R.A73 Enterococcus faecium (HG937697) was tested for investigating anti-nodaviral activity and immunomodulatory properties on E-11 fish cells. Non R.A73-related toxicity was confirmed. Likewise, in-vitro inhibition of nodavirus replication and gene expression of nodavirus capsid protein gene in addition to CCR3, IL-10 and TNFα genes were evaluated using qPCR. A preventive treatment of E-11 cells by the bacterial suspension generated a remarkable reduction in virus loads (RQ values from 0.1 to 0.9) at day 7. Interestingly, R.A73 E. faecium showed a significant gene expression upregulation of proinflammatory IL-10 cytokine whereas it did not significantly enhance CCR3 nor TNF-α immune gene expression in E-11 cells. Therefore, add-on its probiotic potential, R.A73 E. faecium is able to stimulate the immune system in the preventive phase throughout the differential expression of main inflammatory genes. This study provides the first evidence that R.A73 E. faecium strain can prevents effectively nodavirus replication, in vitro.

In January 2021 during a scientific survey to assess the economic impacts of a Mass Mortality Event, a single individual of the Gracile lizardfish Saurida gracilis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) was caught out of Korbous (Northern Tunisia). This observation, confirmed by genetic analysis, provides evidence on the occurrence of a new non-indigenous species in Mediterranean waters. The relevance of this finding for the current monitoring strategies implemented at the regional level are briefly raised and discussed.

The novel cobalt(II) complex, trans -dipyridinebis(3-acetyl-2-oxo-2 H -chromen-4-olato)cobalt(II), was synthesized in ethanol. The coordination sphere of the cobalt cation was elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, UV-Visible and fluorescence). Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that hydrogen bond interactions, such as C–H···O hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of lactone group and the pyridine appear as a primary interaction between the complex’s molecules. The presence of π-π stacking was evident by the shape index and curvature. Analysis of 2D fingerprint plots confirm that intermolecular H···H, C···H and H···O interactions are well dominated and are in complement to the Hirshfeld surface. The metal-ligand coordination strongly influences the fluorescence intensity (the fluorescence quenching) and the offset of the emission wavelength. The metal complex was monitored for antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method and showed significant activity compared to the coumarin ligand.

Dams represent large semi-closed reservoirs of pesticides and various organic and inorganic pollutants from agricultural and human activities, and their monitoring should receive special attention. This study evaluated the environmental health status of Bir Mcherga dam using zooplankton species. The dam has a capacity of 130 Mm3 and its waters are used for irrigation, water drinking supply, and fishery. Copepods and cladocerans (crustaceans) were collected in situ monthly between October and August 2012. Oxidative stress (CAT, MDA), neurotoxicity (AChE), and genotoxicity (micronucleus test) biomarkers were analyzed in two zooplankton species: Acanthocyclops robustus and Diaphanosoma mongolianum. High values of cells with a micronucleus were observed during summer. AChE activities were inhibited during early winter and summer. The high seasonal variability of CAT and MDA levels indicates that zooplankton is continuously exposed to different oxidative stresses. These results suggest that there is an obvious and continuous multi-faceted stress in Bir Mcherga reservoir and, consequently, an urgent monitoring of freshwater environments in Tunisia is needed, particularly those intended for human consumption and irrigation.

Red seaweeds are a rich source of compounds with various bioactive properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifouling, antiproliferative, and anticancer activities. In this study, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of twelve red macroalgae collected from the Tunisian coast were examined. Estimated total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents in methanolic extracts were found to vary among species. Gracilaria gracilis presented the highest concentration of total phenolic compounds (19.2 ± 1.88 mg GAE/g dried biomass), Laurencia obtusa showed the highest tannin content (18.95 ± 0.84 mg ECat/g DB), and Sphaerococcus cornopifolius showed the highest flavonoid content (7.17 ± 0 mg ECat/g DB). Six species showed significant DPPH radical scavenging activities and total antioxidant capacities: Asparagopsis armata, Gracilaria gracilis, Hypnea musciformis, Laurencia obtusa, Pterocladiella capillacea, and Sphaerococcus cornopifolius. Antimicrobial activity was observed for five species. This study therefore highlights the potential use of red seaweed species collected from the Tunisian coast as sources of bioactive compounds.

