AbstractRaw earth construction (RE) is an interesting alternative approach for reducing the use of conventional construction materials. The aim of this study is the stabilization of RE by a new organic binder manufactured based on algae. The stabilization is performed on the mortar scale as well as evaluated by conducting mechanical and thermal tests. Samples of mortar were manufactured based on local soil and Sargassum muticumtype algae. The incorporation weight rates of algae are 0 (reference sample), 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt.%. Results showed that the compressive and bending strengths of algae mortar were improved by 77 and 70%, respectively. In addition, it was noticed that samples with 0.63 mm maximum grain size algae binder provide higher strengths in comparison with 0.80 mm maximum grain size algae binder. It was found also that 2 wt.% of incorporated algae provide similar mechanical resistance to 15 wt.% of slaked lime. The thermal investigation of samples showed three peaks: two endothermic peaks at 100 and 800 °C, which can be respectively attributed to the desorption of H2O and CO2due to the decomposition of calcite; the third exothermic peak at 500 °C is attributed to the decomposition of the macromolecules of the algae.

In the current study, the sol-gel spin coating was used to deposit SnS thin films on ordinary glass substrates, and annealed without sulfurization at 500 °C. Different organic solvents such as ethanol, 2-methoxyethanol, and methanol were used and their influence on the properties of SnS thin films was investigated. X-ray diffraction showed that the three prepared films have an orthorhombic structure with preferred orientation along (111) plan. In addition, the obtained films from ethanol solvent present better crystallinity with larger grain sizes around to 28.19 nm. Morphological and compositional analysis was obtained with a scanning electron microscope associated with an X-ray spectrometer. The results show better texture with uniform coverage on the glass substrate of the deposited films obtained for ethanol as solvent. The optical analysis obtained from the UV–vis spectrophotometer reveals that the deposited films show a broad absorption spectrum in the visible region and the band gap was found to lie in the range of 1.51 to 1.95 eV. The four-points probe measurement revealed smaller electrical resistivity for the films obtained from ethanol 1.76 × 102(Ω.cm) and a higher conductivity 5.68 × 10−3(Ω.cm)−1.

There are two objectives to this work: enhancement of the value of grate ash from a coal heating unit, which is very abundant in the region, and the treatment of used water from the cardboard manufacturing unit. The percolation infiltration experience is undertaken on a cylindrical vertical column (h = 80 cm, S = 70.8 cm2) made up of a filtering matrix (marine sand/raw clinker/sieved clinker). For the choice of sand used, a study comparing sand taken from four beaches in the El Jadida region was undertaken, and the most calcic of the four was used. Following an optimisation based on the experimental plans methods, two interesting combinations were considered: the first comprised a 60% mass of clinkers, and the second less rich in clinker, containing a mass of just 27%. The main parameters analysed were: materials in suspension, the COD, 76% for the BOD5, the pH and the heavy metals required by Moroccan regulation. This treatment system resulted in COD being down 87%, 76% for BOD5, and 96% for materials in suspension. The COD/BOD5 ratio of waste before treatment that was greater than 4 is reduced by half. For heavy metals, there was a reduction of 81.7% for Iron, 64% for Arsenic and 50.2% for Zinc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
