Abstract

The effects of ageing at 800 $^\circ$C on the properties of the IRIS alloy (Ti$_{49.9}$Al$_{48}$W$_2$B$_{0.1}$) are studied. The initial microstructure of this alloy densified by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is mainly composed of lamellar colonies which are surrounded by $\gamma$ grains. The evolutions of the alloy strength and creep resistance resulting from this ageing treatment are measured by the related mechanical tests. The microstructural changes are investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies and by X-ray diffraction. The main structural evolutions consist in a shrinkage of the lamellar areas and in a precipitation of $\beta_0$ phase, which is accompanied by a moderate segregation of tungsten and a decrease of the $\alpha_2$ lamellar width. However, these evolutions are relatively limited and the microstructural stability is found to result mainly from the low diffusivity of tungsten. Conversely, a moderate effect of this ageing treatment on mechanical properties, at room and high temperatures, is measured. Such experimental results are interpreted and discussed in terms of the microstructural evolutions and of the deformation mechanisms which are activated at different temperatures under various solicitations.

Abstract

International audience; As a first step to devise a hybrid process for the production of TiC wear coatings on 316L, consisting of magnetron sputtering followed by titanium carburization, interfacial reactivity between stainless steel and titanium has to be finely understood. Systematic comparisons were carried out on diffusion couples of increasing chemical and geometrical complexity (Fe/Ti, 316L/Ti, and 316L/sputtered Ti), highlighting the formation mechanisms of interfacial structures. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy composition profiles revealed that long-range microstructures in titanium are the result of iron diffusion and oxygen impurities interactions. FeTi and Fe2Ti intermetallics formation is first kinetically driven, then favors thermodynamic stability, leading to compositional changes during thermal cycles. Their growth is shown to be non-diffusion controlled. These compounds act as diffusion barriers for chromium, and traps for carbon, indirectly generating a complex layered structure at the interface. Differences between bulk and sputtered titanium are exclusively linked to the latter smaller scale, including destabilized diffusion fronts, and superficial TiO formation by oxygen rejection after iron diffusion.

Abstract

International audience; This work reexamines the insertion of O atoms in the L10 gamma-TiAl system using first-principles calculations and thermodynamic modeling in the independent point defect approximation. It includes a study of intrinsic point defects, the insertion of many alloying elements (more than twenty were considered), as well as a study of their interaction with oxygen. The formation of complex defects composed of either vacancies, anti-sites or solute elements is then studied. Results at the atomic scale show a high segregation of oxygen in titanium-rich environments: oxygen easily segregates onto Ti anti-sites (TiAl) and alloying elements are located in the vicinity of Al sub-lattices. DFT point-defect energetics shows that there is a clear correlation between the nature and site preference of an alloying element, and the oxygen segregation energy in the vicinity of this solute. The thermodynamic model shows that at equilibrium, oxygen does not occupy isolated interstitial sites but prefers to be located in the vicinity of Ti anti-sites or alloying elements. The effect of this strong segregation on oxygen diffusivity is discussed hereinafter. Results show a strong slowdown in oxygen diffusivity due to intrinsic defects. For Ti/Al > 0.5 ratios, the traps for O diffusion are mainly constituted by Ti anti-sites, and the addition of solutes does not contribute much to the trapping of diffusing O atoms. For Ti/Al < 0.5 ratios however, the contribution of solutes to trapping phenomena can be very important, and a decrease by 1–2 orders of magnitude of effective O diffusion coefficients can be observed for temperatures around 800–1100 K.

Abstract

International audience; In order to identify the reasons for the brittleness of a TNM-TiAl alloy (Ti51.05Al43.9Nb4Mo0.95B0.1 in at.%), the plastic deformation behaviour of the ordered beta-0 phase is investigated. The corresponding powder was densified by Spark Plasma Sintering to produce a near lamellar microstructure made of γ/α2 lamellar colonies surrounded by gamma and beta-0 grains. Then, the room temperature tensile behaviour is studied by carrying out tensile tests and additional in-situ straining experiments in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The TNM alloy exhibits a limited ductility, with the fracture surface of test specimens showing cleavage facets along lamellar interfaces. In addition, the beta-0 grains contain nano-precipitates of the omega-0 phase and deform plastically by superdislocations dissociated into two superpartial dislocations separated by an antiphase boundary. These dislocations glide in {011} planes and are observed to be localized into pileups, which is related to the omega-0 strengthening precipitation within the beta-0 grains. This localised hardening behaviour leads to stress concentration in grain boundaries which is assumed to be responsible for delamination along lamellar interfaces in neighbouring lamellar colonies.; Afin d'identifier les raisons de la fragilité d'un alliage TNM-TiAl (Ti51.05Al43.9Nb4Mo0.95B0.1 en at.%), le comportement de déformation plastique de la phase βo ordonnée est étudié. La poudre correspondante a été densifiée par Spark Plasma Sintering pour produire une microstructure quasi lamellaire constituée de colonies lamellaires γ/α2 entourées de grains γ et βo. Ensuite, le comportement en traction à température ambiante est étudié en réalisant des essais de traction et des expériences supplémentaires de déformation in situ dans un microscope électronique à transmission (MET). L'alliage TNM présente une ductilité limitée, le faciès de rupture des éprouvettes présentant des facettes de clivage le long des interfaces lamellaires. En outre, les grains βo contiennent des nanoprécipités de la phase ωo et se déforment plastiquement par des superdislocations dissociées en deux dislocations superpartielles séparées par une limite d'antiphase. Ces dislocations glissent dans les plans {011} et on observe qu'elles sont localisées en empilements, ce qui est lié à la précipitation du renforcement ωo au sein des grains βo. Ce comportement de durcissement localisé conduit à une concentration de contraintes dans les joints de grains qui est supposée être responsable de la délamination le long des interfaces lamellaires dans les colonies lamellaires voisines.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental results on low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour at high temperatures of the IRIS alloy (Ti-Al48-W2-B0.08, at. %) densified by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Cyclic stability is noticed, whatever the temperature and the total strain amplitude. Fracture occurs by mixed interlamellar and translamellar modes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations reveal that deformation is mainly due to ordinary dislocations and twins, and slip and cross-slip mechanisms have been clearly evidenced, without significant contribution of climb at 800°C. It has also been established that dislocation density depends on fatigue life time rather than on stress amplitude.