Several bioactive properties have been described for this group such as antimicrobial activity, antioxidant and antiproliferative activity, antifouling activity and anticancer activity. Microbial communities in marine deep-sea sediments represent highly productive and bioactive living organism potential despite the extremely oligotrophic feature of the Mediterranean Sea. Else, the characterization of natural microbial communities from deep-sea sediments is still important for marine microbial ecological studies in relation with environmental conditions. Background Whole-genome sequencing using high throughput technologies has revolutionized and speeded up the scientific investigation of bacterial genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Lactic acid bacteria (LABs) have been extensively used in fermentation and more recently as probiotics in food products that promote health. Genome sequencing and functional genomics investigations of LABs varieties provide rapid and important information about their diversity and their evolution, revealing a significant molecular basis. This study investigated the whole genome sequences of the Enterococcus faecium strain (HG937697), isolated from the mucus of freshwater fish in Tunisian dams. Genomic DNA was extracted using the Quick-GDNA kit and sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq2500 system. Sequences quality assessment was performed using FastQC software. The complete genome annotation was carried out with the Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology (RAST) web server then NCBI PGAAP. Results The Enterococcus faecium R.A73 assembled in 28 contigs consisting of 2,935,283 bps. The genome annotation revealed 2884 genes in total including 2834 coding sequences and 50 RNAs containing 3 rRNAs (one rRNA 16 s, one rRNA 23 s and one rRNA 5 s) and 47 tRNAs. Twenty-two genes implicated in bacteriocin production are identified within the Enterococcus faecium R.A73 strain. Conclusion Data obtained provide insights to further investigate the effective strategy for testing this Enterococcus faecium R.A73 strain in the industrial manufacturing process. Studying their metabolism with bioinformatics tools represents the future challenge and contribution to improving the utilization of the multi-purpose bacteria in food.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are traditionally used in food and feed bio-industries as they have health-promoting probiotic effect for their host and currently considered safe for human and animal consumption. Recently, we isolated 177 strains from freshwater fishes of dams of Tunisia exhibiting antimicrobial activities against various food-borne pathogens and generated a laboratory biobank to be characterized. Herein, we investigated whether MALDI-TOF could assist rapid identification of LAB genus. First, a lactic microflora-selective Man Rogosa Sharpe medium was used. Isolates were further screened according to the antimicrobial activity, using well-difusion agar. In total, four major genera have been well identified and species frequency has been estimated (74% Enterococcus, 24% Leuconostoc, 3% Lactococcus, and 2% Vagococcus). Eighteen isolates was further analyzed using MALDI-TOF. Comparative analysis of spectral fingerprints to six referenced MALDI-TOF fingerprints was carried out from the recently developed USC library ( www.spectrabank.org ). The intra- and inter-specific phyloproteomic relationships among strains were compared to available phylogenetic data based on 16S rDNA genes. This study showed that MALDI-TOF MS is a potent and reliable rapid method for both discrimination and identification of LABs. This highlights the insight of proteomic approach into the screening of food-derived beneficial microorganisms.

Two species, Spirobolivina papillosa n. sp. and Spirobolivina retorta n. sp., are described from the Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia), a Mediterranean transitional ecosystem. Two additional species, S. curta (Cushman, 1933) and S. minuta McCulloch, 1977, are also recorded from this lagoon. The identification and documentation of the new species are followed by a comparison with all the species belonging to the genus Spirobolivina and with selected species assigned to the genera Bolivinopsis and Spiroplectoides. Spirobolivina spp. are uncommon in Mediterranean modern environments and their ecology and paleoecology are poorly understood.

