Library material, and thus parchment, is frequently subjected to bio-deterioration processes caused by microorganisms. Fungi and bacteria cause alterations in the parchment inducing, in some cases, even the partial detachments of the surface layer and the loss of any text present on it. An important contribution to disinfection of the cultural heritage artefacts is given by the use of ionizing radiation. In this work, a preliminary study on the applicability of X-ray radiation as treatment for bio-deterioration removal is proposed. The results on the microbial growth after different irradiation treatments are shown in order to detect the dose protocol for the bio-degradation removal. Furthermore, the evaluation of the irradiation effects on the parchment microstructure is presented in order to define the applicability of the method on parchment artefacts.

The REX system is based on a linear electron accelerator and a removable head containing an electron to X-ray converter with its collimator. The machine and the irradiation chamber were manufactured and commissioned at ENEA Frascati Research Center. The activity of the Laboratory for Development of Particle Accelerators and Medical Applications is dedicated to the development of particle accelerators (electrons and protons) for medical, industrial and research applications, realized as sections of complex equipment or as stand-alone machine and offers related services to the scientific community. The REX facility is a versatile irradiation machine thought to be used for experimental campaigns in different research fields thanks to its customizable beam. Some of the cases we performed are related to irradiation of biological systems, development of in-beam monitoring devices, test of beam monitors, material radiation damage studies and cultural heritage. Experiments are carried out for specimen treatment with the two-radiation quality: electrons and X-rays. An overview of the laboratory and of the activities performed with the REX facility in its present status are given in this work and specific attention is devoted to the application on the cultural heritage for the preservation and conservation of artefacts.

Solid-state radiation detectors based on the visible photoluminescence of radiation-induced F2 and F3+ color centers in lithium fluoride crystals have been used for advanced diagnostics of 18 and 27 MeV proton beams, produced by the TOP-IMPLART linear accelerator, which is under development for protontherapy applications at ENEA C.R. Frascati, Italy. Visible fluorescence microscopy was successfully used to read the latent proton beam images stored in the lithium fluoride crystals, thanks to high emission efficiency of the F2 and F3+ color centers obtained by simultaneous optical excitation in the blue spectral range. High intrinsic spatial resolution and wide dynamic range of these novel LiF detectors allow obtaining two-dimensional images of both the beam transverse intensity distribution and of the Bragg curve. By using a simple defect formation model that takes into account the energy released in the material and the saturation of defect concentration, not only the two-dimensional dose map was obtained from the beam transverse intensity distribution image, but also the full Bragg curve was reconstructed, allowing the thorough characterization of proton beams produced by the accelerator.

We present the first results of a novel collaboration activity between ENEA Frascati Particle Accelerator Laboratory and University La Sapienza Guidance and Navigation Laboratory in the field of Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) for space applications. The aim of this research is twofold: (a) demonstrating the possibility to use the TOP-IMPLART proton accelerator for radiation hardness assurance testing, developing ad hoc dosimetric and operational procedures for RHA irradiations; (b) investigating system level radiation testing strategies for Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components of interest for SmallSats space missions, with focus on devices and sensors of interest for guidance, navigation and control, through simultaneous exploration of Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Displacement Damage (DD) dose and Single-Event Effects (SEE) with proton beams. A commercial 6-axis integrated Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial navigation system (accelerometer, gyroscope) was selected as first Device Under Test (DUT). The results of experimental tests aimed to define an operational procedure and the characterization of radiation effects on the component are reported, highlighting the consequence of the device performance degradation in terms of the overall navigation system accuracy. Doses up to 50 krad(Si) were probed and cross sections for Single-Event Functional Interrupt (SEFI) evaluated at a proton energy of 30 MeV.

With the aim to establish advantages and limitations of techniques commonly employed for material characterization of Cultural Heritage objects, we performed comparative measurements by LIBS, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) on four typologies of materials. The samples include: 1) egg tempera pigments on gypsum ground; 2) oil paints on gypsum ground with light or dark imprimitura; 3) fragments of decorated glazed ceramic, and 4) ancient Roman coins. The optimal choice of an analytical instrument depends also on the sample type, its dimensions and transportability, and for these reasons our measurements involved two types of instruments per technique. The LIBS probing was done by a table-top instrument (on coins and ceramics) and by a stand-off system at distance of 9.5 m (on pigments). The XRF measurements involved a laboratory micro-XRF system (on coins) and a portable instrument (on pigments and ceramics). The PIXE analyses were obtained by TOP-IMPLART accelerator at ENEA Frascati, using a low energy line that produces the proton beam with adjustable energy between 3 and 7 MeV (used for the pigments and ceramics), and by INFN-LABEC system with proton energy of 3 MeV and complemented by Elastic Backscattering Spectrometry (EBS), for coin samples. Results relevant to quantitative analysis of major sample constituents, identification of trace components, and stratigraphy are reported and discussed for the examined typologies of samples.

