Graphene-based photodetectors have shown responsivities up to 10$^8$A/W and photoconductive gains up to 10$^{8}$ electrons per photon. These photodetectors rely on a highly absorbing layer in close proximity of graphene, which induces a shift of the graphene chemical potential upon absorption, hence modifying its channel resistance. However, due to the semi-metallic nature of graphene, the readout requires dark currents of hundreds of $\mu$A up to mA, leading to high power consumption needed for the device operation. Here we propose a novel approach for highly responsive graphene-based photodetectors with orders of magnitude lower dark current levels. A shift of the graphene chemical potential caused by light absorption in a layer of colloidal quantum dots, induces a variation of the current flowing across a metal-insulator-graphene diode structure. Owing to the low density of states of graphene near the neutrality point, the light-induced shift in chemical potential can be relatively large, dramatically changing the amount of current flowing across the insulating barrier, and giving rise to a novel type of gain mechanism. This readout requires dark currents of hundreds of nA up to few $\mu$A, orders of magnitude lower than other graphene-based photodetectors, while keeping responsivities of $\sim$70A/W in the infrared, almost two orders of magnitude higher compared to established germanium on silicon and indium gallium arsenide infrared photodetectors. We study an outcome of a vote in a population of voters exposed to an externally applied bias in favour of one of two potential candidates. The population consists of ordinary individuals, that are in majority and tend to align their opinion with the external bias, and some number of contrarians --- individuals who are always hostile to the bias but are not in a conflict with ordinary voters. The voters interact among themselves, all with all, trying to find an opinion reached by the community as a whole. We demonstrate that for a sufficiently weak external bias, the opinion of ordinary individuals is always decisive and the outcome of the vote is in favour of the preferential candidate. On the contrary, for an excessively strong bias, the contrarians dominate in the population's opinion, producing overall a negative response to the imposed bias. We also show that for sufficiently strong interactions within the community, either of two subgroups can abruptly change an opinion of the other group., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the joint distributions and temporal correlations between the partial maximum $m$ and the global maximum $M$ achieved by a Brownian Bridge on the subinterval $[0,t_1]$ and on the entire interval $[0,t]$, respectively. We determine three probability distribution functions: The joint distribution $P(m,M)$ of both maxima; the distribution $P(m)$ of the partial maximum; and the distribution $\Pi(G)$ of the gap between the maxima, $G = M-m$. We present exact results for the moments of these distributions and quantify the temporal correlations between $m$ and $M$ by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We study the correlations between the maxima $m$ and $M$ of a Brownian motion (BM) on the time intervals $[0,t_1]$ and $[0,t_2]$, with $t_2>t_1$. We determine exact forms of the distribution functions $P(m,M)$ and $P(G = M - m)$, and calculate the moments $\mathbb{E}\{\left(M - m\right)^k\}$ and the cross-moments $\mathbb{E}\{m^l M^k\}$ with arbitrary integers $l$ and $k$. We show that correlations between $m$ and $M$ decay as $\sqrt{t_1/t_2}$ when $t_2/t_1 \to \infty$, revealing strong memory effects in the statistics of the BM maxima. We also compute the Pearson correlation coefficient $\rho(m,M)$, the power spectrum of $M_t$, and we discuss a possibility of extracting the ensemble-averaged diffusion coefficient in single-trajectory experiments using a single realization of the maximum process., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study the statistics of the first passage of a random walker to absorbing subsets of the boundary of compact domains in different spatial dimensions. We describe a novel diagnostic method to quantify the trajectory-to-trajectory fluctuations of the first passage, based on the distribution of the so-called uniformity index $\omega$, measuring the similarity of the first passage times of two independent walkers starting at the same location. We show that the characteristic shape of $P(\omega)$ exhibits a transition from unimodal to bimodal, depending on the starting point of the trajectories. From the study of different geometries in one, two and three dimensions, we conclude that this transition is a generic property of first passage phenomena in bounded domains. Our results show that, in general, the Mean First Passage Time (MFPT) is a meaningful characteristic measure of the first passage behaviour only when the Brownian walkers start sufficiently far from the absorbing boundary. Strikingly, in the opposite case, the first passage statistics exhibit large trajectory-to-trajectory fluctuations and the MFPT is not representative of the actual behaviour., Comment: 23 pages and 6 figures. We study a minimal model of active transport in crowded single-file environments which generalises the emblematic model of single file diffusion to the case when the tracer particle (TP) performs either an autonomous directed motion or is biased by an external force, while all other particles of the environment (bath) perform unbiased diffusions. We derive explicit expressions, valid in the limit of high density of bath particles, of the full distribution $P_n(X)$ of the TP position and of all its cumulants, for arbitrary values of the bias $f$ and for any time $n$. Our analysis reveals striking features, such as the anomalous scaling $\propto\sqrt{n}$ of all cumulants, the equality of cumulants of the same parity characteristic of a Skellam distribution and a convergence to a Gaussian distribution in spite of asymmetric density profiles of bath particles. Altogether, our results provide the full statistics of the TP position, and set the basis for a refined analysis of real trajectories of active particles in crowded single-file environments.