Two novel aminocoumarins 3-(1-(2 aminophenylamino) ethylidene)chromene-2,4‑dione, noted (1) and 3-(1-(2–1-(2, 4-dioxochromene-3-ylidene) ethylamino)phenylamino) ethylidene) chromene -2,4‑dione,noted (2), were synthesized from 3-acetyl-4-hydroxycoumarin and ortho-phenylenediamine in absolute ethanol and characterized by spectroscopies methods (FT-IR, UV–vis and fluorescence). The crystal structures of the mentioned compounds were solved from single-crystal diffraction data at low temperature. The compound (1) crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group Iba2 while (2) is monoclinic with space group P21/c. Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates the presence of the π-π stacking in the aminocoumarin structures with the contribution of 7.8% for (1) and 8.7% for (2) of the total Hirshfeld area. The optimized DFT geometries (B3PW91/6–311 G (2df, p)) and the spectral simulations agree well with the experimental data. Theoretical reactivity behavior was assessed, taking into account HOMO-LUMO diagrams and Molecular Electrostatic Potential maps. The two aminocoumarins derivatives have fluorescence properties. Analysis of the photoluminescence spectra shows that the emission intensity is high for the solutions of the two compounds in polar aprotic solvents (DMSO, DMF). The aminocoumarins were monitored for antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method. The coumarin (1) is effective against S. aureus (gram-positive bacteria) and S. typhy (gram-negative bacteria), but the coumarin (2) showed markedly weak antibacterial activity.

International audience; This study analyzes the benthic trophic state of Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) based on the total organic matter and the bioavailability of biopolymeric carbon including proteins (PTN), carbohydrates (CHO), lipids (LIP), chlorophyll a, as well as bacteria counts. The overall simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), and acid volatile sulfides (AVS) as well as the SEM/AVS ratio indicative of the toxicity of the sediments also were analyzed aiming to study their impact in the dimension, composition and structure of both dead and living benthic foraminiferal assemblages.In the studied sites TOC content is relatively high and the PTN/CHO values indicate that they can be considered as meso-eutrophic environments. The CHO/TOC and C/N values suggest that the OM which accumulated on the sediments surface has mainly natural origin despite the introduction of municipal and industrial effluents in the lagoon and the large bacterial pool.The living assemblages of benthic foraminifera of Bizerte Lagoon are quite different to other Mediterranean transitional systems studied until now. They are composed of typical lagoonal species but also include several marine and opportunistic species including significant numbers of bolivinids, buliminids, Nonionella/Nonionoides spp. and Cassidulina/Globocassidulina spp. These assemblages seem to benefitfrom the physicochemical parameters and the sediment stability. They may however face environmental stress in the lagoon related to the AVS production as a result of the organic matter degradation and toxicity in some areas due to the available concentrations of metals. Nonetheless statistical results evidence that the structure and dimension of assemblages are being controlled mostly by OM quantity and quality related mainly to the availability of PTN, CHO and chlorophyll a. Results of this work support the importance of considering OM quantity and quality in studies of environmental impact in coastal systems.

Crude organic extracts were prepared using dichloromethane and dichloromethane/methanol and tested against 19 indicator microorganisms using the disk diffusion method and microdilution technique to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Silica gel column and thin layer chromatography were used for purification of active compounds. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas chromatography were used for compounds identification. Samples of Ulva rigida collected from the two sites have uniform antimicrobial activity throughout the year. Algae collected from the lagoon showed the largest spectrum of activity and were used for subsequent analysis. Bioguided purification of extracts from Ulva rigida, collected at GEM, leads to 16 active fractions with antibacterial effect mainly against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. These fractions were identified as fatty acids, mainly oleic (C18: 1 w9), linoleic (C18: 2 w6), palmitic (C16: 0), and stearic (C14: 0). MICs values ranged from 10 to 250 μg/ml.

