The ability of some ectomycorrhizal fungi to access organic sources of nitrogen is known to influence decomposition, nitrogen mineralisation and soil carbon storage. The consequences for aboveground ecosystem structure and processes are less well-documented. We used the LAI-2200C Plant Canopy Analyzer to compare leaf area index and understorey light availability of ectomycorrhizal Nothofagus stands and arbuscular mycorrhizal podocarp-broadleaf stands growing on similar soils at a dry forest site in the Wairarapa district of New Zealand's North Island. N. solandri was the sole overstorey tree in the three Nothofagus stands, and the ericaceous shrub Leucopogon fasciculatus was prominent in the understorey. The three podocarp-broadleaf stands were more diverse and more varied, the major contributors to basal area being Elaeocarpus dentatus, Hedycarya arborea, Cyathea dealbata, Carpodetus serratus and Dacrydium cupressinum. Leaf area index of Nothofagus stands averaged one unit lower (4.04) than that of neighbouring podocarp-broadleaf stands (5.11). Average light availability under Nothofagus stands (3.6–4.9%) was twice that beneath podocarp-broadleaf stands (1.6–2.1%). The lower leaf area index, greater light transmittance, and monodominance of Nothofagus stands probably reflects suppression of arbuscular mycorrhizal species by ectomycorrhizal short-circuiting of the nitrogen cycle. Spirotropis longifolia (DC.) Baill. is organized in monodominant forest patches in French Guiana. S. longifolia root nodules and forest soil samples were collected in three monodominant populations of S. longifolia and in four zones, from the S. longifolia core dominance to the adjacent mixed forest where this species was absent. S. longifolia roots presented arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) structures, but no ectomycorrhizae. The presence of myconodule-like structures was only noted once. Isolates of S. longifolia and of diverse French Guianese legume trees were 95% identified as Bradyrhizobium spp. and rarely as Rhizobium spp. On a partial 16S rDNA phylogenetic tree, S. longifolia-associated bradyrhizobia were positioned in a separate cluster including the Bradyrhizobium sp. Tv2a-2 strain isolated from Tachigali versicolor in Panama. Bradyrhizobia of other forest legume trees were positioned identically, or differently, in various clusters. A partial 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) phylogenetic tree confirmed that the main cluster accounting for 82% of the direct or trapped bradyrhizobia associated with S. longifolia was situated outside the B. japonicum and B. elkanii superclades, in the Tv2a-2 superclade/Kakadu supergroup. In this cluster, other bradyrhizobia appeared that were associated with legumes from the tribes Ormosieae, Brongniartieae and Dalbergieae, suggesting the possibility of a shared pool of the most ancestral symbionts that are bradyrhizobia with the Caesalpinoid legumes and the early-branching Papilionoid legumes. Curiously, the seven monodominant Fabaceae of the Amazonian forests were exclusively part of these subfamilies. The link between ancestral symbiosis and monodominance still remains to be studied. Key message: Species interactions should be considered during the design of restoration plans for tropical dry forests. Legume trees dominate old-growth and regenerating tropical dry forests with some pioneers becoming temporarily monodominant during secondary succession. Yet, the mechanisms promoting legume coexistence in this ecosystem are poorly understood but essential to develop restoration strategies for degraded forests. We studied plant–plant interactions in the regeneration niche of an early and a late successional legume tree species, increasingly co-occurring in northwestern Mexico due to persistent climatic and anthropogenic disturbance that is altering forest dynamics. Our experiment comprised two species (Acacia cochliacantha, typical early successional and monodominant, and Lysiloma watsonii, typical late successional) × two habitats (direct light and shade) × three plant interaction treatments (control, intraspecific and interspecific). Each of the 12 experimental units contained 20 pots, totaling 240 replicates. We examined germination, seedling survival, and growth dynamics and determined seedling dry mass (total and root: shoot) at the end of the experiment. Our results suggest that legume monodominance in regenerating tropical dry forests starts early during germination and may be temporarily maintained through the interplay between interspecific facilitation and intraspecific competition. In contrast, late successional species may avoid negative heterospecific interactions by recruiting later (benefiting from neighbors' shade) and maintaining neutral associations with conspecifics since early ontogenetic stages. Therefore, a cautious selection of early and late successional species and their spatial arrangement should be considered during the planning stage of restoration programs for tropical dry forests. During the past 30 years, there has been a growing belief in and promotion of agroecosystem diversity for pest management and future food production as an agroecological or nature-based approach. Monoculture agriculture, which produces most of our food, is considered to be highly vulnerable to pests in contrast to plant species-diverse agroecosystems which may possess a greater abundance of natural enemies, keeping pest populations under control. In this paper, we question the role of crop diversity for pest management and explore the relationship between crop and associated diversity and pests through the following processes: environmental stresses that favor monodominance; evolutionary adaptations that resist insect herbivores (genetic resistance response); mechanisms of spatial escape from insect herbivores (escape response); and the role of crop-associated biodiversity. We present strong evidence that not only questions the high vulnerability of monocultures to pest damage but also supports why monocultures continue to produce most of the world's food. Reference is made to the importance of targeted plant breeding and the role of trans-continental crop introduction supported by efficient quarantine for pest management. We conclude that—with the exception of irrigated rice—much more research is needed