This paper describes the preliminary measurements of the temperature field in water channel by the Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (pLIF) method in the one-colour mode using commercial LaVision system. The aim of the work is to find suitable parameters of the experiment (concentration of fluorescent dye, laser power, arrangement of the experiment, etc.) for measuring the temperature field in a closed glass channel of rectangular cross-section with a heated bottom-wall and to verify an applicability of this method in general. The intention is to carry out measurements in the transverse plane of the duct such that the specific thermos-convective structures of the Rayleigh-Bénard-Poiseuille convection, i.e. mixed convection, are detected. For simplicity, the initial measurements were performed in the natural convection regime, i.e. the water in the channel was not driven by the circulation pump. In this case, a larger temperature gradient was created near the wall compared to the force convection case when a cold liquid flows continuously into the experimental area. The presented work serves as a methodological guide for future measurements and provides valuable experience for the design of a new channel for investigation of the thermal flow instabilities.

Abstract Background Platelets play a key role in the natural history of aortic stenosis (AS) and after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). An echo-based staging system stratifies patients with severe AS into 5 groups according to the associated cardiac damage phenotype. We aimed to correlate these AS stages with platelet indices in post-TAVI patients. Methods Patients with severe AS who underwent TAVI and were admitted to intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) were prospectively identified and divided into 5 groups according to extra-valvular cardiac damage [no extravalvular cardiac damage (Stage 0), left ventricular damage (Stage 1), left atrial or mitral valve damage (Stage 2), pulmonary vasculature or tricuspid valve damage (Stage 3), or right ventricular damage (Stage 4)]. Baseline characteristics and complete blood count including mean platelet volume (MPV) and immature platelet fraction (IPF) were collected within 2 h after the procedure and analyzed in relation to aortic stenosis staging. Results A total of 220 patients were included. The mean age was 81 years old and 112 (50.9%) were female. Two (1%) patients were classified in stage 0; 34 (15%) in stage 1; 48 (22%) in stage 2; 49 (22%) in stage 3 and 87 (40%) in stage 4. Higher mean MPV values were correlated with higher AS staging (10.8 fL, 11 fL, 11.3 fL and 10.8 fL in stages 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, P = 0.02) as well as lower hemoglobin values (12 mg/dl, 11.6 mg/dl, 11 mg/dl and 11.3 mg/dl in stages 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively P = 0.04). Mean IPF values were 5.3%, 5.58%, 5.57% and 4.83% in stage 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively (P = 0.4). In a multivariate logistic regression model only MPV (OR = 2.6, P = 0.03) and body mass index (BMI) (OR = 1.17, P = 0.004) were correlated with higher staging (0–3) of AS. Conclusions Although IPF and MPV levels increased in stages 0–3, there was a decrease in indices in stage 4, (probably due to bone marrow dysfunction) in this end-stage population. Higher levels of MPV and lower levels of hemoglobin were independently correlated with higher stages (0–3) of AS.

Abstract Introduction Out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major public health problem with substantial mortality rates worldwide. Genetic diseases and primary electrical disorders are the most common etiologies at younger ages, while ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathies are common causes at older ages. Despite improvement in prevention and treatment in recent years, OHCA is still a major cause of cardiovascular death. Method We report prospective data regarding etiology, characteristics, clinical course, and outcomes of patients with OHCA who were admitted to a tertiary care center intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) between 2020–2023. Results A total of 92 patients admitted after OHCA were included in the cohort. Mean age was 63.8 ± 13.8 years and 75 (82%) were males. The most common etiology of OHCA was acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in 54 (59%) patients, of whom 46 (85%) patients had ST elevation myocardial infarction and 8 (15%) had non-ST elevation myocardial infarction. During hospitalization, 42 (46%) patients underwent targeted temperature management and 13 (14%) received mechanical circulatory support. Interestingly, 77 (84%) patients underwent coronary angiography, while only 51 (55%) received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Neurologic status was favorable in 49 (53%) patients with Cerebral Performance Category score of 1–2. Overall, mortality rates were relatively low, with 15 (16%) in-hospital deaths and 24 (26%) deaths at 30-day follow-up. Conclusion Although ACS was the most common etiology for OHCA, only 55% of patients underwent PCI. Most OHCA patients admitted to the ICCU survived hospitalization and were discharged. Increased awareness, public education, worldwide registries, and specific evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of OHCA patients may lead to improved outcomes for these patients who often carry poor prognoses.