Proliferations of cyanobacteria are becoming increasingly widespread in many artificial reservoirs, and may have detrimental effects on ecosystem functioning, especially when the water sustains commercial fisheries. This is the case of the Bir M'Cherga reservoir in North Tunisia, where sporadic fish die-offs have been recently reported. A two-year survey investigated a dual-community structure including both phytoplankton and the main fecal bacterial indicators facing to environmental factors. Low abundances of fecal indicator bacteria were recorded, indicating that no direct human contamination had occurred. However, the ecological status of this reservoir did show signs of degradation, Bacillariophyceae being superseded by Cyanobacteria, with a “nearlyexclusive” dominance of Planktothrix agardhii lasting several months, in association with Planktolyngbya limnetica and Pseudanabaena limnetica. International audience; Metal concentrations in sediments were investigated in the Gulf of Tunis, Tunisia, in relation to anthropic activities along the Mejerda River and Ghar El Melh Lagoon, with effluents discharged into the gulf. Distribution of grain size showed that the silty fraction is dominant with 53%, while sand and clay averages are 34 and 12% respectively. Zn concentration increased in the vicinity of the Mejerda River while Pb was at its highest levels at the outlet of Ghar El Mehl Lagoon. Sediment elutriate toxicity, as measured by oyster embryo bioassays, ranged from 10 to 45% abnormalities after 24 h, but no relation was found between metal concentration and sediment toxicity. The AVS fraction that represents monosulfide concentrations in the sediment was higher in the central part of the gulf than in the coastal zone. The results reveal the influence of AVS, TOC and grain size on metal speciation andsediment toxicity

Proliferations of cyanobacteria have detrimental effects on ecosystem functioning, and on the global freshwater food chain. Many studies have focused on the "in situ" dynamics of bloom-forming cyanobacteria, including Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Planktothrix agardhii. Few have used experi- mental assays to explore the fast-growing ability of naturally co-occurring species. Here we investigated the growth of these species when exposed separately (i.e., in monocultures) to a range of light and nutrient con- ditions, plus their interactive performances in mixed cultures in a short-time experiment (6 days). The use of microplates made it possible to carry out multiple measurements of in-vivo fluorescence (IVF), and to monitor species-dependent biovolumes. No allelopathic effect was significantly observed for any target species, while significantly lower growth rates were obtained in mixed cultures, which may reflect other interference inter- actions between the species. We showed that Planktothrix grew faster with low light intensity and high nu- trient concentrations, and was drastically inhibited by nitrogen deprivation, in contrast to Cylindrospermopsis. However, Cylindrospermopsis outgrew Planktothrix at high NH4 concentrations, suggesting that this species may be a serious competitor for the native species in many water systems.

International audience; The Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) functions as a sedimentation environment characterized by receiving allochthonous sediments mainly transported by the Ben Hassine, Rharek and Guenich streams, as well as marine sediments from the Mediterranean Sea. It is subjected to significantenvironmental changes due to the natural and anthropic influences altering the natural patterns of circulation, extraction and/or deposition of mineralogical materials. The aim of this investigation is to analyze the sediments supply and early diagenetic processes in Bizerte Lagoon. Thephyicochemical parameter of the sediment pore water, as well as their texture, mineralogical composition (X-Ray diffraction technique - XRD), magnetic susceptibility and their geochemical composition (namely lithogenic and evidence a coarser particles contribution of the Ben Hassinestream to the lagoon. The other streams seem to introduce mostly fine grained sediments in the lagoon. The currents circulation, the water residence time and the biological productivity influence the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the bottom sediments. The industrialactivity is also an important factor, since it results in the accumulation of high levels of some metals, such as Fe. Metals are mostly retained in the sediment in areas with active biogeochemical activity due to high organic matter accumulation. Mineralogical and geochemical patterns biogenic chemical elements analyzed by ICP-MS) were analyzed in 10 sampling stations. The water temperature with an average of 15.2°C was stablein the study area. The sediments were generally characterized by fine granulometry, mainly mud and sandy mud, poorly to very poorly sorted, and constituted by two or more granulometric particle modes. The mineralogical results revealed the presence of phyllosilicates, quartz, pyrite, calcite, anatase and K-feldspar, and other minerals in smaller proportions. The fine sediment and high phyllosilicates and Al contents indicate the presence of weak currents in most part of the studied area. The results of sorting, skewness and kurtosis suggest that the currents are more active in the northern region of the lagoon, near the channel of communication with the Mediterranean Sea. They also indicate contributions from different rocks sources, diverse processes of transport and deposition of sediments and varied processes of production of autochthonous materials

