Quantum Physics - Abstract
Previous studies of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons showed the quantization of energy levels, and confirmed quantum mechanical predictions for the average size of the two lowest energy states wave functions. Improvements in position-like measurements can increase the accuracy by an order of magnitude only. We therefore develop another approach, consisting in accurate measurements of the energy levels. The GRANIT experiment is devoted to the study of resonant transitions between quantum states induced by an oscillating perturbation. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty relations, the accuracy of measurement of the energy levels is limited by the time available to perform the transitions. Thus, trapping quantum states will be necessary, and each source of losses has to be controlled in order to maximize the lifetime of the states. International audience; Volcanoes in the Caribbean often host extremely developed hydrothermal systems. These result from the interaction of large amount of water, infiltered in the system thanks to strong precipitation regimes, with the magmatic gases and liquids rising from the magmatic chamber. Volcanic hydrothermal systems give rise to unpredictable hazards such as hydrothermal explosions, partial edifice collapse, mudflows and sudden emission of toxic gases. Characterizing the dynamics of these systems is thus critical for developing efficient risk assessment.At La Soufriere de Guadeloupe volcano, a pioneer network of muon telescopes has been installed to assess the potential of this technology to monitor the volcano's dynamic hydrothermal system. Muon imaging has emerged as a powerful method to complement standard geophysical methods in volcanology. Muon measurements yield a radiography of the average density along the muon path, allowing to image large volumes of a geological body from a single observation point. When multiple muon detectors surrounding the volcano are available, it is possible to invert these data to retrieve the 3-D density distribution in the volcano. Long-term measurements of the muon flux allow to infer density changes in the system. In the context of volcanic hydrothermal systems, this approach helps to characterize zones of steam formation, condensation, water infiltration and storage.Here we present the use of continuous muon measurements at La Soufrière de Guadeloupe volcano as a novel methodology to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of its hydrothermal system. In this work a set of more than 1.5 years of continuous measurements simultaneously acquired with two muon detectors is analyzed. The two telescopes scan two different zones of the dome with large overlapping volumes. The changes observed are consistent among the two detectors, thus pointing to a common source of density changes inside the volcano. The method is thus a reliable tool to monitor shallow activity in the volcano and may be used in other "wet volcanoes" in combination with standard monitoring methods to quantification internal processes of mass and heat transfer in the system

National audience; In ion beam therapy, the increased energy deposition of ions towards the finite range in tissue (Bragg peak) allows a precise dose delivery.With the aim of optimizing the ion treatment effectiveness, a strict range monitoring is mandatory: different solutions have been explored, but an online treatment check is still a challenge.The detection of the prompt-gammas (PG) emitted during treatments has proven its potential in the ion range control in real time (Min et al 2006, Testa et al 2008). The falloff of the PG profile (1D distribution along the beam direction) can be measured with millimetrical precision and correlated to the dose distribution thanks to collimated cameras. Compton cameras are also under study to bring 2D – 3D information on PG distributions. Moreover, the application of the Compton camera in the nuclear medicine field, namely for Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT).The development of two prototypes is ongoing in France thanks to the collaboration of five institutions: IPNL (Lyon), CREATIS (Lyon), LPC (Clermont-Ferrand), CPPM (Marseille) and LPSC (Grenoble).The collimated camera design consists of a multi-slit collimator and a segmented absorber made up of 96 BGO streaked blocks, with a position reading pitch of 4 mm in both directions. The same absorber is employed for the Compton camera prototype, together with a stack of 7 double-sided silicon strip detectors (1.41 mm pitch) used as scatter.The use of Time-Of-Flight technique is foreseen for both prototypes in order to maximize the signal (PG) to background (neutron) ratio. A beam tagging hodoscope is then under construction, consisting of two planes of 2 x 128 perpendicular scintillating fibers, read by 64-channel photomultipliers.The three detector components are being tested in the different partner institutions.This contribution will present an overview of the status and perspectives of emission imaging techniques carried out by the collaboration.