In the framework of the COBRA project, elemental analyses of cultural heritage objects based on the particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) are planned in a collaboration between the APAM laboratory of ENEA-Frascati and the LABEC laboratory of INFN in Florence. With this aim a 3–7 MeV pulsed proton beam, driven by the injector of the protontherapy accelerator under construction for the TOP-IMPLART project, will be used to demonstrate the feasibility of the technique with a small-footprint pulsed accelerator to Italian small and medium enterprises interested in the composition analysis of ancient artifacts. The experimental set-up for PIXE analysis on the TOP-IMPLART machine consists of a modified assembly of the vertical beam line usually dedicated to radiobiology experiments: the beam produced by the injector (RFQ + DTL, a PL7 ACCSYSHITACHI model) is bent to 90° by a magnet, is collimated by a 300 μm aperture inserted in the end nozzle and extracted into ambient pressure by an exit window consisting of a Upilex foil 7.5 μm thick. The beam is pulsed with a variable pulse duration of 20–100 μs and a repetition rate variable from 10 to 100 Hz. The X-ray detection system is based on a Ketek Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) with 7 mm2 active area and 450 μm thickness, with a thin Beryllium entrance window (8 μm). The results of the calibration of this new PIXE set-up using thick target standards and of the analysis of the preliminary measurements on pigments are presented.

This paper presents the experimental results on the Terapia Oncologica con Protoni-Intensity Modulated Proton Linear Accelerator (TOP-IMPLART) beam that is currently accelerated up to 35 MeV, with a final target of 150 MeV. The TOP-IMPLART project, funded by the Innovation Department of Regione Lazio (Italy), is led by Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Health and the Oncological Hospital Regina Elena-IFO. The accelerator, under construction and test at ENEA-Frascati laboratories, employs a commercial 425 MHz, 7 MeV injector followed by a sequence of 3 GHz accelerating modules consisting of side coupled drift tube linac (SCDTL) structures up to 71 MeV and coupled cavity linac structures for higher energies. The section from 7 to 35 MeV, consisting on four SCDTL modules, is powered by a single 10 MW klystron and has been successfully commissioned. This result demonstrates the feasibility of a ``fully linear'' proton therapy accelerator operating at a high frequency and paves the way to a new class of machines in the field of cancer treatment.

The Intensity Modulated Proton Linear Accelerator for Cancer Therapy (TOP-IMPLART) is under development and construction by ENEA in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Health (ISS) and the Oncological Hospital Regina Elena-IFO with financial support of Regione Lazio. Its peculiar time structure (few microseconds pulse width) and very high peak intensity (≍ 109 proton/pulse) demand for ad hoc dose delivery monitors (DDM). The TOP-IMPLART DDM is based on ionization gas chambers. One segmented chamber prototype uses Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector technology for the 2-dimensional simultaneous x/y readout; the charge collected from each active segment (strips with pad-like shape) is readout by a dedicated gain-adaptable electronics. Two small, highly sensitive, integral ionization chambers, using the same electronics, complement the 2D chamber for the monitor of the single pulse beam charge, down to 1 pC/pulse. While under development and deployment of its accelerating modular cavities, the linear TOP-IMPLART beam is improved thanks also to the continuous monitoring and characterization by these devices, whose responses are periodically compared to calibrated dosimetric detectors such as real-time active microDiamond sensor, passive Alanine pellets, intrinsically stable integral Faraday Cup. Different calibration campaigns have been recently conducted to measure the recombination and dose-rate effects on the above ionization chambers. The outcome of these measurements shows clear electron-ion recombination in the chamber active volume, largely related to the high beam intensity and its small transverse cross section. Those effects can be taken into account and used to correct the actual measurement of the DDM. In this paper, the TOP-IMPLART project and the DDM devices are shortly presented and details of the above experimental studies are discussed.