International audience; Bizerte Lagoon is a southern Mediterranean semi-enclosed lagoon with a maximum depth of 12 m. After assessing sediment quality, the authors report on the physicochemical characteristics of the lagoon’s surface sediment using SEM (simultaneously extracted metals) and AVS (acid volatile sulfides) as proxies. Biogeochemical tools are used to investigate the environmental disturbance at the water–sediment interface by means of SEM and AVS to seek conclusions concerning the study area’s pollution status. Results confirm accumulation of trace elements in sediment. The use of the SEM-AVS model with organic matter in sediment (ƒOC) confirms possible bioavailability of accumulated trace elements, especially Zn, in the southern part of the lagoon, with organic matter playing an important role in SEM excess correction to affirm a nontoxic total metal sediment state. Individual trace element toxicity is dependent on the bioavailable fraction of SEM Metal on sediment, as is the influence of lagoon inflowfrom southern water sources on element bioavailability. Appropriate management strategies are highly recommended to mitigate any potential harmful effects on health from this heavy-metal-based pollution.

Macroalgae belonging to the genus Padina are known to produce antibacterial compounds that may inhibit growth of human- and animal pathogens. Hitherto, it was unclear whether this antibacterial activity is produced by the macroalga itself or by secondary metabolite producing epiphytic bacteria. Here we report antibacterial activities of epiphytic bacteria isolated from Padina pavonica (Peacocks tail) located on northern coast of Tunisia. Eighteen isolates were obtained in pure culture and tested for antimicrobial activities. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences the isolates were closely related to Proteobacteria (12 isolates; 2 Alpha- and 10 Gammaproteobacteria), Firmicutes (4 isolates) and Actinobacteria (2 isolates). The antimicrobial activity was assessed as inhibition of growth of 12 species of pathogenic bacteria (Aeromonas salmonicida, A. hydrophila, Enterobacter xiangfangensis, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus sp., Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sp., Vibrio alginoliticus, V. proteolyticus, V. vulnificus) and one pathogenic yeast (Candida albicans). Among the Firmicutes, isolate P8, which is closely related to Bacillus pumilus, displayed the largest spectrum of growth inhibition of the pathogenic bacteria tested. The results emphasize the potential use of P. pavonica associated antagonistic bacteria as producers of novel antibacterial compounds.

The main goal of this work is to analyze the elemental composition of the test’s wall of some species/specimens of Textulariids (sub-class Subclass Textulariia), collected in surface sediments of the NW Iberian Margin. The elemental analyses was based on the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM; Hitachi, S4100) of Textularia deltoidea, Textularia agglutinans, Sahulia conica, Karrerotextularia flintii, Siphotextularia heterostoma, Karreriella bradyi, Spiroplectammina sagittula and Arenoparrella mexicana . The elelemetal cocnentrations of the species wall were compared with the mineralogical composition (X-Ray diffraction) of the sediments of the stations where these specimens were collected. The results evidence that whereas the test’s wall of T. deltoidea , T. agglutinans , K. flintii and S. heterostoma are characterized by the highest concentrations of Ca, Mg and Y and lowest Si and Al contents; S. conica, S. sagittula and K. bradyi present intermediate concentrations of the refereed variables but display the highest K content; A. mexicana , contains the highest Si and Al contents and lowest Ca, Mg and Y concentrations. Some species that live in silisiclastic sediments contains high calcium content in their tests (such as T. deltoidea , T. agglutinans whereas some species much common in the deep sea includes high concentrations of lithogenic elements. Results of this work suggests that some Textulariid species can use the test for “storage” and “excretion” of toxic or useless elements that can be used when necessary. These features seems to be functions of biomineralization of the analyzed species and not only the intention of built a protective envelope.

