The P and T conditions of the internal zones of an orogen are well constrained by the study of metamorphic assemblages. But it is more difficult to estimate the metamorphic conditions of its external domains and the thermo-barometric calculations are subject to a significant error. The Raman Spectrometry of Carbonaceous Matter (RSCM) has made it possible to obtain the maximum temperature recorded by rocks. In this study, this methodology was applied to the external Variscan belt the French Massif Central.The Montagne Noire represents the outermost part of the belt. A migmatitic dome superimposed on the recumbent Fold-and-Thrust belt series between at 300-325 Ma. The RSCM reveal a decreasing thermal gradient from 400 to 250 ° C from the edge of the dome to 10km to the south. This temperature gradient complies with those determined by the illite crystallinity or the altered colour of conodonts. In all cases, the thermicity linked to the nappes stacking was overprinted by the heat provided by the dome.This study shows that the Cévennes Para-autochthonous Unit recorded a stage of high T (~ 500-550 °C) and mid P (~0.5 GPa) at 320-325 Ma, with relatively uniform conditions over the whole area. In the geodynamic framework of Massif Central evolution, this stage is interpreted as corresponding to a phase of high heat flux, when the orogen experienced the transition between shortening/thickening and collapse/extension. The measured T is not the direct result of the heat transferred from the adjacent plutons; on the contrary, the Cévennes metamorphism and the slightly later-stage pluton emplacement find a common origin in the high T field of the whole orogen at that period. However, in situ dating of the biotite cores suggests an early crystallization around 330-335 Ma that might correspond to the true age of the southward thrusting.; Les conditions P et T des zones internes d’un orogène sont bien contraintes par l’étude des assemblages métamorphiques. Mais il est plus difficile d’accéder aux conditions du métamorphisme des régions les plus externes de l’édifice et les calculs thermo-barométriques sont entachés d’une erreur importante. La spectrométrie Raman sur matière carbonée (RSCM), permet d’obtenir la température maximale enregistrée par les roches. Cette méthodologie a été appliquée au segment varisque externe du Massif central.La Montagne Noire représente la partie la plus externe de la chaîne. Un dôme migmatique s’est mis en place dans les séries sédimentaires Paléozoïques plissées entre 300-325 Ma. Les Tmax RSCM dans ces roches épimétamorphiques révèlent un gradient thermique décroissant de 400 °C à 250 °C depuis la bordure du dôme jusqu’à 10km au sud. Ce gradient de température s’accorde avec ceux déterminés par la cristallinité de l’illite ou la couleur d’altération des conodontes. En revanche, la thermicité liée à l’empilement des nappes a été effacée par la chaleur apportée par le dôme.Cette étude montre que les Cévennes ont enregistré un stade de T élevé (~ 500-550 °C) et de P moyenne (~ 0.5 GPa) à ~ 320-325 Ma, avec des conditions relativement uniformes sur toute la zone. Dans le cadre géodynamique de l'évolution du Massif central, cette étape est interprétée comme une phase de flux géothermique élevé, lors du changement de régime entre raccourcissement / épaississement et effondrement / extension. Les T mesurées ne résultent pas de la chaleur transférée par les plutons tardifs. Au contraire, le métamorphisme cévenol et la mise en place des plutons trouvent une origine commune dans le champ de haute T de l'orogène entier. Cependant des datations ponctuelles des porphyroblastes de biotite suggèrent une cristallisation précoce vers 335-330 Ma qui pourrait correspondre à l’âge vrai des charriages.

Fluid pressure is a key parameter in the brittle, upper portion of the lithosphere, as it controls the stress necessary for faults to slip. In turn, fluid pressure is affected by brittle deformation, as large permeability changes occur during the seismic cycle. The interplay between fluid pressure and deformation is nevertheless mostly a theoretical model, as few data are available regarding the amplitude of fluid pressure at depth and its variations with time.
