The relevance of the research is due to the change in the monetary policy regime of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), which consists in the transition from inflation targeting with a floating exchange rate to a fixed exchange rate as the nominal anchor of monetary policy under martial law. Such a plan to change the monetary policy regime was carefully calculated and outlined in the NBU's Monetary Policy Guidelines for the Duration of Martial Law. The timeliness and effectiveness of the NBU's monetary policy decisions enabled it to mitigate the impact of the military shock on the macro-financial stability of the national economy. The purpose of the article is to consider the theoretical and practical aspects of the NBU's monetary policy under martial law. Methodology. The study uses a systematic method of cognition to determine the sequence of application of monetary policy instruments to smooth out monetary shocks of the wartime period; an abstract-logical method to understand the future monetary policy strategy based on the abandonment of the fixed exchange rate regime and a gradual return to inflation targeting; and a statistical method to analyse the dynamics of monetary indicators of the national economy. Results. The paper presents the main principles of the NBU's monetary policy under martial law. The first shock from the war led to changes in the conduct of monetary policy and a shift to unconventional instruments of its regulation. The gradual adaptation of the economy to the new conditions determined the NBU's further steps to ease monetary policy and move to greater exchange rate flexibility. Practical implications. The practical significance of the research results is to assess the conditions for the transition from the key policy rate-based inflation targeting regime as the main monetary policy instrument to the use of foreign exchange interventions as the main operation in the foreign exchange market under martial law. Value / Originality. The originality of the article is due to the need to identify the prerequisites for the transition to a new monetary policy strategy in a wartime economy. Conclusions. The NBU's timely response to the negative phenomena associated with deteriorating inflation expectations, multiple exchange rates and pressure on international reserves helped prevent the development of a currency and financial crisis in Ukraine. Despite the active hostilities, the NBU is trying to find options that will allow it to conduct an effective monetary policy in the face of a full-scale invasion and unprecedented internal and external shocks. Internationally, Ukraine has exceeded expectations and the NBU has shown a high degree of responsibility, professionalism and creativity in the conduct of monetary policy. Increased confidence in the central bank is a valuable resource in times of martial law.

This article explores the politics of 'freelance feminism' by drawing on 30 qualitative in-depth interviews with digital feminist activists. By documenting and analysing the different ways in which digital feminist activism can be monetised, the article shows that the potential to generate income is frequently discussed by, and contemplated among, activists. As this article argues, the monetisation of digital feminist activism goes beyond the application of market principles to political protest movements. When activism is monetised, activists' emotional investments and passion become mobilised and tied to income generation. At the same time, and through emphases on self-branding and 'authenticity', activists' selves are formed and rearranged in line with neoliberal values of entrepreneurialism and market competition. This article therefore shows that the workings of neoliberalism in digital feminist activism play out on an economic level, and also on the levels of affect and subjectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The food industry should evolve towards new business models which take into account the damage cost in decision making, considering the impact that its products generate on the natural and human environment. Hence, the present study aims to calculate the damage cost caused by the production of whole fresh (as average of potatoes, aubergines, and broccoli), and processed vegetables (fresh-cut and pre-cooked). Methods: The environmental life cycle approach was carried out per kilogram of assessed products (from cradle to the entrance of the market). The foreground Life Cycle Inventory was obtained from engineering procurement and construction projects of the whole fresh and processed vegetables industries. The Ecoinvent 3.8 and Agribalyse 3.0.1 databases were used for the background inventory. The ReCiPe 2016 method was used with a hierarchical perspective, evaluating eighteen midpoint categories as well as the endpoint categories (human health, ecosystems, and resources). The monetisation of these environmental impacts was then calculated using the endpoint monetisation factors developed by Ponsioen et al. (Monetisation of sustainability impacts of food production and consumption. Wageningen Economic Research, Wageningen, 2020) for each product. It should be noted that this study does not include a comparative assessment. This study does not intend to compare the results for the three vegetable groups. Results and discussion: The damage costs were 0.16 €/kg for whole fresh vegetables, 0.37 €/kg for