Περιέχει τη περίληψη. This study aimed to explore users’ perceptions of librarians working in public libraries in Greece. Specifically, it aimed to investigate how much users value librarian’s different roles; how often they seek assistance for performing specific tasks and how do they rate the assistance provided. The method of questionnaire was employed to meet the needs of this study. The relevant literature was used to inform the design of a questionnaire with overall fourteen questions. The questionnaire was handed out to users in seven public libraries located in different municipalities in the area of Attica and in total, 174 public library users participated. It was found that users perceived as more important the traditional roles of public librarians namely promoting reading, information retrieval, consultation in information search as well as providing instruction in the selection and use of information. Evolving roles of public librarian such as technology specialist, facilitating socialisation or providing support to people in e-government services, in seeking information regarding health issues as well as in job seeking were not highlighted as important. This research contributes in increasing our understanding of the way users perceive public librarians’ roles and value the offered services. It is one of the few studies investigating users’ perceptions of librarian’s roles.

Specifically, it focuses on exploring users’ perceptions regarding librarians’ status, work duties, performed work and educational background.Design/methodology/approach The method of questionnaire was used to enquire on the users’ perceptions of six different public libraries in the wide area of Attica, Greece. Between November 2014 and February 2015, 320 questionnaires were distributed, and, in total, 291 users participated in the study with response rate 90.9 per cent.Findings This research revealed that public library users have a positive image of the librarians’ status, duties and work performed. Users acknowledge that it is important for librarians to obtain a bachelor’s degree in library and information science (LIS) education and specialized LIS knowledge, as well as general, pedagogical and new technologies knowledge to perform their tasks. Overall, “serving of people” predominates as a task and a series of collection-oriented tasks.Research limitations/implications Perceptions of non-users of public libraries and public librarians themselves were not examined in this study. In addition, some user groups based on level of education (e.g. doctoral degree) had a low level of participation.Originality/value It is one of the few studies that examined public library users’ perceptions of information professionals.

Libraries as information organisations are transformed into innovation incubators because of the fluid information environment, the social and economic influences and their desire to advance the public good. The Greek public libraries of Nafpaktos, Levadia and Veria are known examples of libraries that have successfully embraced change and innovation. This research aims to identify, through a content analysis of these specific public libraries' websites, the innovative services they offer to the community. Findings-It was found that the chosen public libraries offer a wide range of innovative services (e.g. Media Lab, Information Centres). Job satisfaction is critical to life satisfaction, to the quality of employees' working life, and to their performance and organizational commitment. Using the theory of work values, job satisfaction of information professionals working in academic, special, public and school libraries as well as in archives and private companies is examined. Data were obtained through a questionnaire distributed to different types of information organizations. The results showed that the information professionals were satisfied with their jobs. Job satisfaction was predicted by intrinsic work values, namely the opportunities for learning, expression of creativity, autonomy, use of knowledge and abilities, and adoption of innovative technological developments. The analysis also indicated significant differences in the sources of job satisfaction (extrinsic, social and prestige work values) among professionals employed in four types of information organizations (academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries and archives). Professionals in special libraries were more satisfied with extrinsic work values than those in public libraries and archives. Professionals working in public libraries were more satisfied with prestige work values than those employed in academic libraries and archives. Finally, it was indicated that professionals in archives were less satisfied with social work values than their colleagues in public and special libraries. Περιέχει τη περίληψη Library and Information Science (LIS) has for a long time tried to gain legitimacy. In an ever changing environment due to technological and economic developments, the motivations behind choice of LIS are still of great interest. The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of studies investigating the motivations that determine the choice of LIS. Design/methodology/approach – Different search terms were run on different but relevant databases. A number of inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and in total 45 papers were judged as relevant to choice of LIS discipline. A thorough analysis of these papers’ content revealed three main themes: choice of LIS, choice of LIS specialty and career change to LIS. Findings – A variety of different motivations for choosing LIS were identified. The same motivations were reported in all groups (high school students, students, professionals). Specifically, love of books and reading, nature of library work, desire to help people were among the most reported motivations. LIS was also chosen as a second career by different professionals mainly due to changes in their first career work environment, the nature of library work, the desire to use knowledge and the transferable skills in their new career. Research limitations/implications – This study considered only peer-reviewed research published between 2000 and 2014 in English. Specifically, it focussed on the motivations that specific groups chose to study LIS both as first and second career. Practical implications – Library schools could raise awareness among high school students regarding the value, role and importance of LIS. Originality/value – This paper examines the factors influencing the choice of LIS in a changing information environment, and sheds light on the individuals’ decision-making process attracted to LIS.

