The model for this portrait has been tentatively identified as Giovanna degli Abruzzi (1468-1488). The orange blossoms in her hand are a traditional adornment of brides, suggesting that this is a marraige portrait. If the sitter is Giovanna degli Abruzzi, then this portrait would have been painted for her 1486 wedding to Lorenzo Tornabuoni.

"For many miles the Vosges ... Mountains mark the boundary line between France and Germany. Along their wooded slopes many desperate encounters occurred early in the war, and throughout the entire period of hostilities their ravines and water courses were alive with alert guards, here French, there German. In this constant watch the searchlight was an invaluable aid. It revealed what was going on in the thickets, for when its rays were concentrated upon a single spot they showed individual men a mile away. It prevented surprise attacks under cover of the night. Sunk in a pit or in a trench such as we see, its beam of light projected into a sloping mirror, it could not be reached by direct fire and its location was difficult to discover. These men are erecting a portable searchlight on the slope of the mountain. We see its base, the rod upon which it is to be fixed, the insulating wire to connect it with the motor, and the light itself in its metal box. Searchlights were used in all sections of the field of war. Large ones were loaded upon wagons which carried a dynamo driven by a gasoline engine and were quickly carried to wherever they were needed. Some of these wagons had collapsible towers which could be run up in a few minutes. A searchlight upon the top of one of those towers gave a much clearer picture than one placed on the ground because it shortened the shadows case by trees and rocks. In London, during the war, great searchlights projected their beams into the sky every night, carefully and thoroughly combing the edges of the clouds for any indications of the dreaded Zeppelins."--Taken from back of resource

"The soldiers of the Allied Nations allowed nothing to stand in their way in their fight to win the world for democracy. No hindrance was found which proved a real one and no obstacle remained insurmountable. probably more difficulties confronted the Italians in their fight among the crags and lofty mountain peaks, the region where their operations were largely conducted, than confronted any other army of the Allies. When the story of Italy is all told it will be found to be one of the most remarkable in history. For two years the army of Italy fought in the air; not in airplanes, but up steep mountain walls and on mountain peaks. Often the enemy were fighting above them with machine guns and artillery which could have blown the Italian forces to pieces. It has been said that while the rest of the Allies fought horizontally, the Italians fought perpendicularly. It is true that heavy batteries and army supplied were carried up precipitous mountains which an Alpine climber would hardly dare try to ascend in time of peace. Some guns were taken to pieces and carried in sections over the mountain passes, as you see the soldiers doing here. Other guns were brought even higher to the mountain tops, requiring many hours of weary work. As the Italian army advanced it swung bridges across chasms, tunneled mountains, made roads and fortifications, and even built an aqueduct. When General Cadorna found a mountain that was impregnable he blew off its head. As has been said, "the Italians advanced by blowing up the Alps." This projectile is made of brass and its surface is painted. It features a painted eagle on top of a mountain, with the insignia of the Field Artillery branch of the United States Army and the letters, "U.S." painted in red, white and blue, underneath. Mountains and trees are painted around the remainder of the projectile. Inscribed on the fuse of the is, "G-A-103-18" and "SCOVILL MODEL 1907 M."