fresh-cut vegetables and 0.41 €/kg for pre-cooked vegetables. The agricultural production stage contributed most to these total damage costs due to the impact produced on land use and global warming in midpoint categories and human health and ecosystems in endpoint categories. In addition, the damage cost due to fossil resource scarcity (midpoint) and resource scarcity (endpoint) was mainly caused by the plastic packaging of fresh-cut and pre-cooked vegetables. The total cost was 1.02 €/kg for whole fresh vegetables, 2.99 €/kg for fresh-cut vegetables, and 3.43 €/kg for pre-cooked vegetables. Conclusions: These results suggest that some efforts should be made to reduce both environmental impacts and damage costs. For instance, to improve agricultural production, special attention should be paid to fertilisation and water consumption. Additionally, new packaging options should be explored as well as the inclusion of renewable sources in the electricity grid, and finally, on transporting the finished products to the market, by using trucks that run on cleaner fuels. This article deals with YouTube's advertiser-friendly content guidelines – the content rules dedicated to defining what YouTube deems advertiser (un)friendly and that YouTube creators seeking to monetise their content through advertising have to follow. Specifically, this study addresses the textual composition of YouTube's regulations with a focus on occurrences of vagueness. Regarding methods of data analysis, I take a corpus-assisted discourse analytical approach to YouTube's texts on advertiser-friendliness. That is, I take a wide-angle view on all concordance lines of 'content' and identify occurrences of different forms of vagueness. Findings suggest that at least 26% of the lines of 'content' detailing YouTube's ad-friendly content guidelines exhibit at least one of eight forms of vagueness. Consequently, content creators – left unsure about the monetisability of particular content – may choose not to push any boundaries but to produce noncontroversial content, which, in turn, may impede content plurality on YouTube. In 1882, the lavishly decorated golden regalia of a steppe nomad warrior prince, which was crafted in the late sixth century BCE in a "bilingual" Scythian–Milesian workshop on the Black Sea coast, was found on the edge of a Lusatian swamp 120 km southeast of Berlin. Its discovery and the ongoing findings of steppe nomad armaments—arrows, battle axes, and swords—in central Europe have led to a lively debate about the nature of Scythian–Indigenous interaction in the Early Iron Age, ranging from benign visions of long-term acculturation to violent scenarios of short-term raiding. In this article, I argue that an analysis of the iconography of the Witaszkowo hoard and new information from excavations at its find spot make it likely that it was sent as a diplomatic gift by Scythian elites to an indigenous leader and deposited by the local community as a votive hoard. An affirmation of the compact chronological range of Scythian artefacts found in the west, growing evidence for the destruction of indigenous strongholds by horse-borne archers, and concurrent evidence for the drastic depopulation of vast landscapes in the second half of the sixth century BCE allow us to envisage the gifting of this hoard as an episode of a fierce and destructive altercation. It is posited that this onslaught was a facet of the western thrust of the Lydian and Persian Empires, and that its extirpative impact was the result of systematic, commercially driven slaving triggered by the concurrent monetisation of the economies of the Black Sea coast. The effects of these raids on Eastern Central Europe's later prehistoric communities are made manifest by analogies to the disastrous ramifications of the transatlantic slave trade on societies of 16th-to-18th-century West Africa. The paper analyses in depth and highlights not only the peculiarities of managing gaming communities in Minecraft, but also their strategies in the face of constant competition. The authors describe in detail the methods used by these communities to achieve their goals in the virtual environment, taking into account the needs and differences of this type of collective structures. Special focus is directed towards examining how new members interact and the impact they have on the management dynamics within the clan. Highlighting the benefits that a player receives when joining a clan is an important part of the analysis, which opens up new approaches to understanding the motivation of players in choosing certain gaming groups. Not only the effectiveness of player management is investigated, but also the ways in which server administrators facilitate this interaction and generate revenue. The authors reveal specific examples of gaming features that server owners use for commercial purposes, as well as consider strategies for forming clans and their potential sizes. The approach to defining the roles of players in gaming communities is considered to be innovative, enriching the understanding of their functions and contributing to deepening the analysis in this area. This work is currently relevant in the context of the expansion of gaming culture, as it brings to the fore key aspects of gaming communities and can serve as a valuable source of information for players, game team leaders, server administrators, and researchers studying this unique field.

