Abstract

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) is a third-generation, storage-ring-based x-ray source that has been operating for more than 13 years and is enjoying a long period of stable, reliable operation. While APS is presently providing state-of-the-art performance to its large user community, we must clearly plan for improvements and upgrades to stay at the forefront scientifically. Significant improvements should be possible through upgrades of beamline optics, detectors, and end-station equipment. In this paper, we discuss the evolutionary changes that are envisioned for the storage ring itself. Among the possibilities are long straight sections, additional straight sections, higher current, short-pulse x-rays, improved insertion devices, and improved beam stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A significant advance in intraundulator electron-beam diagnostics has recently been demonstrated based on coherent optical transition radiation (COTR) imaging. We find signal strengths from a microbunched beam in a UV-visible free-electron laser to be several orders of magnitude higher than that of incoherent optical transition radiation. Abstract

There is a strong desire for short wavelength (down to 1 Å), short pulsewidth (<100 fs), high-brightness, transverse, and longitudinally coherent light pulses for use by the synchrotron radiation community. Much effort is ongoing worldwide to advance this desire both experimentally, in theory and design, and politically. One of the ongoing experimental efforts is the low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). This experiment is based upon the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process, a method to attain a next-generation light source. This presentation gires an overview conceming the history and results of next-generation light sources, the results of the LEUTL SASE FEL, and the description of the upcoming first user experiment on LEUTL. We will also briefly review exotic schemes for future, next-generation light sources based upon FELs including biharmonic undulators and the possibility of interfacing of traditional x-ray lasers with FELs. Abstract

Linearly and circularly polarized x-rays have been very successfully applied to the study of the properties of materials. Many applications can benefit from the availability of energy-tunable, high-brilliance x-ray beams with adjustable polarization properties. A helical undulator that can generate beams of variable (linear to circular) polarization has been designed and built by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics and the Advanced Photon Source. The first harmonic of this 12.8-cm-period device will cover the energy range from 0.4 keV to 3.5 keV. An important feature of this fully electromagnetic device is that it will allow us to generate 100% horizontally (K[sub x]=0) or vertically (K[sub y]=0) plane-polarized radiation, which will enable many experiments otherwise not technically feasible. With symmetric deflection parameters (K[sub x]=K[sub y]), the on-axis radiation will be circularly polarized, with a user-selectable handedness. Abstract

A new gap separation mechanism for use with the standard Advanced Photon Source (APS) 3.3-cm-period undulator magnetic structures has been designed and built, and the first system has been installed in the APS storage ring. The system allows a minimum magnetic gap of 10 mm for use with the APS 8-mm insertion device vacuum chambers. The mechanism is a bolted steel frame structure with a simple 4-motor mechanical drive train.