Abstract Background Quantitative transport mapping (QTM) of blood velocity, based on the transport equation has been demonstrated higher accuracy and sensitivity of perfusion quantification than the traditional Kety’s method-based cerebral blood flow (CBF). This study aimed to investigate the associations between QTM velocity and cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using multiple post-labeling delay arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI. Methods A total of 128 subjects (21 normal controls (NC), 80 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 27 AD) were recruited prospectively. All participants underwent MRI examination and neuropsychological evaluation. QTM velocity and traditional CBF maps were computed from multiple delay ASL. Regional quantitative perfusion measurements were performed and compared to study group differences. We tested the hypothesis that cognition declines with reduced cerebral blood perfusion with consideration of age and gender effects. Results In cortical gray matter (GM) and the hippocampus, QTM velocity and CBF showed decreased values in the AD group compared to NC and MCI groups; QTM velocity, but not CBF, showed a significant difference between MCI and NC groups. QTM velocity and CBF showed values decreasing with age; QTM velocity, but not CBF, showed a significant gender difference between male and female. QTM velocity and CBF in the hippocampus were positively correlated with cognition, including global cognition, memory, executive function, and language function. Conclusion This study demonstrated an increased sensitivity of QTM velocity as compared with the traditional Kety’s method-based CBF. Specifically, we observed only in QTM velocity, reduced perfusion velocity in GM and the hippocampus in MCI compared with NC. Both QTM velocity and CBF demonstrated a reduction in AD vs. controls. Decreased QTM velocity and CBF in the hippocampus were correlated with poor cognitive measures. These findings suggest QTM velocity as potential biomarker for early AD blood perfusion alterations and it could provide an avenue for early intervention of AD.

Abstract Introduction Aging is associated with a progressive decline in the capacity for physical activity. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of an intermittent hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) protocol on maximal physical performance and cardiac perfusion in sedentary older adults. Methods A randomized controlled clinical trial randomized 63 adults (> 64yrs) either to HBOT (n = 30) or control arms (n = 33) for three months. Primary endpoint included the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2Max) and VO2Max/Kg, on an E100 cycle ergometer. Secondary endpoints included cardiac perfusion, evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and pulmonary function. The HBOT protocol comprised of 60 sessions administered on a daily basis, for 12 consecutive weeks, breathing 100% oxygen at 2 absolute atmospheres (ATA) for 90 min with 5-minute air breaks every 20 min. Results Following HBOT, improvements were observed in VO2Max/kg, with a significant increase of 1.91 ± 3.29 ml/kg/min indicated by a net effect size of 0.455 (p = 0.0034). Abstract Background Nocardia is an ubiquitous soil organism. As an opportunistic pathogen, inhalation and skin inoculation are the most common routes of infection. Lungs and skin are the most frequent sites of nocardiosis. Testis is a highly unusual location for nocardiosis. Case presentation We report the case of an immunocompromised 75-year-old-man admitted for fever of unknown origin. He presented with skin lesions after gardening and was first suspected of Mediterranean spotted fever, but he did not respond to doxycycline. Then, physical examination revealed new left scrotal swelling that was compatible with a diagnosis of epididymo-orchitis. The patient’s condition did not improve despite empirical antibiotic treatment with the onset of necrotic scrotal abscesses requiring surgery. Nocardia brasiliensis yielded from the removed testis culture. High-dose trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ceftriaxone were started. Multiple micro-abscesses were found in the brain and spinal cord on imaging studies. After 6 weeks of dual antibiotic therapy for disseminated nocardiosis, slight regression of the brain abscesses was observed. The patient was discharged after a 6-month course of antibiotics and remained relapse-free at that time of writing these lines. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole alone is meant to be pursued for 6 months thereafter. We undertook a literature review on previously reported cases of genitourinary and urological nocardiosis; to date, only 36 cases have been published with predominately involvement of kidney, prostate and testis. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Nocardia brasiliensis simultaneously infecting skin, testis, brain and spinal cord in an immunocompromised patient. Knowledge on uncommon forms of nocardiosis remains scarce. This case report highlights the difficulty of diagnosing atypical nocardiosis and the importance of prompt bacteriological sampling in case of empirical antibiotics failure.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a highly aggressive neoplasm of the surface epithelium that arises from the mucosal lining of the mouth. The poor prognosis can be attributed to the complex tumor microenvironment (TME) in OSCC, which is crucial for tumor progression, angiogenesis, invasion, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models have emerged as powerful tools to study OSCC biology and evaluate targeted therapies in a more physiologically relevant context. Advanced models such as tumor spheroids, patient organoids and microfluidic devices offer unique possibilities to reconstitute intricate cellular interactions, ECM dynamics as well as physiological gradients found in the OSCC TME. The 3D OSCC model provides powerful preclinical tools for drug screening and mechanistic studies of this devastating malignancy. In this review, we discuss the role of the tumor-immune microenvironment (TIME) in tumorigenesis and the 3D in vitro cultures in recreating the tumor microenvironment paving the way for the development of personalized medicine in OSCC.