to better understand the role of crop diversity in agroecosystems for pest management and food production. Background and aims -- The forests of the Congo Basin contain high levels of biodiversity, and are globally important for carbon storage. In order to design effective conservation strategies, and to accurately model carbon stocks, a fine-scale understanding of the different forest types that make up this forest block is needed. Monodominant Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forest covers large areas of the Congo Basin, but it is currently unclear whether it is sufficiently distinct from adjacent mixed terre firme forest to warrant separate treatment for conservation planning and carbon calculations. This study aimed to compare the structure and diversity of monodominant and mixed forest, and ask whether there is a unique vascular plant community associated with G. dewevrei forest. Material and methods -- We utilised a combination of plot data and herbarium specimens collected in the Sangha Trinational (a network of protect areas in Cameroon, Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo). Plot inventories were used to compare G. dewevrei forest and mixed forest for stem density, basal area, above ground biomass, stem size distribution, species diversity, and species composition. In addition, a database of 3,557 herbarium specimens was used to identify species of vascular plant that are associated with G. dewevrei forest. Key results -- Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forest is distinct in both structure and species composition from mixed forest. Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forest has a lower stem number (of trees ≥ 10 cm), but a greater proportion of larger trees (> 70 cm), suggesting higher carbon stocks. The species composition is distinct from mixed forest, with 56 species of vascular plant significantly associated with G. dewevrei forest. Conclusion -- Monodominant G. dewevrei forest in the Sangha Trinational is both compositionally and structurally distinct from mixed forest. In forest communities, light competition is a key process for community assembly. Species' differences in seedling and sapling tolerance to shade cast by overstory trees is thought to determine species composition at late‐successional stages. Most forests are distant from these late‐successional equilibria, impeding a formal evaluation of their potential species composition. To extrapolate competitive equilibria from short‐term data, we therefore introduce the JAB model, a parsimonious dynamic model with interacting size‐structured populations, which focuses on sapling demography including the tolerance to overstory competition. We apply the JAB model to a two‐"species" system from temperate European forests, that is, the shade‐tolerant species Fagus sylvatica L. and the group of all other competing species. Using Bayesian calibration with prior information from external Slovakian national forest inventory (NFI) data, we fit the JAB model to short time series from the German NFI. We use the posterior estimates of demographic rates to extrapolate that F. sylvatica will be the predominant species in 94% of the competitive equilibria, despite only predominating in 24% of the initial states. We further simulate counterfactual equilibria with parameters switched between species to assess the role of different demographic processes for competitive equilibria. These simulations confirm the hypothesis that the higher shade tolerance of F. sylvatica saplings is key for its long‐term predominance. Higher temperatures, declining precipitation, changing cloud cover and increased wildfires threaten tropical montane pine forests by overriding the environmental heterogeneity that typically buffers these systems from catastrophic fires. Severe fires threaten to overwhelm forest resilience and tip this biome into alternate vegetation states.This study focused on long‐term dynamics of montane Pinus occidentalis forests in the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic after a ~1000 km2 fire in 2005, the largest since 1965. We used long‐term records to investigate climate before and after the fire, and 19‐year dataset of pre‐ and post‐fire vegetation change from a network of 55 permanent plots (20 small 0.05 ha plots and 35 large 0.1 ha plots) established in 1999 to model overstorey and understorey vegetation dynamics.The 2005 fire was synchronized with the most extreme drought in the region in over 60 years. The fire burned from <1600 to >3000 m a.s.l. in elevation across windward and leeward slopes, creating a mosaic of low‐, moderate‐ and high‐severity patches. Lower elevations, leeward slopes and stands with a higher proportion of smaller pine trees all burned at higher severities.Growth rates of trees that survived the fire remained lower than pre‐fire rates 13 years after the fire. The highest post‐fire mortality rates were soon after the fire and in the census immediately following subsequent post‐fire droughts. Post‐fire pine seedling abundance was significantly greater in stands with higher basal area of live canopy trees and significantly reduced by increased shrub abundance in the understorey. Understorey composition recovered rapidly to pre‐fire states in sites affected by low‐ and moderate‐severity fires, but sites affected by high‐severity fires remained dissimilar to pre‐fire composition 13 years after the fire. Even though high‐severity patches had persistently low pine regeneration, 100% of small plots and 96% of large plots had at least one pine sapling or canopy tree recruit by 2018. Shrub taxa survived the fire in higher numbers and recovered to pre‐fire densities much faster than the pine, especially in high‐severity burns.Synthesis. Climate change has increased the likelihood of wildfires in tropical montane pine forests, with long‐lasting effects on vegetation dynamics. However, this biome may prove resilient to increasingly severe fires in the near future, given the ongoing recovery of Pinus occidentalis forests in Hispaniola despite repeated severe droughts. Nevertheless, highly drought‐ and fire‐resistant taxa (e.g. shrubs) may form alternate stable states in drier portions of tropical montane landscapes in the future as droughts and high‐severity fires become more common. Specialised natural