Abstract

International audience; After a few decades of increasing interest, spark plasma sintering (SPS) has now become a mature powder metallurgy technique, which allows assessing its performances toward fabricating enhanced materials. Here, the case of metals and alloys will be presented. The main advantage of SPS lies in its rapid heating capability enabled by the application of high intensity electric currents to a metallic powder. This presents numerous advantages balanced by some limitations that will be addressed in this review. The first section will be devoted to sintering issues, with an emphasis on the effect of the electric current on the densification mechanisms. Then, typical as-SPS microstructures and properties will be presented. In some cases, they will be compared with that of materials processed by conventional techniques. As such, examples of nanostructured materials, intermetallics, metallic glasses, and high entropy alloys, will be presented. Finally, the implementation of SPS as a technique to manufacture complex, near-net shape industrial parts will be discussed.; Après quelques dizaines d‘années d'intérêt croissant, le frittage-flash ou spark plasma sintering (SPS) a atteint un stade de maturité en tant que technique de métallurgie des poudres, qui permet d'évaluer ses performances au travers de la fabrication de matériaux avancés. Nous présenterons ici le cas des métaux et alliages. Le principal avantage du SPS réside dans sa capacité de chauffage rapide qui est rendue possible par l'application de courants électriques de haute intensité à une poudre métallique. Cela présente de nombreux avantages contrebalancés par certaines limitations qui seront abordées dans cette revue. La première partie sera consacrée à la problématique du frittage, avec un accent particulier sur l'effet du courant électrique sur les mécanismes de densification. Ensuite, nous présenterons un certain nombre de microstructures et propriétés types à l’état brut de SPS. Dans certains cas, une comparaison sera faite avec les matériaux élaborés par des techniques conventionnelles. A ce titre, des exemples de matériaux nanostructurés, d‘intermétalliques, de verres métalliques et d‘alliages à haute entropie seront présentés. Enfin, nous discuterons de la mise en œuvre du SPS en tant que technique de fabrication de pièces industrielles complexes et proches des cotes.

Abstract

International audience; This work is a first-principles study of the insertion and diffusivity of oxygen in the γ-TiAl L10 system. Five interstitial positions were identified as stable. One, however, the 2h site a pyramid composed of a Ti square topped by an Al atom, was found more stable than the others. The oxygen interactions with the TiAl system were thus studied and analyzed in detail using vibrational, elastic and electronic properties. The results show that the O atom prefers to be surrounded by Ti atoms and tries to minimize the number of bonds with aluminum. The diffusion mechanism is subsequently studied at the atomic scale, by analyzing displacements between stable interstitial sites. The oxygen diffusivity is found to be anisotropic and the components in the x and z direction, Dx and Dz, are then calculated and compared with those of O diffusion into other Ti-Al alloys. The analysis of results shows two effects. First, the stability of sites is related to the number of O-Al bonds, the fewer there are, the more stable the site is, and second, the diffusion is faster when the content of interstitial sites composed of many Ti atoms is low.

Abstract

International audience; The microscopic densification mechanisms of metallic systems (TiAl, Ag-Zn) by spark plasma sintering (SPS) have been studied by simulations and experiments. Finite element simulations showed that, despite very high current densities at the necks between metallic powder particles (≈ 5×10 4 A/cm 2), only very limited Joule overheating can be expected at these locations (< 1°C), because of very fast heat diffusion. The microscopic plasticity mechanisms under these high electric currents have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. For this purpose, thin foils have been extracted by focused ion beam at the necks between TiAl powder particles. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that microscopic plasticity mechanisms at the necks between powder particles are investigated by TEM during densification of a metallic powder. Dislocation glide and climb mechanisms were identified, followed by recovery and recrystallization. The elementary mechanism kinetically controlling these phenomena was proposed to be bulk diffusion of Al, which activation energy (360 kJ/mol) is close to the activation energy measured for densification (308 ± 20 kJ/mol). Comparisons of densification kinetics by SPS (≈ 60-110 A/cm 2) and by hot pressing (0 A/cm 2) showed no influence of current on these mechanisms. Finally, reaction experiments in the Ag-Zn system did not show any influence of very high currents (> 1000 A/cm 2) on diffusion kinetics. Consequently, densification by SPS occurs by classical mechanisms not affected by the current.