Scientific investigation is very important in studies addressing issues of archaeological and historical objects. Ion beam analysis (IBA) and macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) spectroscopy are remarkable tools to obtain information about elemental composition and imaging of historical artefacts with a non-invasive character. These investigation techniques were employed in the framework of a project aimed at supporting the characterization of materials and techniques related with the Roman wall painting. The archaeological excavations at Villa della Piscina in Rome have revealed a luxury building with a large pool (about 50 m long) and thermal baths and numerous fragments of plaster, coming from intentional demolitions referable to two distinct architectural contexts of the Villa during the imperial age, have been found. This work deals with studying the interesting wall pictorial apparatus of great cultural value of the heritage inherited from the Roman age in the area of the ancient city of Rome. The colour palette of the pigments investigated, in particular, by MA-XRF and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and has revealed Fe, Cu, Pb, Si and Hg as main elements. Traces of other constituents uncover the choice of the different colours chosen by the artists who had embellished the rooms of the Villa.

Bio-deterioration poses a serious risk in the preservation of ancient parchments. The deteriorating effects of microorganism can affect the surface layers of a membrane sheet causing the total loss of the written text and/or the decorative apparatus of which it is the vehicle. In this work the use of the X-ray radiation performed by an experimental setup, designed at ENEA Frascati, is proposed to inhibit the microbial growth. In order to find the most suitable dose for this purpose and to evaluate the deteriorating effect produced by the irradiation, a series of modern parchment samples has been treated and analysed by means of two microscopic techniques, namely Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The combined use of these techniques allows the assessment of alterations in the surface morphology and in the fibrillary networking of the collagen molecule within the parchment, thus enabling the evaluation of the applicability and suitability of the disinfection method proposed.

In this work, an experimental method based on the use of pulsed thermography is proposed for the depth-resolved characterization of double-layered structures of cultural heritage items. A quantitative evaluation of the inspected features was achieved by comparing thermographic data with theoretical predictions provided by specifically developed theoretical models for the analysis of the thermographic signal. In this respect, thermographic models for both optically opaque and semi-transparent materials were employed to analyze the results obtained in copper alloys and paper-based original artworks, respectively. Thermographic inspections aimed at establishing the procedure adopted for the application of insertions in ancient bronze statues are presented. Finally, the evaluation of the depth position of graphical features buried beneath leaves of historical books is proposed.

Passive solid-state radiation detectors, based on the radiophotoluminescence of stable color centers in nominally pure lithium fluoride (LiF) crystals, have been used for advanced diagnostics of the segment up to 35 MeV of the TOP-IMPLART proton linear accelerator for protontherapy applications, under development at ENEA Frascati. In LiF, proton beams generate a spatial distribution of F2 and F3+ aggregate color centers, which efficiently emit radiophotoluminescence in the red-green spectral range under optical pumping around 450 nm. LiF crystals were irradiated with 35 MeV nominal energy protons at several doses of interest for protontherapy (from 0.5 to 50 Gy). For the first time is shown here the possibility of measuring the radiophotoluminescence spectra of proton irradiated LiF even at such low doses and how the signal showed a linear behavior with dose with a good signal-to-noise ratio. A Bragg-curve image, stored as color-center distribution in a LiF crystal after a 50 Gy-dose irradiation in a particular geometry, was acquired in a conventional fluorescence microscope. After appropriate image processing, the signal intensity resulted to be proportional to the linear energy transfer along the whole Bragg curve. By best-fitting it with an ad-hoc analytical formula, the depth-dose distribution was reconstructed and the proton beam energy and energy spread were estimated.

The application of science and technology to the knowledge and protection of cultural heritage can help the experts in conservation of historical assets to develop new strategies.A multidisciplinary approach makes to tackle the issues of evaluation, restoration, use and enhancement in a more mature way. Physics and biology sciences applied to the care and diagnosis of cultural heritage is an innovative research field capable of giving unreleased answers to problems still open.As part of the activities undertaken in collaboration between the nuclear fusion technologies and safety department of the ENEA Frascati research center and the Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, an innovative approach has been developed to the study and handling of library goods in general and parchment supports in particular.The aim of our work has been to demonstrate the applicability of bio-degradation removal treatments through ionizing radiation in a non-invasive and safe way and to the characterize the material from the microbiological and opto-thermal point of view.

