Hyaluronan (HA) is among the most used biopolymers for viscosupplementation and cosmetic applications. However, the current injectable HA-based formulations present relevant limitations: I) unmodified HA is quickly degraded by endogenous hyaluronidases (HAase), resulting in short lasting properties; II) cross-linked HA, although shows enhanced stability against HAase, often contains toxic chemical cross-linkers. As such, herein, we present biocompatible self-assembled hyaluronan-cholesterol nanohydrogels (HA-CH NHs) able to bind to HAase and inhibit the enzyme activity in vitro, more efficiently than currently marketed HA-based cross-linked formulations (e.g. JonexaTM). HA-CH NHs inhibit HAase through a mixed mechanism, by which NHs bind to HAase with an affinity constant 7-fold higher than that of HA. Similar NHs, based on gellan-cholesterol, evidenced no binding to HAase, neither inhibition of the enzyme activity, suggesting this effect might be due to the specific binding of HA-CH to the active site of the enzyme. Between the launch of the \textit{GGS Wind} spacecraft in 1994 November and the end of 2010, the Konus-\textit{Wind} experiment detected 296 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (including 23 bursts which can be classified as short bursts with extended emission). During this period, the IPN consisted of up to eleven spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 271 bursts were obtained. We present the most comprehensive IPN localization data on these events. The short burst detection rate, $\sim$18 per year, exceeds that of many individual experiments., Comment: Published version

The emission process responsible for the so-called "prompt" emission of gamma-ray bursts is still unknown. A number of empirical models fitting the typical spectrum still lack a satisfactory interpretation. A few GRB spectral catalogues derived from past and present experiments are known in the literature and allow to tackle the issue of spectral properties of gamma-ray bursts on a statistical ground. We extracted and studied the time-integrated photon spectra of the 200 brightest GRBs observed with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor which flew aboard the BeppoSAX mission (1996-2002) to provide an independent statistical characterisation of GRB spectra. The spectra were fit with three models: a simple power-law, a cut-off power law or a Band function. The typical photon spectrum of a bright GRB consists of a low-energy index around 1.0 and a peak energy of the nuFnu spectrum E_p~240 keV in agreement with previous results on a sample of bright CGRO/BATSE bursts. Spectra of ~35% of GRBs can be fit with a power-law with a photon index around 2, indicative of peak energies either close to or outside the GRBM energy boundaries. We confirm the correlation between E_p and fluence, with a logarithmic dispersion of 0.13 around the power-law with index 0.21+-0.06. The low-energy and peak energy distributions are not yet explained in the current literature. Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 475 bursts were obtained. We report on the catalog of Gamma--Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. It includes 1082 GRBs with 40--700 keV fluences in the range from $1.3\times 10^{-7}$ to $4.5\times 10^{-4}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, and with 40--700 keV peak fluxes from $3.7\times 10^{-8}$ to $7.0\times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. During our Swift/XRT program to obtain X-ray positions at arcsecond level for a sample of Galactic X-ray binaries, we discovered that SAX J0840.7+2248 is not a binary, but rather BeppoSAX/WFC+GRBM X-ray Rich GRB 980429. We have used the Ep,i-Eiso correlation of GRBs to measure the cosmological parameter Omega_M. By adopting a maximum likelihood approach which allows us to correctly quantify the extrinsic (i.e. non--Poissonian) scatter of the correlation, we constrain (for a flat universe) Omega_M to 0.04-0.40 (68% confidence level), with a best fit value of Omega_M ~ 0.15, and exclude Omega_M = 1 at 99.9% confidence level. If we release the assumption of a flat universe, we still find evidence for a low value of Omega_M (0.04-0.50 at 68% confidence level) and a weak dependence of the dispersion of the Ep,i-Eiso correlation on Omega_Lambda (with an upper limit of Omega_Lambda ~ 1.15 at 90% confidence level). Our approach makes no assumptions on the Ep,i-Eiso correlation and it does not use other calibrators to set the "zero' point of the relation, therefore our treatment of the data is not affected by circularity and the results are independent of those derived via type Ia SNe (or other cosmological probes). Unlike other multi-parameters correlations, our analysis grounds on only two parameters, then including a larger number (a factor ~3) of GRBs and being less affected by systematics. Simulations based on realistic extrapolations of ongoing (and future) GRB experiments (e.g., Swift, Konus-Wind, GLAST) show that: i) the uncertainties on cosmological parameters can be significantly