Abstract

The World Health Organisation (WHO) presents an upper limit for lead in drinking water of 10 parts per billion ppb. Typically, to reach this level of sensitivity, expensive metrology is required. To increase the sensitivity of low cost devices, this paper explores the prospects of using a volume reduction technique of a boiled water sample doped with Lead-210 ($^{210}Pb$), as a means to increase the solute's concentration. $^{210}$Pb is a radioactive lead isotope and its concentration in a water sample can be measured with e.g. High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors at the Boulby Underground Germanium Suite. Concentrations close to the WHO limit have not been examined. This paper presents a measurement of the volume reduction technique retaining $99\pm(9)\%$ of $^{210}$Pb starting from a concentration of $1.9\times10^{-6}$ ppb before reduction and resulting in $2.63\times10^{-4}$ ppb after reduction. This work also applies the volume reduction technique to London tap water and reports the radioassay results from gamma counting in HPGe detectors. Among other radio-isotopes, $^{40}$K, $^{210}$Pb, $^{131}$I and $^{177}$Lu were identified at measured concentrations of $2.83\times10^{3}$ ppb, $2.55\times10^{-7}$ ppb, $5.06\times10^{-10}$ ppb and $5.84\times10^{-10}$ ppb in the London tap water sample. This technique retained $90\pm50\%$ of $^{40}$K. Stable lead was inferred from the same water sample at a measured concentration of 0.012 ppb, prior to reduction.

Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a novel CMOS device employing lead-sensing bacteria to assay lead in drinking water. The objective of the PlomBOX project is to develop a low-cost sensor ({\pounds}10) which can expedite access to on-demand assay methods and thus help mitigate lead intake through contaminated drinking water. The project follows three development paths: a) Certain bacteria can fluoresce or change colour when in the presence of lead. A genetically modified strain of Escherichia coli sensitive to lead concentrations up to 10 ppb is being developed. This constitutes the biosensor that fluoresces in proportion to the presence of lead. b) Bacteria response is imaged using a microprocessor (ESP32) with a camera module. This constitutes the optical metrology component of the PlomBOX. c) Data acquisition and control of the PlomBOX is achieved through a Bluetooth connection with the PlomApp, a custom-developed mobile phone application. Data are sent from the PlomApp to a database where a bespoke automated analysis software provides a result of the lead concentration in a sample of water. This paper reports on the instrumentation challenges of developing the electronics for the PlomBOX and on the first prototype.

Abstract

This article reports the characterization of two High Purity Germanium detectors performed by extracting and comparing their efficiencies using experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations. The efficiencies were calculated for pointlike $\gamma$-ray sources as well as for extended calibration sources. Characteristics of the detectors such as energy linearity, energy resolution, and full energy peak efficiencies are reported from measurements performed on surface laboratories. Abstract

The encapsulation-dehydration and vitrification techniques were experimented for freezing apices of pineapple in vitro plantlets. Positive results were achieved using vitrification only. Optimal conditions included a 2-d preculture of apices on medium supplemented with 0.3M sucrose, loading treatment for 25 min in medium with 0.75M sucrose + 1M glycerol and dehydration with PVS2 vitrification solution at 0 degrees C for 7 h before rapid freezing in liquid nitrogen. This method resulted in 65, 35 and 25% survival with apices of varieties Puerto Rico, Perolera and Smooth Cayenne, respectively. Abstract

A simplified freezing process was developed and successfully applied to embryogenic calluses of three sugarcane commercial hybrids (Saccharum sp. cv. CP 5243, C 91-301 and C 1051-73). To obtain optimal survival, the calluses were pretreated with a cryoprotective solution containing 10% DMSO and 0.3 to 0.75M sucrose. For freezing, the samples were immersed in an alcohol bath placed in a -40 degrees C freezer, thus allowing a freezing rate comprised between 0.4 and 0.6 degrees C/min. Samples were held at that temperature for 2 h before immersion in liquid nitrogen. The highest survival rates of cryopreserved calluses ranged between 20 and 94% depending on the variety, and fully developed plantlets could be obtained from regenerating calluses. Embryogenic calluses of one variety were stored for 14 months in liquid nitrogen without any effect on their survival rate and plantlet production., Comment: 6 pages, 3 tables