In the framework of the Italian TOP-IMPLART project (Regione Lazio), ENEA-Frascati, ISS and IFO are developing and constructing the first proton linear accelerator based on an actively scanned beam for tumor radiotherapy with final energy of 150 MeV. An important feature of this accelerator is modularity: an exploitable beam can be delivered at any stage of its construction, which allows for immediate characterization and virtually continuous improvement of its performance. Currently, a sequence of 3 GHz accelerating modules combined with a commercial injector operating at 425 MHz delivers protons up to 35 MeV. Several dosimetry systems were used to obtain preliminary characteristics of the 35-MeV beam in terms of stability and homogeneity. Short-term stability and homogeneity better than 3% and 2.6%, respectively, were demonstrated; for stability an improvement with respect to the respective value obtained for the previous 27 MeV beam.

Purpose: To study EBT3 GafChromic film in low-energy protons, and for comparison purposes, in a reference 60Co beam in order to use it as a calibrated dosimetry system in the proton irradiation facility under construction within the framework of the Oncological Therapy with Protons (TOP)-Intensity Modulated Proton Linear Accelerator for RadioTherapy (IMPLART) Project at ENEA-Frascati, Italy. Methods: EBT3 film samples were irradiated at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare—Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, with a 5 MeV proton beam generated by a 7 MV Van de Graaff CN accelerator. The nominal dose rates used were 2.1 Gy/min and 40 Gy/min. The delivered dose was determined by measuring the particle fluence and the energy spectrum in air with silicon surface barrier detector monitors. A preliminary study of the EBT3 film beam quality dependence in low-energy protons was conducted by passively degrading the beam energy. EBT3 films were also irradiated at ENEA-National Institute of Ionizing Radiation Metrology with gamma radiation produced by a 60Co source characterized by an absorbed dose to water rate of 0.26 Gy/min as measured by a calibrated Farmer type ionization chamber. EBT3 film calibration curves were determined by means of a set of 40 film pieces irradiated to various doses ranging from 0.5 Gy to 30 Gy absorbed dose to water. An EPSON Expression 11000XL color scanner in transmission mode was used for film analysis. Scanner response stability, intrafilm uniformity, and interfilm reproducibility were verified. Optical absorption spectra measurements were performed on unirradiated and irradiated EBT3 films to choose the most sensitive color channel to the dose range used. Results: EBT3 GafChromic films show an under response up to about 33% for low-energy protons with respect to 60Co gamma radiation, which is consistent with the linear energy transfer dependence already observed with higher energy protons, and a negligible dose-rate dependence in the 2–40 Gy/min range. Short- and long-term scanner stabilities were 0.5% and 1.5%, respectively; film uniformity and reproducibility were better than 0.5%. Conclusions: The main purpose of this study was to implement EBT3 dosimetry in the proton low-energy radiobiology line of the TOP-IMPLART accelerator, having a maximum energy of 7 MeV. Low-energy proton and 60Co calibrated sources were used to investigate the behavior of film response vs to be written in italicum dose. The calibration in 5 MeV protons is currently used for dose assessment in the radiobiological experiments at the TOP-IMPLART accelerator carried out at that energy value.

The first proton linear accelerator for tumor therapy based on an actively scanned beam up to the energy of 150 MeV, is under development and construction by ENEA-Frascati, ISS and IFO, under the Italian TOP-IMPLART project. Protons up to the energy of 7 MeV are generated by a customized commercial injector operating at 425 MHz; currently three accelerating modules allow proton delivery with energy up to 27 MeV. Beam homogeneity and reproducibility were studied using a 2D ionizing chamber, EBT3 films, a silicon diode, MOSFETs, LiF crystals and alanine dosimetry systems. Measurements were taken in air with the detectors at ~1 m from the beam line exit window. The maximum energy impinging on the detectors surface was 24.1 MeV, an energy suitable for radiobiological studies. Results showed beam reproducibility within 5% and homogeneity within 4%, on a circular surface of 16mm in diameter. © The Author(s) 2018.

The TOP-IMPLART, a new proton therapy facility, is under development in Frascati ENEA Laboratories, near Rome. The project is centered on a medium-energy proton accelerator designed as a sequence of modular linear accelerators (the final energy will be 230 MeV). Being not a commercial product, measurements and simulation are fundamental to characterize the system and the radiation field, even during its construction. In this work some preliminary evaluations of the neutron contamination have been tried. The simulations were validated through some measurements obtaining a satisfactory agreement. A more detailed calculations and measurements campaign is scheduled for the next future.