enemies can locally suppress seeds and seedlings near conspecific adults more than far from them. Whilst this is thought to facilitate species coexistence, the relative contribution of multiple enemies to whether heterospecific seeds and seedlings rather than conspecifics perform better beneath a particular adult species remains less clear, especially in regions with spatially extensive monodominant stands. We designed a field exclusion experiment to separate the effects of fungi, insects and vertebrates on the seedling establishment and early survival of two temperate tree species, Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies, in the adult tree monocultures of these species. Our experiment demonstrates the key role of vertebrates in mediating the effects of adult trees on seeds and seedlings. Due to vertebrates and partly insects, Fagus sylvatica seedlings survived worse beneath conspecific than heterospecific adults and were also outperformed by Picea abies seedlings beneath their own adults. Picea abies seedling establishment was higher beneath conspecific than heterospecific adults, but Fagus sylvatica seedlings outperformed them beneath their own adults. The impact of enemies on Picea abies establishment beneath conspecific adults was less clear. Fungi did not influence seedling establishment and survival. Our findings highlight the need to compare enemy impacts on each seedling species beneath conspecific and heterospecific adults with their impacts on conspecific and heterospecific seedlings beneath a particular adult species. Such evaluations can shed more light on the role of enemies in tree communities by identifying the plant–enemy interactions that facilitate species coexistence and those that promote species monodominance. In the Pantanal floodplain, some tree species forms wide monodominant stands, which can be influenced by environmental filters like fire and annual flood cycles. Such environmental filters can regulate tree distribution and growth. In this research, we analyzed the influence of flooding on isolation and size of Tabebuia aurea Benth. & Hook.f. ex S. Moore (Bignoniaceae Juss.) individuals and how the influence of isolation on size varies along of the flood gradient. We used the distance between neighboring trees as isolation measurement, tree stem circumference (TSC) as the size of the trees, and the water mark on the trunks as flood level. We showed that T. aurea individuals are more isolated in areas with higher flood, possibly due to differential mortality. Furthermore, we found that in less flooded areas, isolation had positive influence on the size of the trees, probably due to asymmetric competition. Therefore, we conclude that flood cycles influence the isolation of T. aurea trees, but they do not directly affect the size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanism proposed to explain tree monodominance in tropical forests is that the dominant species forms a dense canopy and produces shade-tolerant seedlings, which together favor selfreplacement. Under this hypothesis, seedlings of monodominant species should have limited ability to respond to drastic increases in understory light, like those resulting from logging. Therefore, monodominant species should lose their seedling dominance after logging-induced canopy opening. To test this hypothesis, the current study measured seedling survival and growth of the monodominant species, Prioria copaifera, and its main competitor, Pentaclethra macroloba, in two forest stands that differ in logging history and in an unlogged stand in southeastern Costa Rica. Although, growth rates and survival of previously established seedlings were similar for both species across the three stands, seedling survival and growth decreased as light increased, with the effect being more pronounced for Prioria than for Pentaclethra. The study also investigated the ability of Prioria to respond to changing light environments by transplanting seedlings into logging-induced canopy gaps. Contrary to prediction, Prioria seedlings survived and grew better in gap centers than in gap edges or under a closed canopy. This result contrasts with established seedlings that cannot acclimate to changes in light conditions. Therefore, we conclude that continued Prioria dominance in selectively logged forests depends more on seedling production after canopy disturbance than on the established seedling present before disturbances. Key message: The high mortality and low recruitment of the myrmecophytic Acacia drepanolobium are not consistent with the demographic rates of monodominant species. The positive conspecific density dependence observed from the spatial analysis is consistent with the defensive benefits conferred by symbiotic ants to trees when they grow close to each other. Patches of savanna dominated by Acacia drepanolobium occur throughout East Africa on nutrient-rich vertisols, also known as black cotton soils. We assessed the survival and recruitment for all freestanding trees with diameter at knee height (dkh) ≥ 10 mm in one of such mono-dominated patches (47 ha) at the Mpala Research Centre, Kenya, with the aim of identifying demographic traits that might explain the dominance of this species. Over a mean 6-year interval, mortality and recruitment rates in the habitat were 4.55%/year and 1.42%/year respectively, resulting in a net loss of 17.8% of the initial individuals. Of the 30 species recorded from the first census, 11 decreased in abundance, nine increased, and the remainder 10 did not change in abundance. The monodominant A. drepanolobium had a high mortality (4.69%/year), a low recruitment (1.31%/year), and a 19% population decline. There was no evidence of conspecific negative density dependence for this species. Rather, we found a statistically significant positive correlation between the number of conspecific neighbors and individual-level probability of survival, consistent with the "shared defense" benefits that symbiotic ant colonies occupying multiple trees can confer to these latter in a small neighborhood. Thus, mortality of A. drepanolobium was higher in areas where it occurred in lower densities, which resulted in an increase in the spatial aggregation of conspecifics. Mortality increased with dkh size classes and was mostly caused by elephants and stem-boring beetles. The