decreased; ii) future data will allow us to get clues on the "dark energy" evolution., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, revised version, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using a sample of 14 BeppoSAX and 74 Swift GRBs with measured redshift we tested the correlation between the intrinsic peak energy of the time-integrated spectrum, E_p,i, the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity, L_p,iso, and the duration of the most intense parts of the GRB computed as T_0.45 ("Firmani correlation"). For 41 out of 88 GRBs we could estimate all of the three required properties. Apart from 980425, which appears to be a definite outlier and notoriously peculiar in many respects, we used 40 GRBs to fit the correlation with the maximum likelihood method discussed by D'Agostini, suitable to account for the extrinsic scatter in addition to the intrinsic uncertainties affecting every single GRB. We confirm the correlation. However, unlike the results by Firmani et al., we found that the correlation does have a logarithmic scatter comparable with that of the E_p,i-E_iso ("Amati") correlation. We also find that the slope of the product L_p,iso T_0.45 is equal to ~0.5, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the E_p,i-L_p,iso-T_0.45 correlation is equivalent to the E_p,i-E_iso correlation (slope ~0.5). We conclude that, based on presently available data, there is no clear evidence that the E_p,i-L_p,iso-T_0.45 correlation is different (both in terms of slope and dispersion) from the E_p,i-E_iso correlation., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, revised version submitted to MNRAS

The structural properties of BiMn$O_3$ were determined from neutron powder diffraction data as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The structure at all temperatures was found to be centrosymmetric with space group $C2/c$, which is incompatible with ferroelectricity. At T$_C\simeq 100 K$, we observed the onset of a large magnetoelastic strain, proportional to the square of the magnetization. We interpret this structural rearrangement, together with the previously observed magnetodielectric anomalies, as due to the need to optimize the partially frustrated magnetic interactions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Based on the analysis of a small sample of BATSE and Konus gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with know redshift it has been reported that the width of the autocorrelation function (ACF) shows a remarkable bimodal distribution in the rest-frame of the source. However, the origin of these two well-separated ACF classes remains unexplained.We complement previous ACF analysis studying the corresponding power density spectra (PDS). With the addition of Beppo-SAX data and taken advantage of its broad-band capability, we not only increase the burst sample but we extend the analysis to X-ray energies. The rest-frame PDS analysis at gamma-ray energies shows that the two ACF classes are not simply characterised by a different low frequency cut-off, but they have a distinct variability as a whole in the studied frequency range. Both classes exhibit average PDS with power-law behaviour at high frequencies (f' > 0.1 Hz) but significantly different slopes, with index values close to those of Brownian (-2) and Kolmogorov (-5/3) spectra for the narrow and broad classes respectively. The latter spectrum presents an additional PDS component, a low-frequency noise excess with a sharp cut-off. At X-ray energies we find the power-law index unchanged for the broad class, but a significantly steeper slope in the narrow case (~ -3). We interpret this as an indication that the broad class bursts have weaker spectral evolution than the narrow ones, as suggested also by our analysis of the ACF energy dependence. The low and high frequency PDS components may then arise from two radiating regions involving different emission mechanisms., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

We analyze and discuss the position of GRB 060218 and GRB 060614 in the Ep,i - Eiso plane. GRB 060218 is important because of its similarity with GRB 980425, the proto-type event of the GRB-SN connection. While GRB 980425 is an outlier of the Ep,i - Eiso correlation, we find that GRB 060218 is fully consistent with it. This evidence, combined with the `chromatic' behavior of the afterglow light curves, is at odds with the hypothesis that GRB 060218 was a `standard' GRB seen off-axis and supports the existence of a class of truly sub--energetic GRBs. GRB 060614 is a peculiar event not accompanied by a bright Supernova. Based on published spectral information, we find that also this event is consistent with the Ep,i - Eiso correlation. We discuss the implications of our results for the rate of sub--energetic GRBs, the GRB/SN connection and the properties of the newly discovered sub-class of long GRBs not associated with bright Supernovae. From a sample of 32 GRBs with known redshift (Guidorzi et al. 2005) and then a sample of 551 BATSE GRBs with derived pseudo-redshift (Guidorzi 2005), the time variability/peak luminosity correlation (V vs. L) found by Reichart et al. (2001) was tested. For both samples the correlation is still found but less relevant due to a much higher spread of the data. Assuming a straight line in the logL-logV plane (logL = m logV + b), as done by Reichart et al., the slope was found lower than that derived by Reichart et al.: m = 1.3_{-0.4}^{+0.8} (Guidorzi et al. 2005), m = 0.85 +- 0.02 (Guidorzi 2005), to be compared with m = 3.