1. Polaritonic states trapped by topological defects

Abstract: Abstract The miniaturization of photonic technologies calls for a deliberate integration of diverse materials to enable novel functionalities in chip-scale devices. Topological photonic systems are a promising platform to couple structured light with solid-state matter excitations and establish robust forms of 1D polaritonic transport. Here, we demonstrate a mechanism to efficiently trap mid-IR structured phonon-polaritons in topological defects of a metasurface integrated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). These defects, created by stitching displaced domains of a Kekulé-patterned metasurface, sustain localized polaritonic modes that originate from coupling of electromagnetic fields with hBN lattice vibrations. These 0D higher-order topological modes, comprising phononic and photonic components with chiral polarization, are imaged in real- and Fourier-space. The results reveal a singular radiation leakage profile and selective excitation through spin-polarized edge waves at heterogeneous topological interfaces. This offers impactful opportunities to control light-matter waves in their dimensional hierarchy, paving the way for topological polariton shaping, ultrathin structured light sources, and thermal management at the nanoscale.

Abstract: IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic impacted college student learning both globally and nationally. Current literature points to decreases in social connectedness, adverse mental health outcomes, and decreased overall learning outcomes; however, there are limited findings from higher education institutions within the Bay Area, California. There are also limited studies that examine the COVID-19 impact among public health graduate students, especially to understand how the pandemic renewed their interest in the field. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on graduate student learning experiences, social connectedness and mental health within the Master of Public Health program at San José State University in San Jose, California.MethodsWe employed a convergent mixed-methods design using a survey that quantitatively assessed student learning experiences through a retrospective pre-and post-design, and a semi-structured interview guide that qualitatively assessed student learning experiences and its relationship with mental health and social connectedness using a phenomenological design. Data were collected between September 2022 and June 2023 and analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.ResultsA total of 22 students completed the survey and four participated in follow-up semi-structured interviews. Of the 22, 12(54%) were among the 18–29-year age group, 9(41%) identified as Asian, 21(95%) identified as female, and 9(41%) identified as a first-generation college student. 3. Adiabatic topological photonic interfaces

Abstract: Abstract Topological phases of matter have been attracting significant attention across diverse fields, from inherently quantum systems to classical photonic and acoustic metamaterials. In photonics, topological phases offer resilience and bring novel opportunities to control light with pseudo-spins. However, topological photonic systems can suffer from limitations, such as breakdown of topological properties due to their symmetry-protected origin and radiative leakage. Here we introduce adiabatic topological photonic interfaces, which help to overcome these issues. We predict and experimentally confirm that topological metasurfaces with slowly varying synthetic gauge fields significantly improve the guiding features of spin-Hall and valley-Hall topological structures commonly used in the design of topological photonic devices. Adiabatic variation in the domain wall profiles leads to the delocalization of topological boundary modes, making them less sensitive to details of the lattice, perceiving the structure as an effectively homogeneous Dirac metasurface. As a result, the modes showcase improved bandgap crossing, longer radiative lifetimes and propagation distances.

4. High-speed long-wave infrared ultra-thin photodetectors

Abstract: The primary challenge for long-wavelength infrared (λ = 8–13 µm) detection has long been the mitigation of dark current while achieving a high conversion efficiency of optical to electrical signals. Often overlooked is the bandwidth of detector response, despite several existing and expected future long-wave infrared high bandwidth applications. Here, we demonstrate ultra-fast response times in long-wave infrared detectors leveraging ultra-thin absorbers. The time response of the detectors is characterized using mid-infrared femtosecond pulses generated by an optical parametric amplifier, as a function of the device temperature and operating bias, as well as excitation wavelength. An equivalent circuit model for the detectors is presented and compared to our experimental results with excellent agreement. We demonstrate detector impulse response times of 3.5 GHz). Spectral response measurements confirm that the detectors have a resonant cavity mode enhanced response in the long-wave infrared, peaking at 10.2 µm. The presented detectors offer a potential solution for a range of high-frequency applications in the long-wave infrared.

