Abstract

Languages differ in terms of the absence or presence of gender features, the number of gender classes and whether and where gender features are explicitly marked. These cross-linguistic differences can lead to ambiguities that are difficult to resolve, especially for sentence-level MT systems. The identification of ambiguity and its subsequent resolution is a challenging task for which currently there aren't any specific resources or challenge sets available. In this paper, we introduce gENder-IT, an English--Italian challenge set focusing on the resolution of natural gender phenomena by providing word-level gender tags on the English source side and multiple gender alternative translations, where needed, on the Italian target side.

Abstract

5. Gamified Crowdsourcing for Idiom Corpora Construction

Abstract

Learning idiomatic expressions is seen as one of the most challenging stages in second language learning because of their unpredictable meaning. A similar situation holds for their identification within natural language processing applications such as machine translation and parsing. The lack of high-quality usage samples exacerbates this challenge not only for humans but also for artificial intelligence systems. This article introduces a gamified crowdsourcing approach for collecting language learning materials for idiomatic expressions; a messaging bot is designed as an asynchronous multiplayer game for native speakers who compete with each other while providing idiomatic and nonidiomatic usage examples and rating other players' entries. As opposed to classical crowdprocessing annotation efforts in the field, for the first time in the literature, a crowdcreating & crowdrating approach is implemented and tested for idiom corpora construction. The approach is language independent and evaluated on two languages in comparison to traditional data preparation techniques in the field. The reaction of the crowd is monitored under different motivational means (namely, gamification affordances and monetary rewards). The results reveal that the proposed approach is powerful in collecting the targeted materials, and although being an explicit crowdsourcing approach, it is found entertaining and useful by the crowd. The approach has been shown to have the potential to speed up the construction of idiom corpora for different natural languages to be used as second language learning material, training data for supervised idiom identification systems, or samples for lexicographic studies., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

6. Becoming Storytellers: Improving ESL Students' Academic Engagement and 21st Century Skills through Interactive Digital Storytelling

Abstract

21st Century education is rapidly changing due to the emerging of new media technologies that provide easy access to a great amount of information. Accordingly, as today's students are immersed in a technological society, they need to be equipped with the skills necessary to interpret, synthesize and produce new information. Thus, today's educators and researchers face the challenge of making students become skillful users of new technologies so to increase their motivation and engagement by also improving their learning outcomes. In particular, in the context of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), using technology appropriately could be a valuable approach to create a meaningful learning context where the acquisition of language and literacy skills is accompanied by that of digital skills. To that end, Digital Storytelling (DST) seems to perfectly embody and meet the various educational needs of today's students because due to its dynamic feature of combining traditional storytelling with a variety of digital multimedia it provides opportunities for the improvement of learning skills including cooperative learning, motivation, and engagement. In the light of CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning), Collaborative Learning (CL), and the Constructivist Paradigm (CP), this paper aims at addressing the potential of Interactive Digital Storytelling in enhancing ESL (English as a Second Language) students' academic engagement and 21st Century Skills. Therefore, this paper describes the implementation of DST at "L'Orientale" University of Naples with 24 ESL students involving qualitative and quantitative methods of collecting data. Abstract

We present version 1.3 of the PARSEME multilingual corpus annotated with verbal multiword expressions. Since the previous version, new languages have joined the undertaking of creating such a resource, some of the already existing corpora have been enriched with new annotated texts, while others have been enhanced in various ways. The PARSEME multilingual corpus represents 26 languages now. All monolingual corpora therein use Universal Dependencies v.2 tagset. They are (re-)split observing the PARSEME v.1.2 standard, which puts impact on unseen VMWEs. With the current iteration, the corpus release process has been detached from shared tasks; instead, a process for continuous improvement and systematic releases has been introduced.

Abstract

The lack of annotated datasets affects the development of Natural Language Processing applications and heavily impacts the access to textual data, in particular for specific domains and specific languages. In this paper, we propose a methodology to annotate texts concerning domain-specific knowledge, to provide a reliable source of data for the task of Named Entity Recognition (NER) in the domain of archaeology for the Italian laguage. This method integrates syntactic and semantic information from several structured sources to annotate entities' mentions in unstructured texts. Furthermore, we make use of an ontology to label entities with the specific type they refer to. By using a corpus made up of item descriptions from Europeana's Archaeology Collection, we first test our proposed methodology on a mock dataset composed of 1,000 texts. After several steps of improvements, we use the final process to create a complete dataset composed of 5,000 descriptions. The resulting dataset, Named Entities in Archaeological Texts has a total of 41,002 spans of texts annotated with their domain-specific entity classification according to the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model. Abstract

On behalf of the Program Committee, a very warm welcome to the Seventh Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics (CLiC-it 2020). This edition of the conference is held in Bologna and organised by the University of Bologna. The CLiC-it conference series is an initiative of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics (AILC) which, after six years of activity, has clearly established itself as the premier national forum for research and development in the fields of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing, where leading researchers and practitioners from academia and industry meet to share their research results, experiences, and challenges.

Abstract

[Italiano]: Il presente volume �� una raccolta di interviste rivolte ad alcuni importanti esperti italiani nel settore dei beni culturali (BBCC). La sfida che attualmente caratterizza il sistema dei BBCC risiede nella capacit�� di attuare una ricerca integrata e sinergica, al fine di superare i confini settoriali e favorire le trasformazioni culturali, ambientali e tecnologiche. Inoltre, nelle operazioni di valorizzazione, gestione, conservazione e promozione del patrimonio culturale risulta necessario l'uso innovativo della tecnologia per creare nuove forme di accesso e fruizione dei contenuti culturali, coinvolgendo attivamente i cittadini in pratiche conoscitive ed esperienziali. Pertanto, si �� ritenuto opportuno rivolgere alcuni interrogativi a professionisti attualmente attivi nel settore della innovazione digitale nel campo dei Beni Culturali e Archeologici, chiedendo loro di offrire una ampia istantanea del variegato e complesso sistema della gestione del patrimonio culturale./[English]: This volume is a collection of interviews with distinguished experts in the Italian Cultural Heritage (CH) sector. The challenge that currently characterizes the CH field lies in the ability to implement integrated and synergic research, overcome sectoral boundaries and foster cultural, environmental and technological transformations. Moreover, the innovative use of technology appears to be necessary for the enhancement, management, conservation and promotion of CH processes. Such an alternative use of technology is crucial, not only to create new forms of access and fruition of cultural content but also to actively involve citizens in cognitive and experiential practices. Therefore, it was deemed appropriate to address some questions to professionals currently involved in the digital innovation process in the field of Cultural and Archaeological Heritage, asking them to offer a broad snapshot of the varied and complex system of cultural heritage management.