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9} (Reichart et al. 2001). Reichart & Nysewander (2005) attribute the different slope to the fact we do not take into account in the fit the variance of the sample, and demonstrate that, using the method by Reichart (2001), the data set of Guidorzi et al. (2005) in logL-logV plane is still well described with slope m = 3.4^{+0.9}_{-0.6}. Here we compare the results of two methods accounting for the variance of the sample, that implemented by Reichart (2001) and that by D'Agostini (2005). We demonstrate that the method by Reichart (2001) provides an inconsistent estimate of the slope when the sample variance is comparable with the interval of values covered by the variability. We also show that, using the D'Agostini method, the slope is consistent with that derived by us earlier and inconsistent with that derived by Reichart & Nysewander (2005). Finally we discuss the implications on the interpretations and show that our results are in agreement with the peak energy/variability correlation found by Lloyd-Ronning & Ramirez-Ruiz (2002) and the peak energy/peak luminosity correlation (Yonetoku et al. 2004; Ghirlanda et al. 2005) [abridged]., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Lobster-ISS is an X-ray all-sky monitor experiment selected by ESA two years ago for a Phase A study (now almost completed) for a future flight (2009) aboard the Columbus Exposed Payload Facility of the International Space Station. The main instrument, based on MCP optics with Lobster-eye geometry, has an energy passband from 0.1 to 3.5 keV, an unprecedented daily sensitivity of 2x10^{-12} erg cm^{-2}s$^{-1}, and it is capable to scan, during each orbit, the entire sky with an angular resolution of 4--6 arcmin. This X-ray telescope is flanked by a Gamma Ray Burst Monitor, with the minimum requirement of recognizing true GRBs from other transient events. In this paper we describe the GRBM. In addition to the minimum requirement, the instrument proposed is capable to roughly localize GRBs which occur in the Lobster FOV (162x22.5 degrees) and to significantly extend the scientific capabilities of the main instrument for the study of GRBs and X-ray transients. The combination of the two instruments will allow an unprecedented spectral coverage (from 0.1 up to 300/700 keV) for a sensitive study of the GRB prompt emission in the passband where GRBs and X-Ray Flashes emit most of their energy. The low-energy spectral band (0.1-10 keV) is of key importance for the study of the GRB environment and the search of transient absorption and emission features from GRBs, both goals being crucial for unveiling the GRB phenomenon. The entire energy band of Lobster-ISS is not covered by either the Swift satellite or other GRB missions foreseen in the next decade., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We report test results of the correlation between time variability and peak luminosity of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), using a larger sample (32) of GRBs with known redshift than that available to Reichart et al. (2001), and using as variability measure that introduced by these authors. The results are puzzling. Assuming an isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity, as done by Reichart et al. (2001), a correlation is still found, but it is less relevant, and inconsistent with a power law as previously reported. Assuming as peak luminosity that corrected for GRB beaming for a subset of 16 GRBs with known beaming angle, the correlation becomes little less significant., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS, accepted

Recent observations suggest that some types of GRB are physically connected with SNe of type Ib/c. However, it has been pointed out by several authors that some GRBs could be associated also with other types of core-collapse SNe (type IIdw/IIn). On the basis of a comphrensive statistical study, which has made use of the BATSE and Asiago catalogues, we have found that: i) the temporal and spacial distribution of SNe-Ib/c is marginally correlated with that of the BATSE GRBs; ii) we do not confirm the existence of an association between GRBs and SNe-IIdw/IIn., Comment: Proceeding of the 4th workshop on Gamma Ray Bursts in the Afterglow Era, Rome, 2004; 4 pages

