6. Monitoring of air pollutants at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea, during March-April 1994

Abstract

Gaseous species and total suspended particles were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea, between 11 March and 19 April 1994. The concentrations of nonsea salt (nss) ions were higher than those measured in clean marine areas of Japan and other background marine areas of the world. In particular, the nss sulfate concentration was comparable to that measured in Seoul. The average S[O.sub.2] and N[O.sub.x] concentrations were approximately 0.97 and 3.5 ppb, respectively, which were lower than those at other urban areas in Korea but higher than those of other remote areas in the world. In contrast, the average [O.sub.3] concentration was approximately 55 ppb, which is comparable to or higher than those at remote sites in Japan that were influenced by long-range transport of air pollutants. Half of the air parcels during the period were from northern China and about 30% of the air parcels from southern China. The main difference of air pollutant levels between the two areas was higher crustal species and lower nss sulfate concentrations for air parcels from northern China. The nss [Mathematical Expression Omitted] concentrations had a strong correlation with nss [K.sup.+], NHL and [O.sub.3] concentrations. In addition, the nss [Ca.sup.2+] concentrations had a strong correlation with the nss [K.sup.+] and nss [Mg.sup.2+] concentrations. It was suggested that nss [K.sup.+] had two sources: anthropogenic and crustal.

Abstract

Background: Periostin is a matricellular protein and plays a vital role in tissue regeneration, fibrosis and wound healing. However, data about its significance in nephrology are limited. We investigated the correlation between urinary periostin excretion and its clinical significance including renal histologic findings and prognosis in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Methods: Of 399 patients from a glomerulonephritis cohort recruited between January 2009 and December 2014, 314 were enrolled. Serum and urine periostin (uPOSTN) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We divided the patients into 3 groups by uPOSTN/creatinine (uPOSTN/Cr): group 1 (undetectable), group 2 (lower than the median) and group 3 (higher than the median). Results: The uPOSTN level was correlated with pathologic classifications and both initial and final IDMS-MDRD estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs; p < 0.001). Histologically, group 3 patients were correlated with severe interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy (p = 0.004), interstitial inflammation (p = 0.007), hyaline arteriolosclerosis (p = 0.001) and glomerular sclerosis (p < 0.001). A higher initial uPOSTN/Cr level was associated with a greater decline in eGFR during follow-up (p = 0.043 when initial eGFR ≥60; p = 0.025 when eGFR 30% (p = 0.033) and ESRD and/or eGFR decrease of >50% (p = 0.046) occurred significantly more in group 3. In multivariate analysis, uPOSTN group 3 (hazards ratio 2.839, 95% CI 1.013-7.957; p = 0.047) was independently associated with ESRD in IgAN patients. Conclusion: uPOSTN/Cr value at initial diagnosis correlated with renal fibrosis and predicted the renal outcomes in patients with IgAN. It could be a promising urinary biomarker for renal fibrosis.

Abstract

MAS governed solid-state J-coupling based INEPT experiments can detect the through-bond connections of heteronuclei, quadrupolar and spin-1/2 nuclei. The coherence transfer experiments based on heteronuclear J-couplings are easier than the dipolar-based experiments that depend on the degree of reduction or elimination of the averaging effect of MAS on the dipolar coupling.

Abstract

Background Optimum dose ratios of rimabotulinumtoxinB (BTX-B) and onabotulinumtoxinA (BTX-A) have not been determined for forehead wrinkles. Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of BTX-B and BTX-A for the treatment of forehead lines. Methods Twenty-two women (mean age, 40 years) with symmetrical moderate to severe forehead lines were randomized to receive single intramuscular injections of BTX-A and BTX-B on either side of the forehead, at a potency ratio of 1 : 70 or 1 : 100. Subjects were followed-up for 16 weeks. Four physicians evaluated patients' photographs according to the 4-point Facial Wrinkling Grade (FWG). Clinical Improvement Scale (CIS) was calculated by subtracting FWG score at each visit from that at baseline. Patient satisfaction scores and adverse events were also recorded. Results Both BTX-A and BTX-B were effective for the treatment of forehead lines. At both potency ratios, BTX-A had a longer duration of action than BTX-B, while BTX-B led to faster improvement than BTX-A. There was no significant difference in CIS between 700 U and 1000 U BTX-B treatments. Adverse effects were mild and transient. Conclusion Both BTX-A and BTX-B were effective and well tolerated for the treatment of forehead wrinkles at potency ratios of 1 : 70 and 1 : 100. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
