Here we attempt to outline some significant elements in the novel from the land of Brazilian literature, through the analysis of the novel Vidas Secas (Dry Lives) of the Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos. A general review of the process of formation of Brazilian society, since the arrival of Europeans until our days, is carried out. The novel is analyzed in the light of sociological parameters that feature the Brazilian people, according to the anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, and finally, we foreground those factors that define this work as representative of a popular cultural manifestation that aims at the proletarian who longs for a better future. The study was developed in the light of the methodological framework proposed in 1988 by the "Taller de Investigación Literaria sobre América Latina y el Caribe" (TILALC) (Workshop of Literary Research about Latin America and the Caribbean) in the work Apropiaciones de lo popular en la literatura latinoamericana y caribeña (Appropriations of the popular in Latin American and Caribbean literature). There it is stated that the popular in Latin American literary fiction can be examined by means of the following indicators: orality, mythical thought, present social dynamics, forms and events that express culture, and the presence of an aesthetic ideological project, implicit or otherwise. The thesis of our approach to Graciliano Ramos is to note how the sparing and whispering discourse of characters in this novel become the aesthetic artifices in a context of abandonment and misery of the Latin American peasant.

- Abstract
A highly regiospecific synthesis of a series of indenoindoles is reported, together with X-ray studies and their activity against human prostate cancer cells PC-3 and LNCaP in vitro. The most effective compound 7,7-dimethyl-5-[(3,4-dichlorophenyl)]-(4bRS,9bRS)-dihydroxy-4b,5,6,7,8,9bhexahydro-indeno[1,2-b]indole-9,10-dione 7q reduced the viability in both cell lines in a time and dose-dependent manner. Inhibitory effects were also observed on the adhesion, migration, and invasion of the prostate cancer cells as well as on clonogenic possibly by inhibition of MMP-9 activity. Molecular docking of 7q and 6k into MMP-9 human active site was also performed to determine the probable binding mode., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
This study describes the preliminary toxicity evaluation of five new furan derivatives, 2-[2-acetylamino-2-[(benzothiazolyl-substituted)aminocarbonyl]vinyl]-5-nitro furane (compounds A, B, D and E) and 2-[2-phenylamino-2-[benzothiazolylaminocarbonyl]vinyl]furane (compound C). Cytotoxicity was determined using the MTT (tetrazolium salt) method over BHK21 (Syrian baby hamster kidney) and Hep-2 (human larynx carcinoma) cells, which had previously been used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the 5-nitrofuran derivatives. The lethal concentration 50 (LC(50)) was determined using brine shrimp (Artemia salina) bioassay. Nitrofurantoin was used as reference compound. The results demonstrate that BHK21 cells are more sensitive than Hep-2 cells. This structurally related serial of compounds shows a differential toxicity, which is an indication that the toxicity naturally arising from the nitro group can be modulated by the substituents over the furan ring. Additionally, compound C, the only derivative with no nitro group, was least toxic to Hep-2, but exhibits toxicity to BHK21 cells and brine shrimp. The LC(50 )brine shrimp test (BST) bioassay results were as follows: A, 654.2 microg ml(-1); B, 50.0 microg ml(-1); C, 533.4 microg ml(-1); D, 172.1 microg ml(-1); E, 76.4 microg ml(-1), and NF, >1000 microg ml(-1)., (Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

- Abstract
Introduction: Nasu Hakola disease (NHD) is a progressive dementia that presents accompanied by bone cysts and, at random, epilepsy. It is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease and its genetic defect is located at the 19q13.1 chromosome. The genetic mutation was identified at DAP 12. It appears that DAP 12 is expressed in the microglial activation and the differentiation of macrophages in the central nervous system and, at the same time, in the osteoclasts in charge of bone remodelling. This double character consisting of dementia and bone cysts, which contain triglycerides and thin PAS positive membranes in a bone with cortical erosion and medullary hypoplasia, enables us to differentiate this disease from other frontotemporal neurodegenerative disorders, such as Pick s disease. At the same time this also allows it to be distinguished from multiple sclerosis, metachromatic leukodystrophy, Marchafava Bignami disease, and prion diseases (such as new variant Creutzfeldt Jakob)., Case Reports: In this paper we describe two cases of NHD, also known as polycystic lipomembranous osteodysplasia with sclerosing leukoencephalopathy, in which progressive dementia, bone cysts and epilepsy were identified. Serious brain atrophy was found and confirmed by imaging studies and brain biopsies, which were also used to rule out other degenerative diseases of the frontal lobe, as well as Creutzfeldt Jakob disease., Conclusions: Both cases meet all the necessary criteria to satisfy a diagnosis of NHD. This is a hereditary, little known disease whose genetic alterations (i.e. mutations) are still in need of further study. It mainly affects males, who suffer the onset of dementia in their thirties. The neurological disorders constitute a frontal syndrome, due to predominant prefrontal involvement, and they occur in the dorsolateral area, with disorders affecting the executive and planning functions; in the orbitofrontal area, which is reflected in social maladjustment and clear obsessive compulsive traits; and also in the medial or cingulate area, which manifests itself as apathy and lack of motivation. When dealing with this disease, in addition to symptomatic therapy, genetic counselling is also important.
