La exploración de Oriente y Egipto estuvo dominada, entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, por las tres potencias de la época: Francia y, siguiendo su estela, Gran Bretaña y Alemania, que sentaron los fundamentos de la asiriología y la egiptología. A pesar del contexto poco favorable, tanto España como Portugal también hicieron esfuerzos —en general en intervenciones aisladas y personalistas— para contribuir a la investigación en estos ámbitos. Esta monografía reúne los estudios de una serie de especialistas hispanolusos realizados con el objetivo común de recuperar el legado de algunos de estos pioneros españoles y portugueses en el campo de las antigüedades orientales y egipcias, y de reivindicar el trabajo de las instituciones, los viajeros, los diplomáticos y los coleccionistas que abrieron el camino por el que hoy transitamos.

El estudio de la documentación textual y arqueológica ha servido para plantear una serie de reflexiones sobre la localización en el Medio Éufrates sirio de Dur-Yahdun-Lim, la fortaleza que controlaba la frontera noroccidental del reino de Mari a comienzos del II milenio a.C. Akk Purattim, ou « les rives de l'Eupkrate », est une des expressions utilisées au xviiie siècle av. J.-C. pour désigner le royaume de Mari, qui s'étendait de la confluence du Khabour au verrou de Baghouz, actuellement à la frontière syro-irakienne. La série ainsi dénommée, précisée par son sous-titre « Mémoires d'archéologie et d'histoire régionales interdisciplinaires », est destinée à devenir le point de rencontre des recherches historiques, archéologiques, épigraphiques ou archéométriques sur la région, en faisant en priorité appel aux travaux engagés par les diverses missions, françaises (comme Mari et Terqa) et étrangères, en particulier pour la publication de leurs rapports préliminaires. Mais le titre peut également être pris dans une acception géographique beaucoup plus vaste et héberger des études qui s'intéressent le plus largement possible au rôle de cette confluence dans le jeu syro-mésopotamien tout au long de l'Antiquité. Akh Purattim, or "the banks of the Euphrates", is one of the expressions used m the 18th century BC to designate the kingdom of Mari, which extended from the confluence of the Khabur to the glacial cross cliff of Baghuz, today the Syrian-Iraqi border. The series thus named, defined by its subtitle "Mémoires d'archéologie et d'histoire régionales interdisciplinaires", is intended to become the meeting point for historical, archaeological, epi'graphic and archaeometric research on. the region, with priority given to the work conducted by the various missions, French (Man, Terqa for instance) as well as foreign, in particular the publication of their preliminary reports. But the title can. also include a larger geographic area and cover studies which are concerned as widely as possible with the role of this confluence in Syro-Mesopotamian history throughout Antiquity.

[Abstract] Since its discovery in 1913, the Tower of Babel has fuelled debate among specialists in Mesopotamian architecture. The discussion has focused on three formal aspects of the famous monument: the total height of the building, its system of access, and the shape of the temple that occupied its summit. The article reopens the scientific dossier and conducts a reflection on these three aspects of the great sacred structure built by the Babylonians. A new hypothesis on the reconstruction of the Tower of Babel might be put forward. [Résumé] Depuis sa découverte en 1913, la tour de Babel a nourri un débat entre les spécialistes en architecture de la Mésopotamie. La discussion s’est concentrée sur trois aspects formels du célèbre monument : la hauteur totale du bâtiment, le système d’accès à celui-ci et la forme du temple qui en occupait le sommet. Cet article rouvre ce dossier scientifique et propose une réflexion sur ces trois aspects de la grande construction sacrée bâtie par les Babyloniens. Une autre hypothèse de reconstruction de la tour de Babel pourrait être possible

La séptima campaña del Proyecto Arqueológico Medio Éufrates Sirio (PAMES) tuvo como objetivo la realización de los primeros trabajos de excavación en Tall Humeida, en el norte de Deir ez-Zor. Los resultados muestran una ocupación del período de Uruk (mediados del IV milenio a. C.) y del período Bizantino (siglos VI-VII d. C.).

In the sixth campaign, 2010, of the Proyecto Arqueológico Medio Éufrates Sirio, excavation was renewed in Tell Qubr Abu al-‘Atiq, namely in the area of the Middle Assyrian building, our major focus of activity, and also a trench was run to determine whether or not the Early Bronze Age settlement at this very site had a city wall.

La cuarta campaña del “Proyecto Arqueológico Medio Éufra- 191 tes Sirio” se desarrolló a lo largo del mes de julio de 2008 y tuvo como principal objetivo la realización de varios sondeos en Tall Qabr Abu al-‘Atiq, un yacimiento situado en la orilla izquierda del Medio Éufrates sirio, en la entrada de la garganta de Halabiya, en Deir ez-Zor.

Until the beginning of archaeological research in Babylon in 1899 the city was only known in Europe through the information provided by the Old Testament, classical geographers and historians (specially Herodotus), and the stories of many adventurers. In fact many western travellers, who for different reasons visited the Near East, sought the most important Mesopotamian city and its legendary tower, the Tower of Babel, using only the information provided by the Bible and classical sources.

Neste artigo, apresentam-se os resultados provisórios da primeira campanha (2005) do projecto arqueológico "Médio Eufrates Sírio". Este projecto de investigação na antiga Mesopotâmia é coordenado pela Universidade da Corunha e pela Direcção Geral de Antiguidades e Museus da Síria e conta com a colaboração do CSIC e de outras universidades espanholas, assim como da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. A investigação tem como objectivo o estudo de um sector do vale do Médio Eufrates (província de Deir ez-Zor, Síria) e da sua relação com o reino siro-mesopotâmico de Mari. Na campanha de 2005, os trabalhos concentraram-se em dois sectores do projecto: na zona sul, foram identificados diversos sítios da Idade do Bronze através de uma prospecção arqueológica; na zona norte, foram efectuadas várias sondagens no sítio bizantino de Tall as-Sin., [EN] In this paper, we present the provisory results of the first campaign (2005) of the archaeological project "Syrian Middle Euphrates". This research project in ancient Mesopotamia is co-ordinated by University of A Coruña and by General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums of Syria and has the contribution of CSIC and other Spanish universities, and of New University of Lisbon, as well. The aim of this project is the study of a sector of the valley of Middle Euphrates (in the province of Deir ez-Zor, Syria) and of its relation with the syro-mesopotamian kingdom of Mari. In the 2005 campaign, works had been concentrated in two sectors: in the southern area, several sites from Bronze Age were identified through archaeological survey; in the northern area, some archaeological sondages took place in the Byzantine site of Tall as-Sin.