We study particle current in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of super reservoirs thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula

We propose a model of nonequilibrium quantum transport of particles and energy in a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir). The meso-reservoirs are in turn thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We study the distribution function $P(\omega)$ of the random variable $\omega = \tau_1/(\tau_1 + ... + \tau_N)$, where $\tau_k$'s are the partial Wigner delay times for chaotic scattering in a disordered system with $N$ independent, statistically equivalent channels. In this case, $\tau_k$'s are i.i.d. random variables with a distribution $\Psi(\tau)$ characterized by a "fat" power-law intermediate tail $\sim 1/\tau^{1 + \mu}$, truncated by an exponential (or a log-normal) function of $\tau$. For $N = 2$ and N=3, we observe a surprisingly rich behavior of $P(\omega)$ revealing a breakdown of the symmetry between identical independent channels. In this paper we study some aspects of search for an immobile target by a swarm of N non-communicating, randomly moving searchers (numbered by the index k, k = 1, 2,..., N), which all start their random motion simultaneously at the same point in space. For each realization of the search process, we record the unordered set of time moments \{\tau_k\}, where \tau_k is the time of the first passage of the k-th searcher to the location of the target. Clearly, \tau_k's are independent, identically distributed random variables with the same distribution function \Psi(\tau). We evaluate then the distribution P(\omega) of the random variable \omega \sim \tau_1/bar{\tau}, where bar{\tau} = N^{-1} \sum_{k=1}^N \tau_k is the ensemble-averaged realization-dependent first passage time. We show that P(\omega) exhibits quite a non-trivial and sometimes a counterintuitive behaviour. We demonstrate that in some well-studied cases e.g., Brownian motion in finite d-dimensional domains) the \textit{mean} first passage time is not a robust measure of the search efficiency, despite the fact that \Psi(\tau) has moments of arbitrary order. This implies, in particular, that even in this simplest case (not saying about complex systems and/or anomalous diffusion) first passage data extracted from a single particle tracking should be regarded with an appropriate caution because of the significant sample-to-sample fluctuations., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures, to appear in JSTAT

We study heat transport in a chain of harmonic oscillators with random elastic collisions between nearest-neighbours. The equations of motion of the covariance matrix are numerically solved for free and fixed boundary conditions. In the thermodynamic limit, the shape of the temperature profile and the value of the stationary heat flux depend on the choice of boundary conditions. For free boundary conditions, they also depend on the coupling strength with the heat baths. Moreover, we find a strong violation of local equilibrium at the chain edges that determine two boundary layers of size $\sqrt{N}$ (where $N$ is the chain length), that are characterized by a different scaling behaviour from the bulk. Finally, we investigate the relaxation towards the stationary state, finding two long time scales: the first corresponds to the relaxation of the hydrodynamic modes; the second is a manifestation of the finiteness of the system., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Physics A, Mathematical and Theoretical

We study the dynamics of covariances in a chain of harmonic oscillators with conservative noise in contact with two stochastic Langevin heat baths. The noise amounts to random collisions between nearest-neighbour oscillators that exchange their momenta. In a recent paper, [S Lepri et al. J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 42 (2009) 025001], we have studied the stationary state of this system with fixed boundary conditions, finding analytical exact expressions for the temperature profile and the heat current in the thermodynamic (continuum) limit. In this paper we extend the analysis to the evolution of the covariance matrix and to generic boundary conditions. Our main purpose is to construct a hydrodynamic description of the relaxation to the stationary state, starting from the exact equations governing the evolution of the correlation matrix. We identify and adiabatically eliminate the fast variables, arriving at a continuity equation for the temperature profile T(y,t), complemented by an ordinary equation that accounts for the evolution in the bulk. A self-pulsing effect termed quantum echoes has been observed in