In a very general quasilinear setting, we show that the regularizing effect of a first order term causes the existence of energy solutions for problems involving the Hardy potential and $L^1$ data. In the same setting we study sharp (local and global) integral estimates for the second derivatives of the solutions.

Abstract

Olive oil is one of the main products from the Central-Western Region of Argentine Republic, which is mostly obtained by continuous two-phase centrifugation systems. Two-phase-olive-mill-waste (TPOMW) or Alperujo is the main waste generated by this process. This research was conducted in order to give value to this waste by producing hydrochar and phenolic antioxidant compounds, products of great interest today. For this, the hydrothermal carbonization process was applied, an effective technique to synthesize a broad range of carbon-rich materials. In this study the extraction of typical phenolic compounds of the olive from the liquid phase generated in this process was also analyzed. Box Benhken response surface method was applied to obtain the optimal values of the operating conditions of the process and the selected response variables: higher heating value of the hydrochar (HHV) and content of total phenol concentration (TPC) in the liquors. Values of 31.70 MJ.kg and 4429 mL.g were obtained, respectively. Effectiveness of hydrothermal carbonization for hydrochar was evidenced, achieving 70% increases in the value of HHV and 40% of carbon concentration, compared to raw alperujo. In addition, values of 1.36 and 0.17 were obtained for the H/C and O/C ratios, respectively, and energy yield of 85%. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, showed their potential application as adsorbent precursor. In the liquid fraction obtained, phenols could be extracted in attractive concentrations, increasing the content of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol 3 and 9 times with respect to the untreated alperujo, respectively.

Abstract

We consider weak distributional solutions to the equation -Δpu = f (u) in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We assume that the nonlinearity is positive and superlinear at zero. For p > 2 (the case 1 < p < 2 is already known) we prove that any positive solution is strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary of the half-space. As a consequence we deduce some Liouville-type theorems for the Lane-Emden-type equation. Abstract

We have investigated the crystalline configuration of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) grown on hydrogen passivated Si(111) substrates by hot wall epitaxy. Coplanar and grazing incidence diffraction were used for determination of dot strain state and the vertical and lateral dimensions of the crystalline domain. A change in aspect ratio was observed as a function of dot size. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that despite a mismatch of almost 20% the islands grow with a fairly good epitaxial orientation with respect to the Si(111) substrate. The dot mosaicity was also determined and was found to decrease with island size from 7° to about 4° for the samples studied, indicating an improvement in epitaxial quality even before the island coalescence. Careful observation of [formula] reflections in an azimuthal scan showed that an additional ensemble of islands is responsible for low-intensity peaks with a 30° symmetry besides the expected 60° symmetry. Transmission electron microscopy results have shown good accordance with atomic force microscopy and XRD and revealed the presence of an amorphous Tellurium rich oxide layer at the CdTe/Si interface, which could explain the fully unstrained QD state observed. Si bien existe una tradición española en la aplicación de los conocimientos psicológicos a la prevención de accidentes de circulación, que arranca desde la década de 1920, no se convirtió en un fenómeno de masas hasta mediados de los años 80 cuando, al extenderse desde los conductores profesionales a todos los conductores, llegó a un número creciente de españolas y españoles. Esta acción preventiva, que fue el primer rol profesional de intervención psicológica legalmente regulado en España, definido incluso antes de la existencia formal de una auténtica práctica académica en Psicología, es hoy una destacada fuente de empleo para los titulados en psicología y goza de plena actualidad, como demuestra su reciente inclusión dentro del sistema de permiso por puntos. Los protagonistas de la historia fueron, primero, los psicotécnicos en Centros públicos evaluando conductores profesionales, y luego los psicólogos en Centros privados explorando a todos los aspirantes a obtener o renovar los permisos. La selección ha sido el hilo conector de lo que ha dado en llamarse el "Modelo Español" de Seguridad Vial. Se puede establecer varias etapas en el desarrollo del mencionado modelo, coincidentes en una gran parte con el desarrollo y consolidación de una Ciencia Psicológica española autónoma y con los cambios de paradigmas y tecnologías. El actual Reglamento General de Conductores mantiene el mismo patrón preventivo legalizado en 1934. Tras casi 100 años de vida y 25 de acción sobre masas, cabía preguntarse por su validez y utilidad, y eso es precisamente, apoyándose en datos empíricos, lo que pretende contestar este artículo. It is appropriate to talk about a Spanish tradition in the application of psychology to traffic accidents prevention, dating back to the 1920s. It was the first professional area of psychological intervention to be legally regulated in Spain, even before the formal existence of an epistemic practice in psychology. From the 1930s on, without any interruption, there has been a prevailing preventive model, in spite of the different political regimes that have governed in Spain. First the psychotechnicians in public centres assessing professional drivers, and later the psychologists in private centres with all drivers have been the protagonists in the story, the connecting thread being what has been called the Spanish Model of drivers assessment. We can establish various different steps in the development of the Spanish Model in Psychological Assessment of Drivers, in a big part coincident with the evolution of the Psychological Science and the Spanish psychology. The current "Reglamento General de Conductores", who regulate driving licence, required from all of candidates to obtain/renewal driving licence submitted to physical and psychological examination in private centres to obtain driving licence. Also, this examination is required to those drivers who have lost their licence as a consequence of the penalty point system and are trying to recover it. The "Reglamento General de Conductores" maintained psychological test and a preventive pattern, legalized at 1934. We offered an empirical analysis of its activity and the validity of the professional intervention in its different dimensions. The selection of drivers has played a key role in the building of Modern professional Spanish psychology, and is today the oldest living representative role in the field.

