Abstract Carbonate mud is crucial in the global carbon cycle and serves as a key sedimentary archive for paleoclimate reconstruction. Understanding the mechanisms behind its formation is crucial for explaining long-term carbon storage, including atmospheric carbon dioxide transfer to the hydrosphere and variations in mud production over geological timescales. Various mechanisms explain carbonate mud formation in both lake and marine sediments. Using bio-physicochemical methods on deep sediments of Lake Ilay, Jura, France, we propose a model of micrite formation. Our study shows that micrite mineralization occurs in sediments due to the degradation of ooze rich in exopolymeric substances throughout the sediment core’s depth. This mineralization continues as long as exopolymeric substances are present, persisting for at least 2000 years. Cryo-Scanning electron microscope imaging reveals calcite nucleation at degraded exopolymeric substance nodes, advancing with substance degradation and calcium release. These findings provide insights into fossil carbonate mud origins and formation processes.

Background: Washing with water is not inferior to washing with soaps and detergents in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) in remission during the fall-winter seasons. We investigated whether this finding varies during summer based on the type of cleanser (soaps and detergents). Methods: This evaluator-blinded, pragmatic, randomized, and non-inferiority study enrolled patients with AD whose eczema was controlled following regular steroid ointment application 2 days/week. For 8 ± 4 weeks, participants washed their upper and lower limbs with a cleanser on one side and with water alone on the other. Each participant chose either a weakly alkaline soap or an acidic detergent. The primary outcome was the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score at week 8 ± 4. Results: The data of 43 of the 47 registered participants were analyzed. The median patient age was 44 (23–99) months; 28 and 15 participants chose weakly alkaline and acidic cleansers, respectively. At week 8 ± 4, EASI scores of the water and cleanser sides were 0.00 (0.00–0.40) and 0.15 (0.00–0.40), respectively (p = 0.74). The difference between both sides was 0.00 (−0.07 to 0.14); the limits of the 95 % confidence interval did not reach the pre-specified non-inferiority margin. No difference was observed in the median Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure score, number of additional steroid ointment applications, and occurrences of skin infections. There were no differences between the cleanser types in any of the results. Conclusions: We demonstrated that washing with water was not inferior to that with a cleanser in patients with AD in the maintenance phase during summer, regardless of the type of cleanser.

This paper discusses how pedagogical theory can be used in conceptualizing a collaborative teaching development program in higher education. A theoretically driven teaching development program can be of benefit to both the reviewer and the reviewee by providing (a) a foundation for the reviewee to examine their educational content being reviewed; and (b) a systematic framework for the reviewee for evaluating the content under review. Appropriately used pedagogical theory enables the constructive alignment of teaching, learning, and assessment. This collaborative, self-reflective, and bi-directional teaching development process facilitates a sense of self-determination, which facilitates motivation and achievement of goals. Abstract Although daily higher urinary sodium (Na) and potassium (K) excretion ratio is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease in the general population, a low Na/K ratio is associated with renal dysfunction in critically ill patients. Thus, we retrospectively analyzed the impact of daily urinary Na and K excretion and their ratio on non-relapse mortality (NRM) and overall mortality in 172 adult single-unit cord blood transplantation (CBT) patients treated at our institution between 2007 and 2020. Multivariate analysis showed that a low urinary Na/K ratio at both 14 days (hazard ratio [HR], 4.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.81–12.83; P = 0.001) and 28 days (HR, 4.47; 95% CI 1.32–15.12; P = 0.015) was significantly associated with higher NRM. Furthermore, a low urinary Na/K ratio at 28 days was significantly associated with higher overall mortality (HR, 2.38; 95% CI 1.15–4.91; P = 0.018). Patients with a low urinary Na/K ratio had decreased urine volume, more weight gain, experienced more grade III–IV acute graft-versus-host disease, and required corticosteroids by 28 days after CBT. These findings indicate that a low urinary Na/K ratio early after single-unit CBT is associated with poor NRM and survival in adults.

Abstract This manuscript aims to present and evaluate the applicability of combining optical line-of-sight (LoS) navigation with crosslink radiometric navigation for deep-space cruising distributed space systems. To do so, a set of four distributed space systems architectures is presented, and for each of those, the applicability of the combination is evaluated, comparing it to the baseline solutions, which are based on only optical navigation. The comparison is done by studying the performance in a circular heliocentric orbit in seven different time intervals (ranging from 2024 to 2032) and exploiting the observation of all the pairs of planets from Mercury to Saturn. The distance between spacecraft is kept around 200 km. Later, a NEA mission test case is generated in order to explore the applicability to a more realistic case. This analysis shows that the technique can also cope with a variable inter-satellite distance, and the best performance is obtained when the spacecraft get closer to each other.