This essay explores the function of corporate buzzwords by investigating the early histories of “business model” and “monetisation”. It analyses the terms as examples of managerial argot, and argues that at key moments in the formation of digital capitalism, the terms helped create a field of action where management communities could envision, discuss, and coordinate, in a safely depoliticised way, the fact that markets and property are not natural, that social and political choices are necessary to create markets and property out of human relations that are not self-evidently things. Analysing the terms, not as ideologies, but as what Raymond Williams called “social experiences in solution”, the essay focuses on the terms’ emergence before the regimes of accumulation with which they are now associated. This analysis suggests that close attention to language in historical context can help illuminate the emergence of political economic changes, showing that the rise of digital capitalism can be seen as, at the outset, as an effect, as much as a cause, of particular structures of feeling. It also suggests that scholars of current trends should not take for granted current buzzwords, but should treat their use and definition as sites of struggle.

This article explores the alternative system of contractual regulation that permits monetised user-generated content (UGC) in the video game industry. By situating the user in an industry where it is possible to earn millions from ‘playing games’, this article challenges the assumption in copyright doctrine that the user is a non-professional amateur, whose motivation for creating UGC is altruistic. The fundamental question in this article is about copyright incentives: who should reap the rewards for the creation of UGC? To answer this, the article examines the UGC policies of 30 popular game titles, revealing the distinct, but nuanced, concept of monetisation. The article illustrates how monetisation is constructed as a limited, merit-based allowance that both encourages and constrains the possibility of a user-led industry.

Recent papers assume that whereas the value of 'traditional' communications networks follows Metcalfe's law – that is, grows with the square of the number of users – the value of group-forming network platforms should increase faster. The papers see evidence in the fact that the advertising revenues of platforms such as Facebook and Tencent follow a cube law or stronger. We argue that such tests do not make much sense, as they lack a theoretical justification. Growth laws such as Metcalfe's and Reed's were conceived with purely one-sided networks in mind, reason in terms of utility for users, and have little to say about the monetisation of the value created. The results of the very papers that we discuss show that the laws have no generality. How did the belief in rebirth and karmic retribution come into existence? W. D. Whitney called it 'one of the most difficult questions in the religious history of India', and Richard Salomon described it, a century later, as 'the single greatest problem of Indological studies'. Scholars have proposed textual continuities leading up to texts that give expression to this belief, but questions can be and have been raised about such continuities. Worse, these studies do not deal with the observation made by A. B. Keith almost a century ago, viz., that 'while the ideas thus recorded are of some value ... the importance of transmigration lies precisely in the fact that the doctrine is an ethical system'. The one scholar who fully recognises the importance of ethicisation is Gananath Obeyesekere. Unfortunately, his theory is based on some disputable assumptions, which weaken it, as they weaken Richard Seaford's theory, which builds on Obeyesekere's ideas. This article explores the relationship between monetisation models, game design and ethical considerations from the perspective of three different small-scale Norwegian game companies: an indie company, a freemium company and a premium company. The aim is to explore critically how small-scale game companies reason and act in the current economy. Interviews with game designers and CEOs form the empirical basis of the analysis. The motives and practices of the informants are categorised according to three ethical schools, namely, deontology, virtue ethics, and utilitarianism. The informants believe that freemium models and free games have made the computer game industry markedly more challenging to monetise. Their views on what is considered ethical monetisation varies between companies, most distinctly between the freemium company and the two others. Informants from the freemium company downplay ethical responsibilities, with reference to the huge number of existing free games and costumers unwilling to pay for games. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Online journalism is characterised by specific features that distinguish it from its predecessors. It is not only interactivity, timeliness and new elements that make it unique. The way in which digital media are funded is also interesting. While in print media it is customary to pay directly for a copy of a newspaper, the situation is different in the online space. News content is usually freely accessible and online advertising in the form of banner ads or PR pieces is present. However, funding the medium can be unprofitable in this model, which is why some publishers have chosen to hide their web content behind a paywall. Recipients must thus pay for news directly again – in the form of subscriptions. The aim of the study is to shed light on the issue of online media financing in order to explore different monetisation strategies and their efficiency in the era of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Web monetisation is the conversion of user traffic into revenue. Initially referring to websites, in more recent years, the meaning of the term has been expanded to refer to non-website traffic, such as social media applications, which this glossary entry gives more attention to. Within social media, the concept of content monetisation has developed as a way to denote the various approaches content creators have in creating online revenue out of the content they produce. This glossary entry provides an overview of the concepts of web and content monetisation, discusses aspects arising out of their interaction, and addresses three main issues currently associated with the term: the interoperability of social media infrastructures, the interoperability of content and web monetisation, and the moderation of content monetised decentrally.