Abstract Background An elevated neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in blood has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, an elevated NLR has also been implicated in many other conditions that are risk factors for AD, prompting investigation into whether the NLR is directly linked with AD pathology or a result of underlying comorbidities. Herein, we explored the relationship between the NLR and AD biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of cognitively unimpaired (CU) subjects. Adjusting for sociodemographics, APOE4, and common comorbidities, we investigated these associations in two cohorts: the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and the M.J. de Leon CSF repository at NYU. Specifically, we examined associations between the NLR and cross-sectional measures of amyloid-β42 (Aβ42), total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau181 (p-tau), as well as the trajectories of these CSF measures obtained longitudinally. Brain fluid clearance by pathways including the recently described paravascular glymphatic system is a critical homeostatic mechanism by which metabolic products, toxins, and other wastes are removed from the brain. Brain fluid clearance may be especially important after traumatic brain injury (TBI), when blood, neuronal debris, inflammatory cells, and other substances can be released and/or deposited. Using a non-invasive dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) method that models the rate at which an intravenously injected radiolabeled molecule (in this case 11C-flumazenil) is cleared from ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), we estimated the overall efficiency of brain fluid clearance in humans who had experienced complicated-mild or moderate TBI 3?6 months before neuroimaging (n?=?7) as compared to healthy controls (n?=?9). While there was no significant difference in ventricular clearance between TBI subjects and controls, there was a significant group difference in dependence of ventricular clearance upon tracer delivery/blood flow to the ventricles. Specifically, in controls, ventricular clearance was highly, linearly dependent upon blood flow to the ventricle, but this relation was disrupted in TBI subjects. When accounting for blood flow and group-specific alterations in blood flow, ventricular clearance was slightly (non-significantly) increased in TBI subjects as compared to controls. Current results contrast with past studies showing reduced glymphatic function after TBI and are consistent with possible differential effects of TBI on glymphatic versus non-glymphatic clearance mechanisms. Further study using multi-modal methods capable of assessing and disentangling blood flow and different aspects of fluid clearance is needed to clarify clearance alterations after TBI.