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. Abstract

In this paper, we investigated if the differences consistently noted in survival and plantlet production between cryopreserved and non-cryopreserved, control sugarcane embryogenic calluses were related to modifications induced during cryopreservation in the structural and functional integrity of cell membranes. For this, the evolution of electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation products and cell membrane protein contents was measured during 5 d after cryopreservation. Differences between control and frozen calluses were observed only during the first 2 (electrolyte leakage) or 3 d (lipid peroxidation products and membrane protein content) after freezing. It was not possible to link these differences with the differences noted in survival and plant production between control and cryopreserved calluses. Additional studies are thus needed to elucidate which biochemical factors, linked to survival and plantlet regeneration, are affected by cryopreservation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The formulation of the First and Second Principles of thermodynamics for a particle in contact with a heat bath and submitted to an external force is analyzed, by means of the Boltzmann-Lorentz kinetic equation. The possible definitions of the thermodynamic quantities are discussed in the light of the H theorem verified by the distribution of the particle. The work fluctuation relations formulated by Bochkov and Kuzovlev, and by Jarzynski, respectively, are derived from the kinetic equation. In addition, particle simulations using both the direct simulation Monte Carlo method and Molecular Dynamics, are used to investigate the practical accuracy of the results. Work distributions are also measured, and they turn out to be rather complex. On the other hand, they seem to depend very little, if any, on the interaction potential between the intruder and the bath.

Abstract

Increasing the energy density and power of supercapacitors through hybrids of carbonaceous materials and metal oxides continues to be the subject of numerous research works. The correlation between specific capacitance and the properties of materials used as electrodes attracts great interest. In the present study, we investigated composites (GO/Mn3O4) prepared by the hydrothermal method with a variable ratio of GO/Mn3O4 and tested them as supercapacitor electrode materials in three- and two-electrode cells. The chemical characterization carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the adsorption techniques used allowed the determination of the surface carbon and oxygen content, as well as its textural properties. In this work, we analyzed the contribution of the double layer and the Faradaic reactions to the value of the final capacitance of the synthesized materials. Beyond empirically obtaining the electrochemical properties, these have been related to the physicochemical characteristics of the hybrids to help design materials with the best performance for supercapacitor electrodes. 47. De/Colonizing Preservice Teacher Education: Theatre of the Academic Absurd

Abstract

Where does the work of de/colonizing preservice teacher education begin? Aboriginal children's literature? Storytelling and theatrical performance? Or, with a paradigm shift? This article takes up some of these questions and challenges, old and new, and begins to problematize these deeper layers. In this article, the authors explore the conversations and counterpoints that came about looking at the theme of social justice through the lens of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) children's literature. As the scope of this lens widened, it became more evident to the authors that there are several filters that can be applied to the work of de/colonizing preservice teacher education programs and the larger educational system. This article also explores what it means to act and perform notions of de/colonization, and is constructed like a script, thus bridging the voices of academia, theatre, and Indigenous knowledge. In the first half (the academic script) the authors work through the messy and tangled web of de/colonization, while the second half (the actors' script) examines these frameworks and narratives through the actor's voice. The article calls into question the notions of performing inquiry and deconstructing narrative.

Abstract

The hydrodynamic part of the velocity autocorrelation function of a granular fluid in the homogeneous cooling state has been calculated by using mode-coupling theory for a finite system with periodic boundary conditions. The existence of the shearing instability, leading to a divergent behavior of the velocity flow fluctuations, is taken into account. A time region in which the velocity autocorrelation function exhibits a power law decay, when time is measured by the number of collisions per particle, has been been identified. Also the explicit form of the exponential asymptotic long time decay has been obtained. The theoretical prediction for the power law decay is compared with molecular dynamics simulation results, and a good agreement is found, after taking into account finite size corrections. The effects of approaching the shearing instability are also explored.