5. The RUMERTIME Process as a Protective Factor in School Attendance Problems

Abstract: The RUMERTIME Process (RP) is a five-step culturally responsive social-emotional, problem-solving, prevention-intervention strategy used to educate, equip, and empower students, educators, and families. The RP equips individuals with the abilities to recognize, understand, manage, express, and reflect on their thoughts, interactions, mindsets, and emotions (RUMERTIME) in relation to themselves, others, and the daily life challenges they face within multiple systems and settings. The RP is embedded within the Cultivating SEEDS System framework (CSS) and is utilized to equip culturally diverse communities, inclusive of students, family members, educators, and administrators, with the social-emotional skills to effectively solve student attendance problems (SAPs). The data shared in this practice intervention article are descriptive in nature and highlight the RP as a protective factor and explain its three goals. The paper consists of three parts: (a) introduction of the RP, which is embedded in the CSS framework; (b) description of implementation of the RP as integral to the Daytime Intervention Room (DIR) program; and (c) discussion of risk factors that qualified students to receive services through the DIR program as well as data that demonstrated how the RP performed as a protective factor. The DIR program was aimed at creating an alternative to out-of-school suspension (OSS) and the traditional punitive in-school suspension (ISS). The program was established in each of the four schools in an urban high-needs school district in the midwest region of the United States. The DIR program was intentionally designed to include multiple levels, stakeholders, and delivery support, thus creating a solid base for the holistic development of students, educators, and parents. In conjunction with the CSS framework, the DIR program sought to increase academic performance, decrease the number of behavior referrals, and improve attendance rates in this high-needs urban school district.

Abstract: Monocrystalline metallic nanoparticles are preferable for plasmonic applications, but grow only in polyhedral shapes, which deviate from the predominantly employed spherical shape. Through numerical simulations we have investigated possibilities for using octahedral instead of spherical Au nanoparticles in plasmonics. Our results show that the dimers of octahedral Au nanoparticles can provide higher field enhancement compared to spherical nanoparticles and that placing the octahedrons close to a metal plate can also have certain advantages compared to spheres.

8. Economically Optimal Wheat Yield, Protein and Nitrogen Use Component Responses to Varying N Supply and Genotype

Abstract: Improvements in market value of hard red spring wheat (HRS, Triticum aestivum L.) are linked to breeding efforts to increase grain protein concentration (GPC). Numerous studies have been conducted on the identification, isolation of a chromosome region (Gpc-B1) of Wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. dicoccoides) and its introgression into commercial hard wheat to GPC. Yet there has been limited research published on the comparative responsiveness of these altered lines and their parents to varied N supply. There is increased awareness that wheat genetic improvements must be assessed over a range of environmental and agronomic management conditions to assess stability. We report herein on economically optimal yield, protein and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) component responses of two Pacific Northwestern USA cultivars, Tara and Scarlet compared to backcrossed derived near isolines with or without the Gpc-B1 allele. A field experiment with 5 N rates as whole plots and 8 genotypes as subplots was conducted over two years under semi-arid, dryland conditions. One goal was to evaluate the efficacy of the Gpc-B1 allele under a range of low to high N supply. Across all genotypes, grain yield responses to N supply followed the classic Mitscherlich response model, whereas GPC followed inverse quadratic or linear responses. The Gpc-B1 introgression had no major impact on grain protein, but grain N and total above ground crop N yields demonstrated quadratic responses to total N supply. Generally, higher maximum grain yields and steeper rise to the maxima (Mitscherlich c values) were obtained in the first site-year. Tara required less N supply to achieve GPC goals than Scarlet in both site-years. Genotypes with Gpc-B1 produced comparable or slightly lower Mitscherlich A values than unmodified genotypes, but displayed similar Mitscherlich c values. Target GPC goals were not achieved at economic optimal yields based on set wheat pricing. Economic optimization of N inputs to achieve protein goals showed positive revenue from additional N inputs for most genotypes. While N uptake efficiency did not drop below 0.40, N fertilizer-induced increases in grain N harvest correlated well with unused post-harvest soil N that is potentially susceptible to environmental loss.

