1. Field and temperature scaling of the critical current density in commercial REBCO coated conductors

Abstract

Scaling relations describing the electromagnetic behaviour of coated conductors (CCs) greatly simplify the design of REBCO-based devices. The performance of REBCO CCs is strongly influenced by fabrication route, conductor architecture and materials, and these parameters vary from one manufacturer to the others. In the present work we have examined the critical surface for the current density, Jc(T,B,$\theta$), of coated conductors from six different manufacturers: American Superconductor Co. (US), Bruker HTS GmbH (Germany), Fujikura Ltd. (Japan), SuNAM Co. Ltd. (Korea), SuperOx ZAO (Russia) and SuperPower Inc. (US). Electrical transport and magnetic measurements were performed at temperatures between 4.2 K and 77 K and in magnetic field up to 19 T. Experiments were conducted at three different orientations of the field with respect to the crystallographic c-axis of the REBCO layer, $\theta$ = 0$\deg$, 45$\deg$ and 90$\deg$, in order to probe the angular anisotropy of Jc. In spite of the large variability of CCs performance, we show here that field and temperature dependences of Jc at a given angle can be reproduced over wide ranges using a scaling relation based only on three parameters. Furthermore, we present and validate a new approach combining magnetic and transport measurements for the determination of the scaling parameters with minimal experimental effort.

Abstract

Rare-earth-barium-copper-oxide (REBCO) tapes are now available from several industrial manufacturers and are very promising conductors in high field applications. Due to diverging materials and deposition processes, these manufacturers' tapes can be expected to differ in their electro-mechanical and mechanical properties. For magnets designers, these are together with the conductors' in-field critical current performance of the highest importance in choosing a suitable conductor. In this work, the strain and stress dependence of the current carrying capabilities as well as the stress and strain correlation are investigated for commercial coated conductors from Bruker HTS, Fujikura, SuNAM, SuperOx and SuperPower at 77 K, self-field and 4.2 K, 19 T.

5. Tuning Fluorination of Linear Carbonate for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract

Liquid electrolyte engineering plays a critical role in modern lithium-ion batteries. However, the existing electrolytes fall short when used with some trending battery chemistries such as high-voltage and high-energy-density electrodes. Fluorination of electrolyte solvents has been identified as an effective approach for improved cyclability, but few works systematically studied the effects of fluorination extent of carbonate solvents on battery performance. Here we design and synthesize a family of fluorinated ethyl methyl carbonates. Different numbers of F atoms are finely tuned to yield monofluoroethyl methyl carbonate (F1EMC), difluoroethyl methyl carbonate (F2EMC) and trifluoroethyl methyl carbonate (F3EMC). The cycling behavior of several types of lithium-ion pouch cells, including graphite (Gr)/single-crystalline LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2(SC-NMC811), Gr-SiOx/LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2(NMC622), high-voltage Gr/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4(LNMO), Gr/layered Li-rich Mn-based oxide (LLMO) and fast-charging Gr/NMC622, were systematically investigated to understand the impact of fluorination degree. Compared to the commercially available F3EMC, we found that the partially-fluorinated F1EMC and F2EMC in some cases showed improved cycling stability, which we attribute to their locally-polar –CH2F and –CHF2groups and thus fast ion conduction than –CF3. This work suggests that highly or fully fluorinated solvents are not necessarily desirable; instead, fluorination degree needs to be rationally and finely tuned for optimized lithium-ion cell performance.

6. The Fibrinolytic System in the Newborn: Role of Histidine-Rich Glycoprotein

Abstract

The fibrinolytic system controls fibrin deposition and its clearance. The efficacy of this system can be evaluated by plasminogen concentration determinations and by the behavior of factors such as histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) which controls plasminogen activation and α2-antiplasmin which controls plasmin activity. Circulating plasminogen levels are decreased in the neonatal period. We studied factors affecting fibrinolysis in neonates and observed that an important reduction in HRG accompanied the reduced circulating plasminogen levels, with the result that 85% of circulating plasminogen was not bound to HRG and was thus free for binding to fibrin and for activation to plasmin. This condition is consistent with the increased fibrinolytic activity secondary to the ‘clotting activation’ observed in the neonatal period particularly on the 1st day of life.

Abstract

I5HT levels were investigated in 14 children with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). Low levels of I5HT were demonstrated in all the children studied during the early phase of the disease, indicating reversible platelet aggregation and recirculation of degranulated platelets. Three months after the onset of HUS, only 2 children with a pathological picture of cortical necrosis and a mild degree of chronic renal failure had low I5HT levels. On the contrary, normal I5HT levels were present in the other children completely recovered from HUS and with a renal biopsy picture of thrombotic microangiopathy with predominant glomerular involvement. We conclude that normal values of I5HT, after the acute stage of HUS, are a good index of complete recovery from the disease. Further observations are required to assess the prognostic value of low I5HT levels in children with chronic renal failure secondary to HUS.

Abstract

Authors review the epidemiology of deep venous thrombosis and the prothrombotic state in high risk patients; particularly antithrombin III role in blood clotting is considered. A fall in antithrombin III concentration and/or activity can induce hypercoagulability and thrombosis. Moreover authors stress the need to evaluate antithrombin III as anti-Xa activity, to detect high risk patients for deep venous thrombosis.
