5. Cambro–Ordovician ferrosilicic magmatism along the northern Gondwana margin: constraints from the Cézarenque–Joyeuse gneiss complex (French Massif Central)

Abstract

It is well-acknowledged that the northern margin of the Gondwana supercontinent was affected by a major magmatic event at late Cambrian (Furongian) to early Ordovician (Tremadocian–Floian) times. However, an accurate assessment of its extent, origin, and significance is partly hampered by the incomplete characterization of the numerous gneiss massifs exposed in the inner part of the Variscan belt, as some of them possibly represent dismembered and deformed Furongian–Lower Ordovician igneous bodies. In this study, we document the case of the “Cézarenque–Joyeuse” gneiss complex in the Cévennes parautochthon domain of the French Massif Central. The gneisses form decametre- to kilometre-thick concordant massifs interlayered within a pluri-kilometric sequence of mica- and quartz schists. They encompass two main petrological types: augen gneisses and albite gneisses, both typified by their blue and engulfed quartz grains with the augen facies differing by the presence of centimetre-sized pseudomorphs after K-feldspar and the local preservation of igneous textures. Whole-rock geochemistry highlights that many gneisses have magmatic ferrosilicic (acidic with anomalously high FeOt and low CaO) compositions while others are akin to greywackes. Collectively, it is inferred that the bulk of the Cézarenque–Joyeuse gneisses represents former rhyodacite lava flows or ignimbrites and associated epiclastic tuffs. Volumetrically subordinate, finer grained, and strongly silicic leucogneisses are interpreted as microgranite dykes originally intrusive within the volcanic edifices. LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating of magmatic zircon grains extracted from an augen gneiss and a leucogneiss brackets the crystallization age of the silicic magmas between 486.1 ± 5.5 Ma and 483.0 ± 5.5 Ma which unambiguously ties the Cézarenque–Joyeuse gneisses to the Furongian–Lower Ordovician volcanic belt of SW Europe. Inherited zircon date distributions, Ti-in-zircon and zircon saturation thermometry demonstrate that they formed by melting at 750–820 °C of Ediacaran sediments. Zircon Eu/Eu* and Ce/Ce* systematics indicate that the melts were strongly reduced (fO2 probably close to the values expected for the iron–wüstite buffer), possibly because they interacted during ascent with Lower Cambrian black shales. This would have enhanced Fe solubility in the melt phase and may explain the peculiar ferrosilicic signature displayed by many Furongian–Lower Ordovician igneous rocks in the northern Gondwana realm. We infer that crustal melting resulted from a combination of mantle-derived magma underplating in an intracontinental rift setting and anomalously elevated radiogenic heat production within the Ediacaran sedimentary sequences.

Abstract

The chemical compositions of the products from the partial melting of quartz-rich metagreywacke are studied. These include biotite, plagioclase, orthopyroxene, garnet, cordierite, hercynite, staurolite, gedrite, oxide and glass at 100-1000 MPa and 780-1025 degrees Centigrade. It is shown that metagreywackes are fertile at pressures of 300-700 MPa and less fertile at pressures exceeding 800 MPa.

Abstract

We provide new experimental data on monazite, xenotime and U–Th-bearing cheralite solubility in slightly peralkaline to peraluminous granitic melts using dissolution and reverse (i.e. recrystallization after dissolution) experiments in water-saturated and flux-bearing (P + F + Li) granitic melts, at 800 °C and 200 MPa. Although a positive correlation between rare earth element (REE) solubility and melt peralkalinity is confirmed, monazite solubilities reported here are much lower than the values previously published. We suggest that the presence of elevated phosphorus concentrations in our melts depresses monazite solubility, principally because phosphorus complexes with Al and alkali, which normally depolymerize the melt through the formation of non-bridging oxygens. The new solubility data provide an explanation for the very low REE concentrations generally encountered in phosphorus-bearing peraluminous granites and pegmatites. This accounts for the compatibility of REE in peraluminous systems, as the early crystallization of REE-bearing minerals (mainly monazite and zircon) leads to progressive REE depletion during liquid differentiation. In addition, dissolution and reverse experiments on U–Th-bearing cheralite–monazite display liquid–liquid immiscibility processes in our slightly peralkaline glass. The immiscible liquid forms droplets up to 10 µm in diameter and hosts on average 35 wt% P2O5, 25–30 wt% F, 22 wt% Al2O3, 4 wt% CaO, 5 wt% Na2O, 2 wt% La2O3, and 12 wt% ThO2 + UO2. We believe that the droplets formed during the runs and may have coalesced to larger droplets during quenching. We suggest that liquid–liquid immiscibility is a possible mechanism of REE concentration in highly fluxed melts and should be considered in natural systems where REE are extremely concentrated (up to thousands of µg g–1) in magmatic rocks. Abstract