Abstract Background Reduced clearance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been suggested as a pathological feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). With extensive documentation in non-human mammals and contradictory human neuroimaging data it remains unknown whether the nasal mucosa is a CSF drainage site in humans. Here, we used dynamic PET with [1-11C]-Butanol, a highly permeable radiotracer with no appreciable brain binding, to test the hypothesis that tracer drainage from the nasal pathway reflects CSF drainage from brain. As a test of the hypothesis, we examined whether brain and nasal fluid drainage times were correlated and affected by brain amyloid. Methods 24 cognitively normal subjects (≥ 65 years) were dynamically PET imaged for 60 min. using [1-11C]-Butanol. Imaging with either [11C]-PiB or [18F]-FBB identified 8 amyloid PET positive (Aβ+) and 16 Aβ- subjects. MRI-determined regions of interest (ROI) included: the carotid artery, the lateral orbitofrontal (LOF) brain, the cribriform plate, and an All-turbinate region comprised of the superior, middle, and inferior turbinates. The bilateral temporalis muscle and jugular veins served as control regions. Regional time-activity were used to model tracer influx, egress, and AUC. Results LOF and All-turbinate 60 min AUC were positively associated, thus suggesting a connection between the brain and the nose. Further, the Aβ+ subgroup demonstrated impaired tracer kinetics, marked by reduced tracer influx and slower egress. Conclusion The data show that tracer kinetics for brain and nasal turbinates are related to each other and both reflect the amyloid status of the brain. As such, these data add to evidence that the nasal pathway is a potential CSF drainage site in humans. These data warrant further investigation of brain and nasal contributions to protein clearance in neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract Aims Acute mitral regurgitation (MR) in the setting of myocardial infarction (MI) may be the result of papillary muscle rupture (PMR). This condition is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We aim to evaluate the feasibility of transcatheter edge‐to‐edge mitral valve repair (TEER) in this acute setting. Methods and results We analysed data from the International Registry of MitraClip in Acute Mitral Regurgitation following acute Myocardial Infarction (IREMMI) of 30 centres in Europe, North America, and the middle east. We included patients with post‐MI PMR treated with TEER as a salvage procedure, and we evaluated immediate and 30‐day outcomes. Twenty‐three patients were included in this analysis (9 patients suffered complete papillary muscle rupture, 9 partial and 5 chordal rupture). The patients' mean age was 68 ± 14 years. Patients were at high surgical risk with median EuroSCORE II 27% (IQR 16, 28) and 20 out of 23 (87% were in cardiogenic shock). All patients were treated with vasopressors, and 17 out of 23 patients required mechanical support. TEER procedure was performed on the median 6 days after the index MI date IQR (3, 11). Procedural success was achieved in 87% of patients. The grade of MR was significantly decreased after the procedure. Medicinal plants are a major source of numerous therapeutic agents, and the emergence of pathogenic bacteria has rekindled interest in traditional medicine systems as an alternative approach to overcoming resistance. The dried plant material of four medicinal plants, namely Terminalia arjuna (bark), Terminalia bellirica (fruit), Aegle marmelos (leaves), and Bacopa monnieri (leaves), was powdered, and aqueous extracts were prepared. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated against three clinically important strains: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli 385. As E. coli 385 was resistant to the broadest spectrum of antibiotics tested, it was classified as (MDR multi-drug resistant). E. coli, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium smegmatis (MTTC), and Vibrio alginolyticus (ATCC) were also assessed using the agar well diffusion method for zones of inhibition and minimum inhibitory/bactericidal concentration (MIC/MBC). Clinically important strains were found to be sensitive to the aqueous extract of T. bellerica (19.51 ± 0.61 mm) with MICs ranging from 0.31 to 0.62 mg/ml. The MDR strain was also sensitive to Bellirica monnieri (16.10 ± 0.31 mm) aqueous extract. To determine the potential for a wide range of applications, the antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays. The T. arjuna plant extract exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity with the lowest EC50 values for DPPH (1.15 ± 0.061 mg/ml) and ABTS (1.02 ± 0.07 mg/ml). The plant extracts were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and LC-MS/MS.

Hypertrophic scarring (HTS) is an aberrant form of wound healing that is associated with excessive deposition of extracellular matrix and connective tissue at the site of injury. In this review article, we provide an overview of normal (acute) wound healing phases (hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling). We next discuss the dysregulated and/or impaired mechanisms in wound healing phases that are associated with HTS development. We next discuss the animal models of HTS and their limitations, and review the current and emerging treatments of HTS.

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography (PET) has had a transformative impact on oncological and neurological applications. However, still much of PETs potential remains untapped with limitations primarily driven by low spatial resolution, which severely hampers accurate quantitative PET imaging via the partial volume effect (PVE). PURPOSE: We present experimental results of a practical and cost-effective ultra-high resolution brain-dedicated PET scanner, using our depth-encoding Prism-PET detectors arranged along a compact and conformal gantry, showing substantial reduction in PVE and accurate radiotracer uptake quantification in small regions. METHODS: The decagon-shaped prototype scanner has a long diameter of 38.5 cm, a short diameter of 29.1 cm, and an axial field-of-view (FOV) of 25.5 mm with a single ring of 40 Prism-PET detector modules. Each module comprises a 16 × 16 array of 1.5 × 1.5 × 20-mm3 lutetium yttrium oxyorthosillicate (LYSO) scintillator crystals coupled 4-to-1 to an 8 × 8 array of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixels on one end and to a prismatoid light guide array on the opposite end. The scanners performance was evaluated by measuring depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution, energy resolution, timing resolution, spatial resolution, sensitivity, and image quality of ultra-micro Derenzo and three-dimensional (3D) Hoffman brain phantoms. RESULTS: The full width at half maximum (FWHM) DOI, energy, and timing resolutions of the scanner are 2.85 mm, 12.6%, and 271 ps, respectively. Not considering artifacts due to mechanical misalignment of detector blocks, the intrinsic spatial resolution is 0.89-mm FWHM. Point source images reconstructed with 3D filtered back-projection (FBP) show an average spatial resolution of 1.53-mm FWHM across the entire FOV. The peak absolute sensitivity is 1.2% for an energy window of 400-650 keV. The ultra-micro Derenzo phantom study demonstrates the highest reported spatial resolution performance for a human brain PET scanner with perfect reconstruction of 1.00-mm diameter hot-rods. Reconstructed images of customized Hoffman brain phantoms prove that Prism-PET enables accurate radiotracer uptake quantification in small brain regions (2-3 mm). CONCLUSIONS: Prism-PET will substantially strengthen the utility of quantitative PET in neurology for early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, and in neuro-oncology for improved management of both primary and metastatic brain tumors.

