Abstract

A steady-state energy flow model is proposed for the benthic fine sand community of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc. The main objective is to assess the relative importance of benthic processes associated with the carbon cycle in an eutrophicated bay. Available data include biomass estimates of the major trophic groups and measurements of the most critical fluxes : particulate organic carbon sedimentation, community respiration, microbial production. A balanced annual carbon budget is estimated using an inverse method, particularly appropriate in food web research where the number of unknowns is far higher than the number of independent observations. The method offers the possibility of taking dynamical constraints into account, by introducing global flow measurements, for example, and of reducing the initial uncertainty in the fluxes. The annual carbon budget provided by the model outlines the major features of the flows of the carbon cycle. The potential supply of energy (328 g C m-2 y-1) is significantly higher than the total demand of the benthic consumers. So a large fraction (46%) of the total carbon input is not used by the benthic food web. Then the role of this eutrophicated bay as potential source of carbon for the adjacent sea is discussed.

Abstract

During 1974-1975, a nine month survey of the principal physico-chemical and biological parameters was made to assess the ecological impacts of the construction of the deep water terminal of Antifer (France). The results showed that the greatest damage was observed on benthic organisms (benthos and microphytobenthos), due to dredging operations., Dans le but de mettre en évidence les impacts créés par la construction du terminal pétrolier d'Antifer (France), une étude des principaux paramètres physico-chimiques et biologiques a eu lieu en 1974-1975. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les effets les plus significatifs sont observés au niveau des peuplements benthiques.

Abstract

An oceanographic survey of the bay of Brest (France) was conducted in 1977, together with an hydrological study of the rivers entering the bay. Samples were collected from rivers. Analysis of dissolved nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, ammonium, reactive silicate) and tentative solute budjets (observed and calculated) for nitrogen and phosphorous in drainage basin were performed., Une étude océanographique de la rade de Brest (France) a été effectuée en 1977 en même temps que l'étude hydrologique des cours d'eaux affluents. L'analyse des échantillons prélevés dans les rivières a porté sur les sels nutritifs dissous (nitrate, phosphate, ammonium, silicate). Un double bilan (calculé et observé) des apports annuels en azote et phosphore a ainsi pu être obtenu.