We report on BeppoSAX simultaneous X- and gamma-ray observations of the bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990123. We present the broad-band spectrum of the prompt emission, including optical, X- and gamma-rays, confirming the suggestion that the emission mechanisms at low and high frequencies must have different physical origins. We discuss the X-ray afterglow observed by the Narrow Field Instruments (NFIs) on board BeppoSAX and its hard X-ray emission up to 60 keV several hours after the burst, in the framework of the standard fireball model. We report on BeppoSAX simultaneous X- and gamma-ray observations of the bright GRB 990123. We present the broad-band spectrum of the prompt emission, including optical, X- and gamma-rays, confirming the suggestion that the emission mechanisms at low and high frequencies must have different physical origins. In the framework of the standard fireball model, we discuss the X-ray afterglow observed by the NFIs and its hard X-ray emission up to 60 keV several hours after the burst, detected for about 20 ks by the PDS. Considering the 2-10 keV and optical light curves, the 0.1-60 keV spectrum during the 20 ks in which the PDS signal was present and the 8.46 GHz upper limits, we find that the multi-wavelength observations cannot be readily accommodated by basic afterglow models. While the temporal and spectral behavior of the optical afterglow is possibly explained by a synchrotron cooling frequency between the optical and the X-ray energy band during the NFIs observations, in X-rays this assumption only accounts for the slope of the 2-10 keV light curve, but not for the flatness of the 0.1-60 keV spectrum. Including the contribution of Inverse Compton (IC) scattering, we solve the problem of the flat X-ray spectrum and justify the hard X-ray emission; we suggest that the lack of a significant detection of 15-60 keV emission in the following 75 ks and last 70 ks spectra, should be related to poorer statistics rather than to an important suppression of IC contribution. However, considering also the radio band data, we find the 8.46 GHz upper limits violated. On the other hand, leaving unchanged the emission mechanism requires modifying the hydrodynamics by invoking an ambient medium whose density rises rapidly with radius and by having the shock losing energy. We report on the BeppoSAX data analysis of the afterglow of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990123, one of the brightest GRBs detected by BeppoSAX. Mainly due to its exceptional brightness, this is the only source for which the Wide Field Cameras have allowed an early detection of the X-ray afterglow between about 20 and 60 min after the GRB trigger. Besides, again for the first time, high-energy emission from the afterglow was detected up to 60 keV. For the X-ray afterglow we found a power-law decay with index alpha = 1.46 +/- 0.04; the spectrum has a power-law shape with photon index Gamma about 1.9. The backward extrapolation of the afterglow decay smoothly reconnects with the late GRB emission, thus suggesting that both emissions are produced by the same phenomenon. An extensive set of multiwavelength observations for the GRB 990123 afterglow made during the BeppoSAX pointing was collected from the literature. The hard X-ray to radio range coverage allowed to construct a spectral flux distribution and to perform an analysis of the GRB afterglow in the context of the "fireball" model. We also report the results of temporal and spectral analysis of an X-ray source serendipitously observed about 22 arcmin north of the GRB afterglow, along with the optical spectroscopy of its possible counterpart to establish the nature of this source., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. In this paper we present BeppoSax and XMM observations of two long Gamma-ray bursts, the X-ray rich event of December 11, 2001 (GRB011211) and the hard and very bright event of November 21, 2001 (GRB011121). In both events we find evidence of a late X-ray burst, taking place several minutes after the prompt emission. The temporal and spectral behaviour of this phenomenon suggest that it represents the onset of the afterglow. Broad band spectral modelling of the afterglow indicate that the fireball evolution in the December burst takes place in a ISM environment. On the contrary in the November burst the wind case is revealed by an X-ray decay slower than that observed in the optical ($\delta_{\rm X}=1.29\pm0.04$ vs $\delta_{\rm O}=1.66\pm0.06$). The wind profile should change into a constant density profile at large radii, in order to reconcile late-time radio data with a jet. Two other results are obtained for this burst. An X-ray burst is preceding by about 30 s the much harder GRB. Contrary to the prediction of simple models of precursor activity for collapsars, its spectrum is not consistent with a black body. Finally, a substantial absorption column ($\NH=(7\pm2)\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) is detected during the early part of the prompt emission. This is much greater than that of the wind, and it is thus likely associated with the region surrounding the burst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We present Interplanetary Network (IPN) detection and localization information for 211 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed as untriggered events by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), and published in catalogs by Kommers et al. (2001) and Stern et al. (2001). IPN confirmations have been obtained by analyzing the data from 11 experiments. For any given burst observed by BATSE and one other distant spacecraft, arrival time analysis (or ``triangulation'') results in an annulus of possible arrival directions whose half-width varies between 14 arcseconds and 5.6 degrees, depending on the intensity, time history, and arrival direction of the burst, as well as the distance between the spacecraft. This annulus generally intersects the BATSE error circle, resulting in a reduction of the area of up to a factor of ~650. When three widely separated spacecraft observed a burst, the result is an error box whose area is as much as 30000 times smaller than that of the BATSE error circle. Because the IPN instruments are considerably less sensitive than BATSE, they generally did not detect the weakest untriggered bursts, but did detect the more intense ones which failed to trigger BATSE when the trigger was disabled. In a few cases, we have been able to identify the probable origin of bursts as soft gamma repeaters. The vast majority of the IPN-detected events, however, are GRBs, and the confirmation of them validates many of the procedures utilized to detect BATSE untriggered bursts., Comment: Minor revisions. The statistical association between the output of the Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors EXPLORER and NAUTILUS and a list of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by the satellite experiments BATSE and BeppoSAX has been analyzed using cumulative algorithms. GW detector data collected between 1991 and 1999 have been correlated to the GRB flux peak times. The cumulative analysis of a large number of GRBs (387) allows to push the upper bound for the corresponding GW burst amplitude down to $h = 2.5\cdot10^{-19}$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; minor corrections, added references. We report on observation results of the prompt X- and gamma-ray emission from GRB011211. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The optical counterpart to the GRB was soon identified and its redshift determined (z = 2.140), while with the XMM-Newton satellite, the X-ray afterglow emission was detected. Evidence of soft X-ray emission lines was reported by Reeves et al. (2002), but not confirmed by other authors. In investigating the spectral evolution of the prompt emission we find the possible evidence of a transient absorption feature at 6.9^{+0.6}_{-0.5} keV during the rise of the primary event. The significance of the feature is derived with non parametric tests and numerical simulations, finding a chance probability which ranges from 3x10^{-3} down to 4x10^{-4}. The feature shows a Gaussian profile and an equivalent width of 1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.6} keV. We discuss our results and their possible interpretation., Comment: 23 pages, 3 Tables, 6 Figures. We report on the X-ray observations of the X-ray flash (XRF) which occurred on 2002 April 27, three days before BeppoSAX was switched off. The event was detected with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras but not with the Gamma ray Burst Monitor. A follow-up observation with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments was soon performed and a candidate afterglow source was discovered. We present the results obtained. We also include the results obtained from the observations of the XRF field with the Chandra X-ray satellite. The spectral analysis of the prompt emission shows that the peak energy of the EF(E) spectrum is lower than 5.5 keV, with negligible spectral evolution. The X-ray afterglow spectrum is consistent with a power law model with photon index of about 2, while the 2-10 keV flux fades as a power law with a decay index -1.33. Both these indices are typical of GRBs. A very marginal excess around 4.5-5 keV is found in the afterglow spectrum measured by BeppoSAX . As for many GRBs, the extrapolation of the 2-10 keV fading law back to the time of the prompt emission is consistent with the X-ray flux measured during the second part of the event. We report observation results of the prompt X-- and $\gamma$--ray emission from GRB 000528. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the two Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The GRB was promptly followed on with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments and with ground optical and radio telescopes. The X-ray afterglow source was identified, but no optical or radio counterpart found. We report here results from the prompt and afterglow emission analysis. The main feature derived from spectral evolution of the prompt emission is a high hydrogen-equivalent column density with evidence of its decrease with time. We model this behavior in terms of a time-dependent photoionization of the local circum-burst medium, finding that a compact and dense environment is required by the data. We also find a fading of the late part of the 2--10 keV prompt emission which is consistent with afterglow emission. We report on spectral and temporal results of the 40-700 keV observations, obtained with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GRBM) on board BeppoSAX, of the two large flares from the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR1900+14 occurred on August 27, 1998 and April 18, 2001. From their intensity, fluence and duration, the first one was classified as "giant" and the second as "intermediate". The spectral results have been obtained with an improved response function of the GRBM. We find that the two events have similar spectral properties, but different temporal properties. The major difference concerns the time profiles of the light curves, whereas the lack of evidence in the 2001 flare for the erratic time variability found at high frequencies (10-1000 Hz) in the 1998 flare could be ascribed to lower counting statistics. In an ongoing effort to search for X-ray transients on diverse time scales in the data archive of the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras we have identified four GRBs that are long (between 540 and at least 2550 s) and faint (with 3 events having peak fluxes below 7X10^-9 erg/s/cm2 in 2-10 keV). Three of the events were covered and detected by BATSE, suggesting that there may be a substantial number of bursts still hidden in the BATSE database. A spectral analysis of the three events shows that, although soft, they are not typical X-ray flashes. The fourth event (not covered by BATSE) is within 3' coincident with a double-lobed radio galaxy. The chance probability is estimated at 0.001. We report on the prompt and afterglow emission observations of the dark burst GRB010214 with BeppoSAX. The prompt emission shows possible evidence of variable absorption from N_H = 3.0^{+5.1}_{-2.0} x 10^23 cm-2 in the first 6 s of the event to a value consistent with the Galactic column density (N_H^(G) = 2.66 x 10^20 cm-2) in the GRB direction. An X-ray afterglow emission in the 2-10 keV energy band was detected with BeppoSAX, but an analogue search at lower wavelengths (optical, IR and radio) was unsuccessful. The X-ray afterglow spectrum is consistent with a power-law with Galactic absorption. The light curve shows a complex decay, if the tail of the prompt emission is assumed as the onset of the afterglow: if the origin of the afterglow is coincident with the GRB onset, a bump before ~ 3 x 10^4 s is inferred, while if the afterglow is assumed to start later, a steepening of the power-law light curve at t ~ 3 x 10^4 s is deduced. We discuss these results in the light of the current models of afterglows and the possible origin of the GRB darkness. We present the discovery of GRB 020405 made with the Inter-Planetary Network (IPN). With a duration of 60 s, the burst appears to be a typical long duration event. We observed the 75-square acrminute IPN error region with the Mount Stromlo Observatory's 50-inch robotic telescope and discovered a transient source which subsequently decayed and was also associated with a variable radio source. We identify this source as the afterglow of GRB 020405. Subsequent observations by other groups found varying polarized flux and established a redshift of 0.690 to the host galaxy. Motivated by the low redshift we triggered observations with WFPC2 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Modeling the early ground-based data with a jet model, we find a clear red excess over the decaying optical lightcurves that is present between day 10 and day 141 (the last HST epoch). This `bump' has the spectral and temporal features expected of an underlying supernova (SN). In particular, the red color of the putative SN is similar to that of the SN associated with GRB 011121, at late time. Restricting the sample of GRBs to those with z<0.7, a total of five bursts, red bumps at late times are found in GRB 970228, GRB 011121, and GRB 020405. It is possible that the simplest idea, namely that all long duration GRBs have underlying SNe with a modest dispersion in their properties (especially peak luminosity), is sufficient to explain the non detections., Comment: (Fixing HST data table; thanks to N. Data obtained during five months of 2001 with the gravitational wave (GW) detectors EXPLORER and NAUTILUS were studied in correlation with the gamma ray burst data (GRB) obtained with the BeppoSAX satellite. During this period BeppoSAX was the only GRB satellite in operation, while EXPLORER and NAUTILUS were the only GW detectors in operation. No correlation between the GW data and the GRB bursts was found. The analysis, performed over 47 GRB's, excludes the presence of signals of amplitude h >=1.2 * 10^{-18}, with 95 % probability, if we allow a time delay between GW bursts and GRB within +-400 s, and h >= 6.5 * 10^{-19}, if the time delay is within +- 5 s. The result is also provided in form of scaled likelihood for unbiased interpretation and easier use for further analysis., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. We