ABSTRACT: Purpose: The pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid, tau, and associated neurodegeneration, are present in the cortical gray matter (GM) years before symptom onset, and at significantly greater levels in carriers of the apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) allele. Their respective biomarkers, A/T/N, have been found to correlate with aspects of brain biochemistry, measured with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), indicating a potential for MRS to augment the A/T/N framework for staging and prediction of AD. Unfortunately, the relationships between MRS and A/T/N biomarkers are unclear, largely due to a lack of studies examining them in the context of the spatial and temporal model of T/N progression. Advanced MRS acquisition and post-processing approaches have enabled us to address this knowledge gap and test the hypotheses, that glutamate-plus-glutamine (Glx) and N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), metabolites reflecting synaptic and neuronal health, respectively, measured from regions on the Braak stage continuum, correlate with: (i) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) p-tau181 level (T), and (ii) hippocampal volume or cortical thickness of parietal lobe GM (N). We hypothesized that these correlations will be moderated by Braak stage and APOE4 genotype. Methods: We conducted a retrospective imaging study of 34 cognitively unimpaired elderly individuals who received APOE4 genotyping and lumbar puncture from pre-existing prospective studies at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine between October 2014 and January 2019. Subjects returned for their imaging exam between April 2018 and February 2020. Metabolites were measured from the left hippocampus (Braak II) using a single-voxel semi-adiabatic localization by adiabatic selective refocusing sequence; and from the bilateral posterior cingulate cortex (PCC; Braak IV), bilateral precuneus (Braak V), and bilateral precentral gyrus (Braak VI) using a multi-voxel echo-planar spectroscopic imaging sequence. Pearson and Spearman correlations were used to examine the relationships between absolute levels of choline, creatine, myo-inositol, Glx, and NAA and CSF p-tau181, and between these metabolites and hippocampal volume or parietal cortical thicknesses. Covariates included age, sex, years of education, Fazekas score, and months between CSF collection and MRI exam. Results: There was a direct correlation between hippocampal Glx and CSF p-tau181 in APOE4 carriers (Pearson's r = 0.76, p = 0.02), but not after adjusting for covariates. In the entire cohort, there was a direct correlation between hippocampal NAA and hippocampal volume (Spearman's r = 0.55, p = 0.001), even after adjusting for age and Fazekas score (Spearman's r = 0.48, p = 0.006). This relationship was observed only in APOE4 carriers (Pearson's r = 0.66, p = 0.017), and was also retained after adjustment (Pearson's r = 0.76, p = 0.008; metabolite-by-carrier interaction p = 0.03). There were no findings in the PCC, nor in the negative control (late Braak stage) regions of the precuneus and precentral gyrus. Conclusions: Our findings are in line with the spatially- and temporally-resolved Braak staging model of pathological severity in which the hippocampus is affected earlier than the PCC. The correlations, between MRS markers of synaptic and neuronal health and, respectively, T and N pathology, were found exclusively within APOE4 carriers, suggesting a connection with AD pathological change, rather than with normal aging. We therefore conclude that MRS has the potential to augment early A/T/N staging, with the hippocampus serving as a more sensitive MRS target compared to the PCC.