demographic rates during the study period in theory are inconsistent with those of monodominant species. The protection against herbivory conferred by mutualistic ants associated with this species remains the most probable explanation of its dominance in this habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The OCBIL theory comprises a set of hypotheses to comprehend the biota of old, climatically buffered, infertile landscapes (OCBILs). Here, we review evidence from the literature to evaluate the extent to which this theory could apply to the biodiversity hotspot of New Caledonia. We present geological, pedological and climatic evidence suggesting how the island might qualify as an OCBIL. The predictions of OCBIL theory are then reviewed in the context of New Caledonia. There is evidence for a high rate of micro-endemism, accumulation of relict lineages, a high incidence of dioecy, myrmecochory and nutritional specializations in plants. New Caledonian vegetation also exhibits several types of monodominant formations that reveal the importance of disturbances on the island. Fires and tropical storms are likely to be important factors that contribute to the dynamic of New Caledonian ecosystems. Although naturally infertile, there is archaeological evidence that humans developed specific horticultural practices in the ultramafic landscapes of New Caledonia. Further comparisons between New Caledonia and other areas of the world, such as South Africa and Southwest Australia, are desirable, to develop the OCBIL theory into a more robust and generalized, testable framework and to determine the most efficient strategies to preserve their outstanding biodiversity. Questions: Inundation is an important feature linked to monodominance in tropical wetlands. The occurrence of neighbouring monodominant species indicates that soil can also have an important role. This study aimed to determine if variations in densities of three neighbouring monodominant species, Byrsonima cydoniifolia, Copernicia alba and Tabebuia aurea, are related primarily to variation of flooding patterns and secondarily to soil physicochemical variations in the Pantanal. Location: This study was performed in the southern Pantanal subregion of Miranda. Methods: We sampled 74 plots of 25 m × 25 m distributed among 15 patches of these species (five patches of each species). In each plot, we sampled all individuals of all shrub and tree species, checked the water mark left on tree trunks by the last flooding, and collected soil samples. Data were analyzed using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and regression trees. Results: We found that the main driver splitting these monodominant stands is soil, and that the secondary driver is inundation. The main drivers for Copernicia alba were higher soil pH, higher inundation and soil contents of Mg. For Byrsonima cydoniifolia, the main drivers were low Ca and Mg contents and high content of fine sand. Tabebuia aurea was the only species for which inundation was the main driver. Conclusions: We reject the hypothesis that inundation is the main driver splitting these monodominant stands. Differences in flooding levels were not crucial for two of the three species. Except for Tabebuia aurea, which was more influenced by inundation, soils were found to play an essential role in this spatial separation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fire may divert or arrest natural regeneration in abandoned pastures throughout the tropics, transforming them to low-resilience systems that do not recover even in the absence of disturbances. Understanding regeneration in degraded landscapes is crucial to decision-making and predicting the outcome of passive or active restoration actions. We aimed to understand the effects of intensifying fire regimes on post-fire natural regeneration in sites degraded by logging and fire in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We studied five areas with different fire regimes (i.e., different fire frequencies and post-fire regeneration time), dominated by Moquiniastrum polymorphum (Asteraceae), a widely-distributed species with fire resistance traits. We analyzed differences in structure, diversity, the amplitude of the species' geographic distribution, and floristic composition. We recorded Leaf Area Index and grass cover to understand the effect of canopy closure on fire exclusion and analyzed functional traits related to succession and response to fire (specific leaf area, height, wood density, bark thickness, seed mass). Post-fire regeneration was slow and fire-prone and dominance by M. polymorphum decreased with less disturbance, as other species entered the communities. Structure, diversity, and functional composition recovered along the gradient but did not reach old-growth values. The taxonomic composition was strikingly different in burned areas and forests, irrespective of fire history. Natural regeneration followed a divergent trajectory, marked by the establishment of other widely-distributed species, which suggests a long-term floristic impoverishment. The establishment of M. polymorphum allows these pastures to exit grass-fire cycles. Longer post-fire recovery and fewer fire events allow for canopy closure, grass exclusion, and eventually fire suppression. This two-step dynamic breaks a crucial barrier for restoration from degraded pastures and represents a more desirable state than pastures. However, relying only upon natural regeneration results in impoverished secondary forests. Given the pervasive effects of deforestation and fire, natural regeneration observed in tropical landscapes may correspond to impoverished new secondary forests that fail to attain conservation targets for the biome. Preventing future fires and controlling grass cover in the understory is crucial to avoid their retrogression to pastures and to treat them as regeneration templates for active restoration.

