Abstract

SMEs in Thailand use simple paper-based logbooks to record operating data of their equipment and processes such as pressure, temperature, and mass flow rate. However, this data collection method does not help the SMEs in identifying the problems in their day-to-day operations. This study presents examples of installing IoT metering devices in 21 SMEs in Thailand. The digital transformation helps to identify 34 potential energy saving measures. It was estimated that potential energy savings of 3,817 toe (tons of oil equivalent) per year, equal to ∼1,035,091 USD per year could be achieved. Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions present a formidable obstacle to sustainable development, particularly within the transportation sector, contributing to nearly a quarter of global emissions. Notably, in Thailand, road transport accounts for over half of the transport sector's energy-related emissions. Driving behavior significantly affects vehicle energy consumption. Differences in acceleration and braking patterns can be indicative of variations in energy consumption levels. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is a type of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), offering automatic speed control, which behaves differently than a human when driving. This enhancement affords greater operational ease to drivers and has the potential to exert a discernible influence on energy consumption paradigms. The current study compares the energy consumption patterns between driving with and without ACC functionality under real-world driving conditions. Three different drivetrains were tested, including a battery electric vehicle (BEV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV). The driving tests were conducted on various rural routes. Vehicle sensor data was collected utilizing an onboard diagnostics-II system. The empirical findings of the current study indicate that the deployment of ACC led to an approximate escalation in energy consumption rates of 0.26% for the HEV, 1.43% for the BEV, and 2.26% for the ICEV. Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are alternatives to traditional combustion engine-powered vehicles. This work focuses on a thermal management system for battery EVs using liquid cooling and a machine learning (ML) model to predict their thermal-related health. Real-world data of EV operation, battery and cooling conditions were collected. Key influencing factors on the thermal-related health of batteries were identified. The ML model's effectiveness was evaluated against experimental test data. Abstract

The extensive consumption of fossil fuels and other energy resources worldwide necessitates the exploration of alternative energy sources. Thermoelectric power generation is one of the most prominent technologies to convert heat energy into electrical energy. Numerous researchers have devoted significant efforts to enhancing the efficiency of thermoelectric technology through the synthesis of nanomaterials using various methodologies. Among these methods, high-pressure synthesis emerges as one of the most efficient techniques for synthesizing thermoelectric materials. In this study, we fabricated skutterudite-type thermoelectric materials of LaxCo4Sb12 by using a high-pressure synthesis method with a high filling rate, where the actual filling fraction can increase up to x = 0.28, exceeding the theoretical filling limit at ambient pressure. As a result, LaxCo4Sb12 shows a significantly lower lattice thermal conductivity value of 1.3 W/mK which is much lower value than for CoSb3. The results clearly demonstrate that the high-pressure synthesis method is a promising tool for enhancing the performance of thermoelectric materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Potential reductions of CO2emissions from the transition to electric vehicles: Thailand’s scenarios towards 2030

Abstract

The climate crisis has become a significant concern for many worldwide sectors. One of the primary causes of global warming comes from carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, in which the transport sector is the major emitter, especially from road vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) have been seen as the best decarbonization choice to respond to the global warming issue by replacing fossil-fueled engines with electrically driven engines, especially electricity from renewable energy sources. Last year, Thailand’s government unveiled a roadmap with a view to achieving EV production of at least 30% of all auto production in the country by 2030 through the 30@30 policy plan. This study describes the potential reductions of CO2emissions and their cost resulting from the transition to EVs in Thailand. The CO2emissions of EVs caused by Thailand’s road vehicle fleet and battery production have been considered, and the forecasting scenarios of the proportion of EVs in 2030 have been studied. In the scenarios, the number of road cars in 2030 was estimated based on the registered vehicle statistics in Thailand. The data on seven-passenger cars powered by gasoline and electricity are used. A potential incentive from the government to encourage the use of EVs is also discussed based on analyzing the cost of carbon.

43. Energy consumptions and CO2emissions of different powertrains under real-world driving with various route characteristics

Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are broadly admired as an encouraging solution to decarbonize and relieve air pollution in metropolitan transportation. However, each powertrain gives different benefits depending on the actual usage context. This study investigates the energy consumption of various EVs compared to a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. The considered EVs include a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), and battery electric vehicle (BEV). Different road characteristics in the biggest city of northern Thailand are tested as driving route modes, i.e., city, rural, and hill modes, to study the energy consumption of the powertrains under real-world driving scenarios. Additionally, the efficiency of the CO2emission reduction of each powertrain, analyzed from the energy consumption, is presented through the Well-to-Wheel (WtW) basis. The results show that the BEV performs well with all route characteristics, while both hybrids are appropriate in different driving scenarios. On average, of all the route modes, the WtW CO2emission of the HEV, PHEV, and BEV is about 65%, 50%, and 35%, respectively, compared to the ICE. The BEV only has WtT CO2emission from its electricity source. Therefore, it can yield low emissions if renewable energy, such as solar or wind energy, is used as its electricity source instead of fossil fuels.