Background: Patients undergoing hemodialysis are at high risk for healthcare-associated infections; they are at 100 times the risk of Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections (BSI) compared with U.S. adults not on hemodialysis. Prior studies found that nasal decolonization with mupirocin prevented S. aureus BSI among hemodialysis patients. We implemented a nasal decolonization intervention in which patients self-administered povidone-iodine (PVI) at each dialysis session. We aimed to assess: 1) hemodialysis patients’ knowledge of their infection risk and their willingness to take an active role in infection prevention; 2) the acceptability of the PVI nasal decolonization intervention. Methods: We performed a stepped wedge cluster randomized trial at 16 outpatient hemodialysis centers. Patients were surveyed: before starting PVI, 1 month after their center started using PVI, and ~6 months after starting PVI. We used a chi-square test to compare results. Results: 469 patients completed at least 1 survey: 400 pre-intervention, 237 at 1 month and 201 at 6 months. Overall, 56% of patients thought that their risk of infection was average or below average compared with an average person in the U.S. (Figure). Over 98% agreed with the statement “One of the most important things I can do for my health is to take an active role in my health care." In the pre-intervention survey, 73% were willing to do “a lot of effort” to prevent an infection. This proportion was similar (73%) in the 2nd survey, but decreased to 63% in the final survey (p < 0 .01). Among 106 patients who reported starting PVI, 85% reported that PVI felt neutral or pleasant, 9.4% reported a side effect, and 79% reported using it during the past 3 dialysis sessions. Among 102 patients who reported using PVI at 6 months, 87% said it felt neutral/pleasant, 3.9% reported a side effect and 75% reported using it during the past 3 dialysis sessions. Side effects included nasal dripping, congestion or burning/stinging, unpleasant smell, headache, yellow tears, and minor nose bleeding. Conclusions: Hemodialysis patients are not aware of their high risk of infection. Although many were willing to expend a lot of effort to prevent an infection, this willingness decreased during an infection prevention intervention. There were few PVI side effects and most patients stated that PVI felt neutral/pleasant, yet many patients chose to not use PVI. Future research should aim to improve patient education on their risk of infection and assess barriers to adherence with infection prevention interventions.

The article focuses on the Hebrew prototypes terms (PTs) of white in the Old Testament – light, milk, and snow. The aim is to explore the worldview of Hebrew to reveal the original messages of the Bible. The translation is an essential tool that shows which translation elements (the word and its root derivatives) are symmetrical, asymmetric, and dissymmetric to Hebrew due to the different worldviews of languages. The method is interdisciplinary and includes several theories and approaches. Original is Almalech’s methodology for tracking all verbal options to signify color: Basic color term (BCT), prototype term (PT), rival terms to prototype (RT), and terms for the basic feature of the prototype (TBFP). Semiotic osmosis is also an original element of Almalech’s methodology and has a place in the study of colors in the Bible. The phenomenon is observed when Hebrew PT is translated with the BCT, Hebrew TBFP is translated with BCT in the Indo-European language, e.g., darkness is translated with black, fresh is translated with green. In the case of light, semiotic osmosis is when a quality of light is perceived as synonymous with light, e.g., brilliance is synonymous with light in Hebrew, English, Bulgarian, and other languages. The importance of light in religious systems, regional culture, and natural features are taken into account. Almalech’s semiotic approach to color, i.e., treating them as a sign communication system, involves the insisting that a distinction must be made between verbal and visual color because of their different potential to have primary and secondary (figurative and cultural) meanings. The substance of the language sign (sound is a mechanical wave) is physically different from the visual sign (electromagnetic wave). Almalech considered prototypes to be the cognitive interface between verbal and visual colors. Therefore, semiotically understood, color is a cultural unit that contains verbal and visual colors, complemented by social, religious, and folkloric use of primary and secondary color meanings.

Cynanchum auriculatum Royle ex Wight (CA) is a traditional medicinal and edible plant in China. This study aimed to isolate and characterize the phenolic compounds of C. auriculatum to identify its main antioxidant constituents. Polyphenols were extracted using an ultrasound-assisted ethanol extraction method, followed by partitioning with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate extract was then purified through thin-layer chromatography, silica gel column chromatography, and reverse-phase silica gel column chromatography. Three monomeric compounds—cynandione A (I), 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone (II), and radix piperacanthone (III)—were identified through their physical and chemical properties, UV and IR spectra, and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Vitamin C (VC) and 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone were used as controls to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the two most abundant monomers. Antioxidant assays demonstrated that 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone and cynandione A exhibited strong antioxidant activity at lower concentrations, whereas 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone showed significantly weaker activity. Furthermore, cynandione A displayed superior cellular antioxidant activity compared to 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone, indicating its potential as a promising bioactive compound. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the phenolic composition of C. auriculatum and highlights cynandione A as a key antioxidant, paving the way for future research on its therapeutic applications.