Tropical rain forests worldwide are affected by anthropogenic disturbances, and secondary forests that develop afterwards are often dominated by pioneer tree species, but the consequences of different anthropogenic disturbances on nutrient cycling are poorly understood. Because most nutrient cycling in tropical rain forests occurs through litterfall and in the soil organic layer, we measured litterfall of a widespread and dominant pioneer tree, okoume (Aucoumea klaineana, Burseraceae) in Gabon, in one forest previously disturbed by logging and in another by agriculture. Litterfall of okoume trees, measured over 14 months, was 18.2 Mg ha−1 year−1 in the formerly logged forest, which was 72.6% greater than in the forest more recently disturbed by agriculture (10.6 Mg ha−1 year−1). Litter decomposition rates were more rapid in the formerly logged forest, and this may explain why litter thickness was 32% lower in the formerly logged forest, despite the greater litterfall within it. Our results highlight that two widespread anthropogenic disturbances in Gabonese rain forests have significantly different consequences on litterfall of a dominant tree and therefore are likely to have different effects on nutrient cycling and forest ecosystem function. Aim: Global studies show strong climatic control of leaf area index (LAI) and related ecosystem properties. However, alternative states stabilized by positive feedbacks have the potential to produce appreciable differences in LAI in a given environment. On certain sites in New Zealand, ectomycorrhizal (EM) southern beech forest (Nothofagaceae) appear to form a stable alternative to more species‐rich conifer‐broadleaved forest dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees. We asked which climate variables best predict LAI of New Zealand's remaining old‐growth forests, and if stands dominated by Nothofagaceae have lower LAI and better‐lit understories than conifer‐broadleaved forests, when climate and other site factors are held constant. Location: New Zealand. Taxon: Seventy‐two tree species belonging to 37 angiosperm, conifer and pteridophyte families, the most frequent occurrences being Cunoniaceae, Cyatheaceae, Dicksoniaceae, Lauraceae, Nothofagaceae, Podocarpaceae and Violaceae. Methods: We quantified overstorey composition of 45 old‐growth stands, and used the LAI‐2200C Plant Canopy Analyzer to measure LAI and understorey light. We used generalized linear mixed models to determine how these variables were influenced by environment and by dominance of Nothofagaceae. Results: LAI ranged from 3.5 to 6.9, and increased linearly with mean annual temperature (MAT); percentage light transmission to the understorey spanned an order of magnitude and decreased exponentially with increasing MAT. However, at a given MAT, LAI of stands dominated by Nothofagaceae averaged 0.8–0.9 units lower than conifer‐broadleaf stands, resulting in twofold higher understorey light levels in the former. Soil water deficits also significantly depressed LAI, and increased understorey light; atmospheric water deficits had the opposite effect. Main conclusions: Temperature is the best climatic predictor of LAI and understorey light in New Zealand's remaining old‐growth forests. However, the lower LAI and canopy light interception in southern beech stands presumably reflects the light‐demanding nature of Nothofagaceae, and their apparent ability to inhibit invasion by more shade‐tolerant AM trees with heavier crowns. This inhibitory effect may reflect reduced N supply to AM plants because of suppression of N mineralization by EM fungi, as observed in some EM systems elsewhere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The conspecific negative density dependence hypothesis states that mortality of young trees (seedlings and saplings) is higher near conspecific adults due to mechanisms such as allelopathy, intraspecific competition, and pest facilitation, explaining why in the tropics, most of plant species tend to be rare and live dispersed. However, there are some tree species that defy this expectation and grow in large clusters of conspecific juveniles and adults. We hypothesize that conspecifics living in clusters show higher and/or more variable defensive profiles than conspecifics with dispersed distributions.We evaluated our hypothesis by assessing the expression of physical leaf traits (thickness, and the resistance to punch, tear and shear) and leaf chemical defenses for six clustered and six non‐clustered tree species in Yasuní National Park, Ecuadorian Amazon. We ask ourselves whether (a) clustered species have leaves with higher physical resistance to damage and more chemical defenses variability than non‐clustered species; (b) saplings of clustered species may show higher physical resistance to damage and higher variation on chemical leaf defenses than their conspecific adults, and (c) saplings of non‐clustered species show lower resistance to physical damage and lower variation in chemical defenses compared to conspecific adults.Overall, our study did not support any of our hypotheses. Remarkably, we found that soluble metabolites were significantly species‐specific.Our study suggests that plants physical but not chemical leaf antiherbivore defenses may be a crucial strategy for explaining survivorship of clustered species. Trees in Yasuní may also fall along a suite of tolerance/escape/defense strategies based on limitations of each species physiological constraints for survival and establishment. We conclude that other mechanisms, such as those related to indirect defenses, soil nutrient exploitation efficiency, volatile organic compounds, delayed leaf‐greening, and seed dispersal mechanisms, shall be evaluated to understand conspecific coexistence in this forest. Although most tropical forests are dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees, ECM associations are widespread and found in all tropical regions. Here, we highlight emerging patterns of ECM biogeography, diversity and ecosystem functions, identify knowledge gaps, and offer direction for future research. At the continental and regional scales, tropical ECM systems are highly diverse and vary widely in ECM plant and fungal abundance, diversity, composition and phylogenetic affinities. We found strong regional differences among the dominant host plant families, suggesting that biogeographical factors strongly influence tropical ECM symbioses. Both ECM plants and fungi also exhibit strong turnover along altitudinal and soil fertility gradients, suggesting niche differentiation among taxa. Ectomycorrhizal fungi are often more abundant and diverse in sites with nutrient‐poor soils, suggesting that ECM associations can optimize plant nutrition and may contribute