Abstract

In the framework of the European Optimised Microturbine Solar Power system (OMSoP) project, a novel energy system for solar electricity production was developed, based on the integration of the solar dish technology with Micro Gas Turbines (MGT). A pilot plant with a capacity of 5-7 kW(e) was realized and installed at the ENEA Casaccia site (Rome) and went under testing to validate the feasibility of the technology and improve the current design. The present work deals with the development of a quasi-state system model, built in the Engineering Equation Solver environment, composed of different modules that correspond to the main system components. The system model was used to define the optimal system parameters, to help the elaboration on an operational strategy to maximize the overall plant efficiency, and to guide the improvement of the single components in view of their optimised design. From the analysis it emerged that the system in design conditions is able to generate, in nominal conditions, 4.5 kW(e) instead of the expected 5 kW(e) due to the limitation of the stator current to 13 A, while maximum levels of 5.6 kW could be achieved by "overcharging" the high-speed generator up to 15 A and operating the MGT at the very high speed of 150 krpm. From the transient simulation of the demo system on an annual basis, the maximum average output power is 3.58 kW(e). Regarding the cycle efficiency, the annual averaged value is about 17%, whereas the target value is 21%. The improvement of the generator only does not seem to significantly increase the power output on the annual basis (3.75 kW(e) vs. 3.58 kW(e)). Abstract

At the Transparent Materials Laboratory of the Italian Agency for Energy, New Technologies and Environment, the characterization of advanced transparent materials (CATRAM) facility permits the optical characteristics of transparent advanced materials to be evaluated, a procedure for which spectrophotometers are not adequate. The CATRAM facility is based mainly on a large-diameter integrating sphere to perform transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance measurements. We describe the measurement procedures and verify the reliability of the facility by comparing the results obtained for several samples with those from other laboratories. Furthermore, some system implementations for improvement of accuracy are discussed.

Abstract

Based on the recently patented Visual Inspection Method (VIM), a new instrument, named Visual Inspection System Field (VISfield) has been developed and successfully tested on the PCS, the experimental parabolic-trough of ENEA Casaccia. The VISfield inspects one module (12 m length) at time, providing in less than two minutes: i) intercept factor (IF) map; ii) average IF, global and individualized for any facet mirrors; iii) adjustment at the fixing-points of any facet mirrors to improve its IF. Finally, after the alignment optimization, the refreshed IF map represents an useful tool to check the shape compliance of each facet mirrors. For that, VISfield completely satisfies item 2).

Abstract

The most relevant parameter to properly characterize solar mirrors is the solar-weighted near-specular reflectance. As this parameter cannot be directly measured with off-the-shelf instruments, a simplified procedure to be applied for highly specular solar mirrors is proposed in this paper. The approach, based on two criteria, was experimentally employed to check a wide variety of solar reflector materials. Abstract

The aim of LUMEN collaboration was the investigation on single crystals of PbWO4 ( PWO): the results performed up to now provide the evidence of the possibility to optimise the optical properties of an intrinsic scintillator such as PWO. The control of essential requirements in the crystal preparation ( raw material purity, growing methods and post-growth annealing) as well as the introduction of selected dopants at suitable concentrations ( particularly trivalent and pentavalent ions) were found to be very successful in lowering the concentration of point defects in the lattice which strongly affect scintillation properties and radiation hardness. The systematic investigation effort to better understand the scintillation characteristics and to improve the quality of PWO crystals is due to their use for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter.

Abstract

The aim of the LUMEN co-operation, supported by INFN, is to obtain ful experimental characterisation and deep expertise of heavy scintillator for high energy physics. The advantage of this collaboration was mainly in the complementary character of the experimental techniques available in the partner laboratories and in the availability of highly experienced scientists indifferent fields. Furthermore close feedback to technological laboratories preparing on request PWO samples appeared extremely helpful. The present paper reports on the most important results obtained during the LUMEN activity in 1996-97. The aim of the report is to provide also enough useful information for the PWO application and novel ideas to stimulate further interest for new detectors as well as application in different fields.

Abstract

The light produced in each of the 60 thousand PWO crystals of the CMS barrel electromagnetic calorimeter will be readout by Avalanche Photodiodes ( APD). The ratio detected to emitted photons also depends on the PWO//APD gluing quality that must be checked before the crystal mounting in the calorimeter. In this paper two different tools are proposed: one for the visual inspection of the glue layer and the other for the quantitative evaluation of transmittance improvement when the glue replaces the air at the PWO//APD interface. Both the instruments are rugged and cheap. A sequence of operations and checks on the gluing to be done in the Regional Centres is proposed.

Abstract

This work deals with the optical characterization of the surface of EG&G and Hamamatsu APD's and performance of an antireflection coating made of Y2O3 and deposited on a PWO test piece. The effectiveness of antireflection treatments of PWO and Si surfaces is evaluated in a simplified and a realistic situation by means of the ratio of "detected to emitted photons". The complex refractive index of the Dow Corning 02-3067 optical grease is also reported.

Abstract

The optical damage induced by UV light in PbWO4 crystals is found to be similar to that induced by g radiation. Due to the peculiarities of optical absorption in PbWO4, the damage induced by UV light is a bulk process. This fact has important consequences for the approach to be adopted both for the use of the crystal as scintillator and for the qualification methods foreseen in the Regional Centres of the ECAL CMS Collaboration.