The article discusses the valuation of ecosystem services in connection with the economic activity of the Russian Federation in the Arctic zone. It also considers the categories of ecosystem services in general and the assessment of ecosystem services in the Arctic in particular. The article also considers types of negative impacts on the Arctic ecosystems, their assessment, and investment risks existing in ecosystem services. It is shown that the application of the methodology and ecosystem services contributes to the adequate assessment and creation of a hierarchical classification of "usefulness" and "benefits" for society derived from the existence, use, and non-use of ecosystems. The concept of Arctic ecosystem services consists of three components: identification, monetisation, and ecological risk assessment. Identification, classification, and initial assessment, mainly at the qualitative level, allow us to determine and classify services for further improvement of life quality and regulation of socio-economic effects of environmental changes. Quantitative assessment is related to the identification of the degree of ecosystem service amenability. The example of the Arctic ecosystems shows that the possibility to assess and the accuracy of the assessment can be quite different and largely depends on the type of service. The analysis of possible ecosystem services and their relationship with the quality of life in the Russian Arctic indicates significant investment risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research investigates how startup team characteristics correlate with a probability that a leisure-based entrepreneur forms a new profitable firm. We found that leisure-based ventures are more likely to stay longer in the startup process but do not differ from other ventures in the probability of forming a new profitable firm. Leisure-based startups are more likely to form a new firm if owners are solo founders or keep a larger ownership percentage in their hands and are less likely to form a new firm if teams are bigger or more functionally diverse. We conclude that the entrepreneurs who start their ventures from a serious pursuit of a personal hobby may benefit from finding team members who share their hobby, keeping a larger percentage of ownership of their business, or even pursuing solo entrepreneurship. Gamblification, i.e. the use of gambling as a tool to influence consumer decision-making, has most recently been associated with the monetisation of digital games. Yet, despite such implementations receiving the majority of attention, gamblification is not restricted to this context. Indeed, it is becoming increasingly visible across a range of media products and services, with the potential to be used to achieve pro-social as well as commercial aims. Given the varied implementations of gamblification, it is important to develop tools and methods which allow gamblified experiences and interactions to be investigated and analysed; thereby providing a basis for in-depth investigation by relevant stakeholders. This work presents a conceptual framework for identifying and evaluating the components which constitute gamblified experiences. It then applies the framework to an online health and wellbeing service in order to illustrate the application of the framework and the knowledge it generates. In addition to providing a practical tool for identifying and assessing gamblified products and services across a range of contexts, this work also offers theoretical insights into our understanding and interpretation of gamblified experiences. It draws from a wide range of disciplines and sources to deepen understanding of a topic which is growing in both social and economic significance. In addition, the importance of ethical implications in understanding the impact upon both individuals and wider society is underscored. The “material” turn has steadily gained currency in cultural studies and the humanities, with scholars increasingly attentive to theorising things and examining their presence, power, and meaning in any number of fields and disciplines. This essay stems from the keynote lecture given at the conference MatteReality: Historical Trajectories and Conceptual Futures for Material Culture Studies, held on March 23, 2017, at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Freiburg. Focused in particular on the meaning of materiality in American art history and American Studies today, it opens with an examination of the factors of monetisation and mobility and segues to a consideration of more efficacious ways to assess, theorise, and critique the material turn. Two areas that are particularly relevant in terms of rethinking, and mediating, materiality in American art and American Studies are those of technological process and affect: how things are made and how things make us feel.