Four isolates of Enterococcus faecium and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were identified at the molecular level by 16S rRNA sequencing and random amplification of polymorphic DNA - polymerase chain reaction, and their antimicrobial activity against a panel of pathogens and food-poisoning bacteria was investigated. The whole bacteriocins of the 4 isolates were characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequences in PCR. The isolates exhibited high inhibitory activities against food-borne pathogens and spoilage microbial species and have significant probiotic profiles, since they survived at pH 3.0 and in the presence of bile salts, pancreatin, and pepsin, without any detectable hemolytic activity. Further, moderate heat resistance, adhesion ability to steel surfaces, and sensitivity to clinically relevant antimicrobial agents were revealed for all the isolates. These results highlight the specific probiotic properties of the strains and give evidence for potential application in minimally processed foods subjected to moderate heat processing.

Carpet shell clam populations on the Tunisian coastline are susceptible to several microbial pathogen challenges. In this study we report the results of five years' surveillance, conducted from January 2004 till June 2009, for detection of Perkinsosis and brown ring disease (BRD). The survey covered three sites of natural populations of Ruditapes decussatus in a Tunisian lagoon, the North Lake of Tunis. Perkinsosis was detected preferentially in winter periods from the external and marine site, BRD was detected more frequently in the summer periods in a more proximal collection site (in the lake) and was positively correlated with concentrations of heterotrophic Vibrio sp. Our results suggest that several factors other than temperature and salinity might explain spatial distribution variability and natural intensities for these infections in carpet shell clam populations.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains were isolated during a monitoring survey of the carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus) collected from 23 stations along the Tunisian coast. The effect of starvation on Salmonella Typhimurium survival was investigated in vitro using microcosms composed of filtered (0.2 µm) marine water under dark and ambient temperature conditions (25C for 30 days). Eventual changes in physiological, biochemical properties, serotyping, biotyping and antimicrobial sensitivity for the environmentally adapted Salmonella Typhimurium were monitored. In response to stress conditions, the Salmonella Typhimurium strains progressively lost culturability in the absence of notable changes in the total cell count (during all the period of 30 days). Strains appeared to enter into a viable but noncultureable state as determined by epifluorescence method. We have also observed that the T90 value (time required for the reduction of 90% of cells) for the five different Salmonella strains ranged between 25 and 30 h; this indicated the survivability of Salmonella under stress conditions. This state was also characterized by biochemical and antimicrobial changes. PRACTICAL APPLICATION This research highlighted the acquisition of the viable but nonculturable state of bacteria. This form of adaptation of certain pathogens does not really reflect their presence or absence in the marine environment and thus in foods of marine origin. Hence the use of conventional methods of bacterial identification must be completed more advanced research tools before declaring a healthy product or environment.

The use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the prevention or reduction of fish diseases is receiving increasing attention. In the present study, 47 LAB strains were isolated from farmed seabass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) and were phenotypically and phylogenetically analysed by 16S rDNA and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA – polymerase chain reaction (RAPD–PCR). Their antimicrobial effect was tested in vitro against a wide variety of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. Most of the strains isolated were enterococci belonging to the following species: Enterococcus faecium (59%), Enterococcus faecalis (21%), Enterococcus sanguinicola (4 strains), Enterococcus mundtii (1 strain), Enterococcus pseudoavium (1 strain), and Lactococcus lactis (1 strain). An Aerococcus viridans strain was also isolated. The survey of their antimicrobial susceptibility showed that all isolates were sensitive to vancomycin and exhibited resistance to between 4 and 10 other antibiotics relevant for therapy in human and animal medicine. Different patterns of resistance were noted for skin and intestines isolates. More than 69% (32 strains) of the isolates inhibited the growth of the majority of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria tested, including Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , Aeromonas hydrophila , Aeromonas salmonicida , Vibrio anguillarum , and Carnobacterium sp. To our knowledge, this is the first report of bioactive enterococcal species isolated from seabass that could potentially inhibit the undesirable bacteria found in food systems.