Metal membranes mainly made of Pd alloys can be applied in membrane reformers for ultrapure hydrogen production from hydrocarbons and alcohols. Knowledge of the hydrogen mass transfer mechanisms through metals is very important to the purpose of properly designing and operating the membrane reactors. With the aim of understanding the deviations from the ideal behavior of the transport mechanisms predicted by the Sieverts' law, a permeation model which takes into account the surface effects has been applied to the permeability measurements that have been carried out on dense Pd-Ag permeator tubes from 473 to 623 K. The model has been validated by the results of permeation tests in a wide range of pressure (200-800 kPa) and membrane thickness (84-200 μm). The new model modifies the Sieverts' law by introducing the mass transfer resistances due to surface effects. The values of the surface resistance and permeability calculated by the model have been compared with the literature. Finally, the new hydrogen permeation expression has been applied in order to analyze the cost of a separation system which would consist of tubular Pd-based membranes. © 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. The APAM (Development of Particle Accelerators and Medical Applications) Laboratory of the ENEA Frascati Research Center is engaged in the preservation of cultural heritage as part of the COBRA (Sviluppo e diffusione di metodi, tecnologie e strumenti avanzati per la COnservazione dei Beni culturali, basati sull’applicazione di Radiazioni e di tecnologie Abilitanti) project addressed to the transfer of innovative technologies and methodologies from research to small and medium enterprises involved in the restorative measures. This work aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of ionizing radiation on the disinfection of biodegraded art objects. The conventional methods for the disinfestation of works of art, using chemicals toxic to humans and environment, might cause some damage to the treated material even on micrometric scale (i. e. either cellulose degradation). Ionizing radiations interact with the infesting biological material causing an irreversible DNA degradation. For this reason, they are certainly suitable for removal treatments of both macro organisms and bacterial colonies. A 4.8 MeV electron linear accelerator, normally dedicated to the characterization of dose detectors and radiographies, has been employed to produce Bremsstrahlung X-rays through a lead converter. The spectral fluence of the radiation source has been calculated using the Monte Carlo MCNPX code. The dosimetric characterization of the radiation field has been made using radiochromic films sensitive in the dose range of our interest (from 50 to 500 Gy) calibrated with a Markus ionization chamber. The irradiation of the artifact prototypes are made within a lead shielded room at a variable distance from the X-rays source. Samples subjected to irradiation consist of a soil bacterium, Agrobacterium rhizogenes , and an insect, Stegobium paniceum , that are found as wall paintings invasive coloniser and as a pest of books, wood works and paintings, respectively. Tests of irradiation have been performed on pest organisms as well as on woods mock-ups to evaluate potential damage to the material during the sterilization. The growing capacity of the treated bacterial cells re-cultured at the end of the treatment was evaluated on the bacterial sample and resulted to strongly inhibit cell growth during post-irradiation incubation, so that after incubation periods at 28 °C, no significant cell growth was observed. The induced levels of insect mortality and sterility vs absorbed dose and operative conditions have been also evaluated, demonstrating the induction of full sterility since the lower dose and 40% mortality by two days after the higher dose treatment. The experiments proved the ability to efficaciously treat objects of cultural heritage with X-rays in order to prevent the increase of the biodeterioration without damaging the materials: in fact, mechanical tests on both irradiated and not irradiated woods have demonstrated the absence of any induced degradation after the radiation exposition.

Solid-state radiation detectors based on the photoluminescence of stable point defects in lithium fluoride crystals have been used for advanced diagnostics during the commissioning of the segment up to 27 MeV of the TOP-IMPLART proton linear accelerator for proton therapy applications, under development at ENEA C.R. Frascati, Italy. The LiF detectors high intrinsic spatial resolution and wide dynamic range allow obtaining two-dimensional images of the beam transverse intensity distribution and also identifying the Bragg peak position with micrometric precision by using a conventional optical fluorescence microscope. Results of the proton beam characterization, among which, the estimation of beam energy components and dynamics, are reported and discussed for different operating conditions of the accelerator. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a well-known dosimeter material and is sensitive to any kind of ionizing radiation. A linear accelerator for protontherapy under development at ENEA C.R. Frascati was used to irradiate LiF crystals and thin films at room temperature with proton beams of 3 and 7 MeV energy in a dose range from 103 to 107 Gy. The irradiation of LiF induced the formation of stable F2 and F3+ color centers (CCs), which emit with broad photoluminescence (PL) bands under optical pumping at wavelengths close to 450 nm. By acquiring the PL image of the irradiated spots with a conventional fluorescence microscope, the transversal proton beam intensity was mapped with a high spatial resolution. The integrated PL intensity was also measured as a function of the irradiation dose: LiF films showed a linear PL response extending over three orders of magnitude of dose range, independently on the beam energy. It was also possible to measure the CCs PL distribution with proton penetration depth and direct imaging the Bragg peak, which gives an estimation of the proton beam energy. The sensitivity of the optical reading techniques and the high emission efficiency of CCs provided encouraging results to use photoluminescent color-center LiF-based radiation detectors for proton beam dosimetry and imaging applications.