Abstract

Objetivos, análisis de los aspectos considerados en la valoración de las aptitudes perceptivo- motoras y la inteligencia según el Modelo Español de reconocimiento de conductores. Material y Métodos, mediante la observación de variables analizadas en las normativas aplicadas desde que se inicia la locomoción en España y los protocolos actuales de valoración recomendados por la Dirección General de Tráfico y El Ministerio de Sanidad. Conclusiones, las variables consideradas han servido a los modelos preventivos de cada época, actualmente pretenden atender a las necesidades de prevención de los hábitos sociales actuales. Los aspectos valorados, apenas han sufrido variaciones, en los últimos años. El sistema de evaluación y registro de datos evolucionó con la normalización de los aparatos psicotécnicos en 1988, permaneciendo sin modificaciones hasta la actualidad. La actuación protocolizada es sin duda un sistema eficaz para determinar la actitud para conducir. The evaluated aspects have hardly changed in the last few years. The evaluation system and data collection have being developed with the standardisation of psycotechnical devices in 1988. Remaining unchanged until the present. The protocolized intervention is without question an effective system to determine the driving attitude.

Abstract

Aim To evaluate the effects of infrared light-emitting diode ( LED) irradiation on stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth ( SHEDs). Methodology Exfoliated primary teeth were obtained ( n = 3), and SHEDs obtained from the teeth were seeded on the pulpal surface of 0.2-mm-thick dentine discs produced from permanent molars. The cells were incubated for 24 h by placing the discs in plain Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium ( DMEM). The DMEM was then replaced with new culture medium formulated for odontoblast differentiation. After 12 h in the second medium, SHEDs were irradiated through the dentine discs using an infrared LED (850 nm) with a power density of 80 mW cm−2. Energy doses (EDs) delivered to the occlusal surface of the dentine discs were 0 (control), 2 and 4 J cm−2 ( n = 6). Subsequent tests were performed 72 h after irradiation. These tests included cell viability ( MTT), alkaline phosphatase activity ( ALP), total protein production ( TP), scanning electron microscopy ( SEM), as well as gene expression for ALP, Col I, DSPP and DMP-1. Data were analysed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney t-tests (α = 0.05). Results Both EDs (2 and 4 J cm−2) significantly increased cell viability and ALP activity. For TP, ALP and Col I gene expression, only the 4 J cm−2 group had significantly higher values compared to the control group. Cell morphology was not affected by irradiation. Conclusion Infrared LED irradiation was capable of biostimulating SHEDs through a 0.2 mm thickness of dentine, especially at the 4 J cm−2 level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

For axially symmetric domains we prove that, under suitable assumptions, there exist mountain-pass solutions which exhibit partial symmetry. Furthermore, we show that semi-stable or non-degenerate smooth solutions need to be radially symmetric in the ball.