present the main results of a study of spectral and energetics properties of twelve gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with redshift estimates. All GRBs in our sample were detected by BeppoSAX in a broad energy range (2-700 keV). From the redshift estimates and the good-quality BeppoSAX time-integrated spectra we deduce the main properties of GRBs in their cosmological rest frames. All spectra in our sample are satisfactorily represented by the Band model with no significant soft X-ray excesses or spectral absorptions. We find a positive correlation between the estimated total (isotropic) energies in the 1-10000 keV energy range (E_rad) and redshifts z. Interestingly, more luminous GRBs are characterized also by larger peak energies E_p of their EF(E) spectra. Furthermore, more distant GRBs appear to be systematically harder in the X-ray band compared to GRBs with lower redshifts. Of the cosmological gamma-ray bursts, GRB 011121 has the lowest redshift, z=0.36. More importantly, the multi-color excess in the afterglow detected in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) light curves is compelling observational evidence for an underlying supernova. Here we present near-infrared and radio observations of the afterglow. We undertake a comprehensive modeling of these observations and those reported in the literature and find good evidence favoring a wind-fed circumburst medium. In detail, we infer the progenitor had a mass loss rate of Mdot ~ 10^-7 / v_w3 Mo/yr where v_w3 is the speed of the wind from the progenitor in units of 10^3 km/s. This mass loss rate is similar to that inferred for the progenitor of SN 1998bw which has been associated with GRB 980425. Our data, taken in conjunction with the HST results of Bloom et al. (2002), provide a consistent picture: the long duration GRB 011121 had a massive star progenitor which exploded as a supernova at about the same time as the GRB event., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. The 3rd Interplanetary Network (IPN) has been operating since April 2001 with two distant spacecraft, Ulysses and Mars Odyssey, and numerous near-Earth spacecraft, such as BeppoSAX, Wind, and HETE-II. Mars Odyssey is presently in orbit about Mars, and the network has detected approximately 30 cosmic, SGR, and solar bursts. We present the discovery of the optical transient of the long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB000630. The optical transient was detected with the Nordic Optical Telescope 21.1 hours after the burst. At the time of discovery the magnitude of the transient was R = 23.04+-0.08. The transient displayed a power-law decline characterized by a decay slope of alpha = -1.035+-0.097. A deep image obtained 25 days after the burst shows no indication of a contribution from a supernova or a host galaxy at the position of the transient. The closest detected galaxy is a R=24.68+-0.15 galaxy 2.0 arcsec north of the transient. The magnitudes of the optical afterglows of GRB980329, GRB980613 and GRB000630 were all R>=23 less than 24 hours from the burst epoch. We discuss the implications of this for our understanding of GRBs without detected optical transients. We conclude that i) based on the gamma-ray properties of the current sample we cannot conclude that GRBs with no detected OTs belong to another class of GRBs than GRBs with detected OTs and ii) the majority (>75%) of GRBs for which searches for optical afterglow have been unsuccessful are consistent with no detection if they were similar to bursts like GRB000630 at optical wavelengths., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We report the discovery of a transient equivalent hydrogen column density with an absorption edge at ~3.8 kiloelectron volts in the spectrum of the prompt x-ray emission of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990705. This feature can be satisfactorily modeled with a photoelectric absorption by a medium located at a redshift of ~0.86 and with an iron abundance of ~75 times the solar one. The transient behavior is attributed to the strong ionization produced in the circumburst medium by the GRB photons. The high iron abundance points to the existence of a burst environment enriched by a supernova along the line of sight. The supernova explosion is estimated to have occurred about 10 years before the burst. We discuss observations of the prompt X and gamma-ray emission and X-ray afterglow from GRB981226. This event has the weakest gamma-ray peak flux detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor. It shows an isolated X-ray precursor and the highest X-ray to gamma-ray fluence ratio measured thus far with the Wide Field Cameras. The event was followed up with the Narrow Field Instruments, and the X-ray afterglow was detected up to 10 keV. The afterglow flux is observed to rise from a level below the sensitivity of the MECS/LECS telescopes up to a peak flux of (5 +/-1) * 10^(-13) erg cm-2 s-1, in the 2-10 keV energy band. This rise is followed by a decline according to a power law with index of 1.31 (+0.44,-0.39).