Experimental analysis of fluid-absent melting of quartz-rich aluminous metagreywacke explains the occurrence of partial-melting processes in these rocks. The primary reaction in this system involves the melting of biotite, plagioclase and quartz to yield melt, cordierite and ortho-pyroxene at 100, 200 and 300 MPa, and melt, garnet and orthopyroxene at 500-1700 MPa. Plagioclase residues are rich in orthoclase. Biotite disappears at 200 Mpa without yielding orthopyroxene.

International audience; The talcschists of the Boumnyebel area (southern Cameroon) form ≤ 30 m thick discontinuous layers within a Pan-African nappe unit (Yaoundé group), which includes, at the base, muscovite + biotite ± garnet micaschists associated with amphibolites and pyroxenites, and, at the top, muscovite + biotite + garnet + kyanite micaschists locally associated with marble and amphibolites. The metamorphic peak (not, vert, similar650 °C/9.5 kbar; ca. 620 Ma) postdates nappe emplacement. Isograds are in normal position, micaschists passing downwards to migmatites in the northwestern part of the area studied. The rock types in the lower part of this nappe suggest active margin environments with detrital input from a nearby continental crust (arc or back-arc context).

Abstract

The pozzolanic activity of four heated powders containing different clays has been tested. Mineral transformations during calcination from 20 to 900 °C have been followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Compressive strength tests were performed at 1, 7 and 28 days on cement-clay mortars using 30% of pozzolanic material as a replacement by mass for cement. Calcination temperatures corresponded to the stages of potentially high reactivity identified by XRD. Results indicated that there exists incompatibility between clay minerals which can not be activated at the same temperatures. Products of recrystallisation of the earlier activated clay were already formed when the second clay type was activated. Concerning the type and the abundance of clay minerals in the raw material, this study evidences that the compressive strength is, at first approximation, correlated with the percentage of activated clay and less with the nature of the clay assemblage.

International audience; We have measured Pb diffusivity in synthetic NdPO4 crystals from an epitaxial Nd0.66Pb0.17Th0.17PO4 thin film deposited on (?1 0 1) faces. Annealings were performed at room pressure at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1500 °C for 1 h to 1 month. Samples were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). TEM demonstrates that Pb and Th diffuse together from the thin film towards the crystal and Nd in the opposite direction, according to the interdiffusion exchange Pb+Th?2Nd. RBS was used to perform depth profiling of all samples. Measured diffusivities follow the Arrhenius law: logD0(ms)=-3.41±0.77, E=509±24kJmol. The extrapolation of these data to crustal temperatures yield very low diffusivities. For instance, the time necessary for a 50 ?m grain to lose all of its Pb at 800 °C is calculated to be greater than the age of the Earth. From these results and other evidence from the literature, we conclude that most of the perturbations in U Th Pb ages of monazite cannot be attributed to Pb diffusion, but rather to interactions with fluids.

Abstract

Spectacular alteration of monazite by diagenetic/hydrothermal brines is well documented in some Proterozoic sedimentary basins in close relationship with high-grade uranium (U) deposits. Hence, monazite has been proposed as a viable source for some U deposits. However, monazite alteration remains enigmatic with regard to its high stability in relatively low temperature hydrothermal conditions. Here, the results of batch experiments in which 10 mg of natural monazite grains were reacted with 15 mL of Na-Ca-Cl (6 molal Cl) solutions as well as in pure water at 150 °C and saturated vapor pressure (psat) for one and six months are reported. The influence of pH (pH = 1, 3, 7) and relative molar proportions of Na and Ca (Na/(Na + Ca) = 0, 0.5, 1), were tested. Discrete alteration features (etch pits and roughened surfaces) appear in a minority of the one month experiments and are more developed in the six months experiments, especially at pH = 1 and 3. Although spectacular alteration of monazite, as seen around U deposits, could not be reproduced here, this study shows that monazite is unstable in the presence of fluids analogous to acidic deep basinal brines.
