Introduction: Few validated tools exist in Spanish for conducting a precise assessment of the cognitive functioning of persons with advanced dementia. This population is a challenge due to the large number of persons who reach these states and owing to the complexity of the care that they require. This study presents a validated Spanish version of an instrument, the Severe Cognitive Impairment Profile (SCIP), which allows assessment of the cognitive functioning of persons with advanced Alzheimer's disease., Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 133 subjects (29 males and 104 females; mean age: 81.61 ± 7.41 years) diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in moderate to very severe stages, according to the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS 5-7). The following were performed: discrimination analyses of the items, a study of the internal consistency and interrater reliability and test-retest. Likewise, the factorial structure and the validity of the instrument were also tested., Results: Only 1% of the 160 items on the scale were found to be non-discriminatory. The internal consistency of the scale is adequate, as is the interrater and the test-retest reliability. As regards the validity of the construct, the correlation with the mini-mental state examination is 0.74 (p < 0.01) and significant differences are found between the SCIP and the three levels of the GDS that were analysed. The factorial structure of the scales shows the existence of a single factor that accounts for 66.12% of the variance., Conclusions: The SCIP scale is a useful, reliable and valid instrument for the exhaustive evaluation in Spanish of the cognitive functions of persons with dementia in moderate to very severe states.

Introduction: People with progressive dementia evolve into a state where traditional neuropsychological tests are not effective. Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) and short form (SIB-s) were developed for evaluating the cognitive status in patients with severe dementia., Aim: To evaluate the psychometric attributes of the SIB-s in patients with severe dementia., Patients and Methods: 127 institutionalized patients (female: 86.6%; mean age: 82.6 ± 7.5 years-old) with dementia were assessed with the SIB-s, the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Severe Mini-Mental State Examination (sMMSE), Barthel Index and FAST., Results: SIB-s acceptability, reliability, validity and precision were analyzed. The mean total score for scale was 19.1 ± 15.34 (range: 0-48). Floor effect was 18.1%, only marginally higher than the desirable 15%. Factor analysis identified a single factor explaining 68% of the total variance of the scale. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.96 and the item-total corrected correlation ranged from 0.27 to 0.83. The item homogeneity value was 0.43. Test-retest and inter-rater reliability for the total score was satisfactory (ICC: 0.96 and 0.95, respectively). The SIB-s showed moderate correlation with functional dependency scales (Barthel Index: 0.48, FAST: -0.74). Standard error of measurement was 3.07 for the total score., Conclusions: The SIB-s is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating patients with severe dementia in the Spanish population of relatively brief instruments.

The studies focused on age-related differences in emotional experience are still scarce, and most of them have been conducted with North-American samples. This study explores the presence of age-related differences in some facets of emotional experience (subjective well-being and emotional intensity), as well as in variables related to emotion regulation (subjective emotional control and three emotion-regulation mechanisms: situation selection, emotion suppression, rumination) in the Spanish population. One hundred and sixty people from three age groups (younger, middle-aged and older adults) participated in the study. Older participants reported lower levels of life satisfaction and positive emotional intensity than younger ones, as well as higher levels of perceived emotional control, emotional maturity and leveling of positive affect, and more use of emotion suppression. The results partially support the emotional maturity hypothesis of emotional functioning in old age, but also suggest that older adults' emotional regulation may present important peculiarities which have not yet been addressed in the extant literature, such as the moderation or limitation of emotional experience, especially positive emotions.

Introduction and Objectives: The aim of this work is to compare the effectiveness of two psychoeducational interventions for dementia caregivers: a cognitive behavioral one (PCC), aimed at the modification of dysfunctional thoughts about caregiving, and another one consisting in problem solving skills training (PSP) for caregivers, with the aim of modifying the behavioral problems of their relative., Subjects and Methods: Seventy five caregivers were asked to participate in an intervention program, of whom 31 finally completed the study. Both group interventions are compared with a control group (CG). The caregiver groups were randomly assigned to each experimental condition. Pre, post intervention, and follow up assessments of the following variables have been made: depression, perceived stress, frequency of behavioral problems, perceived stress associated with the behavioral problems and dysfunctional thoughts about caregiving., Results: Following the intervention, caregivers in the PCC program show significantly less perceived stress than the other two groups. In the same direction, a trend exists to a significant reduction of the stress associated with the behavioral problems. In the follow up assessment, caregivers of the PCC program significantly report less relative's behavioral problems than the other two groups. Caregivers of the PCC program have less dysfunctional thoughts than the other two groups, differences almost reaching significance., Conclusions: Benefits of a psychoeducational intervention vary as a function of the contents it includes. The importance of intervening on the caregiver dysfunctional thoughts for an adequate coping with caregiving is highlighted.

Extensive prior research has indicated that sexual assault is highly prevalent among American college students. The purpose of this study was to assess Spanish students' attitudes about forced sex and actual experiences with male-against-female sexual aggression (SA) at a major university campus. A date-rape story was presented whereupon students (N = 412) indicated the extent to which they thought forced sex was acceptable or unacceptable in ten hypothetical situations (Giarusso, Johnson, Goodchilds, & Zellman, 1979). A second section examined whether a female or male Spanish student had experienced or engaged in a broad range of coercive sexual activities (Koss & Oros, 1982). A third section elicited help-seeking behavior in those cases where a female student had experienced unwanted sexual activity (Ogletree, 1993). It was hypothesized that students would differ in their acceptance of forced sex as a function of sex, branch and year of study, and actual experience with SA. Results showed that acceptance of forced sex was significantly related to sex, year of study and experience with SA. Results also revealed that 17.5% of all male students (n = 189) accepted forced sex and 33.2% of all female students (n = 223) had experienced some form of unwanted sexual activity; 7.7% of the women had experienced attempted or completed rape. Only 39% of those women victimized sought any form of help. The implications of these findings for rape-prevention programs are discussed.
