFSv16 data and user-defined processing and download of model-ready, meteorological input for any regional CMAQ domain worldwide. The NACC-Cloud system was implemented on the Amazon® Web Services High-Performance Computing platform, and results from this work show that the NACC-Cloud system is immediately beneficial to the air quality modeling community worldwide. Air quality forecasting system is an essential tool widely used by environmental managers to mitigate adverse health effects of air pollutants. This work presents the latest development of the next generation regional air quality model (AQM) forecast system within the Unified Forecast System (UFS) framework in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The UFS air quality model incorporates the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model as its main chemistry component. In this system, CMAQ is integrated as a column model to solve gas and aerosol chemistry while the transport of chemical species is processed by UFS. The current AQM version 7 (AQMv7) is coupled with an earlier version of CMAQ (version 5.2.1). Here we describe the development of the updated AQMv7 by coupling to a 'state-of-the-science' CMAQ version 5.4. The updates include improvements in gas and aerosol chemistry, dry deposition processes, and structural changes to the Input/Output (IO) interface, enhancing both computational efficiency and the representation of air-surface exchange processes. A simulation was conducted for the period of August 2023 to assess the effects of these updates on the forecast performance of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), two major air pollutants over the continental United States (CONUS). The results show that the updated model demonstrates a significantly enhanced capability in simulating O3 over the CONUS by reducing the positive bias during both day and night, leading to a reduction of the mean bias by 50 % and 72 % for hourly and the maximum daily 8-hour average O3, respectively. Spatially, the updated model lowers the positive bias of hourly O3 in all of the ten EPA regions, particularly within the Great Plains. Similarly, the updates induce uniformly lower fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations across the CONUS domain, reducing the positive bias in the northeast and central Great Plain and exacerbating the negative bias in the west and south. The updated model does not improve model performance for PM2.5 in the vicinity of fire emission sources as compared to AQMv7, thus indicating a focal point of model uncertainty and needed improvement. Despite these challenges, the study highlights the importance of the ongoing refinements for reliable air quality predictions from the UFS-AQM model, which is the future replacement of NOAA's current operational air quality forecast system. • A methodology is developed to estimate wavelength-dependent light in a forest canopy. • Wavelength-dependent leaf optical properties change the shape of the light spectrum. • In-canopy photolysis frequencies are over-predicted with broadband radiative transfer. • Canopy radiative transfer scheme impacts isoprene emissions and levels. Although photolysis frequencies are wavelength-dependent and the dependence varies among chemical species, previous canopy radiative transfer models did not consider more than three broad bands (ultraviolet, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and near-infrared). In this study, high spectral resolution and wavelength-dependent idealized leaf optical properties allow us to determine the disposition of the light spectrum within a mixed deciduous forest canopy. Four radiative transfer approaches of varying complexity are applied to obtain vertical profiles of spectral actinic flux. Broad-band radiation measurements made above and below a mixed deciduous forest provide the necessary information to verify the fidelity of each radiative transfer approach. Model comparison results indicate that the Beer–Lambert scheme gives less total actinic flux, while the other three schemes give similar actinic flux profiles. Spectral actinic flux profiles are used to calculate in-canopy photolysis for different chemical species and to assess the importance of in-canopy photochemistry in modifying biogenic volatile organic compounds transported to the overlying atmospheric boundary layer. We find that, depending on the time of day and chemical species, percent errors in photolysis frequencies incurred by using a common in-canopy approximation based on weighting by relative PAR profiles can be as high as ± 50% in lower regions of the canopy, or 10–20% in daily canopy integrated photolysis frequency. Results obtained using a one-dimensional photochemical model suggest that choice of canopy radiative transfer scheme can have substantial impacts on in-canopy chemical reactions and concentrations in the overlying atmospheric boundary layer air. Such effects caused in-canopy gas concentration differences ranging from 8% for ozone and 35% for hydroxyl radical to 77% for nitrate radical. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the current paper, we aim to expand the dialogue about applying psychological flexibility processes to moral injury-related spiritual suffering using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Psychological flexibility is the process of practicing present moment awareness and openness to experiences of emotions and thoughts, while also choosing to engage in actions that are consistent with one's values. This open, aware, and engaged approach to life fits well with spiritual endeavors. We provide a framework and a case example illustrating how spiritual care providers and Chaplains can use psychological flexibility processes to target spiritual suffering in the context of moral injury. Eastern Africa is a common region of African easterly wave (AEW) onset and AEW early life. How the large-scale environment over East Africa relates to the likelihood of an AEW subsequently undergoing tropical cyclogenesis in a climatology has not been documented. This study addresses the following hypothesis: AEWs that undergo tropical cyclogenesis (i.e., developing AEWs) initiate and propagate under a more favorable monsoon large-scale environment over eastern Africa when compared with nondeveloping AEWs. Using a 21-yr August–September (1990–2010) climatology of AEWs, differences in the large-scale environment between developers and nondevelopers are identified and are proposed to be used as key predictors of subsequent tropical cyclone (TC) formation and could inform tropical cyclogenesis prediction. TC precursors when compared with nondeveloping AEWs experience an anomalously active West African monsoon, stronger northerly flow, more intense zonal Somali jet, anomalous convergence over the Marrah Mountains (region of AEW forcing), and a more intense and elongated African easterly jet. These large-scale conditions are linked to near-trough attributes of developing AEWs that favor more moisture ingestion, vertically aligned circulation, a stronger initial 850-hPa vortex, a deeper wave pouch, and arguably more AEW and mesoscale convective systems interactions. AEWs that initiate over eastern Africa and cross the west coast of Africa are more likely to undergo tropical cyclogenesis than those initiating over central or West Africa. This study examines the formation of a double warm-core (DWC) structure in intense tropical cyclones (TCs) that was captured in almost all supertyphoon cases during the 2012-14 real-time typhoon forecasts in the northwestern Pacific basin with the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model (HWRF). By using an idealized configuration of HWRF to focus on the intrinsic mechanism of the DWC formation, it is shown that the development of DWC in intense TCs is accompanied by a thin inflow layer above the typical upper outflow layer. The development of this thin inflow layer in the lower stratosphere (~100-75 hPa), which is associated with an inward pressure gradient force induced by cooling at the cloud top, signifies intricate interaction of TCs with the lower stratosphere as TCs become sufficiently intense, which has not been examined previously. Specifically, it is demonstrated that a higher-level inflow can advect potentially warm air from the lower stratosphere toward the inner-core region, thus forming an upper-level warm core that is separated from a midlevel one of tropospheric air. Such formation of the upper-level warm anomaly in intense TCs is linked to an episode of intensification at the later stage of TC development. While these results are produced by HWRF, the persistent DWC and UIL features in all HWRF simulations of intense TCs suggest that the lower stratosphere may have significant impacts on the inner-core structures of intense TCs beyond the current framework of TCs with a single warm core.