to the maintenance of tropical monodominant forests. The upper canopy of some rain forests in New Caledonia is dominated by single species. These monodominants are commonly secondary species, their dominance not persisting without disturbance. We tested whether dominance is associated with efficient uptake and use of nutrients (N, P and K), comparing between seedlings of monodominants (Nothofagus spp., Arillastrum gummiferum and Cerberiopsis candelabra) and 14 subordinates, grown in a nursery house. We also tested whether this trend applies more broadly to shade-intolerant trees that regenerate episodically (ER species) versus shade-tolerant trees that regenerate continuously (CR species). In the sun treatment, monodominants had higher photosynthetic nutrient-use efficiency and productivity for N and K, and uptake efficiency for N, P and K, than subordinates; ER species had higher photosynthetic nutrient-use efficiency for N, P and K, and uptake efficiency for N and P, than CR species. Uptake efficiency and productivity per nutrient mass were uncorrelated across species, yet Nothofagus spp., A. gummiferum and C. candelabra combined high levels of both traits for N, and Nothofagus spp. and A. gummiferum combined moderate to high levels for P, in sun-grown seedlings. Anovel explanation of the origin of cereal agriculture is proposed, based on the ecology and adaptive morphology of wild cereals ancestral to our founder cereals (einkorn, emmer and barley). Wild cereals are unusually largeseeded. A natural evolutionary-ecological syndrome relates large seed, awns and monodominance (LAM). Awns bury attached seeds in the soil, protecting seed from fire; buried seed needs to be large to emerge on germination; large seeds, growing without competition from small-seeded plants, will produce monodominant vegetation. Climatic and edaphic instability at the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary would have provided an impetus for the spread of annual ruderal grasses. LAMgrassland provided an obvious natural model for the origins of cereal agriculture. Subsequent field management would mimic the natural niche (MNN). The fact that monodominance is a long-standing character of the natural LAM syndrome validates cereal monocultures (now producing most of our food). Various explanations have been put forward for monodominance in otherwise diverse tropical forests. This study assesses if the monodominance of Peltogyne gracilipes on Maraca Island in the northern Amazon can be related to edaphic factors. The basal area of P. gracilipes and the five other most common tree species on Maraca Island ( Astrocaryum aculeatum , Attalea maripa , Ecclinusa guianensis, Licania kunthiana and Pradosia surinamensis ) were recorded in 30 regularly-spaced 0.5 ha plots distributed over an area of 25 km 2 , for which data on topography and concentration of mineral elements in the soil were also obtained. Stems of P. gracilipes accounted for ≥50% of the basal area in five of the plots, which we consider indicative of monodominance, whilst the highest relative basal area that any of the other species achieved in any plot was 31%. The soils data explained more of the variation in the basal area of P. gracilipes than it did for the other five species. The presence vs. absence and basal area of P. gracilipes was positively related to concentrations of magnesium (Mg), aluminium (Al), iron (Fe), phosphorus (P) and silt in the soil and to Mg:Ca ratios. These soils were found in the plots at the lowest elevations, which suggests that drainage factors may also be important. Aims: Gilbertiodendron dewevrei (De Wild.) J.Léonard monodominant forests (MOF) and Scorodophloeus zenkeri Harms mixed forests (MIF) frequently co-occur on similar soil conditions in the Central Congo basin. Although tree species composition is known to impact C storage, the patterns of C sequestration between those contrasted forest types as well as the associated drivers remain unknown. Methods: Annual litterfall, as well as soil (forest floor and mineral soil down to 220 cm depth) organic C (SOC) and aboveground C (AGC) stocks were investigated in MIF and MOF located on highly weathered sandy soils in the Yoko Reserve (DRC). Results: The annual leaf litterfall was similar under both forests but litterfall quality in MOF strongly differed by a set of traits related to organic matter recalcitrance. The SOC stock down to 220 cm was 55% higher under MOF compared to MIF, and the differences between forests remained significant down to 100 cm. While the combined SOC and AGC stocks were similar in both forests, the SOC stocks accounted for ca. 19 and 33% of the total C stocks in MIF and MOF, respectively. Conclusions: Because of similar litterfall C inputs, we conclude that the greater SOC accumulation under G. dewevrei results from a limitation of the decomposition rate, in agreement with the traits of the corresponding leaf litter. Some species-rich secondary forests in New Caledonia have a monodominant canopy. Here we investigate growth and biomass allocation traits that might explain single-species’ dominance of these post-disturbance stands, and their later decline in the absence of large-scale disturbance. Seedlings of 20 rain-forest trees were grown in two light treatments in a nursery house. In the sun treatment, monodominants grew faster (56.7 ± 1.4 mg g−1 wk−1) than subordinates (40.2 ± 2.6 mg g−1 wk−1). However, some episodically regenerating (ER) subordinates had high growth rates similar to those of monodominants. In the shade treatment, monodominants and subordinates had similar growth rates (33.7 ± 2.6 and 34.0 ± 1.9 mg g−1 wk−1 respectively). Notably, monodominants in both sun and shade treatments had lower root mass fraction (0.29 ± 0.02 and 0.27 ± 0.02 g g−1 respectively) than subordinates (0.39 ± 0.02 and 0.37 ± 0.02 g g−1). Fast growth in sunny conditions is probably imperative for these relatively shade-intolerant ER monodominants. In field conditions, high shoot mass fraction combined with efficient root performance may facilitate faster growth in monodominants competing with other ER species in sunlit sites. Ants act in different trophic levels and are important due to their abundance, distribution and diversity in a variety of habitats, exercising influence on many different organisms and ecosystems. Thus, this study compared temporal variation on the structure and composition of the Formicidae community in canopies of Callisthene fasciculata (Spr.) Mart. (Vochysiaceae) during high water and dry periods, in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Ant sampling was performed on 12 specimens of C. fasciculata, in 2010 and 2011, using canopy fogging with insecticide, in a total of 120m² of sampled canopy. Altogether, 2,958 ants were collected. The 2,943 adults were distributed in four subfamilies, 12 genus and 26 species. Myrmicinae (18.7 ind./m2) was the most representative taxon, followed by Formicinae (3.2 ind./m2), Dolichoderinae (2.2 ind./m2) and Pseudomyrmecinae (0.3 ind./m2). The community is made up of six trophic groups, in which omnivorous (23.5 ind./m2) were the most prevalent, followed by minimum hypogeical generalists (0.5 ind./m2) and arboreal generalist predators (0.3 ind./m2). Although the results showed that Formicidae community richness, associated to C. fasciculata canopies, does not represent a significant difference among the seasonal periods, there are differences as to species distribution and grouping in trophic guilds on the host plant over the seasonal periods, indicating the influence of temporal variation, and therefore, habitat conditions on this community.

Cambarazais são formações florestais monodominantes de Vochysia divergens Pohl. O rápido espalhamento de cambarazais em campos sazonalmente inundados no Pantanal tem sido considerado um efeito de mudanças climáticas ocorridas em ciclos plurianuais. Realizado na RPPN SESC Pantanal, Barão de Melgaço, Mato Grosso (Brasil), o presente estudo, inserido no Programa de Pesquisas Ecológicas de Longa Duração (PELD), teve por objetivo analisar a estrutura do cambarazal presente na Reserva, ao longo de um gradiente hidro-topográfico. Os dados fitossociológicos foram coletados em quatro áreas de 1 ha (100×100 m). Todos os indivíduos com CAP (Circunferência à Altura do Peito) > 5 cm foram identificados, medidos seus perímetros e estimadas suas alturas. Um total de 3.149 indivíduos foi amostrado nos quatro hectares e 83 espécies foram identificadas. A diversidade de espécies ao longo do gradiente mostrou relação inversa com a altura da lâmina de água da inundação. A parcela com menor nível de inundação (P1) obteve o maior índice de diversidade de espécies dentre as parcelas (H' = 2,9) e baixa densidade e dominância de V. divergens. As demais parcelas foram identificadas como formações monodominantes de V. divergens, devido à sua dominância de mais de 50% dentro de cada parcela.Monodominant forest formations of Vochysia divergens Pohl found in the Pantanal are called "Cambarazais". The climatic changes registered in pluri-annual cycles have been cited as responsible for the sudden spread of these formations into seasonally flooded open areas. This study was carried out at the SESC Pantanal RPPN (Private Natural Heritage Reserve), Barão de Melgaço, Mato Grosso (Brazil), as part of the Long Term Ecological Research Program (PELD). It aims to analyze structural and phytosociological data collected in four areas of one hectare each of "cambarazal" along a hydro-topographical gradient. All individuals with cbh (circumference at breast height) > 5cm were identified, perimeters were measured and heights were estimated. In the entire sample area, 3,149 individuals belonging to 83 species were registered. Species diversity along the gradient showed an inverse relationship with floodwater levels. The plot with the lowest level of flooding (P1) had the highest species diversity index (H' = 2.91) of the sampled plots and the lowest values of V. divergens density and dominance. The other plots were considered to be V. divergens monodominant formations, since relative dominance of this species in these areas was greater than 50%.

Growing pressures on mangroves throughout the world, highlight the need for studies of vegetation across spatio-temporal scales even in relict patches for ecosystem conservation. Mangroves experience human pressure due to coastal development and are also subjected to environmental stress such as cyclones, tsunami, floods, and sea-level rise, often taking decades to recover from these stresses. We estimated changes in mangrove vegetation in the Ariankuppam estuary on the southeastern coast of peninsular India after two phenomenal perturbations, the 2004 tsunami and 2011 cyclone Thane. We compared land cover maps of mangroves from 2005, 2010, and 2011 with 2004 mangrove vegetation maps to detect change in areal extent of mangrove zones. We inventoried all stems ≥ 10 cm gbh in 34 quadrats (5 m 5 m) prior to the 2011 cyclone, immediately following the cyclone, and eighteen months later to document damages and recovery. The site harbours 2988 trees ha-1 for stems ≥ 10 cm gbh. We found four distinct mangrove zones in 2005 (15.54 ha), and five distinct mangrove zones in 2010 (41.73 ha) and 2011 (40.65 ha). The tsunami and subsequent activities such as dragging the boats swept ashore and dredging resulted in 48% loss of mangroves. The increase in mangrove area observed during 2010 and 2011 was due to the recovery potential of Avicennia and restoration programs. Cyclonic impact and recovery status inventories revealed that among the different zones, the monodominant Avicennia zone experienced severe damage and the mixed Avicennia zone showed slow recovery. Several monodominant rain-forest trees in New Caledonia have population size structures suggesting establishment following large-scale disturbance, with eventual replacement by shade-tolerant species predicted in the absence of future disturbance. Links of dominance and population dynamics to leaf-level photosynthesis were investigated in seedlings of 20 tree species from these forests, grown in experimental sun and shade conditions. In particular, we tested whether episodically regenerating (ER) species, including monodominants, have higher assimilation rates at high irradiances and lower tolerance of shade than continuously regenerating species (CR). ER species had higher maximum net assimilation rates (Amax-area) in sun plants (9.6 ± 0.4 μmol m−2 s−1) than CR species (6.2 ± 0.3 μmol m−2 s−1) and high plasticity, typical of shade-intolerant species, but monodominant species did not differ from other ER species. CR species had leaf-level