Abstract

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) with teeth severely damaged by dental caries and/or periodontal disease are often managed with medication and/or tooth extraction. A common endodontic treatment for severely decayed teeth in a 26-year-old female chimpanzee is reported. The left maxillary central incisor tooth had lost its crown, probably due to trauma that was not recent, and it had a fistula most likely due to chronic apical periodontitis. The diagnosis was confirmed radiographically before treatment. To treat the infected root canal, endodontic treatment used in humans was adapted for a chimpanzee. After the treatment, the tooth was sealed using an adhesive resin composite. At 11-years post-treatment, there were no signs of recurrence of the lesion or of failure of the tooth seal. The results of this case report suggest that common endodontic treatments used in humans are also effective in chimpanzees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: To compare contraction stresses in direct and indirect composite restorations using crack analysis. Materials and Methods: Glass disks with a central cylindrical hole were prepared. Initial cracks were made in the glass using a Vickers indenter at various distances from the edge of the hole. The indentation crack lengths were measured parallel to the tangent of the edge of the hole. Silanized holes were directly or indirectly filled with a resin composite. The composite was either self-curing and light curing or only self-curing. Various thicknesses of composite cement were applied to the indirect restorations. The crack lengths were re-measured 15 and 30 min after they were filled. The contraction stresses were calculated from the crack lengths and fracture toughness of the glass. Elastic moduli of light-cured and self-cured composite samples were measured using a nanoindentation method 15 and 30 min after curing. Results: The stress could not be calculated for the light-cured direct composite and light-cured indirect composite restorations with thicker cement, due to glass failure caused by the contraction stress. Glass failure did not occur in the indirect composite restoration with thinner cement or in the self-cured direct composite restoration. The stress in the glass was lower for greater distances or shorter times. Factors of indentation-hole distance and restorative procedure significantly affected the stress. The measuring time and the type of curing had significant influence on the elastic modulus. Conclusion: Light-cured indirect composite restorations with a cement thickness < 200 μm generated less contraction stress than did light-cured direct composite restorations. Abstract

Objective: Recent studies have demonstrated that acid etching of vital dentin and pulpal tissue does not retard pulpal healing, odontoblastoid cell differentiation, or dentinal bridge formation when the pulp is capped with adhesive resins. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pulpal response in nonexposed and exposed monkey pulps to treatment with the Clearfil Liner Bond 2 and Clearfil AP-X system. Method and materials: Class V and Class I cavities in nonexposed and exposed pulps were observed at 7 or 8, 27, and 97 days. Results: There were no differences in pulpal inflammation between the Clearfil Liner Bond 2/Clearfil AP-X specimens and calcium hydroxide controls in either Class V or Class I cavities at the various time periods. Conclusion: Clearfil Liner Bond 2 and Clearfil AP-X system is not toxic to either nonexposed or exposed pulpal tissues when placed according to manufacturer's directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This historical treatise follows the documented timeline of tooth decay into today's understanding, treatment, and teaching of caries biology. Caries has been attributed to many different causes for several millennia, however, only since the late 1900s has research revealed its complex multifactorial nature. European writers of the 1600s to 1700s held views that general health, mechanical injuries, trauma, and sudden temperature changes all caused caries—holding a common belief that decay was due to chemical agents, faulty saliva, and food particles. Until the early 1800s most writers believed that caries was due to inflammation from surrounding diseased alveolar bone. Today's science has demonstrated that caries is caused by indigenous oral microorganisms becoming a dynamic biofilm, that in the presence of fermentable sugars produce organic acids capable of dissolving inorganic enamel and dentin followed by the proteolytic destruction of collagen leaving soft infected dentin. As bacteria enter the pulp, infection follows.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Streptococcus troglodytae TKU31 was isolated from the oral cavity of a chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes) and was found to be the most closely related species of the mutans group streptococci to Streptococcus mutans. The complete sequence of TKU31 genome consists of a single circular chromosome that is 2,097,874 base pairs long and has a G + C content of 37.18%. It possesses 2082 coding sequences (CDSs), 65 tRNAs and five rRNA operons (15 rRNAs). Two clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, six insertion sequences and two predicted prophage elements were identified. The genome of TKU31 harbors some putative virulence associated genes, including gtfB, gtfC and gtfD genes encoding glucosyltransferase and gbpA, gbpB, gbpC and gbpD genes encoding glucan-binding cell wall-anchored protein. The deduced amino acid identity of the rhamnose-glucose polysaccharide F gene ( rgpF), which is one of the serotype determinants, is 91% identical with that of S. mutans LJ23 (serotype k) strain. However, two other virulence-associated genes cnm and cbm, which encode the collagen-binding proteins, were not found in the TKU31 genome. Abstract

Objectives: In 2002, FDI (World Dental Federation) published a policy advocating that caries be treated by minimal intervention (MI). This MI policy has been accepted worldwide and is taught in universities. But acceptance in general dental practice has been slower, especially in Japan where healthcare payment and practice favour drilling and filling. To help disseminate this MI policy into general practice, the Japanese Society of Conservative Dentistry developed an evidence-based clinical guideline for restoring carious permanent teeth in adult patients. Methods: The guideline was developed by a committee of nine university clinicians and a librarian. The committee selected the most frequent clinical questions in treating caries and used electronic databases to search and assess the best scientific evidence for each. Members then added their clinical experience and discussed to reach consensus on each question on treating caries with MI policy. Graded recommendations and guidance were made for each clinical question. The provisional guideline was strengthened after review and discussion with university researchers and general practitioners. Results: The guideline addresses the 16 most frequent clinical questions in treating adult caries, including restorative methods and how to tackle root caries. Recommendations for treatment using MI policy were developed using the best scientific evidence and consensus of experienced clinicians.