An experimental test campaign has been carried out in order to investigate the performances in terms of pure hydrogen production of a multi-membrane module coupled with a methane reforming fixed bed reactor. The effect of operating parameters such as the temperature, the pressure, the water/methane feed flow rates and the feed molar ratio has been studied. The hydrogen produced into the traditional reformer has been recovered in the shell side of the membrane module by vacuum pumping. The membrane module consists of 19 Pd/Ag permeator tubes of wall thickness 150 μm, diameter 10 mm and length 250 mm: these dense permeators permitted to separate ultra-pure hydrogen. The experiments have been carried out with the reaction pressure of 100–490 kPa, the temperature of the reformer of 570–720 °C and the temperature of the Pd/Ag membranes module of 300–400 °C. A water/methane stream of molar ratio of 4/1 and 5/1 has been fed into the methane reformer at GSHV of 1547.6 and 1796.1 L(STP) kg−1 h−1. Hydrogen yield value of about 3 has been measured at reaction pressure of 350 kPa, temperature reformer of 720 °C and methane feed flow rate of 6.445 × 10−4 mol s−1.

We report the first experiment aimed at the demonstration of low-energy protons acceleration by a high-efficiency S-band RF linear accelerator. The proton beam has been accelerated from 7 to 11.6 MeV by a 1 meter long SCDTL (Side Coupled Drift Tube Linac) module powered with 1.3 MW. The experiment has been done in the framework of the Italian TOP-IMPLART (Oncological Therapy with Protons-Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy Linear Accelerator for Radio-Therapy) project devoted to the realization of a proton therapy centre based on a proton linear accelerator for intensity modulated cancer treatments to be installed at IRE-IFO, the largest oncological hospital in Rome. It is the first proton therapy facility employing a full linear accelerator scheme based on high-frequency technology. © CopyrightEPLA, 2015.

The relevant role of hydrogen in the new and clean energy systems motivates the interest in membrane technologies able to separate and purify such element. Dense Pd-based membranes are particularly attractive for the high values of hydrogen selectivity and good permeance provided. An established approach to model the mass transfer of hydrogen through dense metal membranes describes permeation flux as proportional to the difference of the square root of the hydrogen partial pressure in the feed and permeated side divided by the inverse of the membrane thickness. However, deviations from this law are reported in literature especially when large range of pressure and membrane thickness are considered.This work presents the results of an experimental activity carried out on three dense, defect-free, self-supported Pd-Ag membranes having a thickness of 84, 150 and 200μm, respectively. During testing, the measurements of the hydrogen flux permeated through the membranes were collected in the pressure and temperature ranges of 200-800. kPa and 473-623. K, respectively. The observed permeability pre-exponential factors and activation energies exhibited a dependence on the pressure and the membrane thickness, in agreement with the square root formula mentioned above.This dependence has been discussed by investigating the impact of two effects on the considered process: the relationship between the hydrogen diffusivity from the H/Pd ratio and the surface reactions. The analysis reported in this work shows that Sieverts' law does not account for these two effects. In fact, when applying Sieverts law at the experimental data, a specific pattern is observed in the activation energy (Ea) of the hydrogen permeability. This fact is in contrast with the definition of permeability which is an intrinsic property of the material. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Combined methane and ethanol steam reforming has been carried out in a conventional reformer filled with a Pt (0.5% wt.) catalyst bed. The reformer has been coupled with a multi-membrane module, where pure hydrogen has been recovered in the shell side by vacuum pumping. The experiments-that mainly aimed at measuring the hydrogen yield-have been carried out in the reaction (lumen) pressure range of 100-500 kPa, while the temperature of the reformer and the Pd/Ag membranes module has been of 760°C and 350°C, respectively. The water/ethanol/methane molar ratio has varied in the different experiments (10/1/0, 11/1/0.25, 14/1/1 and 26/1/4). Such water/ethanol mixtures have been investigated in order to simulate the treatment of dilute bioethanol with methane. The hydrogen yield decreases when the molar ratio methane/ethanol increases while-in presence of a high water excess (feed molar ratio water/ethanol/methane of 26/1/4)- A hydrogen yield up to 35% at 500 kPa can be achieved.
