Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to explore end-of-life (EOL) care planning and the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) among people who identify as Black or African American. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) were used to guide and inform this systematic review process. The following academic electronic databases with publications that reflected the interdisciplinary fields related to the research objective were searched: APA PsycINFO, CINHAL, PubMed, Scopus, and Social Work Abstracts. Results: After the authors conducted the search, 14 articles (from 13 studies) ultimately met the criteria for inclusion. The results substantiated significant concerns highlighted in previous literature regarding SES and its relation to EOL planning, but also revealed an absence of original work and interventions to increase engagement in EOL planning among Black and African American populations. Conclusion: Black individuals deserve an equitable EOL experience. Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers need to move towards advocacy and action to meet this important need. - Abstract
This study explored the perceptions of resilience and coping among homeless young adults, a focus that differs from previous research by considering the unconventional resilience and coping of this high-risk population. Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with 45 homeless young adults. Individual interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by coders using an iterative process of content analysis. Findings revealed four primary themes that highlight perceptions of resiliency and coping, including individual strengths, positive life perspective, external social supports, and individual coping strategies. Implications for professionals working with this population suggest that developing and strengthening programs tailored to utilize homeless young adults' resiliency may be beneficial. Recognizing the strengths and resilience that homeless young adults are capable of, and incorporating a strength-based perspective to empower these young adults, may encourage positive choices and increase the likelihood of transitioning out of homelessness.

- Abstract
In the 21st century, substantial advancements have been made across the globe that positively affect the ability for school-based social workers in the fields of practice, policy, and research to meet the needs of the world's youths. Nonetheless, children continue to suffer from poverty-stricken environments, absence of basic needs, poor or no health care, and insufficient access to quality education. The purpose of this article was to review recent trends in children's rights to education, psychological and behavioral health, and physiological health and to provide social workers with a contextual landscape for progress. Specific suggestions about how school-based social workers can make improvements across the globe are offered.

- Abstract
Social workers provide services to a variety of clients and are challenged with finding interventions that meet the multifaceted needs of diverse populations. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is becoming an increasingly popular therapy that offers flexibility and effectiveness in treating challenging cases. The purpose of this review is to provide social work researchers and practitioners with an explanation of the clinical application of ACT. The article provides a systematic review of the existing efficacy of ACT with various health illnesses. The authors gathered articles from multiple databases that investigated ACT as an intervention with psychological and physiological health illnesses and calculated corresponding effect sizes. Effect sizes indicated that ACT is a promising intervention for those with anxiety disorders, depression, psychosis, trichotillomania, epilepsy, chronic skin picking, and diabetes. The research on ACT and its promising applications to help clients with various health illnesses provide social workers with promising alternatives for approaching challenging illnesses. Although the empirical base continues to show promise for ACT, additional research using larger sample sizes and more rigorous designs is needed before more definitive claims can be made about the effectiveness of ACT.

FEMINIST fiction , *ADVENTURE stories , *EQUALITY in literature , *FICTION , *LITERARY criticism - Abstract
WhileEast Lynne's (1861) harshly punished Isabel Vane has become a critical metonym for Ellen Price Wood's traditional stance on gender, the short stories that she wrote and edited for theArgosymagazine in the 1870s show a more progressive bent. TheArgosy's “ladies who launch” provide the reader with a model of the successful integration of women into male professional spheres, and of the well-founded relationships that can develop when men and women are on an equal footing. The respectable heroines of theArgosy's nautical fiction crisply articulate their moral and social positions while behaving well, winning the reader's good opinion through both logic and moral approbation, and inviting the reader to question some of the too strict social codes that make these women's lives difficult. These short stories, published in a popular and respectable family magazine, suggest a largely unexplored side to Wood's portrayal of gender dynamics, and anticipate the New Woman fiction that would not fully emerge for another 20 years. Research on juvenile offenders has largely treated this population as a homogeneous group. However, recent findings suggest that this at-risk population may be considerably more heterogeneous than previously believed. This study compared mixture regression analyses with standard regression techniques in an effort to explain how known factors such as distress, trauma, and personality are associated with drug abuse among juvenile offenders. Researchers recruited 728 juvenile offenders from Missouri juvenile correctional facilities for participation in this study. Researchers investigated past-year substance use in relation to the following variables: demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, familial use of public assistance), antisocial behavior, and mental illness symptoms (psychopathic traits, psychiatric distress, and prior trauma). Results indicated that standard and mixed regression approaches identified significant variables related to past-year substance use among this population; however, the mixture regression methods provided greater specificity in results. Mixture regression analytic methods may help policy makers and practitioners better understand and intervene with the substance-related subgroups of juvenile offenders. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Mindfulness therapies have gained considerable attention recently in empirical literature, revealing promise for the reduction of a variety of psychological and physiological symptoms among adults. Studies have offered promising results regarding the efficacy of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for use with problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, borderline personality traits, internalizing and externalizing problems, chronic pain, psychosis, and epilepsy. Only in recent years have researchers begun to investigate the impact of mindfulness therapies on adolescent illnesses. To date, however, there has been no synthesis of research on mindfulness therapies with adolescents. Using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, a systematic synthesis of the literature yielded a final sample of fifteen studies (two ACT, twelve DBT, and one MBSR). When they were not reported in the studies, effect sizes (Hedges's g) were calculated for all outcome measures using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.0 software. The majority of included studies reflected moderate to very large effect sizes regarding the impact of the mindfulness therapies on outcome variables; however, only particular variables were significant. Findings from this systematic review offer a first step toward understanding the impact of mindfulness therapies with adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
"When it became necessary in a course dealing with motion in art to create a piece of work using kinetic force, I turned to natural wind currents because of my complete lack of interest in machines. This choice plus an interest in fabrics and sewing, developed over a number of years, led quite naturally to a concern with banners of fabric and design highly sensitive to changes in wind current. My first banners were of bold, simple designs executed entirely of cotton fabric in an appliqué method. They were usually three and four foot rectangles suspended on a rod and hung from the ceiling. A swivel allowed the entire banner to turn in response to air currents while the fabric was free to swing or flutter in the breeze.