13. Black Feminism and Black Women’s Interactions With Faculty in Higher Education

Abstract: The legacies of slavery and exploitation continue to shape the opportunities and experiences of contemporary Black women in the United States. While college access and attainment has increased over the past few decades, Black women contend with negative stereotypes, experiences, and inequitable outcomes associated with the intersectionality of their race and gender. Feminist standpoint theory and Black feminist thought can be used as lenses to centralize Black women’s experiences and thoughts when aiming to understand how their interactions with faculty and other institutional agents can function as barriers to and facilitators of their educational persistence. When Black women feel acknowledged by faculty as competent individuals rather than stereotypes, their engagement, sense of belonging, and persistence are positively affected. Listening to and valuing the stories of Black women students is an essential step to bringing about necessary changes for educational equity on historically White campuses across the country.

19. High-speed mid-wave infrared holey photodetectors

Abstract: We demonstrate high-speed mid-wave infrared photoconductive detectors leveraging a lattice-mismatched, epitaxially grown InSb absorber material patterned with nanometer-scale hole arrays. We show that the nano-scale hole patterns allow for post-growth control over the detector response time by introducing recombination surfaces to increase non-radiative recombination. The photoconductive pixels are integrated into a microwave coplanar waveguide for high frequency characterization. The detector response is characterized as a function of temperature and hole-array dimensions. We show a detector response with characteristic time scales of tens of picoseconds and bandwidths up to 7 GHz at room temperature. The presented detectors offer a mechanism for engineering response times in long wavelength detectors for potential applications in high-speed sensing/imaging, free-space communication, ranging, or dual-comb spectroscopy.

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of women currently with or at high risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD) who were participating in a postpartum support group facilitated by mental health providers. Study design and methods Using a qualitative design, women ≥18 years of age, who had given birth within the past 2 years, and who were currently attending, or had attended the PPD support group within the past year were invited to participate. The women provided demographic data and participated in a semistructured face-to-face interview. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results Seven women between 27 and 38 years of age participated. Most were married and college educated. At time of the interviews, participants were between 5 months and 2 years postpartum and all reported taking antidepressant medications for their symptoms. Qualitative content analysis revealed three overall themes: attendance, impact, and medication adherence, with associated subthemes. Clinical implications Women attending a PPD support group facilitated by mental health providers felt supported, were more likely to disclose their symptoms to other women in the same situation, and were able to share their feelings without fear of judgment. Having concerns about antidepressant medication addressed at each meeting promoted medication adherence. Nurses working with childbearing women should be aware of community support services available for women at risk for developing PPD.

Abstract: In the field of electromagnetism, knowing the permittivity of a material can be useful. When using the scattering parameters to identify the permittivity of materials, branch discontinuities may be an issue. If they occur, branches of some systems could be neglected. This paper analyzes a theoretical solution for permittivity from the scattering parameters, particularly related to metamaterials, and shows that these branches are due to the use of the argument of an exponential function. Analyzing this exponential function can provide a unique and accurate prediction method of when branches will occur.

Abstract: Improvements in market value of hard red spring wheat (HRS, Triticum aestivum L.) are linked to breeding efforts to increase grain protein concentration (GPC). Numerous studies have been conducted on the identification, isolation of a chromosome region (Gpc-B1) of Wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. dicoccoides) and its introgression into commercial hard wheat to GPC. Yet there has been limited research published on the comparative responsiveness of these altered lines and their parents to varied N supply. There is increased awareness that wheat genetic improvements must be assessed over a range of environmental and agronomic management conditions to assess stability. We report herein on economically optimal yield, protein and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) component responses of two Pacific Northwestern USA cultivars, Tara and Scarlet compared to backcrossed derived near isolines with or without the Gpc-B1 allele. A field experiment with 5 N rates as whole plots and 8 genotypes as subplots was conducted over two years under semi-arid, dryland conditions. One goal was to evaluate the efficacy of the Gpc-B1 allele under a range of low to high N supply. Across all genotypes, grain yield responses to N supply followed the classic Mitscherlich response model, whereas GPC followed inverse quadratic or linear responses. The Gpc-B1 introgression had no major impact on grain protein, but grain N and total above ground crop N yields demonstrated quadratic responses to total N supply. Generally, higher maximum grain yields and steeper rise to the maxima (Mitscherlich c values) were obtained in the first site-year. Tara required less N supply to achieve GPC goals than Scarlet in both site-years. Genotypes with Gpc-B1 produced comparable or slightly lower Mitscherlich A values than unmodified genotypes, but displayed similar Mitscherlich c values. Target GPC goals were not achieved at economic optimal yields based on set wheat pricing. Economic optimization of N inputs to achieve protein goals showed positive revenue from additional N inputs for most genotypes. While N uptake efficiency did not drop below 0.40, N fertilizer-induced increases in grain N harvest correlated well with unused post-harvest soil N that is potentially susceptible to environmental loss.