This review essay aims to present an overview of recent publications on the Tour de France. The death of Raymond Poulidor in November 2019 underlined the impact of the race on French culture and society. The numerous reactions to his death allow us first of all to return to the dominant historiography of the Tour de France interpreting it in the tradition launched by Georges Vigarello. Recent historiography, however, allows us to move away from this classical interpretation by proposing studies focusing on the economic and political aspects of the Tour. The development of the Tour has been determined in the past decades mainly by three phenomena: globalization, professionalization and monetisation by the worldwide media coverage. Following the departure of the Tour 2017 in Düsseldorf, this sporting, cultural and commercial event also seems likely to become a German research object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background We sought to analyse the impacts found, and the methods used, in a series of assessments of programmes and portfolios of health research consisting of multiple projects. Methods We analysed a sample of 36 impact studies of multi-project research programmes, selected from a wider sample of impact studies included in two narrative systematic reviews published in 2007 and 2016. We included impact studies in which the individual projects in a programme had been assessed for wider impact, especially on policy or practice, and where findings had been described in such a way that allowed them to be collated and compared. Results Included programmes were highly diverse in terms of location (11 different countries plus two multi-country ones), number of component projects (8 to 178), nature of the programme, research field, mode of funding, time between completion and impact assessment, methods used to assess impact, and level of impact identified. Thirty-one studies reported on policy impact, 17 on clinician behaviour or informing clinical practice, three on a combined category such as policy and clinician impact, and 12 on wider elements of impact (health gain, patient benefit, improved care or other benefits to the healthcare system). In those multi-programme projects that assessed the respective categories, the percentage of projects that reported some impact was policy 35% (range 5–100%), practice 32% (10–69%), combined category 64% (60–67%), and health gain/health services 27% (6–48%). Variations in levels of impact achieved partly reflected differences in the types of programme, levels of collaboration with users, and methods and timing of impact assessment. Most commonly, principal investigators were surveyed; some studies involved desk research and some interviews with investigators and/or stakeholders. Most studies used a conceptual framework such as the Payback Framework. One study attempted to assess the monetary value of a research programme’s health gain. Conclusion The widespread impact reported for some multi-project programmes, including needs-led and collaborative ones, could potentially be used to promote further research funding. Moves towards greater standardisation of assessment methods could address existing inconsistencies and better inform strategic decisions about research investment; however, unresolved issues about such moves remain.

Background: This article examined the enormous financial burden placed on the Federal Government of Nigeria by the management and maintenance of its civil servants. The cost of governance in Nigeria continues to rise mainly because of the provision of fringe benefits (such as free residential accommodation, medical services, transport facilities and utilities, including telephone service, water and electricity) to public servants. Yet, public employees’ performance continues to decline, which leads to low levels of human and physical infrastructure development. Aim: This article examines the effects of the rising cost of governance in Nigeria and how to enhance employee performance. The article interrogates the effects of the monetisation of fringe benefits policy (the Monetisation Policy) of the Obasanjo Administration (2003–2007). Setting: The study was conducted in the Federal Civil Service Secretariat in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Methods: This article is anchored in social exchange theory. The study participants comprised 1007 federal civil servants selected from 32 federal establishments. The participants were selected using the total population sampling technique. A structured questionnaire with a reliability coefficient estimate of 0.742 was used to generate the data for the study. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) aided the presentation and analysis of data relating to the research objectives using frequency distribution tables and testing research hypotheses with chi-square statistics and Pearson’s product–moment correlation statistic. Results: The findings revealed that the Monetisation Policy has helped to enhance employee payment packages. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between high monetised benefits and high employee performance. The study found that the Monetisation Policy has had positive effects on employee performance in the federal civil service in Imo State. Conclusion: This study concludes that the Monetisation Policy has helped to enhance employee motivation and morale, and to reduce employee work-related stress, which are vital indicators of work efficiency. These factors do not only affect the contextual performance of the civil servants, but also predispose their task performance. The researchers recommend that the Monetisation Policy should be sustained. It is also recommended that the government should introduce other measures aimed at enhancing the motivation of employees who receive lower monetised benefits so as to further improve the overall performance of the Nigerian civil service.