Περιέχει τη περίληψη This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the specific roles information professionals have adopted in the past 14 years. It aims to identify the roles reported in the literature concerning developments in the Library and Information Science (LIS) profession. Design/methodology/approach -- This study adopted the method of systematic review. Searches were conducted in February and March 2014 on different LIS databases. From a total of 600 papers, 114 were selected, based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. A thorough full-text analysis of the papers revealed six roles that librarians have adopted: teachers, technology specialists, embedded librarians, information consultants, knowledge managers and subject librarians. Findings -- New and evolving roles were identified, mainly in the context of academic libraries. Librarians' educational responsibilities and their active involvement in the learning and research process were highlighted in all role categories identified. Collaboration among faculty and librarians was reported as a way of ensuring successful instruction. Librarians' personal views of their new and emerging roles were more frequently reported; further research is needed to shed light on academics, students and other users' perceptions of librarians' engagement in the learning process. Research limitations -- The study considered only peer-reviewed papers published between 2000 and 2014 in English. It focused on information professionals' roles and not on librarians' skills and their changing professional responsibilities. Originality/value -- This review paper considers the development of the LIS profession in a changing environment and offers an understanding of the future direction of the LIS profession.

Περιέχει τη περίληψη This paper aims to provide a systematic review on library and information science (LIS) profession’s image and stereotypes from 1999 to 2013. In particular, it aims to identify and analyze the prevailing images of librarians in various contexts and explore possible changes occurring over time. Design/methodology/approach – The method of systematic review is adopted to identify the prevailing images in LIS profession. Specifically, 60 papers were selected and five main themes emerged such as “public’s perceptions”, “librarians’ perceptions”, “students’ perceptions”, “mass media” and “image as an issue” after a thorough analysis of papers’ aim. Findings – It was found that librarians were negatively perceived by both the wider public and the students. In terms of mass media, the image of “the old maid” was dominant, whereas newspapers focused on the male librarian who was perceived as glamorous. Positive stereotypes were also found in children books. On the whole, librarian’s image and relevant stereotypes have not changed considerably over time. Research limitations/implications – This literature review considered only papers published between 2000 and 2013 and only in English mainly due to language restrictions. Originality/value – This review identifies, critically analyzes and discusses the literature on the prevailing images and stereotypes associated with LIS profession in the past 13 years. In addition, it attempts to identify and discuss any changes that occurred in this time frame.

Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο Στην ερευνητική αυτή μελέτη εξετάζονται οι λόγοι για τους οποίους τα νέα άτομα επιλέγουν την επιστήμη της πληροφόρησης ως τομέα σπουδών και διερευνάται η εκπαιδευτική τους διαδρομή, στο πλαίσιο των συγκεκριμένων τμημάτων. Η εργασία υποστηρίζεται από ένα πλέγμα θεωρητικών εννοιών, οι οποίες διαμορφώθηκαν με αναφορά στις θεωρίες του Bourdieu και της συμβολικής αλληλεπίδρασης και οι οποίες αναδεικνύουν τον κοινωνικό και σύνθετο χαρακτήρα των εκπαιδευτικών επιλογών. Κομβικής σημασίας είναι η έννοια της εκπαιδευτικής καριέρας, η οποία παρέχει τη δυνατότητα ενιαίας θεώρησης της επιλογής της επιστήμης της πληροφόρησης και της διαδρομής των φοιτητών κατά τη διάρκεια της φοίτησής τους στα αντίστοιχα τμήματα. Από μεθοδολογική άποψη, επιλέχθηκε μια διερευνητική προσέγγιση, η οποία στόχευε στη βαθύτερη κατανόηση των εκπαιδευτικών επιλογών και του τρόπου με τον οποίο τα νέα άτομα αποτιμούν καταστάσεις, διαμορφώνουν φιλοδοξίες και λαμβάνουν αποφάσεις. Για τη συλλογή των δεδομένων της εμπειρικής έρευνας, η οποία διεξήχθη σε δύο στάδια με τη χρήση ερωτηματολογίου και ημι-δομημένων συνεντεύξεων και για την επεξεργασία των πληροφοριών αξιοποιήθηκαν τόσο ποσοτικές όσο και ποιοτικές μέθοδοι και τεχνικές. Η εξέταση των ποσοτικών στοιχείων με ποιοτικές παραμέτρους και οι θεωρητικές μας αφετηρίες οδήγησαν στην κατασκευή αναλυτικών εργαλείων όπως ο Δείκτης Εκπαιδευτικής Πορείας και ο Δείκτης Απόκλισης που βοήθησαν σημαντικά στον προσδιορισμό, την κατανόηση των εσωτερικών διαφοροποιήσεων του δείγματος και την ερμηνεία των εκπαιδευτικών τους επιλογών. Η ανάπτυξη τρόπων οργάνωσης των δεδομένων αλλά και η συνεχής μετακίνηση από τις θεωρητικές έννοιες στο εμπειρικό υλικό επέτρεψαν περιγραφές, οι οποίες ανέδειξαν τη συνθετότητα των επιλογών και των εκπαιδευτικών διαδρομών, ως κοινωνικών διαδικασιών. Στα κυριότερα ευρήματα της έρευνας περιλαμβάνονται η σύνδεση που διαπιστώθηκε μεταξύ ομάδων του δείγματος, που διαφοροποιούνται ως προς τα κοινωνικά τους χαρακτηριστικά, και των εικόνων από τις οποίες ελκύονται οι φοιτητές στην επιλογή της επιστήμης της πληροφόρησης. Σημαντικά είναι, επίσης, τα ευρήματα που αφορούν τους τρόπους με τους οποίους τα νέα άτομα επαναπροσδιορίζουν συνεχώς τη θέση τους στο πεδίο της πληροφόρησης, μέσω διαδικασιών διαπραγμάτευσης του νοήματος, καθώς και τα συμβολικά μέσα που χρησιμοποιούν προκειμένου να αξιοδοτήσουν το αντικείμενο που μελετούν. Στην εργασία αναδείχθηκαν οι μετασχηματισμοί που επήλθαν στις απόψεις των φοιτητών, σε σχέση με το αντικείμενο των σπουδών τους και τις διαδρομές που σχεδιάζουν, οι οποίες συναρτώνται με τη δυνατότητά τους να κεφαλαιοποιούν τους πόρους που διαθέτουν, σε σχέση και με το habitus των εκπαιδευτικών ιδρυμάτων. Σημαντική είναι, τέλος, η διαπίστωση ότι τα τμήματα Βιβλιοθηκονομίας και Πληροφόρησης, στο σύνολό τους, τείνουν να προωθούν αξίες που συνδέονται περισσότερο με το επάγγελμα παρά με την επιστήμη, αναπαράγοντας ισχυρές επαγγελματικές ταυτότητες. Το στοιχείο αυτό φαίνεται να ασκεί διαφοροποιητική επίδραση στις διαδρομές και τις ευκαιρίες των φοιτητών, αντίστοιχη με τα κοινωνικά τους χαρακτηριστικά. Συνολικά, στην εργασία αυτή τεκμηριώνεται η άποψη ότι ατομικοί, οικογενειακοί, κοινωνικοί και ιδρυματικοί παράγοντες καθώς και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο τα νέα άτομα διαχειρίζονται τυχαία γεγονότα και κοινωνικές και προσωπικές σχέσεις ασκούν επίδραση στην επιλογή της επιστήμης της πληροφόρησης, διευκολύνουν ή δυσχεραίνουν την πορεία τους και επενεργούν στη συγκρότηση της παιδαγωγικής τους ταυτότητας στο πλαίσιο του συγκεκριμένου γνωστικού τομέα.

Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο Using Bourdieu-inspired sociological literature, this paper aims to report on a study that examines the educational choices of new entrants in the three library and information science (LIS) schools operating in Greece at the undergraduate level, with reference to their socio-cultural characteristics. Design/methodology/approach – Data were obtained through a questionnaire, distributed to 187 LIS students, aiming to address the question of what attracted them to the LIS field. Findings – Analysis reveals three distinctive student groups in the sample and shows that these differ in respect to the reasons attracting them to LIS. The first group, with restricted cultural resources at their disposal, is attracted only by extrinsic reasons, namely the prospect of immediate employment. The second group, of middle level parental education, is attracted by intrinsic reasons, most notably the qualitative characteristics of the field as a future profession. This group seems to use these qualities to preserve the belief in an upwards moving and successful educational career. Qualities attracting the students of the third group, when examined with reference to their socio-cultural characteristics, indicate that the choice of subject made is linked to their socially acquired ability to recognise what may be promising regarding possible future LIS career paths. This is in contrast to students from low socio-cultural backgrounds, who seem not to have access to the high cultural resources the LIS field requires for “decoding” and understanding its hidden possibilities. Originality/value – This paper uses socio-cultural explanations of students’ choice of LIS as a field of study, contributing methodologically and substantively to this area of research.

Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο Την τελευταία δεκαπενταετία εκφράζεται ενδιαφέ ρον από το διδακτικό προσωπικό των εκπαιδευτικών ιδρυμάτων, τους ερευνητές στον τομέα της Βιβλιοθη­ κονομίας και Πληροφόρησης και τις επαγγελματικές ενώσεις για τις αλλαγές που επισυμβαίνουν στον τομέα της πληροφόρησης. Η επιστημονική συζήτη αναφορικά με το μετασχηματισμό του θεσμού των βιβλιοθηκων σε συγχρόνους πληροφοριακούς οργανισμους δημιουργεί ενα ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον τόσο σχετικά με το είδος των δεξιοτήτων που απαιτούν οι νέοι ρόλοι των επαγγελματιών του τομέα αυτού, όσο και με τα χαρακτηριστικά, τα σχέδια και τις φιλοδο­ξίες των ατόμων που εισάγονται στα τμήματα Βιβλιο­θηκονομίας και Πληροφόρησης. Στην παρούσα εισήγηση θα παρουσιαστούν οι ερευ­νητικές μελέτες που εντοπίστηκαν μέσω μιας συστη­ματικής επισκόπησης της σχετικής με το θέμα βιβλιογραφίας και θα συζητηθούν τα βασικά συμπε­ ράσματα στα οποία οδηγεί η κριτική ανάλυση τους. Η βασική διαπίστωση ότι η εκπαίδευση των φοιτητών στον τομέα της Βιβλιοθηκονομίας και Πληροφόρη­σης είναι μια περιοχή έρευνας στην οποία δεν έχει δοθεί ιδιαίτερη σημασία, υποδεικνύει την ανάγκη για την ανάπτυξη μιας προβληματικής η οποία θα επιτρέ­ψει τη μελέτη της εκπαιδευτικής πορείας και συγκρό­τησης των ταυτοτήτων των εκπαιδευομένων στον τομέα αυτό στη σημερινή κρίσιμη συγκυρία.

Οι αλλαγές στο μοντέλο των σύγχρονων βιβλιοθηκών μελετώνται και διερευνώνται ως προς τις απαιτήσεις που προβάλλουν στη θεωρητική και πρακτική εκπαίδευση των επαγγελματιών. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, εκφράζεται ο σύγχρονος προβληματισμός στη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, απόψεις σπουδαστών που μόλις αποφοίτησαν και βιβλιοθηκονόμων σε θέματα που αφορούν την εκπαίδευση και αναφέρονται επιμέρους στόχοι για τη διαμόρφωση ευέλικτων προγραμμάτων σπουδών, τα οποία θα υποστηρίζουν τις απαιτήσεις μιας πολυπολιτισμικής κοινωνίας και θα παρέχουν τις επαγγελματικές δεξιότητες που απαιτούνται στο περιβάλλον της κοινωνίας της πληροφορίας. Γίνεται, τέλος, συνοπτική παρουσίαση των ενεργειών του Τμήματος Βιβλιοθηκονομίας και Συστημάτων Πληροφόρησης του Τ.Ε.Ι. Αθήνας για να ανταποκριθεί στη συνεχώς αυξανόμενη απαίτηση για ταχείες και αποτελεσματικές προσαρμογές.