In this study, we studied the influence of the physical-chemical and biological factors (bacterioplankton and phytoplankton abundances) for zooplankton dynamics in a Sidi Saâd reservoir in Centre of Tunisia. The samplings were carried out in spring, summer, autumn and winter (2005 to 2006) in the deepest station (surface, 5, 10 and 15 m). In this reservoir, the highest density of zooplankton abundance was recorded in summer (92.2 ind L -1 ; 0.43 × 10 3 μg L -1 ) and autumn (86.9 ind L -1 ; 0.23 × 10 3 μg L -1 ) at a depth of 10 m. The copepods (56% of total zooplankton abundance) and cladocera (42% of total zooplankton abundance) were the most abundant groups. The physico-chemical factors, especially the water temperature (r = 0.53, p = 0.027, n = 16) and dissolved oxygen (r = -0.59, p = 0.03, n = 16), influence directly the zooplankton community. It was suggested that in Sidi Saâd reservoir, both the top-down and bottom-up regulations account for the regulation of zooplankton. The phytoplankton was the factor responsible for the structure and seasonal dynamics of the zooplankton community, which are well related to changes in algae diversity and abundance, noting that cyanobacteria have major impacts. The “top-down” effect of planktivorous fish on the zooplankton is a significant factor affecting the plankton community’s dynamics in this reservoir. International audience; The occurrence and spread of brown ring disease (BRD) to several northern Mediterranean coasts is described. We report the results of a 6-y surveillance of BRD in natural populations of carpet shell clams (Ruditapes decussatus) in 14 zones along the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia (southern Mediterranean Sea). BRD symptoms in adult animals resulting from conchiolin deposits in inner parts of carpet shell were observed in all zones surveyed. Infestation rates within each site ranged from 65-100%, and BRD prevalence varied from 1-58% of clams in winter and from 1-33% in summer. Positive correlations were demonstrated between BRD prevalence and Vibrio spp. concentrations in clams. Vibrio tapetis was not identified among the bacterial organisms, suggesting that other marine Vibrio species are capable of causing BRD-like illness in carpet shell clams.

Five biomarkers, catalase (CAT) activity, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, the neural transmitter enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured in specimens of Fulvia fragilis collected from Bizerta lagoon (Tunisia). Results demonstrated that F. fragilis showed differential biomarker response according to the importance of the anthropogenic pressure and the nature of pollutants that affect the lagoon. A clear organotropism was also observed with a higher biomarker response in digestive gland than in gills of this bivalve. These results indicate that F. fragilis constitutes a useful tool as sentinel organism for biomonitoring of aquatic pollution.

In order to test the ability to produce antibacterial substances within marine bacteria, prior to select potential probiotics for use in shellfish farming, we targeted a large collection of bacterial isolates (132 strains), brought from the clamRuditapes decussatus and 37 reference strains. First, we proceeded to their biochemical identification and the screening of antibiotic resistance profiles. Else, we investigated their inhibitory activityin vitro against several fish and shellfish pathogens, using two methods: the double-layer agar and the direct simultaneous antagonism methods. The results showed high frequencies of inhibitory producing bacteria (IPB) within the isolates. These bacteria (25%) were aerobic mesophylic bacteria belonging to various bacterial groups: 33.7% oxidase-positive Gram-negative bacteria, 7.4%Enterobacteriaceae and 28% lactic acid bacteria. Besides this group, nine strains produced strong inhibition effect. These bacteria belonged to:Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas sobria, Pseudomonas cepacia, Vibrio sp,Serratia liquefaciens andLactobacillus rhamnosus. They were active against pathogenic bacteria belonging to the genera:Aeromonas, Pseudomonas andVibrio. These potential probiotics were submitted to further investigations prior to their introduction in larval shellfish farming.