International audience; The DIAPHANE project is pluri-disciplinary collaboration between particle physicists and geophysicists to perform the tomography of large geological structure mainly devoted to the study of active volcanoes. The detector used for this tomography, hereafter referred to as telescope, uses a standard, robust, cost-effective and well-known technology based on solid plastic scintillator readout by photomultiplier(s). The first generation of those telescopes, presently running in the Mont-Terri underground laboratory (St-Ursanne, Switzerland) and on the active volcano of La Soufrière (Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles, France), uses Hamamatsu H8804-200mod photomultipliers.We present an upgrade of the readout architecture based on the use of Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM, or MMPC) which allows to simplify the optical connections w.r.t. the present design and to benefit from the high photo-dectection efficiency of the SiPM. To ensure an effective increase in the muon detection efficiency one has to optimize the first trigger level and find the best compromise between photostatistics and the tails of the dark noise contributions. Several readout architectures, based or not on dedicated ASICs, are discussed and compared in this article.

Here we report the first results comparing the temperature dependence of the mechanical dissipation in thin films of Ta_2O_5 and Ta_2O_5 doped with TiO_2, of a type suitable for use in the multilayer optical coatings for advanced gravitational wave detectors. The results indicate that doping Ta_2O_5 with TiO_2 can significantly alter the distribution of activation energies associated with the low-temperature dissipation peak.

During last years, data flow and data storage needs for large gravitational waves interferometric detectors have reached an order of magnitude similar to those of high energy physics experiments. Software tools have been developed to handle and analyze these large amounts of data, with the specificities associated to gravitational waves search. We will make a review of the experience acquired during engineering runs on the VIRGO detector with the currently used data analysis software tools, pointing out the peculiarities inherent to our type of experiments. We will also show what are the possible future needs for the offline analysis VIRGO data.

The VIRGO superattenuator (SA) is effective in suppressing seismic noise below the expected thermal noise level above 4 Hz. However, the residual mirror motion associated with the SA normal modes can saturate the interferometer control system. This motion is reduced by implementing a wideband (DC–5 Hz) multidimensional active control (the so-called inertial damping) which makes use of both accelerometers and position sensors and of a digital signal processing (DSP) system. Feedback forces are exerted by coil–magnet actuators on the top of an inverted pendulum pre-isolator stage. The residual root mean square motion of the mirror in 10 s is less than 0.1 µm. - Abstract
Thermal noise arising from mechanical dissipation in oxide coatings is a major limitation to many precision measurement systems, including optical frequency standards, high-resolution optical spectroscopy and interferometric gravity wave detectors. Presented here are measurements of dissipation as a function of temperature between 7 K and 290 K in ion-beam-sputtered Ta2O5 doped with TiO2, showing a loss peak at 20 K. Analysis of the peak provides the first evidence of the source of dissipation in doped Ta2O5 coatings, leading to possibilities for the reduction of thermal noise effects.

- Abstract
We have tested a new kind of Fabry-Perot long-baseline optical resonator proposed to reduce the thermal noise sensitivity of gravitational wave interferometric detectors--the "mesa beam" cavity--whose flat top beam shape is achieved by means of an aspherical end mirror. We present the fundamental mode intensity pattern for this cavity and its distortion due to surface imperfections and tilt misalignments, and contrast the higher order mode patterns to the Gauss-Laguerre modes of a spherical mirror cavity. We discuss the effects of mirror tilts on cavity alignment and locking and present measurements of the mesa beam tilt sensitivity.

- Abstract
A non-Gaussian, flat-top laser beam profile, also called Mesa Beam Profile, supported by non spherical mirrors known as Mexican Hat (MH) mirrors, has been proposed as a way to depress the mirror thermal noise and thus improve the sensitivity of future interferometric Gravitational Wave detectors, including Advanced LIGO [1]. Non-Gaussian beam configurations have never been tested before [2] hence the main motivation of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility of this new concept. A 7m rigid suspended Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity which can support a scaled version of a Mesa beam applicable to the LIGO interferometers has been developed. The FP cavity prototype is being designed to prove the feasibility of actual MH mirror profiles, determine whether a MH mirror cavity is capable of transforming an incoming Gaussian beam into a flat top beam profile, study the effects of unavoidable mirror imperfections on the resulting beam profile and gauge the difficulties associated with locking and maintaining the alignment of such an optical cavity. We present the design of the experimental apparatus and simulations comparing Gaussian and Mesa beams performed both with ideal and current (measured) mirror profiles. An overview of the technique used to manufacture this kind of mirror and initial results showing Mesa beam properties are presented.

Mirror thermal noise in Ta2O5/SiO2 coatings is predicted to be the limiting noise in the 50-300 Hz frequency range in the interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Ta2O5 losses were dominating compared to the SiO2 losses. We developed a model to calculate multilayer mechanical losses and we are working for low mechanical losses Ta2O5/SiO2 coatings.
