As the popularity of marine aquaria grows, the potential exists for increased harvest of marine ornamental fishes and invertebrates from the oceans around the world. Aquaculture may be an alternative source to wild capture fisheries if commercial production protocols can be developed for species of interest, however numerous impediments must be overcome. Experiments were conducted on the reef butterflyfish (Chaetodon sedentarius), Pacific blue tang (Paracanthurus hepatus), African moony (Monodactylus sebae) and golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) to evaluate and define prey preferences at first feeding among the rotifer, Brachionus plicatiilis, the copepod, Parvocalanus crassirostris, and the ciliate Euplotes sp., by marking each prey with a different colored fluorescent microsphere. Prey preferences observed at the larval first feeding stage were species specific. Pacific blue tang larvae preferred rotifers above ciliates, and ciliates above copepod nauplii. African moony larvae preferred ciliates and nauplii equally over rotifers. Reef butterflyfish larvae preferred ciliates over rotifers and rotifers over nauplii. Golden trevally larvae preferred nauplii over ciliates, and ciliates over rotifers. Take together these data provide critical information which may aid in development of feeding protocols for marine ornamental species.

This study was conducted to evaluate nutritional composition and heavy metals concentration of smoked and raw edible fish species from Ologe lagoon (freshwater) and Lagos lagoon (marine). The fish species from Ologe include: Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Catfish), Monodactylus sebae (African moony), Pomadasys jubelini (Buro), Sphyraena barracuda (Great barracuda), and Pseudotolithus elongatus (Croaker), while that of Lagos lagoon include Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Catfish), Caranx hippos (Crevalle jack), Liza falcipinnis (Sicklefin mullet), Pomadasys jubelini (Buro), and Monodactylus sebae (African moony). The nutritional composition ranged in the following trend moisture (43.24 - 76.79 %) > carbohydrate (3.16 – 63.45 %) > protein (0.80 - 31.55 %) > fibre (1.07 – 2.8 %) > ash (0.81 – 1.88 %) > fat (0.40 – 1.30 %). In this study, these fishes are generally low in fats (lean fish), and fish smoking tend to reduces their nutritional composition. Heavy metals concentration trend thus Zn (2.4 – 7.75 mg/kg) > Ni (0.80 – 1.925 mg/kg) > Cr (0.20 – 0.550 mg/kg) > Pb (0.025 – 0.50 mg/kg). In all the samples, all the metals of interest were detected except cadmium which was not found in any of the samples analysed. Pb (0.025 - 0.5 mg/kg) values in the fishes were lower than the maximum standard level reported to be 0.5 mg/kg dry weight by FAO except in the raw Pomadasys jubelini where the value is 0.5mg/kg. The fresh water fishes showed higher concentration of heavy metals than marine water fishes but not statistically significant (p>0.05). The Guinean Fingerfish Monodactylus sebae is a popular euryhaline ornamental fish species with limited aquaculture production. One of the bottlenecks to commercial production is lack of knowledge of the nutritional requirements for broodstock. Therefore, three broodfish diets were formulated and fed to Guinean Fingerfish broodstock to determine their quantitative and qualitative effects on egg production and egg and larval morphology. The dietary treatments consisted of a control, a diet with increased docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and a diet with increased DHA and arachidonic acid (DHA + ARA). Broodfish fed the DHA + ARA diet spawned more frequently than broodfish fed the DHA diet and those fed the control diet. We examined the diet of juvenile fish of four species – Eucinostomus melanopterus (Gerreidae), Ethmalosa fimbriata (Clupeidae), Monodactylus sebae (Monodactylidae), and Sarotherodon melanotheron (Cichlidae) – between their appearance on the nursery ground and the end of the recruitment season, when they began to shift to deeper parts of the estuary. Fish were collected from the Sine-Saloum, an inverse estuary in Senegal, West Africa. Sampling was conducted at six sites located along the salinity gradient. The study was conducted in the context of an inverse estuary where increasing salinity leads to the disappearance of mangroves. Stomach contents were sorted and the preferred prey determined to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Ontogenic changes in diet were characterized and results expressed as the frequency of occurrence of the prey. The results showed that almost all juveniles began with a “classical” zooplanktonic diet. Following that first stage, they then preyed on items belonging to the periphytic community in the vicinity of mangroves (when present). Juvenile Ethmalosa fimbriata , a phytoplankton feeder as an adult, displayed that kind of transitory diet, a finding not previously recorded. Plant material (algae and leaves) occurred frequently in the stomach contents. All four species began the ontogenic shift toward their adult diet at a length of 50 mm. The periphytic community supported on mangrove prop roots contributes to the diet of juvenile fish living in proximity to mangroves; this may not be verified for those fish living in open waters.
