Background. Cough when it lasts longer than 8 weeks is called chronic cough. Several studies observed how chronic cough negatively impacts patients’ quality of life (QoL), work productivity, non-work activities and health resources. The main purpose of this market research was to collect information on the disease scenario in Italy directly from the patients’ voices. Methods. Inclusion criteria were: 1) cough lasting longer than 8 weeks; 2) current or previous use of drugs for the treatment of cough; 3) failure of cough treatment. The data were collected through an online questionnaire filled in directly by the patient. Patients were selected by Cint, leader in digital insights gathering. Results. Starting from 13.058 subjects, 521 (4%) were the subjects with chronic cough (cough longer than 8 weeks) and 411 patients met the inclusion criteria, suffering from refractory and/or idiopathic chronic cough. 401 out of 411 patients consulted a physician and in 50.4% of them was indicated a pathology linked to chronic caught while 39.2% suffered idiopathic chronic cough because didn’t receive any diagnosis of a pathology related to cough. These 401 subjects suffered from refractory and/or idiopathic chronic cough. The QoL was worse both in terms of physical and mental health than the Italian average mentioned in the Bes ISTAT report. The average cost per patient with chronic cough was € 561.00. Conclusions. Our study confirmed that the substantial impact on daily life is worse in subjects with chronic idiopathic or refractory cough. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