We report the thermoelectric properties of the partially Ce or Nd filled skutterudite compounds CexCo4Sb12 and NdxCo4Sb12 prepared under high pressures and temperatures. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The actual filling ratio x of Ce or Nd was estimated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). SEM-EDX results indicate that the maximum x values of Ce and Nd can be increased to 0.37 and 0.33, respectively. These values have been considered the highest for any CexCo4Sb12 and NdxCo4Sb12 reported thus far. The electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient measurements of the compounds were performed from 5 to 760 K. Furthermore, the Hall coefficient and specific heat of the compounds were also measured below 300 K. The Seebeck and Hall coefficients of both Ce- and Nd-filled samples exhibited the n-type conductor behavior. 46. Thermoelectric properties of partially filled skutterudites RxCo4Sb12 (R = La, Ce, and Nd) synthesized under high pressures

Abstract

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have been utilized for power generation devices by the direct conversion of waste heat into electrical power. The efficiency of TE materials is determined by the dimensionless figure of merit ZT=S2T/ρκ, where S is the Seebeck coefficient, T is the absolute temperature, ρ is the electrical resistivity, and κ is the thermal conductivity. CoSb3-based skutterudite compounds have attracted considerable attention as one of the best candidates of TE materials. Although CoSb3 shows excellent thermoelectric properties, κ is very high. The reduction in κ for a partially filled CoSb3-based skutterudite is one promising method for improving the TE performance. Partially filled skutterudite compounds with high filling ratio are expected for high-performance TE materials. High pressure benefits the entrance of guest ions into the voids of the filled skutterudite structure than ambient pressure. In this study, we have tried to synthesize partially filled skutterudites LaxCo4Sb12, CexCo4Sb12 and NdxCo4Sb12 were prepared by the high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis method. The structure and chemical composition of the samples were studied and the actual La, Ce and Nd filling ratios were estimated. The electrical and thermal transport properties were studied for selected compounds. This results contribute development of next-generation TE materials., 熱電変換材料は，効率的に熱エネルギーを電気エネルギーに直接変換可能な材料であり，熱電発電や熱電冷却に不可欠な電子材料である。熱電変換材料の性能は，性能指数Z＝S2/pk (S：ゼーベック係数，p：電気抵抗率，k：熱伝導率)で評価され，これに絶対温度Tを乗じた無次元性能指数ZT≧1 が実用化の目安となっている。熱伝導率 kは，さらに電子による寄与（kE）と格子による寄与（kL）の和で表される。熱電性能を決定する各パラメータS，p，kEは，いずれもキャリア濃度の関数であり独立に制御することはできない。しかし，格子熱伝導率kLは，結晶構造等で決まり，キャリア濃度に依存しないため，独立に制御可能である。キャリア濃度を最適化した上で，さらにZTを向上させる方法として，kLの低減は重要である。CoSb3は，その特殊な結晶構造・電子構造から，熱電変換材料への応用が期待されている物質であるが，kLが高いことが欠点である。しかし，CoSb3に希土類元素等を部分的に充填することで，kLが大きく低減することが知られており，充填率が高いほどkLの減少率も高くなることが報告されている。本研究では，高温高圧合成法により， 高い充填率の部分充填スクッテルダイト化合物LaxCo4Sb12, CexCo4Sb12, NdxCo4Sb12 の合成を試みた。その結果，純良な試料の合成に成功し，La, Ce，Nd の最大充填率xは，それぞれ 0.28，0.37，0.33となった。 これらの値は，これまでに報告されている常圧下で合成されたLaxCo4Sb12, CexCo4Sb12, NdxCo4Sb12の充填率よりも高い値であった。得られた試料に関して，電気抵抗率，熱伝導率，ゼーベック係数，ホール係数，比熱の測定を行い，熱電特性を評価した。その結果， La, Ce，Ndを充填した試料は，いずれもn型半導体の性質を示した。 また，最大のZT値は，NdxCo4Sb12の700Kにおいて0.48 と高い値を示した。