traits consistent with shade tolerance, including lower dark respiration rates (Rd-area = 0.47 ± 0.03μmol m−2 s−1; Rd-mass = 7 ± 1 nmol g−1 s−1) than ER species (Rd-area = 0.63 ± 0.06 μmol m−2 s−1; Rd-mass = 11 ± 2 nmol g−1 s−1) in shade plants. In many parts of the world, replacement of natural grasslands by woody plants has resulted in a decrease of pasture areas and in habitat loss for a variety of animal species, including amphibians. Wetlands are especially susceptible to invasive plants, both native and exotic, but the effects of such invasions on animal assemblages remain poorly understood. Here, we present information on the impact of selected environmental variables, especially coverage by the native shrub C ombretum laxum Jacq., on the structure of an anuran assemblage in the Pantanal, a huge flood-pulsed South American wetland. Anurans were surveyed during the rainy season in 17 plots, which differed in extent of C . laxum coverage, leaf litter volume, soil moisture and distance to permanently wet areas. Effects of these environmental variables on the species number, relative abundance and composition of the anuran assemblage were evaluated using multivariate statistical analyses. We captured 1203 anurans, of 21 species from four families. Both the number of species and the relative abundance of anurans were lower in plots with greater C . laxum coverage, which also influenced anuran species composition. Number of species was highest in plots located closest to permanently wet areas, which provide protection from desiccation and other resources during the Pantanal dry season, and so could be considered source areas of anurans. While many anuran species were negatively affected by the homogenization of the landscape caused by shrub encroachment, some seemed to be favoured in such circumstances. For these, dense shrub encroachment into natural grasslands may provide safer migratory routes to permanently wet habitats. Thus, at the mesoscale, a mosaic of areas with different levels of coverage by C . laxum (shrub islands) may aid anuran assemblages in the Pantanal wetlands, facilitating the maintenance of higher beta and gamma diversity. The iconic Lodoicea maldivica palm appears to invest heavily in reproduction, with females bearing the world's largest seeds and males producing copious pollen. We asked how these palms, which grow in extremely poor soils, obtain sufficient nutrients to support such high levels of reproductive function., Our study site was the Vallée de Mai UNESCO Site on Praslin, Seychelles. We measured the trees' allocations of dry matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to aboveground growth and reproduction, quantified stemflow and throughfall, and measured availabilities of N and P in the soil., We show that the nutrient costs of reproduction are very high in male and female plants, and for P far exceed those of vegetative growth. We describe how the palm leaves form a huge funnel that intercepts particulate material, especially pollen, which is flushed to the base of the trunk when it rains. In this way, Lodoicea improves its nutrient supply and that of its dispersal-limited offspring., Lodoicea shares many functional characteristics with dominant trees of other monodominant forests in the humid tropics. It also exhibits unique features, including its huge seed, effective funnelling mechanism and diverse community of closely associated animals, suggesting a long evolutionary history under relatively stable conditions. Despite large differences, these ecosystems share an important characteristic: their soils are strongly weathered and phosphorus (P) is a key growth‐limiting nutrient. Soil‐borne pathogens are increasingly being recognized as drivers of plant diversity in lowland tropical rainforests, but have received little attention in species‐rich shrublands. We suggest a trade‐off in which the species most proficient at acquiring P have ephemeral roots that are particularly susceptible to soil‐borne pathogens. This could equalize out the differences in competitive ability among co‐occurring species in these ecosystems, thus contributing to coexistence. Moreover, effective protection against soil‐borne pathogens by ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi might explain the occurrence of monodominant stands of ECM trees and shrubs amongst otherwise species‐rich communities. We identify gaps in our knowledge which need to be filled in order to evaluate a possible link between P limitation, fine root traits, soil‐borne pathogens and local plant species diversity. Such a link may help to explain how numerous plant species can coexist in hyperdiverse rainforests and shrublands, and, conversely, how monodominant stands can develop in these ecosystems. Monodominance in the tropics is often seen as an unusual phenomenon due to the normally high diversity in tropical rain forests. Here we studied Parashorea chinensis H. Wang (Dipterocarpaceae) in a seasonal tropical forest in south-west China, to elucidate the mechanisms behind its monodominance. Twenty-eight 20 × 20-m plots were established in monodominant and mixed forest in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province. All individuals ≥1 cm stem diameter and 16 soil variables were measured. Parashorea chinensis forest had a significantly higher mean tree dbh compared with mixed forest. Diversity did not differ significantly between the two forest types. However, within monodominant patches, all diversity indices decreased with an increase in P. chinensis dominance. Floristic composition of P. chinensis forest did differ significantly from the mixed forest. These differences were associated with more fertile soils (significantly higher pH, Mn, K and lower carbon pools and C:N ratio) in the P. chinensis forest than the mixed forest. In contrast to current paradigms, this monodominant species is not associated with infertile, but with fertile soils. Parashorea chinensis seems to be especially associated with high manganese concentrations which it can tolerate, and with edaphic conditions (water, K) that allow this tall and exposed emergent species to maintain its water balance. This is in contrast with most previous studies on monodominance in the tropics that found either no effect of soil properties, or predict associations with nutrient-poor soils.