This study develops a hybrid machine learning (ML) algorithm integrated with IoT technology to improve the accuracy and efficiency of soil monitoring and tomato crop disease prediction in Anakapalle, a south Indian station. An IoT device collected one-minute and critical soil parameters—humidity, temperature, pH values, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), during the vegetative growth stage, which are essential for assessing soil health and optimizing crop growth. Kendall’s correlations were computed to rank these parameters for utilization in hybrid ML techniques. Various ML algorithms including K-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and logistic regression (LR) were evaluated. A novel hybrid algorithm, ‘Bayesian optimization with KNN’, was introduced to combine multiple ML techniques and enhance predictive performance. The hybrid algorithm demonstrated superior results with 95% accuracy, precision, and recall, and an F1 score of 94%, while individual ML algorithms achieved varying results: KNN (80% accuracy), SVM (82%), DT (77%), RF (80%), and LR (81%) with differing precision, recall, and F1 scores. This hybrid ML approach proved highly effective in predicting tomato crop diseases in natural environments, underscoring the synergistic benefits of IoT and advanced ML techniques in optimizing agricultural practices.

Background With over 100 million Indians living in urban slums and high child mortality among low-income groups, focusing on maternal and child health (MCH) among urban underprivileged is vital, if India is to achieve the fourth and fifth Millennium Development goals. Objectives To identify the gaps in the MCH Continuum of care, by assessing coverage and quality of Maternal and Child Health Services in an urban underprivileged area of Bangalore City. Methods A survey was conducted in an urban slum of Bangalore City, using systematic random sampling. A total of 178 subjects were interviewed with a pre-tested questionnaire. 88 were mothers who delivered in the last one year (to assess maternal care services), and 90 were mothers of a child aged 12-23 months (to assess immunization coverage). Breastfeeding practices and care during childhood illness were documented in both groups. Results Though institutional delivery rate was 97.7%, only 34.1% mothers had received full antenatal care. The quality of antenatal and postnatal services was poor, practices like prelacteal feeds and delayed initiation of breastfeeding were common. Less than 40 % of children were exclusively breastfed for at least 6 months. Only 53% of children aged 12-23 months were fully immunised. Primary immunisation drop-out rates were high. Mothers’ knowledge regarding vaccines was poor. Children with diarrhea received less fluids and food and only 61% received ORS. Conclusion This study identified the following gaps in the MCH Continuum of Care- lack of IFA consumption, poor quality of antenatal and postnatal care, high immunisation dropout rates, erroneous breastfeeding practices and inadequate care during diarrhoea. Further research may identify potential solutions to bridging these gaps in MCH care.

Particulate matter (PM), released into the air by a variety of natural and human activities, is a key indicator of air pollution. Although PM is known as the extensive health hazard to affect a variety of illness, few studies have specifically investigated the effects of PM10 exposure on schizophrenic development. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the impact of PM10 on MK-801, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, induced schizophrenia-like behaviors in C57BL/6 mouse. Preadolescent mice were exposed PM10 to 3.2 mg/m3 concentration for 4 h/day for 2 weeks through a compartmentalized whole-body inhalation chamber. After PM10 exposure, we conducted behavioral tests during adolescence and adulthood to investigate longitudinal development of schizophrenia. We found that PM10 exacerbated schizophrenia-like behavior, such as psychomotor agitation, social interaction deficits and cognitive deficits at adulthood in MK-801-induced schizophrenia animal model. Furthermore, the reduced expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the phosphorylation of BDNF related signaling molecules, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), were exacerbated by PM10 exposure in the adult hippocampus of MK-801-treated mice. Thus, our present study demonstrates that exposure to PM10 in preadolescence exacerbates the cognitive impairment in animal model of schizophrenia, which are considered to be facilitated by the decreased level of BDNF through reduced ERK-CREB expression.