experiments with an open superconducting and a normal conducting microwave billiard whose geometry provides soft chaos, i.e. a mixed phase space portrait with a large stable island. For such systems a periodic response to an incoming pulse has been predicted. Its period has been associated to the degree of development of a horseshoe describing the topology of the classical dynamics. We extract the dynamics implicit in an algebraic fitted model Hamiltonian for the deuterium chromophore's vibrational motion in the molecule CDBrClF. The original model has 4 degrees of freedom, three positions and one representing interbond couplings. A conserved polyad allows in a semiclassical approach the reduction to 3 degrees of freedom. For most quantum states we can identify the underlying motion that when quantized gives the said state. Most of the classifications, identifications and assignments are done by visual inspection of the already available wave function semiclassically transformed from the number representation to a representation on the reduced dimension toroidal configuration space corresponding to the classical action and angle variables. The concentration of the wave function density to lower dimensional subsets centered on idealized simple lower dimensional organizing structures and the behavior of the phase along such organizing centers already reveals the atomic motion. We study the quantum and classical scattering of Hamiltonian systems whose chaotic saddle is described by binary or ternary horseshoes. We are interested in parameters of the system for which a stable island, associated with the inner fundamental periodic orbit of the system exists and is large, but chaos around this island is well developed. In this situation, in classical systems, decay from the interaction region is algebraic, while in quantum systems it is exponential due to tunneling. In both cases, the most surprising effect is a periodic response to an incoming wave packet. The period of this self-pulsing effect or scattering echoes coincides with the mean period, by which the scattering trajectories rotate around the stable orbit. This period of rotation is directly related to the development stage of the underlying horseshoe. Therefore the predicted echoes will provide experimental access to topological information. We present a detailed study of the first simple mechanical system that shows fully realistic transport behavior while still being exactly solvable at the level of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The system under consideration is a Lorentz gas with fixed freely-rotating circular scatterers interacting with point particles via perfectly rough collisions. Upon imposing a temperature and/or a chemical potential gradient, a stationary state is attained for which local thermal equilibrium holds for low values of the imposed gradients. Transport in this system is normal, in the sense that the transport coefficients which characterize the flow of heat and matter are finite in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, the two flows are non-trivially coupled, satisfying Onsager's reciprocity relations to within numerical accuracy as well as the Green-Kubo relations . We further show numerically that an applied electric field causes the same currents as the corresponding chemical potential gradient in first order of the applied field. Puzzling discrepancies in higher order effects (Joule heating) are also observed. We explore the quantum scattering of systems classically described by binary and other low order Smale horseshoes, in a stage of development where the stable island associated with the inner periodic orbit is large, but chaos around this island is well developed. For short incoming pulses we find periodic echoes modulating an exponential decay over many periods. The period is directly related to the development stage of the horseshoe. We investigate the properties of sparse matrix ensembles with particular regard for the spectral ergodicity hypothesis, which claims the identity of ensemble and spectral averages of spectral correlators. An apparent violation of the spectral ergodicity is observed. This effect is studied with the aid of the normal modes of the random matrix spectrum, which describe fluctuations of the eigenvalues around their average positions. This analysis reveals that spectral ergodicity is not broken, but that different energy scales of the spectra are examined by the two averaging techniques. Normal modes are shown to provide a useful complement to traditional spectral analysis with possible applications to a wide range of physical systems., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures
