- Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 was classified as a global pandemic, so Cuba was not oblivious of the situation. This period was characterized by limited autochthonous transmission, quarantine of communities and rapid action of healthcare workers.Objective: To describe the incidence of COVID-19 in Cienfuegos from March 2020 to March 2021.Material and Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of confirmed COVID-19 cases was carried out in Cienfuegos from March 2020 to March 2021. The universe consisted of 1076 cases. The variables used included: month of confirmation, source of infection, origin of the case, sex, age group and symptoms. Descriptive statistics were used.Results: The incidence of the study period was 265,65 per 100 000 inhabitants. The female sex predominated with an incidence rate of 268,42 per 100 000 inhabitants. The age group of 50-59 presented 229 cases (21,28 %). In March 2021, the highest incidence of cases was evidenced (84,99 per 100,000 inhabitants). Similarly, 86,93 % were autochthonous cases (936 cases). Cienfuegos municipality highlights because of an incidence rate of 390,29 per 100,000 inhabitants. Asymptomatic patients represented 38,94 % (419 patients).Conclusions: The gradual rise in COVID-19 cases in Cienfuegos is a consequence of the close contact between citizens which increased from the “new normality” with a wide range of symptoms., Introducción: la COVID-19 se catalogó como pandemia mundial por lo que Cuba no estuvo ajena a la situación. Transmisión autóctona limitada, cuarentena de comunidades y rápido accionar del personal de salud caracterizaron este periodo. Objetivo: describir la incidencia de la COVID-19 en Cienfuegos del mes de marzo de 2020 a marzo de 2021.Material y métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, de corte transversal de los casos confirmados de COVID-19 en Cienfuegos de marzo de 2020 a marzo de 2021. El universo estuvo conformado por 1076 casos. Variables empleadas: mes de confirmación, fuente de infección, procedencia del caso, sexo, grupo etario y sintomatología. Se utilizó estadística descriptiva.Resultados: la incidencia del periodo de estudio fue de 265,65 por 100 000 habitantes. Predominó el sexo femenino con una tasa de incidencia de 268,42 por 100 000 habitantes. El grupo etario 50-59 presentó 229 casos (21,28 %). En marzo del 2021 se evidenció la mayor incidencia de casos (84,99 por 100 000 habitantes). El 86,93 % fueron casos autóctonos (936 casos). El municipio de Cienfuegos destacó con una tasa de incidencia de 390,29 por 100 000 habitantes. Los pacientes asintomáticos representaron el 38,94 % (419 pacientes).Conclusiones: el ascenso paulatino de los casos de COVID-19 en Cienfuegos responde al estrecho contacto entre los ciudadanos; incrementado a partir de la nueva normalidad y con amplio abanico de síntomas.

- Abstract
Foundation: noise is included among the 5 risk factors of physical origin for health in the working environment. Objective: to determine if sound pollution at the Cienfuegos Manufacturing and Marketing Company of glucose, starch and other corn byproducts, exceeds maximum admissible values on NC 871/11 of Health Safety and Health at Work. Methods: a cross descriptive study at the Cienfuegos Manufacturing and Marketing Company of glucose, starch and other corn byproducts was conducted, on February 2018. A number of 287 persons were working, out of them 247 directly in production processes. Measurements of sound levels in the working areas were done according to the valid Cuban standard NC 19-01-14/83. Variables continues equivalent sound level, express in decibels (dB(A) and time of exposure in hours. To measure noise, it was used and integrative sonometer type 2. Measurements were done the during working hours. Results: in the steam generator, compressor boiler, grinding and generation areas, corn reception and cleaning, animal feed factory, dryers and centrifugal equipment noise levels exceed 90 db (a) of exposition. Conclusion: the levels of noise found exceed the admissible maximum which might produce harmful health consequences on workers therefore it is necessary to intervene this working environment [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Foundation: rabies is a viral disease with a mortality of almost 100%, but avoidable by vaccination. Objective: To describe clinical and epidemiological aspects of rabies in the province of Cienfuegos, in the years 2016 and 2017. Methods: retrospective descriptive study of all the patients injured by animals in the province of Cienfuegos, during the period from January 2016 to December 2017. The variables analyzed were: municipalities of occurrence, injury severity, age groups, type of animal injury, rabies treatment, canine sanitation and rabies surveillance. The primary source for obtaining the information was injured patient's notification cards review in the health areas of the Cienfuegos Province and data from the Department of Statistics of the Provincial Center for Hygiene Epidemiology and Microbiology of Cienfuegos. Results: 2 577 injured were reported; Lajas was the municipality with the highest number of reports in 2016 and Palmira in 2017; the risk of humans to get rabies is kept high; 87.5% of the injuries were produced by canines, of which 35.2% are street dogs. The 5-9 years pediatric ages have the highest rates; slight injuries predominated and sanitation activity was higher in 2017. Conclusion: there are still difficulties in the prevention and control of rabies, so it is important to work on the deficiencies to avoid the occurrence of cases taking into account the high lethality of this disease. - Abstract
Foundation: Along the years, in the National Program of Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis of Cuba several changes have been done as those related to its evaluation, including new synthetic indicators. Objective: to evaluate the synthetic indicators for the location and detection of new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: descriptive research in health services and systems realized in health areas I and II of the Cienfuegos Municipality in the years 2013. The information was taken from the Department of Statistics of the Health Areas. The processing of the data to calculate the indicators was done with the program CALIND designed in Access, used with purpose in the Institute Pedro Kouri. Percentage and incidence rate were used as a Mathematical measures for the quantitative data analysis. Results: the application of the synthetic indicator was used to assess the quality of location of the tuberculosis cases in Area I. It was evaluated as deficient in this area and acceptable in Area II. The synthetic indicator was evaluated as deplorable in Area I and poor in Area II. Conclusion: the application of synthetic indicators for locating and detecting cases of Tuberculosis is coherent with the reality about the quality of case detection. It is corroborated its effectiveness to assess the process in the Program of Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