The aim of the present study was to identify profiles of elite athlete mental well- and ill-being and study how the profiles (i.e., subgroups of athletes) differed in sport-related demands and resources. A total of 259 Finnish elite athletes (n = 170 active and n = 89 retired) completed quantitative self-report inventories. Through cluster analysis, four profiles of mental well- and ill-being were identified. Profile 1 was overrepresented by retired, older, and male athletes, and characterized by good mental well-being. Profile 2 consisted mainly of active athletes who reported mild risk for alcohol abuse. Profile 3 consisted mainly of women who displayed possible presence of an eating disorder. Profile 4 was typical of young athletes with mental ill-being. The balance between sport-related demands and resources appeared to be the healthiest in Profile 1 and worst in Profile 4. We use seismic waveform data from the AlpArray Seismic Network and three other temporary seismic networks, to perform receiver function (RF) calculations and time-to-depth migration to update the knowledge of the Moho discontinuity beneath the broader European Alps. In particular, we set up a homogeneous processing scheme to compute RFs using the time-domain iterative deconvolution method and apply consistent quality control to yield 112 205 high-quality RFs. We then perform time-to-depth migration in a newly implemented 3D spherical coordinate system using a European-scale reference P and S wave velocity model. This approach, together with the dense data coverage, provide us with a 3D migrated volume, from which we present migrated profiles that reflect the first-order crustal thickness structure. We create a detailed Moho map by manually picking the discontinuity in a set of orthogonal profiles covering the entire area. We make the RF dataset, the software for the entire processing workflow, as well as the Moho map, openly available; these open-access datasets and results will allow other researchers to build on the current study.

Vanadium has long been used as a corrosion-resistant coating, including as a metal alloy for battery cathodes. However, batteries discovered with non-smooth cathode surfaces due to the fabrication process have a short battery life. So, a cathode coating stage is required via the electroplating method under the influence of a magnetic field or Magneto Electro Deposition (MED). Knowing the limiting current in MED is very important because the optimum mass transport achieves at the limiting current (iB). The smoothest and most compact electrodeposit surface will occur at this limiting current. In this study, Feed Forward Neural Network and Neural-Wiener are suggested and compared as a nonlinear modeling approach to determine the ideal limiting current because of their strong capacity to anticipate the link between input and output from experiment data. The Levenberg-Marquadt optimization technique with hidden neurons was used to evaluate and compare the modeling capabilities of two neural networks, the Feed Forward Neural Network, and the Neural Wiener. The results of this study are presented as a comparison of the Mean Square Error (MSE) values obtained from the nonlinear modeling of two artificial neural network algorithms. The algorithm that models the ideal current limiting has the lowest MSE value (iB).

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) waste contains 50-60% Zn. EAF waste synthesis has the potential to produce ZnO, which can be used in a variety of applications. The hydrothermal method is used in the synthesis, with time variations of 3 and 6 hours and temperature variations of 120 °C, 150 °C and 200 °C using precipitating reagents in the form of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and oxalic acid (C2H2O4). UV-Vis spectrophotometer characterization result shows the absorbance value at 365 nm, which is the absorbance characteristic of ZnO material. The result of increasing the Zn element was revealed by XRF characterization. The XRD characterization revealed zinc oxalate dehydrates. This result depicts the hydrothermal with the oxalic acid solvent used to produce zinc oxalate dehydration at various temperatures and time variations.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the current state of sustainability education and research capacity at engineering faculties. More specifically, this research is intended to provide new and much-needed information about sustainability knowledge, teaching and research activities. Design/methodology/approach: The first method used is a questionnaire survey completed by teachers and researchers about their activities dealing with sustainability and the second is based on a systematic literature review at the SCOPUS database for scientific publications on sustainability by Palestinian universities in the Palestinian context, and the number of publications in fields related to sustainability in Scopus indexed journals. Findings: Some institutions include more sustainability topics in their teaching courses and research activities than others. The number of courses per teaching staff and department and the sustainability contents vary among the selected universities. Teaching activities focus on environmental sustainability, especially on energy, thermal and water efficiency. The number of Scopus indexed publications in fields related to sustainability in the past 20 years is low. The highest number of published papers was those focused on environmental sustainability. Practical implications: This study has implications for university researchers and educators by identifying the gaps between the teaching and research conducted and the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. For policymakers, the study shows that the status of sustainability in higher education, mainly at engineering schools, is still in great need for universities' and government's support, for example, to increase the number of published papers, number of courses and master programmes addressing sustainability. Originality/value: This paper provides a current status for integrating sustainability education and research at engineering schools. The output of this study can be useful for future research to analyse higher education institutions' impacts on sustainable development.

The sustainable urban design of residential neighborhoods plays an important role in the efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals and alleviate the effects of climate change. This paper aims to develop a model for the sustainable urban design of residential neighborhoods, taking into account the local condition in Palestinian territories. This model is built on various international neighborhood sustainability assessment (NSA) tools, based on the review of existing assessment tools, to study the sustainability status of Palestinian neighborhoods, and to develop a sustainable indicator model for local sustainable neighborhood assessment. Computer tools like Urbano and GIS tools as well as qualitative assessment methods are used. Results from the case study showed that the satisfaction of the preferred location indicator was not sufficient to maintain its sustainability. The assessment of measured indicators found that weaknesses were almost double the count of the satisfactory indicator. Moreover, some indicators from the (NSA) tools were partially or completely met, and some gaps appeared because of the lack of strengths in the selected indicators of the international tools when used for local social, ecological and governmental aspects, and there are issues in the inclusion of economic and environmental elements in current urban configurations. The proposed local model offers valuable insights for local governments, municipalities, and construction developers.
