Abstract

The European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action ESMERALDA aimed at developing guidance and a flexible methodology for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) to support the EU member states in the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy's Target 2 Action 5. ESMERALDA's key tasks included network creation, stakeholder engagement, enhancing ecosystem services mapping and assessment methods across various spatial scales and value domains, work in case studies and support of EU member states in MAES implementation. Thus ESMERALDA aimed at integrating various project outcomes around four major strands: i) Networking, ii) Policy, iii) Research and iv) Application. The objective was to provide guidance for integrated ecosystem service mapping and assessment that can be used for sustainable decision-making in policy, business, society, practice and science at EU, national and regional levels. This article presents the overall ESMERALDA approach of integrating the above-mentioned project components and outcomes and provides an overview of how the enhanced methods were applied and how they can be used to support MAES implementation in the EU member states. Experiences with implementing such a large pan-European Coordination and Support Action in the context of EU policy are discussed and recommendations for future actions are given. Abstract

Decision makers are increasingly interested in information from ecosystem services (ES) assessments. Scientists have for long recognised the importance of selecting appropriate indicators. Yet, while the amount and variety of indicators developed by scientists seems to increase continuously, the extent to which the indicators truly inform decision makers is often unknown and questioned. In this viewpoint paper, we reflect and provide guidance on how to develop appropriate ES indicators for informing decision making, building on scientific literature and practical experience collected from researchers involved in seven case studies. We synthesized 16 criteria for ES indicator selection and organized them according to the widely used categories of credibility, salience, legitimacy (CSL). We propose to consider additional criteria related to feasibility (F), as CSL criteria alone often seem to produce indicators which are unachievable in practice. Considering CSLF together requires a combination of scientific knowledge, communication skills, policy and governance insights and on-field experience. In conclusion, we present a checklist to evaluate CSLF of your ES indicators. This checklist helps to detect and mitigate critical shortcomings in an early phase of the development process, and aids the development of effective indicators to inform actual policy decisions.

Abstract

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan teoreettisista lähtökohdista käsin kuinka yksilön luovuutta voitaisiin paremmin tukea akateemisessa yrittäjyyskasvatuksessa. Tutkimusaiheen valintaan vaikutti se, että luovuus nähdään yrittäjyyskasvatuksen haasteena. Tutkimuksessa haetaan kattavaa ymmärrystä luovuuden ilmiöön lähestymällä sitä yksilön, kasvatuksen ja luovan työn prosessien näkökulmista. Luovuuden ja yrittäjämäisen ajattelun ja toiminnan dialogia tarkastellaan menestyvien yrittäjien ominaisuuksiin verraten. Tämän jälkeen esille tulleita näkökulmia sovelletaan yrittäjyyskasvatuksen tarpeisiin. Lopuksi pohditaan luovuuden mahdollisuuksia osana yrittäjyyskasvatuksen tulevaisuutta. Tutkimus on laaja kirjallisuuskatsaus, jonka teoreettisessa osassa sovelletaan systeemiajattelua ja sen johdannaisia ajattelutapoja ymmärryksen apuvälineinä luovuutta ja yrittäjyyttä koskevien ilmiöiden tarkastelussa. Systeemiajattelu on yksi osa-alue uutta tieteellistä paradigmaa soveltavia tutkimusaloja, jotka painottavat holistisuutta, kompleksisuutta, ympäristön dynaamisuutta sekä ilmiöiden välisiä vuorovaikutussuhteita. Systeemiajattelun näkökulma on valittu tutkielmaan siksi, että sen nähdään lisäävän yritysten luovuutta organisaatio- ja johtamistutkimuksissa. Tutkielman tuloksena on monipuolinen kuvaus luovan yritteliään yksilön ominaisuuksista ja niitä tukevista tekijöistä, sekä monitasoinen luovan yrittäjän ajattelun ja toiminnan kuvaus systeemisestä näkökulmasta käsin. Esille tulleiden tekijöiden pohjalta on koottu luovuutta tukevan yrittäjyyskasvatuksen malli. Tutkielman tulosten perusteella erityisesti autenttisuuden ja autonomian edistäminen sekä systeemiajattelun ymmärtäminen nähdään varteenotettavina luovuutta tukevina tekijöinä akateemisessa yrittäjyyskasvatuksessa.

Abstract

This study evaluated the accuracy of boreal forest above-ground biomass (AGB) and volume estimates obtained using airborne laser scanning (ALS) and RapidEye data in a two-phase sampling method. Linear regression-based estimation was employed using an independent validation dataset and the performance was evaluated by assessing the bias and the root mean square error (RMSE). In the phase I, ALS data from 50 field plots were used to predict AGB and volume for the 200 surrogate plots. In the phase II, the ALS-simulated surrogate plots were used as a ground-truth to estimate AGB and volume from the RapidEye data for the study area. The resulting RapidEye models were validated against a separate set of 28 plots. The RapidEye models showed a promising accuracy with a relative RMSE of 19%-20% for both volume and AGB. The evaluated concept of biomass inventory would be useful to support future forest monitoring and decision making for sustainable use of forest resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action ESMERALDA aimed at developing guidance and a flexible methodology for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) to support the EU member states in the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy’s Target 2 Action 5. ESMERALDA’s key tasks included network creation, stakeholder engagement, enhancing ecosystem services mapping and assessment methods across various spatial scales and value domains, work in case studies and support of EU member states in MAES implementation. Thus ESMERALDA aimed at integrating various project outcomes around four major strands: i) Networking, ii) Policy, iii) Research and iv) Application. The objective was to provide guidance for integrated ecosystem service mapping and assessment that can be used for sustainable decision-making in policy, business, society, practice and science at EU, national and regional levels. This article presents the overall ESMERALDA approach of integrating the above-mentioned project components and outcomes and provides an overview of how the enhanced methods were applied and how they can be used to support MAES implementation in the EU member states. Abstract

Decision makers are increasingly interested in information from ecosystem services (ES) assessments. Scientists have for long recognised the importance of selecting appropriate indicators. Yet, while the amount and variety of indicators developed by scientists seems to increase continuously, the extent to which the indicators truly inform decision makers is often unknown and questioned. In this viewpoint paper, we reflect and provide guidance on how to develop appropriate ES indicators for informing decision making, building on scientific literature and practical experience collected from researchers involved in seven case studies. We synthesized 16 criteria for ES indicator selection and organized them according to the widely used categories of credibility, salience, legitimacy (CSL). We propose to consider additional criteria related to feasibility (F), as CSL criteria alone often seem to produce indicators which are unachievable in practice. Considering CSLF together requires a combination of scientific knowledge, communication skills, policy and governance insights and on-field experience. In conclusion, we present a checklist to evaluate CSLF of your ES indicators. This checklist helps to detect and mitigate critical shortcomings in an early phase of the development process, and aids the development of effective indicators to inform actual policy decisions.
