La détermination de la capacité de charge est établie pour permettre une utilisation durable des écosystèmes aquatiques tout en maximisant le profit par rapport à la production aquacole. L’objectif de cette étude est de déterminer la capacité de charge en poisson, du complexe lagunaire Toho-Todougba surtout du fait qu’il fait déjà l’objet d’une exploitation intense de production aquacole sans qu’aucune étude préalable n’ait été effectuée. En effet, la concentration en phosphore ainsi que les paramètres hydrologiques et hydrobiologiques ont été mesurées pendant douze mois. La variation spatio-temporelle des paramètres physico-chimiques a été présentée et la capacité de charge a été déterminée en suivant la méthode de Dillon et Rigler (1974). Il en résulte que les paramètres physicochimiques sont recommandables pour les ressources halieutiques malgré les variations constatées par endroit. La capacité de charge déterminée pour la production de tilapia est de 7315,9413 t.an-1. Cependant, cette capacité est de loin ce qui est supportable par l’écosystème puisqu’on considère que le niveau actuel de production est zéro alors que des centaines de cages sont déjà en production. En conséquence, d’autres pisciculteurs peuvent installer leurs unités de production sur le complexe tout en ayant comme référence infranchissable la capacité de charge déterminée. English title: Physico-chemical characteristics and complementary carrying capacity of the lagoon complex Toho-Todougba (south-west, Benin) The determination of the carrying capacity is established by Dillon and Rigler to allow a sustainable use of the aquatic ecosystems while drawing the maximum profit from the aquaculture production. The objective of this study is to determine the fish carrying capacity of the Toho-Todougba lagoon complex, especially since it is increasingly being intensively exploited for aquaculture production without any prior study having been conducted. Indeed, the phosphorus concentration of the ecosystem was measured during twelve months as well as the hydrological and hydrobiological parameters. The spatio-temporal variation of the physico-chemical parameters was presented and the carrying capacity was determined following the method of Dillon and Rigler. The result is that the physico-chemical parameters are viable for the fishery resources despite the variations observed in some places. The carrying capacity determined for tilapia production is 7315.9413 tons.year-1. However, this capacity is by far what is sustainable for the ecosystem since the current level of production is considered to be zero while hundreds of cages are already in production on the lagoon. Consequently, other fish farmers can install their production units on the complex for fish production while having as an impassable reference the determined carrying capacity. The African freshwater oyster Etheria elliptica, which is of great economic importance throughout the continent, is facing overharvesting in many fisheries in West Africa. Its reproductive traits (sex ratio, size at sexual maturity, oocyte diameter and fecundity) were studied at four stations located along the Pendjari River, northern Benin, in April 2013. Histological techniques were implemented to identify sex and gonad development stages. Oocyte sizes were measured based on the histological images and mean oocyte diameter was 38 μm. Fecundity, estimated by counting the developing eggs, averaged 106 724 eggs and increased significantly with shell size. The average sex ratio was approximately 1:1. Hermaphrodites were rare. Males reached sexual maturity at 57.6 mm dorsoventral height, earlier than females at 64.7 mm. The majority of the oyster specimens were in ripe-spawning stages, indicating that reproductive activities partly took place towards the end of the dry season. Both mature and immature individuals were subjected to harvesting at all the investigated fishing sites. The mean size of exploited oysters was 60.6 mm, lower than the size of females at maturity. Management strategies must enforce the minimum size of 65 mm required for harvesting, particularly in open access sites where juveniles are mostly harvested.Keywords: fecundity, oocyte diameter, reproductive biology, size-at-maturity

The study aims to evaluate the acute and chronic toxicity of cypermethrin and glyphosate to a freshwater’s copepod, Arcanthocyclops robustus. The acute sensibility was assessed by estimating lethal concentrations. Then the chronic exposure allowed to assess the effects of low concentrations (0.2489 ppb and 0.4978 ppb respectively 10 % and 20 % of LC50 at 48 h of cypermethrin and 1.3 ppm and 2.6 ppm respectively for glyphosate) on the species. The estimated lethal concentrations at 1%, 50 % and 99 % were 2.353 ppb, 4.755 ppb and 9.610 ppb in 24 h, respectively 0.567 ppb, 2.489 ppb and 10.929 ppb in 48 h for cypermethrin. Regarding glyphosate, the lethal concentrations 1 %, 50 % and 99% were 5 ppm, 19 ppm and 73 ppm in 24 h, respectively 8 ppm, 13 ppm and 21 ppm in 48-h. hatching was affected by 20 % LC50 of cypermethrin; only 20 % of females have hatched their eggs against 60 % in the control treatment. Females and nauplii survival was affected by both pesticides. A. robustus is then more sensitive to cypermethrin compared to glyphosate. La stratégie de