International audience; The authors investigated sediment quality in Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) focusing on geochemical characteristics, metal sediment fractionation and elutriate toxicity assessment. Nickel, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd partitioning in sediments was studied; accumulation and bioavailability were elucidated using enrichment factors, sequential extractions, redox potential, acid volatile sulfide and biotest procedures in toxicity evaluation. Results revealed an accumulation for Pb and Zn, reaching 99 and 460 mg kg−1 respectively. In addition, the acid volatile sulfide values were high in both eastern and western lagoon areas, thus affecting metal availability. Mean enrichment factor values for Pb and Zn were 4.8 and 4.9, respectively, with these elements as the main contributors to the lagoon's moderate enrichment level. Toxicity levels were influenced by accumulation of Zn in different surface sediment areas. Core sediments were investigated in areas with the highest metal concentrations; metal fractionation and biotest confirmed that Zn contributes to sediment toxicity.

This study investigated the environmental quality of the Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) through an integrated approach that combined environmental, biogeochemical, and living benthic foraminiferal analyses. Specifically, we analyzed the physicochemical parameters of the water and sediment. The textural, mineralogical, and geochemical characteristics of the sediment, including total organic carbon, total nitrogen, simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), acid volatile sulfides (AVS), chlorophyll a, CaCO3, and changes in bacterial populations and carbon isotopes were measured. The SEM/AVS values indicated the presence of relatively high concentrations of toxic metals in only some areas. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. International audience; Mussel farming is the main economic activity in Bizerte Lagoon, with a production that fluctuates depending on environmental factors. In the present study, we apply a bioenergetic growth model to the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, based on dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory which describes energy flux variation through the different compartments of the mussel body. Thus, the present model simulates both mussel growth and sexual cycle steps according to food availability and water temperature and also the effect of climate change on mussel behavior and reproduction. The results point to good concordance between simulations and growth parameters (metric length and weight) for mussels in the lagoon. A heat wave scenario was also simulated using the DEB model, which highlighted mussel mortality periods during a period of high temperature.

Ria de Aveiro, which is located in the centre of Portugal (40° 38' N, 8° 45' W), is a well-mixed and complex coastal lagoon that is separated from the sea by a sandy barrier and connects with the Atlantic through an artificial inlet. Tidal currents are the main factor controlling the lagoon's hydrodynamics and, to a great extent, the sedimentary dynamic. The inner lagoonal zones receive input from several rivers and experience the pressure caused by the accumulation of organic matter and pollutants (namely, trace metals) from diverse anthropic activities. This paper is the first piece of work aiming to recognize, characterize and explain the main benthic foraminiferal biotopes in Ria de Aveiro. To provide a broad overview of this kind of setting, our results are compared to those of previous published studies conducted in similar transitional environments. The research is based on an investigation of 225 sites spread throughout this ecosystem. Utilizing a statistical approach, this study analyses the details of dead benthic foraminiferal assemblages composed of 260 taxa, the texture and composition (mineralogical and geochemical) of the sediment and physicochemical data. On the basis of the results of R-mode and Q-mode cluster analyses, several different biotopes can be defined as marsh biotope/near-marsh biotope; marginal urban/marginal urban mixing biotope; inner-outer lagoon biotope or enclosed lagoon; outer lagoon biotope, mixed sub-biotope; and outer lagoon, marine sub-biotope. These biotopes are related to foraminifera assemblages and substrate type and are influenced by local currents, water depth, chemical and physicochemical conditions, river or oceanic proximity, and anthropogenic impact, as evidenced by the mapping of the six factor loadings of the principal component analysis conducted herein. Based on a similar methodology of analysis as that applied in previous studies in the Lagoon of Venice, comparable biotypes were identified in Lagoon of Aveiro.