International Islamic religious authorities have commented negatively on the application of baiʿ al-ʿīnah (same-item sale-repurchase) in the Malaysian banking industry. These authorities include the Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Accounting and the Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI). They conclude that the application represents a prohibited ruse to legitimise usury through a sale transaction. This article examines the possible use of classical tawarruq as an alternative to baiʿ al-ʿīnah in the Malaysian banking industry, especially for retail financing. Several modes of classical tawarruq are considered. This research supports the application of classical tawarruq as an effective, viable and marketable Islamic financing arrangement. In this article, we expand on the models available for defining various different business logics relevant to video game development, especially those concerning free-to-play games. We use the models to analyse those business logics from an Aristotelian virtue ethics perspective. We argue that if an individual wishes to follow the Aristotelian virtue ethics code in order to develop the virtues inherent in his or her own character (as in the personal character of the developer, not a character in the game), how he or she chooses to try and generate revenue from the fruits of his or her labour is not irrelevant. Fiscal explanations often given for Rome's first coins fail to account for the shape of monetary development. Nothing in the mid-republican budget matches the small scale and sporadic production of Roman coins during the early third century, or coinage's rapid expansion in the lead-up to the Second Punic War. Instead, I locate early Roman coinage within a broader reconfiguration of wealth and political power during the early phases of imperial expansion. Coins facilitated the exchange of wealth in the absence of strong social ties; conquest opened up Roman society to vast wealth of this order while also sparking debate about wealth's integration into the political community. Archaeological and textual evidence permits us to trace the contested and uneven development of elite accommodation to impersonal wealth during the third century. A specific monetary tax − called periodic re-coinage − was applied for almost 200 years in large parts of medieval Europe. Old coins were frequently declared invalid and exchanged for new ones based on publicly announced dates and exchange fees. A theoretical framework of how periodic re-coinage works in practice is tested on Swedish coinage. The theory suggests that economic backwardness, limited monetisation of society and separate currency areas facilitated re-coinage. The Swedish experience is extraordinarily consistent with this theory. It is shown that Sweden adopted coin types similar to those minted in Continental Europe during the Middle Ages and the corresponding coinage and monetary taxation policies. Periodic re-coinage was applied with varying frequency from 1180 to 1290. However, monetisation increased in the late thirteenth century, making periodic re-coinage more difficult, and long-lived coins were introduced in 1290. With the end of periodic re-coinage, Swedish kings accelerated the debasement of long-lived coins, which continued until the beginning of the sixteenth century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We sought to analyse the impacts found, and the methods used, in a series of assessments of programmes and portfolios of health research consisting of multiple projects.Methods: We analysed a sample of 36 impact studies of multi-project research programmes, selected from a wider sample of impact studies included in two narrative systematic reviews published in 2007 and 2016. We included impact studies in which the individual projects in a programme had been assessed for wider impact, especially on policy or practice, and where findings had been described in such a way that allowed them to be collated and compared.Results: Included programmes were highly diverse in terms of location (11 different countries plus two multi-country ones), number of component projects (8 to 178), nature of the programme, research field, mode of funding, time between completion and impact assessment, methods used to assess impact, and level of impact identified. Thirty-one studies reported on policy impact, 17 on clinician behaviour or informing clinical practice, three on a combined category such as policy and clinician impact, and 12 on wider elements of impact (health gain, patient benefit, improved care or other benefits to the healthcare system). In those multi-programme projects that assessed the respective categories, the percentage of projects that reported some impact was policy 35% (range 5-100%), practice 32% (10-69%), combined category 64% (60-67%), and health gain/health services 27% (6-48%). Variations in levels of impact achieved partly reflected differences in the types of programme, levels of collaboration with users, and methods and timing of impact assessment. Most commonly, principal investigators were surveyed; some studies involved desk research and some interviews with investigators and/or stakeholders. Most studies used a conceptual framework such as the Payback Framework. One study attempted to assess the monetary value of a research programme's health gain.Conclusion: The widespread impact reported for some multi-project programmes, including needs-led and collaborative ones, could potentially be used to promote further research funding. Moves towards greater standardisation of assessment methods could address existing inconsistencies and better inform strategic decisions about research investment; however, unresolved issues about such moves remain.