reproduction et la structure des populations chez Labeo parvus ont été étudiées dans le bassin du fleuve Ouémé (Bénin) entre avril 2005 et mars 2006. Les poissons ont été capturés mensuellement par des pêcheurs professionnels au moyen de filets maillants. Les filets sont posés le soir et relevés le lendemain matin. La structure démographique de L. parvus a été examinée sur la base de la distribution des fréquences de tailles. La stratégie de reproduction a été étudiée à partir de l’indice gonadosomatique (IGS), la structure ovarienne et la fécondité. Les populations de L. parvus présentent une structure par tailles de type bimodal. Le premier mode est représenté par les juvéniles 0 + (≤ 9 cm LT) issus de la reproduction de l’année. Le deuxième mode est constitué des géniteurs (13-28 cm LT). Sur 1 088 spécimens collectés dans le fleuve Ouémé, 14,9 % sont des juvéniles (< 9 cm LT), 6 % pré-adultes (9-13 cm LT) et 79,1 % adultes (> 13 cm LT). L’analyse de la structure ovarienne montre un développement synchrone des ovocytes avec la présence de deux cohortes conduisant à une ponte. La saison de reproduction est comprise entre juillet et octobre correspondant à la crue fluviale maximale dans le bassin avec une forte fécondité (8 723 à 124 363 ovules). L. parvus est une espèce potamodrome, géniteur synchrone qui se concentre dans le fleuve avant de migrer pendant les crues fluviales dans les plaines inondables pour pondre.Mots Clés : Labeo parvus, structure des populations, reproduction, fleuve Ouémé, BéninReproductive strategy and population structure of Labeo parvus were studied in the Ouémé basin in Benin between April 2005 and March 2006. The fish were captured monthly by professional fishermen using gill nets. The nets were set up in the late afternoon and retrieved the following morning. The population size structure was examined using the length frequency distribution. The reproductive strategy was investigated using the gonadosomatic index (GSI), ovarian structure and fecundity. The population of L. parvus has a bimodal size structure. The first mode is represented by the juvenile 0 + (< 9 cm LT) resulting from the reproduction of the year. The second mode is consisted by the spawners (13-28 cm LT). On the 1088 specimens collected in the Ouémé basin, 14.9 % are the juvenile (< 9 cm TL), 6% the subadults (9-13 cm TL) and 79.1 % the adults (> 13 cm TL). The analysis of the ovarian structure shows a synchronous development of the oocytes with the presence of two cohorts leading to a single spawning per season. The reproductive season lies between July and October corresponding to the river rising in the basin with a high fecundity (8723 to 124363 ovules). L. parvus is a potamodromous species, synchronous spawner who concentrates in the river before migrating during the river risings in the easily floodplains to spawn.Keywords : Labeo parvus, population structure, reproductive strategy, Ouémé River, Benin.Article in French.

Dans le but de contribuer à la domestication de Labeo parvus, les effets de deux milieux d’élevage sur la croissance et la survie des juvéniles de l’espèce ont été évalués en aquariums. L’expérimentation a été menéeen duplicat dans 4 aquariums en deux groupes de poissons. Le premier groupe de poissons (G1) a été élevé dans 2 aquariums à fond couvert de substrat de sable fin à 2 cm d’épaisseur. Le second groupe de poissons(G2) a été élevé dans 2 aquariums sans substrat de sable. Dans chaque aquarium, 20 juvéniles de poids moyen de 1,73 ± 0,01 g et de longueur totale moyenne de 5,39 ± 0,01 cm ont été introduits. La conduite de l’élevage a été la même pour tous les groupes. Au bout de 35 jours, les meilleures performances de croissance ont été enregistrées avec les poissons maintenus sur substrat de sable avec un poids moyen final de 3,20 ± 0,27 g et une longueur totale moyenne finale de 6,78 ± 0,24 cm contre 2,36 ± 0,22 g et 6, 08 ± 0,24 cm pour les poissons maintenus dans les aquariums sans sable. Le taux de croissance spécifique de 1,74 ±1,10%/j chez les poissons du G1 a été supérieur à celui de 0,90 ± 0,51%/j chez les poissons du G2 (p < 0,05). Aucune mortalité n’a étéenregistrée dans les deux milieux d’élevage. A histological analysis was undertaken on the gonad development ofLabeo parvus Boulenger 1902, a medium-sized cyprinid from the Ouémé River, Benin. Samples were collected monthly between April 2006 and March 2007 and were examined using routine macroscopic and histological techniques. Five macroscopic stages of gonad maturation were identified in the ovaries and testes and described histologically. Oocyte development was subdivided into five stages, based on the presence of chromatin nucleolus oocytes, perinucleolus oocytes, yolk vesicle oocytes, vitellogenic oocytes and mature oocytes. Four stages of spermatogenesis (spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa) were observed. Comparisons of macroscopic and histological observations revealed that the temporal patterns of maturation activity obtained from visual examination closely reflected the seasonal histological trend in gonad development. Histological characteristics of spent ovaries and testes were similar to those of immature fish, indicating thatL. parvus were synchronous iteroparous spawners.African Journal of Aquatic Science 2012, 37(2): 155–163