Abstract: Quantum-relativistic materials often host electronic phenomena with exotic spatial distributions. In particular, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators feature topological boundary currents whose chirality is determined by the magnetization orientation. However, understanding the microscopic nature of edge vs. bulk currents has remained a challenge due to the emergence of multidomain states at the phase transitions. Here we use microwave impedance microscopy (MIM) to directly image chiral edge currents and phase transitions in a magnetic topological insulator. Our images reveal a dramatic change in the edge state structure and an unexpected microwave response at the topological phase transition between the Chern number [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] states, consistent with the emergence of an insulating [Formula: see text] state. The magnetic transition width is independent of film thickness, but the transition pattern is distinct in differently initiated field sweeps. This behavior suggests that the [Formula: see text] state has 2 surface states with Hall conductivities of [Formula: see text] but with opposite signs.

Abstract: Electron surface states in solids are typically confined to the outermost atomic layers and, due to surface disorder, have negligible impact on electronic transport. Here, we demonstrate a very different behavior for surface states in graphene. We probe the wavelike character of these states by Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry and find that, in contrast to theoretical predictions, these states can propagate ballistically over micron-scale distances. This is achieved by embedding a graphene resonator formed by gate-defined p-n junctions within a graphene superconductor-normal-superconductor structure. By combining superconducting Aharanov-Bohm interferometry with Fourier methods, we visualize spatially resolved current flow and image FP resonances due to p-n-p cavity modes. The coherence of the standing-wave edge states is revealed by observing a new family of FP resonances, which coexist with the bulk resonances. The edge resonances have periodicity distinct from that of the bulk states manifest in a repeated spatial redistribution of current on and off the FP resonances. This behavior is accompanied by a modulation of the multiple Andreev reflection amplitude on-and-off resonance, indicating that electrons propagate ballistically in a fully coherent fashion. These results, which were not anticipated by theory, provide a practical route to developing electron analog of optical FP resonators at the graphene edge.

Abstract: A far-reaching goal of graphene research is exploiting the unique properties of carriers to realize extreme nonclassical electronic transport. Of particular interest is harnessing wavelike carriers to guide and direct them on submicron scales, similar to light in optical fibers. Such modes, while long anticipated, have never been demonstrated experimentally. In order to explore this behavior, we employ superconducting interferometry in a graphene Josephson junction to reconstruct the real-space supercurrent density using Fourier methods. Our measurements reveal charge flow guided along crystal boundaries close to charge neutrality. We interpret the observed edge currents in terms of guided-wave states, confined to the edge by band bending and transmitted as plane waves. As a direct analog of refraction-based confinement of light in optical fibers, such nonclassical states afford new means for information transduction and processing at the nanoscale., 31 pages, including supplementary materials

Abstract: The argument presented in this article is that highly productive workplaces can be inclusive, and purposefully built to produce the goods and services demanded by customers. A socio-technical system approach can be inclusive in terms of talent and technology and is subject to deconstruction. The characterization of diversity can be made in at least two ways: based on the attributes possessed by the employees; and racial composition of the workforce. A co-constructed competency model can be applied to understand the nature and description of prevailing cultural conditions to effectively engage people to be more productive. An inclusive circle of deeply involved people can design and support the necessary change and generate the synergy, techniques, and the heuristics, to increase productivity.

