Introduction: The sticky platelet syndrome (SPS) seems to be a common cause of thrombosis, although no molecular substrate to explain platelet hyperaggregability has been found., Objective: To analyze an association between the SPS phenotype and the platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIIa PL(A1/A2) (human platelet antigen [HPA]-1a/b) gene polymorphism., Methods: Along an 18-month period, Mexican mestizo thrombophilic patients were prospectively accrued. The SPS phenotype was assessed by aggregometry, whereas a tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to detect the PLA1 and PLA2 alleles., Results: A total of 95 individuals with SPS and 127 healthy donors were studied; in 11 of the donors and 16 of the patients with SPS the A2 allele of the GP IIb/IIIA was found, yielding a weak and nonsignificant association (odds ratio 2.14, 95% CI 0.94-4.85)., Conclusion: In Mexican mestizo patients, the platelet GP IIIa PL(A1/A2) gene polymorphism does not lead to the SPS phenotype.

Background: Childhood overweight and obesity are a notorious health problem around the world that may lead to an increase in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Acanthosis nigricans (AC) and skin tags (ST) are skin markers that can help to obtain an early diagnose of these metabolic disorders., Objective: To determine whether such skinmarkers (ST and AN), correlate with insulin resistance based on the assessment of the homeostasis model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and also with overweight and obesity., Methods: Weight, height and body mass index were obtained and accordingly to CDC based on percentiles, and classification was made as follows: underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obesity. Beside insulin, glucose, and HOMA-IR were assessed., Results: We included 186 patients age range 6-14 yr, 89 female, 97 male, 10 with underweight, 148 healthy weight, 18 overweight, 10 obese; 18 children presented ST and 29 AN. We found a relationship between the presence of ST and AN with higher BMI and insulin resistance., Conclusions: The presence of skin tags and Acanthosis nigricans correlates with the presence of insulin resistance in children even in healthy weight patients and higher BMI.

Noise in the environment is increasing over the years. Disturbances produced by noise are varied, some lead to serious health consequences. Noise level was registered in a teaching hospital. Levels in the wards were between 50 and 59 dB. In the Intensive Care Unit, main hallways and outpatients department levels were higher than 59 dB. Isolated peaks up to 90.0 dB (Pediatrics) were detected. The noise level recommended for a hospital is under 50.0 dB. We found that the principal source of noise came from the medical and nursing staff.