Abstract: Spherical harmonic moments are well-suited for capturing anisotropy at any scale in the flux of cosmic rays. An unambiguous measurement of the full set of spherical harmonic coefficients requires full-sky coverage. This can be achieved by combining data from observatories located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. To this end, a joint analysis using data recorded at the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory above 1019 eV is presented in this work. The resulting multipolar expansion of the flux of cosmic rays allows us to perform a series of anisotropy searches, and in particular to report on the angular power spectrum of cosmic rays above 1019 eV. No significant deviation from isotropic expectations is found throughout the analyses performed. Upper limits on the amplitudes of the dipole and quadrupole moments are derived as a function of the direction in the sky, varying between 7% and 13% for the dipole and between 7% and 10% for a symmetric quadrupole., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract: Quantum confined devices that manipulate single electrons in graphene are emerging as attractive candidates for nanoelectronics applications. Previous experiments have employed etched graphene nanostructures, but edge and substrate disorder severely limit device functionality. Here we present a technique that builds quantum confined structures in suspended bilayer graphene with tunnel barriers defined by external electric fields that break layer inversion symmetry, thereby eliminating both edge and substrate disorder. We report clean quantum dot formation in two regimes: at zero magnetic field B using the single particle energy gap induced by a perpendicular electric field and at B > 0 using the quantum Hall ferromagnet �� = 0 gap for confinement. Coulomb blockade oscillations exhibit periodicity consistent with electrostatic simulations based on local top gate geometry, a direct demonstration of local control over the band structure of graphene. 45. Broken-symmetry states in doubly gated suspended bilayer graphene

Abstract: Broken Symmetries Bilayer graphene samples are expected exhibit quantum Hall states that are ferromagnetic with different types of spin ordering. Weitz et al. (p. 812 , published online 14 October) studied the conductance of high-quality suspended bilayer graphene samples. They used an applied perpendicular electric field to induce transitions between the different broken-symmetry states that appear at low carrier densities and deduced their order parameters. These states appeared in both the absence of a magnetic field, as well as in the presence of a symmetry-breaking magnetic field. They also showed that, even in absence of both an applied magnetic or electric field, the bilayer exhibits an energy gap, which indicates that electron-electron interactions contribute to the band structure.

Abstract: This article extends the work conducted by Fagan-Pryor, Femea, and Haber (1994), in which factor analyses were used to examine the congruence between aggressive behavior and type of intervention warranted (verbal, chemical, or physical), as rated by nursing personnel. The purpose of this study was to determine if 88 registered nurses (RNs) and 84 nursing assistants (NAs) would choose similar interventions for 84 aggressive behaviors. The three scales used (labeled Precursor, Defensive, and Acting Out) obtained Cronbach alpha internal consistency reliabilities ranging from .79 to .96. Analyses of variance indicated that RNs and NAs agreed on a set of precursor behaviors for which they would use therapeutic verbal intervention. RN and NA responses differed significantly only in prescribing the use of physical intervention for behaviors on the Defensive and Acting Out scales. In both situations, RNs selected fewer behaviors that required physical intervention than did NAs. Implications for clinical practice are presented.

47. Experiences of Women with Postpartum Depression Participating in a Support Group Led by Mental Health Providers.

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of women currently with or at high risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD) who were participating in a postpartum support group facilitated by mental health providers., Study Design and Methods: Using a qualitative design, women ≥18 years of age, who had given birth within the past 2 years, and who were currently attending, or had attended the PPD support group within the past year were invited to participate. The women provided demographic data and participated in a semistructured face-to-face interview. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis., Results: Seven women between 27 and 38 years of age participated. Most were married and college educated. At time of the interviews, participants were between 5 months and 2 years postpartum and all reported taking antidepressant medications for their symptoms. Qualitative content analysis revealed three overall themes: attendance, impact, and medication adherence, with associated subthemes., Clinical Implications: Women attending a PPD support group facilitated by mental health providers felt supported, were more likely to disclose their symptoms to other women in the same situation, and were able to share their feelings without fear of judgment. Having concerns about antidepressant medication addressed at each meeting promoted medication adherence. Nurses working with childbearing women should be aware of community support services available for women at risk for developing PPD.
